Wednesday, 29 October 08, 03:10 PM · Comments (8)

Eto'o, Messi, Xavi and Iniesta

Fifa today announced their list of 23 finalists for this year's World Player Of The Year award and Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Leo Messi and Samuel Eto'o have all been named in the list. There is also a place for ex-blaugrana Deco. The list is pretty similar to that of France Football's Ballon d'Or but at least Fifa have recognised the merits of Iniesta. The winner will be announced on January 12th and the full list of finalists is as follows:

Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal, Togo)
Sergio Agüero (Atletico Madrid, Argentina)
Andrei Arshavin (Zenit, Russia)
Michael Ballack (Chelsea, Germany)
Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus, Italy)
Iker Casillas (Real Madrid, Spain)
Deco (Chelsea/FC Barcelona, Portugal)
Didier Drogba (Chelsea, Ivory Coast)
Samuel Eto'o (FC Barcelona, Cameroon)
Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal, Spain)
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool, England)
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter, Sweden)
Andrés Iniesta (FC Barcelona, Spain)
Kaka (AC Milan, Brazil)
Frank Lampard (Chelsea, England)
Leo Messi (FC Barcelona, Argentina)
Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich, France)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, Portugal)
John Terry (Chelsea, England)
Fernando Torres (Liverpool, Spain)
Ruud van Nistelrooy (Real Madrid, Holland)
David Villa (Valencia, Spain)
Xavi (FC Barcelona, Spain).

striking list of footballers. nice to finally see some international recognition of Don Andrés.
can someone please explain me the difference between THIS award and the one, that C. Ronaldo was just given?? is one of them more "official" than the other, and witch one is the biggest honour?

no doubt C. Ronaldo will take away this one as well, as we're talking about the "year" 07/08. if we said the world's best at the moment....?
i would say a little guy dressed in blue and purple.

bleh, if club AND international performances are concerned my top three finalists would be:

xavi ( scored quite a few goals to save barca's blushes, consistent performer, euro mvp and lead spain to euro glory)

Casillas ( Remove this fellow and Madrid wouldnt have won the title. Also instrumental in leading spain to euro glory)

Michael Ballack ( champs league and euro finalist. Also not too far away from winning the league title with chelsea)

but then again thats only a pipe dream especially considering the fact that a goalie is in the top three so in reality I would have to say

Cronaldo
Torres
Messi

Also I dont really believe Cronaldo deserves to win this title because there are other players who have done more for their team both on the club level AND internationally.

Cronaldo had an amazing season scoring a lot of goals and displaying great performances against low tier teams when playing for Man United..........but he didnt do much for Portugal. In fact he wasnt even the best player on the portuguese team during the euro. That accolade goes to Pepe, then Deco.

I mean its FIFA world player of the year and fifa governs international competitions as well so this award should also consider what you did for your motherland not just what you did for money.

Then again Kaka won it last year for scoring a lot of goals in the champions league

I just want xavi to win this cause he really deserves it.............and also that will further increase barca's tally as the club with the most world player of the year awards........thats right homies, you know barcelona dominates when...

I agree Nasser10 it seems a new generation are coming through and the old guns, most notably Ronaldinho and Thierry Henry, are not even in the so called top 50. Others such as Pirlo usually on the list but dont even make it. On reflection of the season of last year, Ronaldo deserves to win it. Xavi had a great Euro 2008 no doubt but over the domestic season he didnt play as well as he is now/for Spain so he doesnt deserve it. Closest to him was Messi who didnt have a chance to show off at the Euro's for obvious reasons and in my opinion is still below Ronaldo in a few departments on a full-size football pitch. I suppose he a better player in terms of natural ability but Ronaldo was more "effective" in football matches which means he would get my vote as much I hate the diving ****.

its not so much that cronaldo is really great, its just that the defending in epl is not as intelligent as the kind in serie a and la liga
