Goals Goals Goals

Barça's three main goalscorers: Leo Messi, Samuel Eto'o and Thierry Henry

The two goals from Bojan Krkic in Sunday's 0-2 victory at Almeria took Barça's total of league goals this season to 78 from 27 games, which is two goals more than we managed in the 38 matches of the 2007/08 league season, and we still have eleven fixtures remaining! Added to the league goals we have scored 28 in 10 Champions League games and 13 more in eight matches in this season's Copa del Rey. Just to put this into context, that is a total of 119 goals in 45 matches (2.64 goals a game); in 2005/06 when we won La Liga and the Champions League we scored a total of 117 goals in 55 matches (2.13 goals a game), scoring 80 in the league, 24 in the Champions League and 13 in the Copa.

Our three main strikers Leo Messi, Samuel Eto'o and Thierry Henry have between them scored an incredible 76 goals. Of course we cannot forget that they would not have found the net so frequently without the fantastic support from the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and Dani Alves. Messi, who could just be on his way to a Ballon d'Or, has a total so far of 29, having scored 18 in the league, 6 in the Champions League and 5 more in the Copa del Rey. Eto'o is also very close to a goal a game this season with 27 goals (23 in La Liga and 4 in europe) while Thierry Henry has 14 league goals, 5 in the Champions League and one in the Copa making a total of 20.

In the history of La Liga the 100-goals barrier has only ever been broken twice. In 1989/90 Real Madrid reached a total of 107 goals in 38 matches, while Barça managed 102 goals in 42 games in the 1996/97 season with Bobby Robson as coach and Ronaldo scoring 34 times. Unfortunately those goals counted for very little as we only managed to finish second that year.

So with eleven games to go Barça need to score 22 to arrive to 100 goals, if we can manage 25 we will beat our own record of 102, and to smash Madrid's all-time record we require another 30. Do you think our boys can do it?

If our boys keep this recent rythm in scoring, we will be able to beat only our own record. We may beat Madridistas recodr in case all strikers bounce back and get on their own scoring path as we all hope .

Anyway, aal wot matter is LA Liga ;)

I think Etoo's top strikers rank is in danger since he hasn't managed to score for 5 games or even more.

Barça must have hit the post or bar at least 20 times. Think about it !!

We need an average of almost 3 goals a game for the next 11 games to break Madrid's record. It's going to be difficult considering that we have yet to play Sevilla, Getafe, Villareal, Valencia, and Real Madrid. We've scored many goals against these teams earlier in the season but everything's harder the second time around.

But hey, all that matters is the silverware. It would be awesome if we break the record, but we should not focus on it.

Actually FCB Holland we have now hit the post an astounding 32 times so far this season. It is quite a ridiculous stat and proves that with all the goals we have scored we are still not the luckiest of teams because the lucky teams see at least half of those go in.

Lets hope we get a bit of luck in the coming months....

Frede - Stats for goals conceded.

..............05/06................08/09.........
........Games/Goals/Average....Games/Goals/Average

Liga........38/35/0.921...........27/24/0.889....
C.League....13/5/0.385............10/12/1.200.....
C.del Rey....4/6/1.500.............8/5/0.625.....

Overall......55/46/0.836...........45/41/0.911..

Basically this season our defence has been better in La Liga and the Copa del Rey, but Rijkaard's team had a much better defensive record in Europe which gives them slightly the better overall average.

I should add that in the 2005/2006 season we became league champions after 35 games, at this point we had only conceded 29 goals (average of 0.829). This average was spoilt as we conceded 6 goals in the last three league games when we had nothing to play for and we were preparing for the Champions League Final with Arsenal.

These stats are simply amazing, If the team had been a bit more luck we could have scored many more, damn the posts!

Our forward line is definately the best in the world!

It would be nice to beat the RM record but Silverware is what's important, but beating the record would be the icing on the cake.

I believe that the team can do it, they just need luck and to be more clinical...

I must say that i never EVER care about statistics. They're nothing if in a certain game you've got something out of control such as a referee (guess who is going to be the ref of our next match..). Anyway, seeing the numbers, they're quite impressive. That's why i cannot understand why now that everything is going well, press keep saying stuff about possible new additions to our squad. Villa, Ibrahimovic..please.. those guys are no where near our current forwards!! I don't see the point of being obssesed with helping those players to get a better contract from their clubs.. that's the only thing they get with this. They should pay a royalty to Barça because of this.

@Maria Ines,

I agree 100% with you on the talk about Villa, Ibra, Ribery: WE DO NOT NEED ANY OF THIS. I think that the Real Madrid press (Marca and AS) are behind this one. They are truly trying to destabilize our current team and position in the league. Remember, now they have nothing to play for but the league. I just hope that our guys stay focused on the task (s) at hand.Stats mean nothing if you the lose the important games. We must win the Copa, win the league and win our next CL draw!!!

fcb_gow --- because when ronaldo does it, its a surprise for everyone, nobody expected that from him, but everybody expects this from messi, if he stays healthy, he can do this every year, its hard to believe hes only 21.

fcb_gow -
AGREE! Ronaldo was a flash in th epan. A single-purpose player that has had his year in the sun. Messi does it all, and will continue to be a truly valuable player. He IS the Footballer of the Year and will be chased by every team.

I'm an Arsenal fan first, but Barca a close second. We would love to have Messi but will never have the chance. Meanwhile, I will wait for the chance to see another great player wearing the Arsenal kit...Ribery. He is a workhorse that can make any team a contender.

messi is the best player in the world by far in my opinion. cristiano ronaldo scored 42 goals last year but he takes penalties, free kicks and scores headers frequently for man utd whethers messi doesnt always take penalties or free kicks for barcelona and i've never seen him score a header so look at the difference between the players. does anyone agree with me? :P
