How Soon Is Imminent?

Tuesday 3rd June by fcbnews_nic · 13 Comments

I've had to look at a few dictionary definitions this evening: first to check what they say for "imminent" which I always understood to mean very soon, about to happen, or before you can say Jack Robinson. Then after finding the cute photo above I found myself wondering whether "ownage" is really a word or not - surely it should be "ownership". Whatever the case the point is that I am getting pretty bored of the press stories about imminent signings.

Giovani's move to Tottenham has been "imminent" for at least three days now, and I find myself constantly checking back and forth between all the different news sources so I can get the story out as quickly as possible when it finally happens. From what I know of Giovani's agent, Pini Zahavi, he is probably asking for a pay rise before they have actually signed the papers. I have to say I think it is a great shame he is leaving, he has tremendous talent and with a bit more patience he could have been a first team regular in a year or two. The fact that the agent was always asking for more put Barça in a difficult position, I am quite in favour of the club knowing when to say no to a player's demands. One of the problems with Joan Gaspart as a president was that he overpaid players too much in an effort to keep the fans happy. However, having said that, I can't believe he is going so cheaply, they are talking about €8 million with a few extras for games played, etc. Ok he is not Messi and he is not as promising as Bojan, but €8 million is a joke price for such a talented youngster.

The next "imminent" move in the transfer market is the supposed signing of Martin Caceres. Now I have a good feeling about this one, more from what people are saying about him than from seeing him in action. However, if you read the stories closely you will see that Barça are reportedly willing to pay €15 million while Villarreal say that he will only leave if someone pays his release clause of €20 million. Seems to me that they are still a few days negotiating away from an agreement.

As for Dani Alves I have a feeling that this will go on all summer. Sevilla's president, Jose Maria Del Nido, is a stubborn so-and-so, he has seen Barça offload Zambrotta and knows that Barça need to sign a right back, and he also knows Laporta is under pressure with this bloody vote of no-confidence thing. Either Laporta cracks and pays the asking price, which could be around €35 million, or we will be in for a long summer of the Dani Alves soap opera. Expect to see Barça linked soon to another right back alternative as Barça attempt to fool Del Nido into thinking Barça aren't so interested after all.

Hleb might be a different story and is my bet on being Barça's next signing (*waits for egg to hit face*). Arsenal know he wants to leave and I don't believe Wenger likes to keep hold of unhappy players. There may be some negotiation as Arsenal try their luck to get Toure Yaya included in the operation and Barça keep the door open for Adebayor. Reports suggest that Adebayor is the most likely striker of all those mentioned recently. Ibrahimovic has signed a new contract at Inter while Benzema was always going to be extremely difficult. It also seems that Tottenham want €4o million for Berbatov which may well put Barça off.

So, for all the talk of Barça wanting to sign players soon, I expect the two biggest signings - Alves and a striker - to be somewhat slower than imminent. And knowing my luck Giovani has signed for Spurs while I was writing this article.

I heard that Giovanni's younger brother is still in our youth team. I've heard good things of him (some say he's even better than Gio), will the departure of Giovani makes him think of moving as well?

Johnathan dos Santos is with the "Juvenil A" team which is basically one team below Barça B. I've not seen him play but apparently he is an attacking midfielder and he has represented Mexico at under-20 level. I have no idea if his brother's move will affect whether he stays at Barça or not.

From what I understand, Jonathan is a much more well-adjusted lad than Gio is, with greater degrees of maturity and loyalty. He has captained the Mexico U-squads at various levels. I think there is a good chance that he will remain. What does he have to gain from going to another youth set-up? Cesc is an exception in many respects. Pique struggled to break through at another marquee club, and Merida lined the bench on loan this past year. The odds of breaking through at other clubs are not substantially higher than the odds of making the step up at Barca.

Regarding the bid prices for Gio, I too am somewhat disappointed about the rumored sizes of the bids. If the numbers are true, I think it reflects the fact that despite widespread interest in Gio's potential and talent, his wage demands threaten the wage structures of many clubs, which is why there are so few bidders. Man City has offered him 44,000 pounds/week. I am a proponent of paying a premium for upside, but Gio's performances on the pitch this past season do not merit that kind of salary. The sparsity of concrete demand in the form of formal offers means that Tottenham can get away with a low-ball bid of 8 mil.

it is absolutely stupid of Barca to sell Giovani and 8 million euros is a joke. I'm very sad to see him go but I guess from the player's perspective it would be good to get more first team experience and who know he could really steal the show in England. After all their aren't many players in that league who has his kind of skill.

You know what makes me stick to this blog, its your style of writing Nic, there really are no words enough to describe how good your blog is.
Neways, sticking to the matter at hand, Gio should not leave, no ways. If he absolutely wants to leave, let him go, otherwise, Barcelona need all the talent they can muster. If Toure leaves, it will be a disaster, absolute disaster, but somehow, I feel that the reason Keita arrived is a back up for Toure and Pep has someone else in mind, otherwise, Hleb would have no place in the squad. The entire Zambrotta sale was stupid, it puts the ball in that Seville President's court, "show me the money" or no Alves. If my man Laporta fails to bring out the cash, he is headed for United (who seem to have endless cash all of a sudden, even Madrid looks little in front of them)! Barcelona need a play maker by either the name of Diego or Kaka. Most important, all the other spots are either already full or can be filled in. I read quiet a few times that Schuster wants Diego at Madrid, though that clown Calderon keeps dreaming about Ronaldo and Kaka, Barca should try for a move on Kaka. I know its easy for us to say, but since Milan are not trying for the Champions League, he should be available for talks. Caceres seems to be on the way, so thats good, considering he is young, tall and good in the air. So, the defense should be well placed now.

I agree with many of you regarding Gio, 8 Million is a joke. Gio, albeit his inconsistencies this season, is worth much more - he is one of the worlds up and coming talent. Barca should've have loaned him to get regular first team experience..

We need ALVES!! Barca should just pay, next thing you know he ends up else where. Alves, Milito, Puyol, Abidal... hmmm

I believe Giovani is as good as Bojan. He may not have been as successful as Bojan this season, for christ sake it's his first season. I don't believe that he want to leave the club. He made the choice last season. Some section of fans seems like already wrote him off. He have said time and again he want to stay in the club. But no one from the club management has said anything assuring about him. So rather than being treated this way it would be better for him to move under Ramos. 8 million euros is too low for him, trust me we are going to buy him back in two years for 25+ million. Like ManU made money out of Pique, Giovani will be a great business for Totenham.

And more over youngsters who move from youth system would be rightly worried, as they know if they have a poor first season you may not even survive in this club.

As far as Alves is concerned, we would be going all out for him. We have no other choice.

Hello Gio, what happened to loyalty?
Barca has given him everything and now he's losing his patience. IF he moved to England I somehow hope he will fail big time. He has so much potential, but such a young player should have i bit more patience in starting for our first team.
Okay, Messi has stolen his spot, but with his summer program he will (sadly) be injured for 40% of next seasons games. I think Gio should think twice in this case...

Btw, nice to see a LOTCAT in here, Nic!

well lets resign ourselves that gio pretty much gone. which makes me sad considering how excited i was about him last yr this time. but i think he has a bad attitude and thinks much of himself.

what i want to ask is, arent a lot of your people here really worried about the direction and summer signings we are making?? i REALL am. stories like us being strongly linked to acquiring sergio garcia:
"Future Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola explicitly asked Barcelona president Joan Laporta for the Zaragoza striker and Barcelona youth product as he wants to give the squad more caracter and an own identity."- firstly this is just stupid. we have enough locals and dont need to just buy a player cause he was with us before. this guy sucks. he has some talent but is totally unproductive and his abilities are SOOOOOOOOOO limited.

And then maybe letting yaya go! guardiola is making me nervous. he needs to come out and tell the fans we arent going to be letting such crucial players leave.

plus we are likely to get Hleb as our big summer signing. AAHHHHH. He doesnt even match up to the likes of Diego, Van der Vaart. if Madrid get CR as seems likely at hte moment, but not sure, then wow, we are in for some trouble next yr.

plus we need to stop being so tight with money. if we lose our on Alves to Chelsea or so due to money, ill go mental, especially if we replace him with some average player. madrid paid huge cash for Ramos when he was 17 and that investment has been golden. we can always make money again. similarly, if he lost gio cause of a few 1000 per week, that really angers me.

basically when i read the transfer news the few times a day i do, im honestly worried when im waiting for the page to open. i can just see us signign more average playres and letting go of talent. hopefully ive just been sucked into the transfer gossip spiral and things will be fine. but at the moment the club isnt doing much to put the fans at ease.

Frede:

There is no problem with Gio's loyalty. His problem is that Guardiola is giving too much indication that he does not see Gio as vital in his plans. Why should a player stay at a club when it is absolutely certain that he would not be respected here? We all are Barcelona fans, but that does not mean that we should justify the way the club treats some players. If Bojan was in these kind of rumours the club would have rushed to make a statement to assure him. In Gio's case nothing is happening. All indication is that the club is looking to make as much as money from him. So why should he wait here and spoil his career rather than move to some place where he will be respected and more importantly given time to understand the game.
