Malaga 1 Barça 4

Saturday, 01 November 08, 04:11 PM · Comments (38)

Leo Messi scores Barça's second

The pouring rain and waterlogged pitch could not stop Barça winning their eleventh consecutive win in Malaga tonight. Two goals from Xavi Hernandez, one from Leo Messi and an own goal from Malaga defender Welligton send Barça to the top of the table for the time being with Valencia playing Racing Santander as I write. The game was conditioned by the conditions and Barça abondoned the usual patient possession game, even Victor Valdés kicked long instead of his normal throw out to a full back. Games like this often depend to a certain extent on luck but Barça were worthy winners especially after an excellent second half.

Captain Carles Puyol was chosen to fill in for Eric Abidal at left back with Gerard Piqué coming in to partner Rafa Marquez in the centre of defence, while Andres Iniesta returned to the wide left attacking position with Busquets in midfield, leaving Thierry Henry on the bench. Barça got off to great start when Messi broke away in the fourth minute and was pulled back winning a free kick 25 yards out. Xavi stepped up and curled a beautiful free kick past Arnau into the top corner of the goal. However, the lead didn't last long: Dani Alves lost possession and when a long ball came in Piqué failed to intercept giving Adrian a great chance, Valdés saved brilliantly but the ball came out to Duda who side stepped Piqué before smashing the ball past Valdés. Barça came back quickly and in the 19th minute a shot from Messi was blocked but then the clearance went straight back to Messi who drove home a low shot into the far corner from a tight angle on the right.

There's not much more to add from the first half as Barça failed to create another chance, Duda had one more effort for Malaga but his awkward bouncing shot was dealt with comfortably by Valdés. early in the second half Thierry Henry came on in place of Iniesta and within a couple of minutes of coming on he headed down Samuel Eto'o cross from the left and Xavi timing his run perfectly volleyed past Arnau for Barça's third. Barça looked more comfortable now but there were still very few chances. Then in the 67th minute Dani Alves had a long range free kick deflected against the outside of the post. In the 77th minute Busquets had an effort saved, and then in the 81st minute Alves tried again with another free kick from 30 yards out and this time his shot took a wicked deflection off Welligton's outstretched leg and flew into the net giving Arnau no chance. Near the end Puyol had a fine run but his shot went well over, it was a shame because he deserved a goal after an excellent performance at left back.

Top level games should not really be played in such conditions, the ball got stuck in the water throughout the game and meant that both teams relied a lot on hopeful hoofs forward. However, despite an even first half Barça's superiority was quite clear in the second 45 minutes. This was an impressive victory against an in-form team, and it is another good sign that Barça have the right character this season. Once again the home-grown players (seven started today with two coming on as subs) were key to the victory: Valdés dealt well with everything that came his way, Piqué had a strong game that was only spoilt by a mistake in the Malaga goal, Puyol gave another great fighting captain's performance, while Messi and Xavi twice scored the vital goals. Pep Guardiola is trying hard to keep the players from getting over confident, and so far he is doing a great job, but speaking as a fan I have to say I am delighted with the team's attitude and am extremely confident that La Liga is going to return to Camp Nou at the end of the season.

Barça: Valdés 7.5, Alves 6, Marquez 6.5, Piqué 6.5, Puyol 8.5; Xavi 7.5, Toure 7, Busquets 6; Messi 7 (Victor Sanchez m78, 6), Eto'o 6.5 (Bojan m84, 6), Iniesta 6 (Henry m49, 6.5)

Goals: m5 Xavi 0-1, m13 Duda 1-1, m19 Messi 1-2, m52 Xavi 1-3, m81 Welligton o.g 1-4

Barça yellows: m55 Alves, m74 Toure, m79 Busquets.

i pledge my total support and trust in guardiola's barcelona. i basically felt like that in the first 15 min against almeria. now i reckon its time to totally back him.

everything is looking just perfect. the teams spirit is amazing, they are incredibly hungry, determined, u could not ask for more. the stars seem as if they are even shinning a little brighter. xavi looked just sensational AGAIN despite the useless pitch (which should have in fact have been a reason to cancel the game). pique looked so good again and for my money, he and puyol look the best two in the middle right now. but how amazing was puyol, even in an unfamilar left back. alves is proving he is a dirty player, but whatever, he has crazy heart. etoo ran his himself into the ground, love that boy. and valdes was super solid, his save just before the first goal was excellent.

im a total believer in guardiola. when i first saw him on the bench it felt right, but i did begin to become impatient a while back, but no longer. he looks like he has settled into a 11 he likes more, the one that started tonight looks to be a candidate for main starters (with abidal coming in and puyol switching for someone in the middle). and 11 wins on the trot, with TONS of goals, creating a club record is undeniable proof he delivering. im so delighted and excited to watch games now, just loving it. i hope the wins just keep coming and coming and we take on that "everest" schedule in the best possible form.

you gotta feel good about this season paying dividends. im finding it difficult not to get overexcited.

a side note though would have to be the return of gabi milito when it happens. i dont see where he fits into this team that is just jam packed with center backs and then we have henrique on loan. if i have to question guardiola on something, it would have to be how he figures all these players will eventually fit into the plan.

truly another great game we witnessed tonight. i wouldn't be worth my - or yours - time to write all the same praises, that Nic and blaugranaboy has come up with - but let's just say i agree.

just a couple of noticeable observations:
- why isn't Etoo producing more at away games? dont get me wrong, he works his ass of, but did he have one shot at goal tonight?
- it looks like Pep is really starting to show some recognition of Toure's magnificent work rate. hurray for that!

We were last top of the league 515 days ago. Just before I started writing this blog, we then drew at home to Betis (anyone remember that nightmare) and Madrid went on to win the league.

The conditions were absolutely horrid. However our man of the match xavi didnt really seem to be affected that much by the waterlogged pitch.........well in comparison to messi and iniesta who were having a miserable time.

Wow, puyol is my idol! An absolutely dominant performance. He pretty much shut down the left wing. Not that it is surprising to see el capitan snuffing out attacks and dealing with aerial threats with such ease. Whats shocking is this fellow started his career on the right then moved to the center and today he just dominated on the left. Damn he is too good!

Agreed. This rotation policy is working for the time being. Players are fresher, hungrier and more determined to fight for the team as a result. Today Henry came on and within 2 mins he has an assist to his name. That is typical of the effectivness of the current system. Pep uses the players strengths the best he can and changes the personnel depending on the opposition Barca face.

Another terrific gritty, work-hard performance with little to fault apart. Avles could of been better, Puyol was excellent, Toure cleared up well, Eto worked hard, Messi scored a good goal and Xavi was very good. The only other minor thing I noticed which caught my eye was Messi when he came off he looked a little rattled to me but maybe I misread him. He has to accept aswell that 4-1 up in dreadful conditions Pep will take him off to reduce risk of injury/fatigue as I was genuinely worried that someone would have been stretchered off today as football should never be played in those conditions.

Lets hope for another stellar performance with Basle with many of the weekends starters rested for the next few very hard weeks.

Viva Barca...

what a game!!! when i started watchin it, I felt like if we'd drop some points, but I m glad i was proven wrong....The new Barca is just incredible.....As far as the performances are concerned, everyone played fantastic....I can't fault anyone today cuz it won't be right on my part to fault them under those treacherous conditions on the pitch....Everyone played their hearts out and showed some serious balls which was missin last season....anyways...another win...and we sit at the top of the table for the weekend....i could not be any happier....

Viva Barca once again..

Guardiola= genius.
An unbelievable performance Xavi and what can you say about captain Carles. He is always there whenever any team attacks and has his fare share of attacking.
Pique needs to be more physical. He has fantastic skill but needs more grunt and power shown by Puyol.
Overall a magnificent performance by the blaugrana in disgusting conditions and lets hope that Madrid drop points to.

Messi had to be given an early rest. I hope Guardiola uses him against Basel instead of giving him a rest (very likely) so we can be entertained even more.

His goal today was money! I felt Barca lost a chance to take the lead when he slipped because of the dreadful pitch conditions but he recovered and rifled a powerful shot making sure it hovered just a bit over the ground.

Best player in the world hands down.

Lets keep our feet on the ground as there is a long way to go...

I have to admit I was not convinced bythe appointment of Pep.. I felt he should have been a N0 2.. But am very impressed with the mentality and leadership Pep has brought to the team. Last night he got the team to stop playing the ball on the floor and play the ball longer... as the conditions were not right for the tight passing game we play.. Second half we controled the game completely.. Well done Pep keep it up..

The big test will come at the end of November to Christmas when we play Sevilla, Valencia, Mardid and Villareal... if we do well in these games then we can be hopeful for the season..

So far so good... a vast improvement on the last two seasons..

The team performed extremely well and showed the grit and determination, needed to be champions despite the terrible condition. The playing surface was truley horrendous. But Barca managed a great win. Barca even had to play a totally different ball game and came out tops.

Puyol is a BEAST, he is a truley great defender and his performance was world class. Xavi was Superb his goals were great. Valdes was solid, he even came off his line which he normally doesn't do...

Pep has instilled a great mentality and humility in the squad and it shows on the pitch. the players are confident and are united.

We are TOPS!!!! :D

Glorious win! Although the conditions were far from stellar, FC Barcelona has proved that they are more than a force to be reckoned with.. I have no doubt that we will be able to get atleast 10 if not 12 points from the 4 big games coming up.. Puyol was imperious last night and looks comfortable where ever he plays. Pique had a good game but for me he still needs the grit and dominance on the ball that great defenders (read: Puyol) have. I mean he's a fantastic defender and does not make many mistakes but when he does, we tend to concede, like yesterday and also against Espanyol, i.e he makes crucial errors which need to be cut down.

Take nothing away from anyway though, fabulous performance last night, the stuff CHAMPIONS are made of!!

FORCA BARCA!!!

Barça vs. Racing: 1-1**** ( Valencia vs. Racing: 2-4)
Barça vs. Atletico M: 6-1 ***(Villarreal vs. Atletico M:4-4)
Barça vs. Almeria: 4-1***( R.Madrid vs. Almeria: 1-1)
This may not mean much but Barça fared better than other top clubs against common opposition. However, let's hope this superiority translates into good head to head results against Valencia, Villarreal and Madrid!!

We will not ALWAYS win and please do not hop off at the first sign of trouble. WE tend to be very fickle...I hope I am not bursting your bubble!!!

@Blaugrana-Namibia

Sylvinho does not suck!!! what YOU do not know (and many on the forum) is that Puyol was a right back LOooooooNNNNG before he ever became a central defender. This is his natural position and I am surprised to see some express surprise when they see him play at right back. I think he is a better right back than a central defender any day of the week!!!

uhh well everyone knew puyol started off his career as a right back. He even won an award for it too at some point. Its common knowledge.

Later in his career he moved to the center, which is common for quite a few wingbacks in this sport (another example would be our old chap Lillian Thuram).

Regardless, it doesnt matter where our favourite captain plays because he dominates anywhere. Its not often you see a naturalised right back put up a awesome performance on the opposite side of the pitch and Puyol exuded absolute class on the left wing......you cant help but marvel.

The Captain is too versatile

We definitely have to conduct ourselves in a respectable manner. Whats the point if we stoop to madrid's level and commit tasteless acts like falsely accusing messi of spitting on a malaga player in their sports tabloid MARCA?

LINK+messi+barcelona.jpg

Surely we are better than that arent we? Fans must show as much class their team's performances. Goes true for all heh
