Messi Second And Xavi Fifth In Fifa World Player Awards

Monday, 12 January 09, 02:11 PM · Comments (13)

Messi and Xavi

No great surprise I suppose that Fifa named Cristiano Ronaldo their World Player for 2008. Leo Messi came a creditable second with Xavi finishing fifth behing Fernando Torres and Kaka. While it would be nice to see Messi win one of these individual awards, I feel it may just be better for Barça that he doesn't win. In the past players such Stoichkov, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and more recently Ronaldinho have all struggled to maintain their level after winning either the Fifa award or the Ballon d'Or. Maybe it is better to keep the player hungry. Whatever the case, the way things are going I think it is going to take something special to stop Messi cleaning up with the awards next year.

I am not a fan of Cronaldo, in fact I really dislike him and wish he hadn't won but hey I'm not going to say that he didn't deserve it. Messi will most definately win everything next year. Lets hope he stays healthy. Oddly enough Dani Alves just might be Messi's biggest competition next year the way he's been playing.

I dont know Nic, considering the fact he has mesmerizing talent, he also has very impressive statistics to back up his immeasurable skills. We havent even reached the halfway mark of the season yet and this fool has 20 goals and 13 assists to his name.

Next year's top three will be

Messi
Xavi
Alves

funny thing is all these three are our leaders in goals assisted.

I don't think anyone can say Ronaldo didn't deserve it. As we all know it's also important what your club does..and considering they won the epl & cl then I think it's fair he won it.

Having said that..no way will Messi lose it next award. What an absolute cracker of a season he is having.

Imagine... a player injured for a good chunk of the season playing for a team placing 3rd in all 3 competitions (due to an ego infection) being voted in second. I think it says alot about the player and his team. What would have been the case had he played throughout the year on a team that was 10% more motivated? Cristiano who? Manches What?

this was no shock at all and it really should have gone to him. u cant score like he did, carry his team to winning the trophies he did and not acknowledge that. no matter what people here say and what they think of CR, he is a very good player and he is definitely one of a select few that can even be compared to our magic messi.

on xavi, he will never win this award, he isnt flashy enough for it. but im very happy he was acknowledge FINALLY in the top players on earth in such a public spectacle. xavi should have been there year in year out most of his career. very happy for him

Barca is the only team in the world that has more than 2 representatives in the top 10 - 4 Messi, Xavi, Eto'o, Iniesta

With the way we are currently playing, there will be many more players at next years edition.

Despite Barça having an average year , four of our players made it to the top ten players in the world on pure merit and talent . Just imagine if Barça win La Liga and the CL this year. !!
