More Goodbyes

Tuesday, 01 July 08, 10:00 AM · Comments (11)

Yesterday was the end of the footballing year so it was a day when contracts reached their end. So apart from saying goodbye to Deco who has signed for Chelsea, it was also the end of their time at Barça for Santi Ezquerro and Lilian Thuram. After his transfer to PSG fell through, Thuram is now a free agent and it remains to be seen if he finds a club or not. Ezquerro brings to an end a remarkably poor three years at Camp Nou in which he only played 11 league games, I have to say I find it difficult to understand why he didn't leave earlier except of course I imagine nobody would match the wages he was earning here. barça have also lost the services of promising young defender Marc Valiente who has signed for Sevilla where he will begin in their B-team with hopes to be promoted to the first team soon. So far first team players Edmilson, Zambrotta, Giovani, Deco, Ezquerro and Thuram have left the club. Now we will have to wait and see what happens with Eto'o, Ronaldinho, Gudjohnsen, Oleguer...???

I was hoping for once Barcelona would opt to buy a good Goalkeeper. I defended Valdes every time i'm around Barca or non Barca Fans but my God he just doesn't help! They renewed Jorquera's Contract last year and i just couldn't make logic out of it other than he was quite cheap to keep and a Barca youth product.
Then they kept Pinto, no comment.
I mean Madrid had they're well deserved win mostly because they had a Super goalie at the back who did quite amazing saves when they were most needed.
How many times did Casillas save Madrid when the team needed him the most?
I like Valdes, i just think using him as a model or a Beckham like figure is more appropriate, he may surprise you on several occasions but lacks the consistency and you can't have that in a team like Barca.

Nic--re: Ezquerro's decision not to leave earlier, see the following link. Seems like he got a bum deal by a dishonest club president. It's not the best source, but this story was also carried by more reliable media sources at the time.

Hey blaugranafan - I remember the deal falling through at the last minute but i didn't know the reason so thanks for that. However, it still doesn't explain why he didn't move in the winter transfer window last season.

We need to sell Oleguer or Marquez because we have too many defenders even if Henrique is loaned out to Ajax. I'd prefer Oleguer gone.

i still think we need to find a new club for ronaldinho. pretty happy with all the other outgoing transfers except giovani's maybe. thought it was better if he was loaned out rather than sold.

I would like to see Adebayor playin for Barca, maybe Asharvin too, and we need a good central midfield general on my opinion. Someone, reasonably tall, strong and creative at the same time. defends and sprays the ball upfront reasonably well. I like Senna, the brazillian that plays for Spain,,,sad thing is, he's aging. like Fabregas too. he's darn good. y did we give him away anywaY??? What a waste.

Hi Nic, is Barsa planning to buy a left winger? that area looks to be the most worryin department, as i don't see Iniesta havin the pace required to consistantly play in that area. Joe Cole, of Chelsea is romoured to be askin out. And this could come in a good price. I personally think we need to get a really good winger as we have cover at all the other parts of the field provided Eto doesn't leave. Really hope for a better season for Barsa.
