Barça continued their preseason run of good form with a 2-6 win over the New York Red Bulls tonight at the Giants Stadium in New Jersey. The first half was much better than the second when Samuel Eto'o was on the pitch and with two more goals he increased his preseason total to five in just 159 minutes. Joan Laporta, Txiki Begiristain, Pep Guardiola - we have our number nine here already, please don't balls things up by selling him.
Barça dominated the first half completely but took 15 minutes before penetrating the Red Bulls' defence, but when Barça switched into another gear the result was devastating. First Eto'o got past his man on the left and centred for Thierry Henry to finish but from an offside position. Two minutes later Xavi fed Alves on the right and when the cross came in Xavi had moved into the area unmarked to head home the opening goal. Within a minute Barça went two up when Xavi sent a great ball into Eto'o who controlled well before sending a firm side-footed shot past the keeper.
In the 23rd minute Marquez made a good run into the area but his cross was intercepted by a defender sending the ball out for a corner. From Xavi's corner the ball came to Iniesta whose cross/shot was flicked in by Marquez for the third. Three minutes later Henry had a shot turned onto the post and it looked as though Barça were going to run riot. However, in the 30th minute Victor Valdés failed to hold a cross from the left and Stammler was on hand at the far post to fire home.
Barça continued to dominate and Alves made a great run into the area only to see the goalkeeper somehow divert the ball onto the post. Then just before half time Hleb made a good run into the area before pulling the ball back to Eto'o who showed great speed in bursting through the middle and slotting the ball home.
With six half time changes it was always going to be difficult for Barça to keep up the rhythm and the second half was generally disappointing. We did, however, get another chance to see Jeffren and Pedro impress, and the youngsters both ended up on the scoresheet with late goals. Before then a lack of intensity in defence allowed Rojas to grab another for Red Bulls, and this will be an important aspect for Pep Guardiola to deal with in the Champions League qualifier. Incidentally, Barça's opponents will be Wisla Krakow who tonight beat Beitar Jerusalem 5-0.
The main positives to take from tonight's game were the performances from Xavi and Eto'o who both looked in fine form. Thierry Henry was better than against Chivas, and Hleb looks like he could be a good buy. Alves continues to impress but it will take some getting used to seeing a right back turn up in so many positions. And as I said Jeffren and Pedro both continue to show that they may just have enough to break into the first team one day.
For any of you people who made it to the game today, please send us your comments on your first hand impressions and experiences from the game.

incredible first half i must say, looked like the 05/06 barca out there, and as for xKORUS16x, don't get ahead of yourself buddy, you actually think wisla will beat barca? WISLA?? all the boys need to do is repeat the first half performance for the whole qualifier game and i assure you itl be a goal fest. Looking forward to the new season!
Nic, completely agree. The best signing Barca can make at this point is to keep Sammy for another season.
Jeffren and Pedrito look pretty damn good. At least they can provide backup. I don't know if they are 100% ready for La Liga ... but surely Pep will give them some minutes.
What really annoyed me about the game was Abidal. And how he just simply did not care to defend. Barca were up 4-1 and Abidal just let the RedBulls waltz right in. @#%$##^ , If I was Pep .... @#%$@#% . Barca did well to make sure there was no way back for the RedBulls.
I am very happy to see Barca doing so well and getting all of our players into match fitness in time for the Wisla game. Boca @ the camp should be fun tho. Wish they were playing River ... River > Boca
Another great result!
Here are the highlights in all espn glory.

Hey barcacanada, thanks for the link, great goals by Barca, and did you see eto and hleb, amazing 4th goal. But seeing Valdes in the starting line up makes me soo disgusted. Seriously although Pinto hasnt had much game time, he cant be worse then that fumbling idiot, who against Liverpool in the CL 2 seasons ago almost singlehandedly screwed us. I think they should sit him out a few games so he can have time to reflect
Even Jorquera is better...........
Despite that, we seem to be enjoying the football, but we havent really had a challenge yet, we might against wisla, but i'm quite confident we will win
I didn't see the 1st NY goal, but I don't think the 2nd goal was Valdes' fault. It was Pique who let the ball handler blow right by him, and then he failed to break up the pass.
I had it TiVo'ed since I'm at work. Looking forward to seeing Barça play again.
WOW BARCA SHOWED GOOD PASSIN ABILITIES ONCE MORE.. I THINK RAFA AND PUYOLL SHOWED ACTUALLY THE SAME DEFENCE WHEN THY WON THE TWO LIGA'S AND THE CHAMPIONS... PIQUE SUCKED AND ABIDAL WAS OK.
VALDES! SHOULD LEAVE BARCA PLEASE OCHOA IS REALLY GOOD QUALITY PEOPLE DONTA TAKE IT JUST BECAUSE HES MEXICAN !NO!
ITS BECAUSE HES ALOT BETTER THAN ALL THE BARCA GOALIES AND YES JEFFREN AND PEDRO ARE GOOD...
KEEP SAMUEL ETO HE IS THE BEST GOALSCORER IN THE WORLD HE HAS SCORED HALF THE GOALS BARCA HAS SCORED THIS PRESEASONE...
PEP IS AN AWESOME COACH HE WANTS THE BEST FOR THE PLAYERS AND HE NOWS MESSI IS NOT NEEDED FOR THE FIRST LEG SO HE WANTS WHAT MAKES HIM HAPPY..
BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS WHAT PUYOL AND RAFA SHOWED BY BEING SOLID AS HELL ONCE AGAIN... THE COMBINATION OF A TIGER GOIN FOR WHATEVER IS ON HIS WAY WITH RAFA'S GOOD PASSIN ABILITY AND HEADING ABILITY KEEP IT UP GUYS
Valdes is a good goal keeper. AGAIN being not as good as Iker doesn't make him bad and its not a good enough reason to leave the club as well. The second goal Valdes could have stooped it but it was Pique who should be blamed for the goal. If we as fans of Barca won't give Valdes the respect he needs after all these years who will. The first goal was his fault but people do mistakes, specially in friendlies that your winning 3 to nothing.
Prediction
Eto'o = 20 GOALS
Henry= 14 GOALS
Opinion
Henry can't play LF o RF
Eto'o scores any angle you put him.
Henry is aching to play in USA.
Eto'o wishes fans from Barca would love him with no thought of USA.
CONCLUSION
Henry WAS a great goal scorer
Eto'o IS a GREAT goal scorer
Barca fans?
agree with you-Garrett..but i think eto'o will score more than 20 goals this season..the best thing to do is keep eto'o.
yoh yoh yoh wisla??? beat barca @camp nou HHAHAHAHAHAHA not only is the pitch bigger than wisla ever played in they are worse than any of the teams barca played this preseason at their best cumo'n guys give me a f@#$ing break
Barca fans,
Here is my prediction for the upcoming season: it will be another trophyless year if Guardiola insists on starting players like; Valdes,Abidal,Henry and Marquez !! These players ,in addition of lacking basic ball skills, are prone to making STUPID decisions and costly mistakes . Actually,I would prefer to see"anybody-but-Valdes" in goal, Bojan should start ahead of Henry and I would rather see either Perdito or Jeffren more frequently in the lineup.
Sorry, I meant both " Perdito and Jeffren ". They are talented players with good good future . I hope the club does not end up selling them "for cheap" as often the case !!
messi should have no problem in ronaldinho's old place as he can connect with others or make runs himself. Bojan should definitely start more than a few games. I still think henry has the skills, but is he really using them? maybe he and alves should swith positions.
check out my blogs btw: bayer04ever and bundesliga blog
The Club started the appeal process to set a precedent. I think that great foresight was sown by doing this. I can, from now on, see contracts having a national team clause clearly stipulated from now on since a formal and final decision was taken on this. Once again, Barcelona is leading the way for all clubs around the world. I clearly made the argument on this forum that Argentina has no standing by law and that has been validated. I do not think we should recall him since that will be a lack of class at this point. But the technical direction did very well by bringing a judicial proclamation about!!!I am very happy about this since I know that this type of contention will not happen again.
i love ur support for VV joehenry. honestly it annoys me that people here give him so much grief. sure he dropped a ball a few times. basically any keeper does. including the magnificent cech, he got his entire team thrown out of the euro. im so sick of people thinking football is like a computer game and u can just replace everyplayer with someone better. VV is a very good goalkeeper and he proved it for for at least 4 seasons before hte last 2. sure last yr wasnt a good yr for him, but who had a good yr? there are only 3 worldclass keepers who are better but they are not transferable. VV is easily in the top 6 or 7 keepers in teh world. i invite anyone to name 7 better besides buffon, cech and casillas. im sick of this arguement however.
on the game, xavi was amazing and its about time people give him his dues. he has been my favorite player in that team since i first saw him play at age 20. ive backed him as the best center midfielder in the world for yrs and finally people realize. etoo finishign was unbelievable. abdial looked terrible and was totally to blame for the second goal, he didnt try to close down the player AT ALL. was embarrassing. valdes just tried to clean up his mess and pique didnt look great either. otherwise im loving this jeffren kid too.
Game Resume as I saw it:
First, let me start by stating that Barcelona had more fans at the stadium than the home team. So, amigos y amigas, "WE ARE NOT ALONE!" and after the second goal, I heard what I thought was a Real Madrid song "Asi, Asi, Asi gana Barca".
1st Half:
Most of you have already seen the game on tv, so I will spare you the useless. Barcelona started out with passing game led by Keita, Iniesta and Xavi. The build up took longer to materialize because of a basic flaw in Thierry Henry's lack of understanding of the game. First, Hleb, Danni Alves, Xavi and Keita would combine very great passing on the right but once play transitioned to Iniesta for Abidal and Thierry Henry, the flow of play would break and the momentum would have to be returned back to the right because Henry was either too static when he drew his defender to the right, not ready for the ball or when space was created Abidal was too conservative to exploit it with a run. Then after 7 or 8 passes play returned back to the right side where attempts were made to include Eto'o, who responded really well with accurate back passing to either Xavi or Hleb who, by that time, were either marked tightly or had little space. This is the very reason it took us 15 minutes to see our first goal, which was more the result of a two man combination than a materialization of the team's effort. After the first 15minutes, Henry decided to run more thus started benefiting from the transitional play from right to left then Iniesta also became a bigger part of the game the goals followed since the team's flow was total and throughout both flanks.Seydou Keita was so much better today. I was really impressed and I am going to predict that he might, emphasis on might, take Yaya's place in the middle. His style of play jives better with that of Xavi and Iniesta: He was tough off the ball and very skillful with it, which in my book adds quality to our ability to truly be one attacking unit.
Eto'o should stay he's great!!! Barca are gonna destroy Wisla aswell!!!
In addition, Seydou Keita seems to be quicker than Yaya Toure. I am very glad to have seen this side of him that I really liked in Sevilla last year. Eto'o played very and I agree with Nic that Bojan should be in the starting line up. I am bringing up Bojan while talking about Eto'o because I think that those two have styles of play that fit very well. we will score more goals with Eto'o and Bojan than with Eto'o and Henry. Valdes made a mistake on the first goal since that should have been punched out not batted down like a little sissy. I don't like being tough on him but he needs more competition in the form of a better second goalkeeper at Barcelona. Someone last year, I believe, it might have been winterhunt asked the forum to remind him a time, just one time, when Valdes actually kept us in a game, any game...and the forum was silent since his point was valid. I have seen winterhunt here of late but I will take his argument to the masses and ask the following: "Can anyone on this forum tell me when did Valdes keep Barcelona in a game?" and I mean in a big way. As much as I hate saying this, I can come up with a dozen examples as I write this when I think of Real Madrid's Iker Casillas.I hope that you see my point. Thus the first half would have been somewhat positive if not for that.
Second half:
This part of the game seems to have been an opportunity for Pep to finally make up his mind on the possible future trades (Guddy), gauge Martin Caceres further in the central defense, and settle on which of the youngers would break out this year. Again, we lacked rythmn because of Guddy's "gut", for Pete's sake the guy can't take one on one these lowly MLS defenders, I am sorry but he has no place on our team. He was vile in his demeanor and defended poorly. He was slow getting back goal side on his man and miscued many passes. He didn't seem to be part of the free flowing football we are known for. He just looked like Santa Clause, without presents, in a Barcelona Jersey and I say enough to that. That performance from Guddy was as shaky as cafeteria "Jello":sell him fast!!! We can get much more out of Pedrito, who I think might be able to challenge for a strating spot in no more than 2 seasons. Jeffren is a money maker for the club. He will score goals, if given the opportunity and will set up his teammates. He workrate his very high and seems to be very skillfull with the ball. I say let's give him some good minutes and sell him in two or three years. MY PLAYER, martin Caceres did just ok in the second half. His performance was not Earth chattering and I found it nice that Puyol was fully taking advantage of the right flank as an attacking right back:very refreshing to see that!!! I also, think that Bojan will have a great season this year. He plays passionate football and that combined with his skill could yield great results this year. Nic did a great job with the goals, so decided to focus on something else instead. I hope that you guys found this useful.
PS: Nic, our group got a camera shot after the second goal but with the excitement we went up without the sign (isn't ironic???), then we kept looking for a shot the rest of it but to no avail. Just know that we had a huge (WWW.FCBNEWS.COM) sign for the forum!!!
Hey Diatus, I was looking for the banner with no luck. Thanks anyway for the publicity, keep spreading the word.
@RUtalking2me, Maybe we won't win anything ( I REALLY DON'T THINK SO) but this is a Barca I can cheer for. We actually have a team. Football is not always about winning ; Its about seeing good football on the pitch. I see that in Barca, that it is the reason I began to cheer for Barca in the first place. You really sound like a Madrid Fan ;" WE WON NINE CL ". True but you suck ; I don't like the way you play and I will never will. I'm happy to see Barca play that well even if we didn't win anything unlike last year when every player wanted to play for himself so he can leave this summer ; now we have a team. But no offense to you I think we will win many things this year and as for the goal keeper, well maybe he isn't the best but its our job to cheer for him every match to bring him to that level.
@ blaugranaboy , I agree with you 100%. Life isn't a computer game. As fans we should back up our players. Valdes has tons of mistakes but believe it or not I believe he can be great in due time. he is still young after all.
Joe Henry
What are U really saying, Barca spend 93mil, and the transfer season hasn't ended as yet that is 40% of all the transfer money spent in the top flight in spain, what did Barca spend that money for, is it not for winning " trophies"? If this season ends without a trophy somebody should be held responsible and step down. You think all Barca is spending money is to play pretty boy soccer. Look at Arsen Wenger he is the most succesful manager for Arsenal with the amount of trophies and also his style of playing he makes Arsenal play is lovely, but a few season has passed and he hasn't win any trophy and he is under severe pressure and he didn't even spend half the money Barca has spend. If Barca continue to spend all these money and don't win a trophy what u think will happen to the club financially eventually??????
We need a bit more assertiveness and creativity from the left side of the field, particularly from Abidal. But that being said, I still think we're going to have a great year... with at least one trophy.
@Barcel . I didn't say winning isn't important. I just said that there is a difference between this year and the last. We will win trophies this year I asure you ! But that wasn't my point, You just miss understood me friend. I'm saying that this year even if we didn't win anything ( That won't happen ) This is a Barca the fans could and should cheer for.
couldn't watch d match, but from dis comments, valdes is stil d same as well as henry n gudjohnson....i just hope d good signs will overwhelm d bad signs
