Numancia 1 Barça 0

Sunday, 31 August 08, 02:10 PM · Comments (23)

Barça began the new league campaign with a horribly disappointing 1-0 defeat to newly promoted Numancia. Barça never recovered from an early goal from Mario, and as we have seen so many times before, the team lacked patience in the build-up which led to wayward passes and fruitless dribbles. Numancia packed their defence leaving little room for Barça's forwards and when the chances came we were guilty of poor finishing.

Barça started well enough and Leo Messi forced the first save of the game with a low drive from outside the area after two minutes, then in the tenth minute Samuel Eto'o volleyed over from Iniesta's cross from the right. However, with Numancia's first real attack of the game they went ahead on 13 minutes: Bellvis found himself in space to cross and both Puyol and Abidal followed centre forward Gorka Brit leaving Mario free at the far post where he fired home from 15 yards giving Valdés no chance.

Barça nearly bounced straight back after a good build-up from Iniesta, Eto'o and Messi put Thierry Henry through but his shot was blocked by goalkeeper Pablo. Then in the 17th minute Eto'o hit a curler from 25 yards which clipped the top of the crossbar. After this, however, the chances dried up as Barça lost their patience, only a couple of dangerous crosses from Xavi and Iniesta caused any alarm to Numancia's defence but no forward could get on the end of them.

The second half saw much of the same: long shots going wide, crosses that found nobody, and passes through the middle that were intercepted. Hleb, Keita and Bojan came on, Messi played in the hole behind the strikers, but the penetration wasn't there. As Numancia played deeper and deeper the chances began to arrive: Eto'o forced a diving save with a snap shot in the 69th minute, then Bojan forced his way through before shooting straight at the keeper. Bojan and Eto'o both had chances with headers but both were off target.

In injury time Barça won the first dangerous free kick of the game but Messi's shot came back off the far post with the keeper beaten. It summed up Barça's luck in a game where we created 11 goal opportunities to Numancia's one.

Numancia deserve credit for defending doggedly throughout, but Barça will need to find ways to get past teams that play like this. There are questions to be asked as once more we concede a goal with an unmarked player sneaking in at the far post. However, in general we cannot complain about the commitment of the team, it seems that sometimes we can try too hard when we go behind in a game and many players were guilty of trying too hard to find an equalizer on their own. There were too many lost passes through the middle, too many poor shots from outside the area and too many dribbles that went nowhere. No player can be said to have had a good game but especially disappointing was Dani Alves making his league debut and Leo Messi who tried all he could but had no luck with anything he did. We now have a two week break before the next league game and Pep Guardiola will have to try to correct things while the majority of players are away on international duty.

Barça: Valdés 6, Alves 4.5, Marquez 5.5, Puyol 6, Abidal 5; Xavi 5.5, Toure 5.5 (Hleb m57, 6), Iniesta 5.5 (Keita m66, 6); Messi 5, Eto'o 5.5, Henry 5.5 (Bojan m61, 5).

Goal: m13 Mario 1-0

Barça yellows: Puyol m42, Eto'o m80.

Yaya shoud not start in front of Keita. That goal was ridiculous. If you are a right back , as in the case of Danni Alves, and you want to play like a forward well doggit you will give up the cross. I bet you Valdes could have defended the shot better had he stayed in his box.

All of you nostalgics,

I hope you cut the crap and recognize that we were too one dimensional...Again, Thierry Henry shouldn't even be allowed on the bench...he is useless!!

Terrible terrible day for me...I called in sick at work just to support the team in the first day, and this is what I get?? It's a disastrous result...Altho the league is not won or lost in the first day, we should all be alarmed by this performance....Abidal was useless...Danny was a disappointment...His penchant for goin forward made us suffer today cuz that guy made the assist from the right....and that damn Abidal was nowhere near that Mario guy....Xavi, INiesta, Toure, Messi, Henry, Etoo, in short all the players had an off day....Messi kept on tryin hard..That freeekick shoulda gone in...damn...There's no doubt abt his commitment (only if everyone was committed like him), but still, we expected somethin more from him...I would still say that he was the best player on this pitch for us, but that's not sayin much cuz our players were all pretty bad...Anyways, it def. brought back those painful memories of the past 2 seasons....I mean there was no sense of urgency at all until the last 5 mins or so...I just hope we bounce back from this defeat and give this season a different finale from the last 2 seasons...

If Barca continue play like that, i bet you this season we will have no trophy to win! what a shit!! i don't know why it has been so hard to score and play like pre-season games! I'M VERY DISSAPPOINTED!

well , tonight we all wanted to get rid off the last year's memories but seems it was another night of last year .. i just feel the weakness every time i see barca playing like this , other team get energized when it comes to 1-0 at the first 15 min and they come back pretty well ,, unlike us and this became the normal react no barca , i just feel we r not the team that other teams should be afraid of ,, NOT ANY MORE !

1. first thing we need to do is take abidal to lab and check his DNA this guy must be a clone lyon sent us that goal was totally his fault, how do you leave your man and run and attempt a clearing header that puyol got covered and leave your man with acres of space ?that was a schoolboy error, cant we play caceres at left back???

2. danny alves, he brings to the team what zambrotta didn't,BUT his crosses are as pathetic as guti trying to be david beckham,

3. henry looked like the same guy we didn't like last year & he is taking home €110 000 a week, thats alot of dough for being lazy for an entire half although i don't agree he should play on the left he is really running out of excuses now and needs to bring more bite and goals fast. A game like this is where he should shine and kill of doubters,

4.xavi+iniesta= oil&water this two just didn't click today. maybe its the small size of pitch that they cant exploit spaces but they just didn't deliver

5.messi if you make a pass straight to a numancia defender many times over you probably gonna lose the game ok buddy.

In my own opinion eto'o and henry should NEVER play together in a 4-3-3 system it just doesn't work rather put inesta or hleb on the left and BENCH henry. The front three's understanding and communication was laughable in this game it was embarrasing. i could'nt understand why we played so many long balls forward i really don't,

I am just gonna take comfort in knowing this was just 1 game and there are 37 more games left, and this opener is not the mark of the season to come ahead

Like Nick, my one consolation was that Real Meh lost too. My opinions have been posted on my own blog, but in a nutshell, Barça need to make more quality shots (ones the keeper actually has to do something about), and they must vary their attack more. Tiki taka is one form only. Learn from Spain in Euro2008.

blaugrana_namibia -----i agree with every point u made, everything!!

when henry gets the ball, the only thing he does is try to get past the defender and cross it in...he barely ever shoots.....the one shot i remember him shooting 2day was terrible and went straight to the keeper!

what worries me most is that barca played exactly like they did last season....i saw no improvement at all....it was exactly the way they played last yr...so im worried they will continue playing crap for one another yr

honestly i think everyone is exaggerating the severity of this loss. no doubt its disappointing but most of you are being tricked into thinking our pre-season results are meaningful, pre-season is NEVER meaningful. this was our toughest match to date. numancia are a hardworking team that tactically were spot on and gave us no space. the field was tight and the stadium was loud. give them all the credit they deserve.

on our side, yeah for the most part we were poor. i thought messi floating everywhere was not beneficial, we lost our shape totally, and he kept trying to cut in and make random crosses into the middle for no particular reason. alves, dont remember if ppl recall, but when everyone was saying WOW, YES ALVES, u can go back and read my post, i said i thought he was slightly overrated. his crosses often had no point. but still he is better than that and will show it im sure. abidal, well, everyone here knows he sucks, he is a useless football player. the goal was totally hsi fault and he makes mistakes like he enjoys it. he is def the biggest liability right now! henry was back to much the same, falling on his ass for no reason and losing the ball, but he did try a put in a few crosses, i def think hleb merits that spot more.

but honestly, its the first game, with a new coach, new philosophy, new players. lets start hitting panic stations after about 5 proper games. i thought there were encouaraging signs to be honset. pep say the team wasnt working and made substitutions quickly to fix it, i thought that was a positive sign. u could see he was unhappy and im sure he let the players know it. the players too tried harder than last yr, but it was too rushed and uncoordinated, but they tried.

sucks its int break now, but seriously, lets not go crazy with the negativity, lets give them a few games to find their stride.

i dont think the goal wasnt valdes's fault, abidal needed to see the run that was being made, and mark the man on his wing. He is a woeful defender and we need to get a replacement, or let someone else play there. I agree with blaugrana boy though, its still early times, i hope we can correct the same mistakes we were making last year. we have 2 weeks till our next game so pep can sort his team out. atleast we know we all have the same bitter taste in our mouths for the next 2 weeks, so we are not alone :)

the goal was no where near valdes's fault, thats completly ridiculous to even acuse him. he saw a guy totally alone in the box, any keeper of quality knows u run out and close down the space and hope u get a block. everyone knwos it was abidal's fault, he jumped with puyol for some unknown reason.

i wish we did have 2 weeks to get it right. unfortuntely its a stupid international break and the players have to go to their national teams. really unfortunate for us because hrs on the training pitch is exactly what we need

What a great start to the season, well at least it wasnt a newly promted side now that would be a bit embarrassing. Can we please please sell Henry.

abidal, henry, abidal, henry.......isnt it funny???, same names from last season

well, i dont hav much to say...its how guardiola responds to this that i'm eager to see. only a mad person keeps trying the same thing and expects different results..but i also wanna know why he isn't into hleb...as far as i knw, hleb can play across the forward lines...pray for the best for us, this season will be tough

We spent plenty of money and our left side is still pretty weak... we're left with that thought for another 2 weeks, splendid.

This may be a good thing. MAY BE, If we can learn not to be stupid and always think that we are going to win either we play good or not. Also a chance to show Pep that he is over confident and needs to work harder with the team. Its not preseason any more. He is a great pick but he needs time. I wasn't really happy that Madrid lost. Surprised maybe. But as I said before, I don't want to win the League because Madrid was bad. I want Madrid to be good and win the League. In other words I want Barca to be Good ! One more thing, GET OFF VICTOR VALDES'S BACK ! The goal wasn't nearly his fault. We had a player that was apparently drinking tea with the lines man ( Abidal ), And we have the biggest transfer of the season playing like crap and looked like a foul ( Alves ). Besides the best goal keeper in the world screw up ( Iker ) did any of you actually watch the game ! The two goals was a joke, specially for Iker ! Victor Valdes

layibiyi:
I agree with you. Both Henry and Abidal are totally worthless. Nothing ever happens on the left side when these two are on the pitch. Any left back will be an improvement compared to Abidal. I would rather have Jeffren or Hleb instead of Henry. I think many people can see the problem except, perhaps , the head coach !!

coaches always say we fans dont see d game d professional way....i used to believe some part of this but i've been seeing their professional way throughout the whole of last season and i would not like to see it
but since we are stuck with them for now, nothing we can do than hope and pray

chck this out

the poll shows barca fans prefer both iniesta n bojan ahead of henry upfront....this is no longer news
