Player Of The Month: December 2008

Monday, 22 December 08, 02:50 PM · Comments(15)

Thierry Henry claims the match ball after his hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Valencia

December has been another great month for Barça with wins over Valencia, Madrid and Villarreal, only the defeat at home to Shakhtar spoilt it but then again that game didn't really count for anything. Having now checked the points totted up by each player you can imagine my surprise to find that the December player of the month is none other than Thierry Henry. Regular readers will know I have not been Henry's biggest fan since his arrival at Camp Nou but his improvement this season has been notable, he started this month with a hat-trick against Valencia and yesterday he grabbed the vital winner at Villarreal and was for many people the man of the match. In an interview last week Henry revealed that he has fallen in love, could this be the reason for his current form? If so, there is a woman out there who deserves the thanks of every culé.

This month's top 5 is as follows:

  1. Thierry Henry
  2. Dani Alves
  3. Victor Valdés
  4. Xavi Hernandez
  5. Toure Yaya

There's one regular on this blog out there who i'm sure will be delighted. Titi186, I hope you're reading mate.

loooool!

Do not show this to blaugranaboy he will have a miserable christmas :D Only joking dude!

I always defended him, however even I at the end of last season thought he had lost it, but 8 league goals in 16 games tells me he is still a quality player and for sure deserves it. Messi has been average, Eto the same, Henry won us 2 games out of the "big 4" games, enough said tbh.

Have a good holidays everyone!

I haven't really been a big fan of Titti of Barca, but damn..u gotta give credit where it's due..He really deserves the player of the month award...Like someone said, he won us the 2 of 4 big games plus he made an assist in the REal Madrid game...I jsut hope this form continues...

and abt the list....is it the first time that Messi hasn't even featured in the top 5??

Maverick - I just had a look through the previous months - LINK and the only months Messi didn't feature were Dec 07, Jan 08, and March 08 when he missed games through injury

Henry absolutely deserves the player of the month award. He has improved a lot the past few months, and this month was great. It's also great to see Valdes in the top 5.

Messi won't always have his Messiah games, but he has been more important this month than most give him credit for. The big teams put a great effort in closing him down, which open up big spaces for Henry, which he took advantage of. Great teamwork.

I have to agree with you, Nic, though the Frenchman hasn't had a very convinced supporter in me as well. Thierry may not be the Henry of old, but what he is now is nothing to shrug at. The man can set it up as well as make the shot, and he's starting to make very nice runs down that left flank. Kudos to Henry!

yeah, he deserves it, he has finally got going, hopes he keeps it up, we need all our players at their best so opposing teams are in confusion of how to go about the marking

voonte: good point u noted, i think guardiola put messi in the middle against all the big teams so he can attract a lot of our opponents central defensive soldiers thus making room for henry and eto to try and make runs down the flank, i wait to see whether this continues in january. . . . .

also yaya toure has been immense this month and i'll put him ahead of valdes and xavi, he's very important

He is a wonderful player, remindes me of a deer in his elegant movement.
He comes to life in the center,
Barca needs him for his maturity - remember Henrik Larssen??

Definitely deserves it. Forget the Henry of Arsenal, this is the new and improved Henry of Barcelona. He makes passes, runs at defenders, tracks back, wins possessions and it was only a matter of time before he started scoring vital goals for the team. The man is determined to end his career off on a high note.

If we go back to the beginning of the season and tell ourselves "Henry is going to win player of the month for one of the most difficult months of the season", we would have been laughing hard considering ourselves to be good comedians eh?

Just out of curiosity, how many players on the current squad played in the game when we won the Champions League in 05/06? Valdez, Eto'o, and Puyol? Maybe Iniesta? Sylvihno?

Thinking about layibiyi's comment, it's good that a lot of our players really relish the opportunity to win that most prestigious cup. Messi and Xavi both missed out on that game through injury and you know they are dieing to play in the final game. Henry was on the wrong side in that encounter and I'm sure he doesn't want that to be the closest he ever got. And of course all of our newer players have a real hunger to bring in trophies. Hopefully this will power us on in our quest for glory this year.

when i read this headline i was honestly taken aback. i have so much to say, but really am not going to go into depth because i feel it would be futile. what i do want to say, is that im really blown away at how most of u have reduced ur standards and expectation of what a player of his caliber and reputation should be doing. i know he has been improved of late, and his effort is undeniable, but really for his hatrick and assists vs Madrid (something i could have done) he still looks the most clumsy and is the least useful player on our starting 11. people seem to only remember his good, like yes, nice finish vs villarreal, but what about his useless miss in the 2nd minute?

but hey, ill let him have his day. its good he has some fans backing him, its better for the team that he feels wanted and performs at least better than last year. personally, i dont think i can ever really care for him as a cule, and i cannot wait for the day we replaced him.

take it easy blaugranaboy.....i understand henry might be one of the less valuable players in the first team but i also understand the fact that no team can ever be super complete unless its an all-star team, there has to be some players more valuable than the others.....
this month, it happens that it was one of the less valuable players that was consistent hence him winning the award, i also believe we can get more from a replacement for henry but at the moment, he got the job done for a big team like barca so i'll make do with him
