Player Of The Month: November 2008

Monday, 01 December 08, 11:54 AM · Comments (16)

Leo Messi scores the first of his two goals in Barça's 0-3 victory at Sevilla

Not really much surprise here. Despite some excellent performances from his team mates in November, Leo Messi who won the award in October is once again my player of the month. Messi played in 7 games this month, and the only one of those games that he didn't score in was possibly his best game of the month: the 6-0 victory over Valladolid. Toure Yaya comes in second and it is great to see the big man back in such excellent form after a slow start to the season. Captain Carles Puyol is third, he has excelled in every defensive position this month but he was especially impressive in the swimming pool game at Malaga. Fourth place goes to Rafa Marquez who has been very solid this month and is looking to be back to near his best, while fifth place goes to Mr. Consistency Xavi Hernandez who began the month with two goals at Malaga.

There should also be a mention for three other players who all performed very well this month and were very close to making the top five: I'm sure Samuel Eto'o would be in many fans' top 5 this month especially after his amazing four-goal game against Valladolid. Unfortunately Eto'o only scored in one other game this month though it was the vital first goal against Sevilla. Dani Alves has been much better over the last few weeks which is very encouraging, he worried me a bit at first but now he seems to be adapting well to the system. And Victor Valdés had a very good month that was only really brought down by a not-so-great game against Getafe. I've said it before on this blog and I'll say it again. Valdés is an excellent keeper and I hope he continues at the club for many years to come.

Ok, just to recap, here's this month's top five.

  1. Leo Messi
  2. Toure Yaya
  3. Carles Puyol
  4. Rafa Marquez
  5. Xavi Hernandez

About Madrid signing Klaas Huntelaar. He is a good goal scorer but technically very average . The Dutch Eredivisie is a weak league . I doubt if he would have any impact in La Liga .

I agree with Messi this month, although I thought he had a very laborious 1st half against Sevilla.
