Player Of The Month: October 2008

Friday, 31 October 08, 06:18 AM · Comments (9)

Leo Messi against Atletico Madrid. Oct 2008

This was a difficult one this month. Having won six out of six in October there are many players in excellent form at the moment. The defence deserves credit for only conceding two goals, but at the other end we have scored twenty this month. In the end the October Player Of The Month goes to Leo Messi who saved us with two late goals against Shakhtar Donetsk and also scored against Atletico and Basle. Second place goes to September's winner Xavi Hernandez who continues to dazzle in midfield, while Samuel Eto'o is only third despite bagging six goals in four games; he would normally win hands down with such a record but it just goes to shows the extremely high standard at Barça these days.

October's top five are as follows:

  1. Leo Messi
  2. Xavi Hernandez
  3. Samuel Eto'o
  4. Andres Iniesta
  5. Eric Abidal

yes, Messi deserves it. i only have one comment on the top 5: WHY ABIDAL?

he HAS been better than normally, thats true, but has he been better than Puyol? Toure? Valdes?

Messi should be the player of the month . No brainer there.
As far as Abidal's choice : no chance in Hell !!

I know Abidal has generally disappointed since joining Barça but I judge things just on October. He played 4 games in the month: against Atletico Madrid he had an excellent game (I gave him an 8 out of 10). Against Athletic Bilbao he got 7.5 and another 7.5 against Almeria. He only got a 6 against Benidorm but was still one of the best as the whole team were below par. Average for the month = 7.25. Puyol had an average of 6.80, Toure 6.50 and Valdés 6.70. Give Abidal guy his due, he had a very good month.

Sometimes you all go by someones reputation and past mistakes and it is unfair. Nic takes the average of the past month not what they have done the month before. Dont get me wrong, since he joined Abidal has been absolutely poor for most of his games but has played very well for the past month and with him in this form he will be missed especially when you consider the poor backup we have. Pretty much agree otherwise really.

Good for him being in the top 5!!

I would have Sammy at #1 because of the goals he score but I'm also happy that Messi is on top. Abidal had a good month and hopefully he's gaining confidence and reaching the form that made Barca buy him. Don't judge him on the past.

Valdes had a good month aswell, kept 3 cleansheets he should be up there as well.
