Player Of The Season 2007/2008

Friday, 30 May 08, 06:35 PM · Comments (10)

A little late perhaps, but I've finally decided on my player of the season. Some will say his stats are not great, but even so Leo Messi has to win the award because he is quite simply head and shoulders above the rest. Only three other players can really take much credit from a generally disappointing season. Andres Iniesta is second because of his remarkable consistency and because he continues to improve, only a niggling knee injury towards the end of the season saw his level drop a bit, let's hope he gets over the problem. Third place goes to Toure Yaya whose performances in midfield had a lot to do with the improved defence in the first half of the season. His back injury had a lot to do with Barça's defensive frailty as the season wore on though he deserves tremendous credit for bravely playing on. Next is Carles Puyol who is the only player who seems to play better when the team are doing badly. A tremendous character to have in the team whether playing at right back or centre back or steaming down the left wing. Fifth place was difficult to choose but I've gone for Gabi Milito who despite the odd dodgy game generally had a very good first season. We will miss him while he is out, I just hope he makes a full recovery.

So my top five are the following:

  1. Leo Messi

  2. Andres Iniesta

  3. Toure Yaya

  4. Carles Puyol

  5. Gabi Milito

Na, Iniesta for me
1. Iniesta
2. Puyol
3.Toure
4. Messi (cos he didnt play as many games)
5. Xavi

I think the best player for the second part of the season was Henry (after Messi ie), I know many won't agree but, he was good. Also, no sign of Eto'o proves that its time for him to leave.

id prob put puyol second. he is just so fantastic. he was asked to play on the right, which he hasnt done in ages, and he always played his heart and never complained. iniesta was great too. im a huge xavi fan so no matter what in my eyes he always deserves to be mentioned cause too often he is forgetten, but his work and his passing and ball rentention is unrivaled to anyone. yaya was also immense. what a signing!!!

having henry name even mentioned in this article makes me sick. henry played well in about 2 games. disgraceful season he had

1. Xavi/Iniesta/Yaya
4.Puyol/Messi

Thats it there.
That 3-man midfield held our season together. Much love 4 Xavi, one of the most under-rated players in the football world. Cant wait to see Xavi an Iniesta (& Cesc) school opponents in the passing game. Spain for Eurocup!!!!!!

@ fcbarcelona-ks - LOL :)

Having Henry at the top will surely piss most people off!

Nah Messi was the best but he is way behind Ronaldo in the World Player thing. As Nic as grudgingly pointed out, his stats arnt those of someone who is the worlds best player with not nearly enough goals or assists to his name.

Thierry Henry played like sh*t most games yet scored more than Messi even though they both play as wingers even though the wing is Messi's natural position and it isnt Henry's. For that reason I am not buying into the hype that Messi is untouchable or the best in the world. Perhaps in Barcelona he is the best performer, yes, but I think this player of the season is pointless because no player played well in every game and they were all average at best. I like Messi alot and have grown to like him more and I think next year he will be better when he has a more mature head.

We have top players being used out of position and the system in my opinion needs to change but as someone pointed out before it seems Pep going to continue the same system as before which is a shame.

How you can mention any defender especially Milito is beyond me. Alright he is a decent player but he is NOT one of the best in the world. The only good player in defence is Puyol. Abidal is not in the top 5 in the world nor is Zambrotta in their respective positions. For a team like Barca who play a narrow midfeild with two wingers, that is not good enough. Anyone who watches the EPL will note the performances of Sagna, Cliche, Evra, and from Spain Alves etc. Barcas full backs are not in their league so in my opinion we need a new defence not 10 more attackers.

Iniesta is the best player. Followed by:

2. Messi
3.Yaya
4.Puyol
5.Henry
6.Abidal

hope we`ll improve a lot in the next season.
Anyway i`m waiting for a new player for the right back
to replace Zambrotta, hope he is Alves!
