Preview: Barça - Atletico Madrid

Friday, 03 October 08, 11:39 AM · Comments (34)

Leo Messi and Simao Sabrosa

Barça go into the last game before the international break on the back of five straight wins. However, the last three of those victories have all relied on late winners against Betis, Espanyol and Shakhtar Donetsk, and with an opponent of the quality of Atletico Madrid, Barça will have to perform well to extend the winning streak to six games.

Atletico began the season strongly but last week's home defeat to Sevilla has seen them slip below Barça to 7th in the table. Coach Javier Aguirre will have to make do without Maniche, Forlan, Simao, Seitardis and Pablo for the visit to Camp Nou and he has called up three youngsters from the youth team, Alvaro Dominguez, Keko and Joshua for the trip. Everyone is talking about a duel between Leo Messi and Kun Agüero, and it is true that Agüero destoyed Barça last season in the 4-2 Atletico victory over Barça last March in El Calderon. However, Atletico have another potential match winner in Maxi Rodriguez, and we'll also have to watch out for Sinama-Pongolle.

For once Pep Guardiola has delayed naming the squad until the day of the match which makes it even more complicated to guess what he's going to do. Hopefully he will return to a 4-3-3 system with Leo Messi starting on the right. I would also expect to see Abidal back in the team, and it would not surprise me at all if Sergio Busquets got another start. Barça won the corresponding fixture last season 3-0 with goals from Deco, Messi and Xavi

Possible Starting XI: Valdés; Alves, Piqué, Puyol, Abidal; Xavi, Busquets, Keita; Messi, Eto'o, Iniesta.

My Prediction: Barça 2 Atletico 1

@ FCB88

It is a shame it really is. If Barcelona was in Paris for example I would pedal bike it to the stadium lol. If Barca and the stupid, stupid La Liga idiots released the fixture list even say a month in advance people like me could take advantage of cheap flights! I personally still think for a team of Athletico's quality and quality of players we have, you'd still hope for something near capacity. :|

As for the game, I think away would be better as even thought they have Maxi and Ageuro, they will still sit behind the ball which unfortunately we still cant counter. Away from home would see Eto's pace and Messi's creativity really come into affect as at Gijon it seems Pep will finally ditch the 4-4-3 away from home and go for 4-4-2 with Messi behind Eto. Tomorrow it will be the useless and ineffective 4-3-3 again with either Henry or Iniesta wasted on the wing and Messi stifled and poor Eto isolated. Shame that.

Prediction with 4-3-3: 1-1

If Iniesta is attacking midfeild and 4-4-2 formation: 3-1

Maybe its cheating a little but maybe Nic wont mind!! =D

Barca 2-1.

I would like to Toure in the starting 11 rather than Keita, as Toure would be able to help stabilize the defence and snuff out any attacks still in their early stages.

I must say that the league administrators have made a complete f**** up of the fixtures this season. LINK

And I agree with Titi on the fact that they should make the fixture list available way in advance so that fans can plan to travel to the stadiums, and secure the cheaper deal. the current set of administrators should all be fired and replaced with ppl who can at least use common sense and brain cells.

i really just hope keita doesnt start. he had a useless game in donesk, honestly was a ghost player. if pep has benched henry/abidal before for bad games keita totally deserves the bench now. otherwise, im super excited for the game. at least at mad wont just park the bus

Yeah lets hope so blaugrana boy as I think we have a better chance fighting attack with attack then if they sit behind the ball and just counter us which especially with Keita "protecting" the back four will be a problem. However, I still am looking really forward to this game no matter who plays I have a feeling it will be Toure, Xavi and Iniesta in midfeild and Henry, Eto and Messi upfront. I love Iniesta's style of play and he a very good game at Donetsk, but I've said time and time again he is wasted on the wing. He could be the new Deco, the one who unlocks defences and utilizes Eto and dare I say it Henrys runs and pace. Still, should be a great game anyhow!!

Come on Barca!! =D

Regarding what FCB88 said again, I went to the Barca seat there was around 3000 empty seats which isnt bad. It would be nice to have a full house but if there is 3000 free seats doesnt that mean that there is 80000+ full seats? Im not sure of the exact current capacity so if someone could offer the info I would appreciate it

exact capacity is 98,772.
so 3000 free seats means a good 95,000 there, which is relative to other countires incredibly impressive. glad to see it will be basically a full house!

the barcelona board should as a matter of urgency do something concerning our defence and goalkeeper by signing a promising goalman and to tight our defenceline. valdes has wonout in hiscapability. A sticht in time saves nine.

Pique needs to be playing center back............ hes a much more solid presence there and is a big body in the middle of the defence. puyol and marquez on the flanks.

I would really like to see Busquets back in the holding position for this match. That boy impresses me to no end. His vision for cutting off the pass is phenomenal, undoubtedly a consequence of his positioning. Toss in his creativity in the attack and I'm looking at the next Guardiola. Of course, it's not that easy. Barça already have Toure and Keita as the default holding midfielders, so for a 20 year old to usurp their position will require some dressing room diplomacy. And, it needs to be remembered Busquets is only 20, so he's still in development (now there's a scary thought: the boy could actually get better than he is now).

I think Sport1 shows some La Liga games. I find watching an entire Barca game emotionally draining. I would rather check the result on line or watch the game's highlights, if Barca wins !! Speaking of crap, Barca does not play crap football but we sure do have some crappy players. Let's just leave it at that because some player can be considered good by some Barca fans and total crap by others. Isn't this the idea behind a healthy debate ? Just because we tend to disagree with each others sometimes, we are all Barca fans. Go Barca !!

I agree with you about Messi and Ronaldo. However, I would not be surprised if the Diving One was chosen as FIFA world player of the year. Let's face it, it is all about winning the CL. It is very subjective. Ronaldo had a good year but he had the luxury to score many of his goals against crappy opposition. Oh, he also took all the penalties and free kicks for his team. He was noticeably absent in the big games. His penalty miss in the final almost cost his club the trophy. By the way, why are Messi and Eto'o alternating taking penalty kicks ? It is as if Guardiola is trying to make it difficult for Messi. I say, let Messi take ALL the penalties. He may have a shot at winning the FIFA award. Eto' o does not !!

I hope you are right but it seems that the key player of the club that wins the Champions League ends up winning the FIFA award. Does anyone know of any precedence that suggests otherwise ? Oh, winning the Olympics' title for Argentina can only help Messi's cause !! Even if Messi misses out on the award, he is still the BEST player in the world nevertheless !!
