Readers Vote Messi As Player Of The Season

Saturday, 04 July 09, 12:13 PM · Comments (37)

Leo Messi celebrates his goal in the Champions League final

It seems as if the majority of readers agree with me that Leo Messi was our best player in the 2008/2009 season. Messi polled 333 votes giving him 56% of the vote. In second place with 109 votes (18%) was Andres Iniesta, followed by Xavi Hernandez with 57 votes (10%), Thierry Henry 33 votes (6%), Samuel Eto'o 25 votes (4%), Toure Yaya 12 votes (2%), Dani Alves 12 votes (2%) and Gerard Piqué 5 votes (1%). The new poll continues the Eto'o or Villa theme: who do you want to see as our first choice striker next season?

A rather predictable top 3. Messi 100% deserves the top award. However, Im not sure about Xavi in third. Iniesta was great, but Xavi was more productive, influenced games more, and is for me still a better player. I suppose people must of voted with their heart at times, but still Iniesta is worthy of 2nd.

Titi and Eto were also good choices for 4th and 5th, at the end of the day they put the goals in the back of the net so deserve their places.

Another day, another day of nothing from Barca.

I would just be happy if they signed Eto to a contract, after that I dont care who they sign lol

I have to go with Messi as the player of the season.

Let's not forget that this poll represents a very small percentage of Barça fans (

Anyway ,

Let's hope we get some QUALITY reinforcements at some key positions ( LB , LW and GK) .

It seems that David Villa situation is shaky at best .

If we are unable to either resign Eto'o or get a world class CF replacement we could be screwed !!

Oh please Titi, Eto'o four or fifth place? I'm amazed at the degree to which fan let the likability of a player affect their judgment. Eto'o was the key to this season. The best decision Guardiola made all year was not getting rid of Eto'o as planned. Eto'o sacrificed the golden boot for his team and then scored the decisive and game-changing goal in the Champions League final, and he gets fourth or fifth in the poll? Curious if not objective. Look Eto'o is the best and most consistently best strike in soccer. He's not cute or lovable. He's got a chip on his shoulder, but he rains in goals and he does so when it matters. Read his numbers on wiki. Count his trophies, his awards. Nobody compares at his position (Raul and Ruud have faded from their pride, I'm afraid). He's also on the verge of breaking about half the club records at Camp Nou. I'm not taking anything away from the other candidates, I'm just saying Eto'o like Messi like Iniesta like Xavi is the best in his position in the game. It's a four way tie for best player. Therefore Henry comes in second.

im sorry but i have to say messi was the best this year.... there is no tie for first it was just his year. I cn understand why you think eto'o is the best he is a phenomenal player but don't compare him to messi....no one can compare to messi this year...

Yeah Messi played beautifully. No doubt. I'm just saying that a month after Eto'o scored the most important goal in Barca history maybe we should cut him some slack and give him some recognition, because he's always been overlooked at Nou. And what did he get? 5% of the vote? That's just wrong.

Victor Valdes is the player of the season!!!
if he didnt make 2 saves against didier drogba...Barcelona would not have make it through the finals!!!!!!!

this is the PLAYER OF THE SEASON not player of 2 games.......

do you truly believe that he was the player of the season??....if so tell me why..

@ malvolio

i think that eto'o is a magnificent player and yes eto'o does deserve more respect but i would put him at 3rd if it were up to me....messi...xavi and ini 2nd then eto'o....alves....henry...etc etc

@ vinnie3 ,

" Victor Valdes is the player of the season!!! "

If Valdes is that good how come he can't even make it as the THIRD goalkeeper for Spain ?

Just because he made some one on one stops against some " dummies " does NOT make him the player of the season !!

@ vinnie3,

yes Valdes saved 2X in the game against chelsea but what do you think if messi did't passed the ball to iniesta for our only goal in that game..?

barca is a team not one man team..so, everyone played every important role but messi is the best :D

Valdez gets the most underrated player award! I think he had a fantastic year. He's clutch. I'm glad he's coming back. Inside the box one-on-one he's the best in the game.

@ Malvolio , i think u r too emotional to some players or u like to support all those who are criticised most....lol

valdez did grt job in two CL games but still i am happy to release him.Honesty domestic league is more important and 1st priority to all the teams and valdez is a horrible figure there...no doubt.

Eto did a great job with 28 goals in league but again u r praising too much of him.i woud be happy if he is either 3rd or 4th so i think poll results reflects the truth.

No sir, you are wrong. At least in my opinion. This is a blog, it is all based on people's opinion and I just gave mine so dont tell me who is right and who is wrong please.

Regarding Eto, your right in many respects. If he had the looks of Ronaldo and the flair of Messi and even a different skin colour (some would say) he would be more appreciated.

However, being objective which I am, Eto does not deserve a top 2 place. Messi ran rings round people and Xavi was an assist machine to give Eto man easy goals. Im not taking away any of his achievments, but many of Eto's goals were tapping the ball into the net. Most of the work was done by the team and the teams best performers were Messi and Xavi hence why I beleive they were Barca's best players.

Ive watched every minute of every Barca game so I assure you im not a fan just talking rubbish, Im forming my basis of my players of the season on what Ive seen. Messi 1st, Xavi 2nd, Eto/Iniesta 3rd.

Good point .

I think I have to add Iniesta to Messi and Xavi as the driving trio behind MOST of our goals .

Messi ,for example, had 24 assists . Most of them went either to Eto'o or Henry .

I think if Eto'o or Henry were playing for any other club they would NOT have scored as many goals .

Both Eto'o and Henry contributed a lot of key goals BUT most of them were simple " tap-ins " .

The bottom line : Messi , Xavi and Iniesta did MOST of the creative work and Eto'o and Henry helped finishing the job .

I don't know if you agree with me or not but the percentage of missed opportunities by both Eto'o and Henry were VERY high .

Nothing has happened with player movement either in and out .

We are still " haggling " with Deportivo about the signing of Filipe over a couple of millions here or there . It is pathetic if you ask me .

There is a chance we will lose Eto'o and NOT be able to sign David Villa as a replacement .

Then what ?

Titi186
21. Titi186 Wrote: | 15.29CEST | Jul 6, 2009

@ FCB Holland,

For sure Henry and Eto did miss alot of chances. This season I think they can be forgiven though as they were only human and untimately it didnt cost us in any comp since we won them all 8)

However, I think in hindsight, some of their goals were absolutely crucial in the season, Henry's goal @ Lyon when the whole team played worse then a pub team which gave us an away goal, and the equalising and game setting goals @ Madrid were season defining. Eto's goal in the champions league final was of course Barca history making and he should NEVER be treated with disrespect for what he has done on all levels of Barca's games.

However, again, Henry's goals @ Madrid and Eto's in Rome, both came from Xavi and Iniesta's work respectively hence why I do stick to my original statement and say that those two deserve to gain the 2nd and 3rd best player votes in my humble opinion =D

Your right aswell, the Eto/Villa saga is annoying me now. Barca aint broke. Barca have money. Right now we only need 2-3 positions and they are cover only really. However if we lose Eto then that changes. We cant let someone else sign Villa then sell Eto. That would be disasterous.

The morale of the story: SORT IT OUT, AND SOON

I'm confused. You start by telling me I'm wrong, then tell me I'm right, and in between you say, "Don't tell me who is right and who is wrong." :D Um . . . anyway strikers are always going to have a lot of misses and a lot of tap-ins, but you're right (sorry) Eto'o does have the best assist men in the game passing to him.

@Neuro11
Yeah, you're probably right. (oops. sorry.) It is hard to be objective, and I do like underdogs. Did you see the Fifa tactic site where they list their most valuable players via an objective criteria? Very few household names on that list. Messi way down low. (No I am not dissing my boy Messi here, just reporting.)
@Messiah10
You wrote: "You're wrong again. Yaya is the most underrated defensive player." (Seems to be a lot of right and wronging involved actually, yes Titi?) Hey I felt that way about YayA very strongly when they were about to let him go, but during the season I don't think he got ridden nearly as harshly as Valdez did at times (but I suppose some of that comes with being a goal keep). I'm glad Yaya's sticking around.

@ Titi186 ,

" However, I think in hindsight, some of their goals were absolutely crucial in the season . "

No disagreement there .

As you may already know , I was never a big fan of Henry but I appreciated his efforts and overall performance this season . He scored many crucial goals and had several assists as well .

It would be nice if we could keep both players but I doubt if this would happen . I think neither of them will be around in two years from now .

I don't understand the way we are going about signing new players .

Why do we insist on including some of our players in almost every deal is still a mystery to me .

Are we that naive or just too cheap ?

"Did you see the Fifa tactic site where they list their most valuable players via an objective criteria? Very few household names on that list. Messi way down low."

are u really kidding man??it is FIFA who gave him 3rd and 2nd best player award last two occasion and highest probability that they are going to award him 1st this time.its a childish joke, no doubt, that someone rate him from his position in a tactics list.I don know anything about tactic list but i know abt UEFA training where there are videos of star players individual skills.you would be happy there is no video from either messi or cr7 and kaka video is 3 rd from last. =D ....anyway thanks for your great joke. 8)

please dont be offended i was just stating my opinion and that is why all of us use this blog... to read each others opinion ...right?

@ fcb holland

i think the only reason we are including players on deals beacause its only for loans....and its usually younger players that are on the deals and thats good for us (i think) beacause the players get some experience rather than being benched at barca and we get the player we want for cheaper

FCB-Holland
27. FCB-Holland Wrote: | 12.03CEST | Jul 7, 2009

@ messiah10 ,

I see your point .

It is a good strategy for Barça so these young players can gain some needed experience BUT other clubs don't seem to be interested and for good reasons .

If we are that high on Bojan and Caceres why is it that Guardiola has hardly used them this season ?

We need to step up and close the deals on our targets and stop haggling , bargaining and acting CHEAP in the transfer market .

We have lost out on some good players over the years for the same reasons !!

@Neuro11: Here's what the Fifa webpage is calling the Castrol Index: a new way of rating players that's supposedly more objective. My friend Chris, a college soccer coach, thinks it an intelligent approach. I'm a little more skeptical myself.
here

@Messiah
not the least bit offended. I was just kidding.

@FCB Holland: Yeah, Forlan? I mean I like him, but he sure didn't perform well in the big time for Man U. I think Barca's just mindgaming Eto'o at this point and will eventually resign him (though I'm hearing reports to the contrary). Why would Eto'o want to go to Man City?

Barca's transfer policy as someone mentioned "like injured tortoise" will bring them nothing but some wastage in the end. No big deal will wait for them in August. and them seem to pen some deal a day before transfer window closes.

Buying foran rather than villa is a crazy idea. Buy villa or just leave it.why make it funny anymore.

Also our loan policy is also very interesting(if its true wht the paper says)U just cant be too selfish about this. They always offer the proven failure to other teams(like caceres).Thats a joke. And not interested to loan bojan.i don know why bojan is so important to them right now.

Puyol have not done his best season but still a very important player.
Henry have done a much much better season this year! and Iniesta just getting better every year.
Pique and Toure have done a great job in the defense. Dani Alves should be higher up but the Chelsea away game was awful. (redcard) but he have done a great first season.. Xavi the best passer in the world always suberb.
