Real Madrid 2 Barça 6

Saturday, 02 May 09, 03:04 PM · Comments (95)

Have some of that! Real Madrid 2-6 Barça

Football Club Barcelona made history tonight destroying Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. Despite an early Madrid goal from Gonzalo Higuain, Barça controlled the game from start to finish and with a seven point lead now with just four games to go it is almost impossible now that Barça will not end the season as champions of La Liga. Leo Messi and Thierry Henry both scored twice and centre backs Carles Puyol and Gerard Piqué chipped in with a goal apiece, but it was the midfield performance of Xavi, Iniesta and Toure Yaya that really made the difference between the two teams. Real Madrid coach Juande Ramos claimed before the match that he had a "plan anti-Barça", but it didn't matter how hard the Madrid players chased the ball, they were always just too late as Barça moved the ball around in a footballing lesson that Madrid will never forget.

Pep Guardiola stayed true to his footballing philosophy by sticking to a 4-3-3 formation with the same team that drew with Chelsea on Tuesday with just Carles Puyol coming in for the injured Rafa Marquez. There were six homegrown players in the team which once again proves that we have the best youth system in Europe today.

It took us just 24 seconds to force the first save from Iker Casillas when Xavi tried his luck from the edge of the box. Madrid caused us some early problems especially Arjen Robben who started well twice getting past Eric Abidal. However, Barça looked to be in control but we were then hit with a goal against the run of play: Sergio Ramos got past Abidal and crossed to the unmarked Higuain to head past Valdés. Barça responded magnificently, raising the rhythm and hitting back immediately, Messi sent a beautiful chipped ball through to Henry who gave Ramos all sorts of problems on the left, and Henry ran into the area and coolly side-footed the ball past Casillas.

Then in the 20th minute Henry skipped past Lass and Cannavaro came across to make a clumsy foul on the Frenchman. From the free kick Xavi picked out Puyol who headed firmly past Casillas. Madrid tried to come straight back, Robben forcing Valdés to save well with his legs and then Robben sent in Raul whose cross hit Alves but Valdés did well to stop the goalbound ball. From then on the rest of the first half was all one-way traffic as Barça cut through Madrid's defence time and again. Messi was playing in a free role in the middle and he combined superbly with Xavi and Iniesta on several occasions to create chances. Alves sent Messi through but his powerful shot was straight at Casillas and then Eto'o let fly from the right forcing a tremendous save from Casillas. Then a great combination from Iniesta and Messi ended with Casillas again saving from Messi.

Then in the 35th minute Xavi robbed Lass in Madrid's half and sent Messi steaming through, Messi kept his head to slip the ball past Casillas with the outside of his left foot. The writing was on the wall now for Madrid and Barça showed their superiority winning the ball again and again with Toure and Pique both doing a splendid job. Just before half time Alves hit a free kick through a hole in Madrid's defensive wall but Casillas again did well to keep the score down.

We continued in the same way in the second half, Iniesta shot wide from 20 yards and then Messi dribbled into the area before shooting across the face of the goal. Madrid could not get the ball and needed the help of the referee who twice got in the way of Barça moves to win the ball back for Madrid! Then out of the blue Madrid scored a second, Robben sent in a free kick from the right and our defence again left a man unmarked, this time Sergio Ramos who headed past Valdés from close in.

Once again we responded to a Madrid goal by going up the other end to score. The magnificent Xavi sent another pass through to Henry who kept his eye on the ball despite having Casillas storming out of the area towards him, and calmly side-footed the ball past the keeper into the empty net. Eto'o was missing out on the goal-fest stuck out on the right wing but in the 60th minute Eto'o crossed to Messi who missed a simple chance sending the ball wide of the far post.

The difference in class was exemplified by one turn from Iniesta in midfield which left two Madrid players running in the wrong direction as Iniesta slipped between them, unfortunately the frustration showed as a couple of times Madrid players flew into tackles when they had no chance of winning the ball. Barça were quite simply too good and despite the fact that Madrid never stopped running, but they were always behind the ball as Barça continued to move the ball around at a tremendous speed.

Madrid brought on Huntelaar and Van der Vaart for Sergio Ramos and Marcelo in an attempt to make a comeback but it just left more space for Barça to attack. In the 75th minute Messi played the ball into Xavi who held of the defenders and turned beautifully to play the ball back To Messi who again beat Casillas in the one-against-one, this time at Casillas's near post. The best was still to come, Piqué broke out of defence and found Messi who sent the ball out to Eto'o on the right, Eto'o crossed towards Piqué who continued his run into the area and Cannavaro was forced into deflecting the ball towards his own goal and Casillas had to save, Piqué was quickest to react turning the ball back past Casillas for his first league goal and Barça's 100th of the season.

There was still time for Messi to miss another from Bojan's cross, but it really didn't matter. The celebration from the players at the end showed that they know the league is ours. In Barcelona tonight there is a massive party with thousands of fans celebrating on the Ramblas, the league may not be mathematically won but it is surely impossible now that we will let it slip.

This team deserve to be champions, the difference with second place Real Madrid has been clear all season for everyone, today's victory was just the icing on the cake. The football we have played has been consistantly at an excellent level, it is fitting that the team should play such a great game at the home of our greatest rival. Three and a half years ago Ronaldinho earned the applause of the Bernabeu crowd with two goal in a famous 0-3 win. Tonight it was the turn of Xavi and Iniesta, with splendid supporting roles from Messi, Henry, Toure and Piqué. We were better in every department, and Madrid are left with no option other than to applaud our superiority. I am not such a young man any more, and I never believed I would ever again manage to have six orgasms in the same night, but tonight Football Club Barcelona gave me that experience. It doesn't get better than this!

We will just have to hope that the players do not let the euphoria get to them, we will have to produce a similar performance on Wednesday night in London to make it through to the Champions League final, this team deserve the treble this season for the football they have played.

 Barça: Valdés 7.5; Alves 8.5, Piqué 9.5, Puyol 8, Abidal 7; Xavi 10, Toure 9 (Busquets m85, 6.5), Iniesta 9.5 (Bojan m85, 7), Messi 9, Eto'o 7.5, Henry 9.5 (Keita m61, 7.5).

Goals: m14 Higuain 1-0, m16 Henry 1-1, m20 Puyol 1-2, m35 Messi 1-3, m55 Sergio Ramos 2-3, m58 Henry 2-4, m75 Messi 2-5, m83 Piqué 2-6.

Barça yellows: m23 Abidal, m38 Puyol

hey diatus man, im so jealous u got to witness that history. just watch urself on the streets tonight, football is more than a game and u dont want to get urself in any trouble with any ultra sur. just keep safe. and if u see that taxi driver again u can tell him to go.... well, do something to himself.

on the game, there is no need to say much more, the players on the field said absoultely everything. xavi and iniesta showed today their football minds are a class above everyone else, they are just so incredible and mean so much to me. yaya is the best def mid, bar none, and i want to see him grace our shirt forever. messi came back with such a bang tonight, best player alive, it was honestly easy for him tonight to pass players of their "quality". henry, well, never have i disliked a barca player so much, and never have my opinion changed so drastically. i actually feel something for him now, he was excellent, great touches, just great. and well, PIQUE, he was perfect. im so amazed at his drastically fast improvement, the commentator rob palmer (i think, and side note, he really watches football well and notices true things) said he has been our best CB and its true. he was legendary today and i was SO SO SO happy when he got that goal. i couldnt stop smiling and laughing.

we are the best team in europe, play maybe the best football ever, and no matter the result on wed, thats a fact.

only saddish note was id love etoo to have scored. that would have taken his confidence back to its level, especially in madrid. saying that he looked like he enjoyed the victory as much as anybody.

last point, i was saving this until we won the leauge for sure, but it really should be safe now. one man who deserves HUGE credit is obviously Guardiola, but also LAPORTA. for all the stupid critcism he got earlier, it was him who took a chance on our legendary midfielder and ignored the experienced mourinho. he deserves praise for his belief and instincts.

on the shirt, there is an article on goal joe henry put before, but i knew it already.

its a charity messi is very active in for a disease called Fragility Syndrome X. its a mental disorder that affects emotions and other things, like autism. messi feels a strong connection to it due to his his former hormonal issues during his childhood. he was showing some support for it. BUT also, there was an article in a madrid paper today, sort of playing on the words, saying messi is a "fragile" player that will crack with pressure and such. so it was double meaning.

This is a lesson to the media who gave Barca no chance of winning against Madrid without watching what barca had done all season .
What a match !!!
Every body stood up to the plate today but special praise should go to Xavi, Pique , Henry , Messi and of course Guardiola for motivating the players ..
I just hope justice is too done on Wednesday against Chelski ;) Lets hope so .

Great win . I'm so glad Barça had Madrid totally humiliated and embarrased on their ground and in front of their own fans . I got so fed up with all the Madridistas talking trash non stop . Let's hope they would shut the Hell up now . It was nice to see our players celebrate and rub it in a little bit more . They were celebrating as if the league was already won . That could be . All we need is five more points !!

i could of swore i was expriencing the ultimate euphoria until i find out you were actually at the game, Diatus. after the 3rd goal i mentioned to my friend how amazing it would be to watch the game live, in that way you do about winning the lottery or something. it just seems like it never happens to real people. i'm really glad to hear you were there, representing for FCBNEWS.

so many players were so good tonight, but i really would like to point out Pique's role: hard to think of a step he put wrong tonight. and he was all across the field cleaning things up. and the thing i absolutely love about his performance tonight was the grace with which he deprived the opposition of the ball; he didn't just poke it away but he controlled it time after time and then made a solid pass. invaluable. especially one against Robben in the corner...haha.

the scary thing is it could have been so many more. most teams only score six goals when all of their quality chances find the back of the net and have luck to thank as much as anything. Real, however, has luck to thank that it wasn't more...here we come Chelsea...Forza Barca.

Because of this game, i think LFP should change the name of our encounters with madrid from el-classico to any other thing they wish at least in HONOUR of the legend of first decade of the new millenium and the 21st century. You should remember what cryuff said 'it is not that barca has been playing small club all through but its just that they make the big teams look small'. indeed madrid looked smaller than fulham. Let me save my comments for wednesday night. Two buried, one to go. BARCA FOR TREBLE!!!

At some points (and keep in mind that i hate them) i kind of felt sorry for madrid, sp. for casillas..those minutes in the 1st half after the 3rd goal were priceless, they were chasing Barça's players and their infinite rondo..amazing =D

all were at their best...but few key battles(one way battle though)i loved were:

1)the most praised madrid player in last few months L. Diaraa was so fantastically beaten by henry again and again.....

2) robben another winger who the madrid fans feel like better than messi, looked horrbly helpless when he saw pique in front of him....

3)xavi,i exactly don know how many madrid players were slipped on the field due to his 0-360 degree movement...

4)laporta has beaten his sideman with a smile in face throughout the game....

=D

Damn that was a crazy game, I was real nervous all the way through I knew Barca would have difficulties dealing with set plays around our penalty box and crosses.

Cowardly Chelsea will take full advantage of this on Wednesday.

Now can some kind soul please help a fellow fan by directing me to a link where I can watch the entire game on GOL TV broadcast with Ray Hudson commentary?

PS Henry finishing/composure was brilliant he so elegantly put the first goal in.

Yaya Toure is by far the best Defensive Midfielder I don't appreciate how the sky sports commentators called him a "water carrier" though, that is undermining his talent as he can dribble the ball and pass very well too.

Messi is back nowwww...Glad to see him back and kickin...Xavi is a genius...I just got my Xavi jersey today..i have been wearin it al lday..INiesta was phenomenal..Toure, Pique and Puyol were immense....Henry really has rediscovered his form..Etoo was quiet, but I can't really say anythin against this guy cuz he waas workin his ass off...Dani made some nice runs and passes...Valdes was incredible..the worst performer was Abidal..He got skinned a lotta times, but still i can't really say anythin bad abt anybody today...

i m proud of our team...now, even if we loose against Chelsea, I don't give a fucck...Viva Barca...

all in all that is what we need but realy still it's unblievable for me.

i am congratulation all the players nad manager what they have done.

but realy the night i have remembered
always was 0-3 when eto'o scored first goal and ronaldinho added two times and then real madrid fans standed ovation for ronaldinho.that night i said it's incridable but last night 2-6 i don't
have word describe it.

now celebrate the title.

I was wrong in comment #14, this was the fourth time Madrid have conceded six at home.

1930/31 - Real Madrid 0 Athletic Bilbao 6
1946/47 - Real Madrid 3 Athletic Bilbao 6
1950/51 - Real Madrid 3 Atletico Madrid 6
2008/09 - Real Madrid 2 FC Barcelona 6

As I'm sure you all know Barça's previous best at the Bernabeu was in 1973/74 when we won 0-5

A great performance overall . I'm glad to see Messi back on form . Xavi was unbelievable and definitely the man of the match . Eto'o is still struggling and Abidal by far was the worst . He was easily beaten by Ramos who is NOT the most skillful player for the cross that resulted in Madrid's first goal . Robben ran circles around him almost at every encounter . Abidal maybe holding his own against average opposition but when facing quality wingers like Robben he is poor . He is also worthless offensively . I was pleased with Barça's response to Madrid's dirty tactics . We gave them some of their medicine especially Diarra who was a wild animal kicking at every Barça player he encountered . Hopefully this will send a message to Chelsea and their brand of dirty football . This performance should give us enough confidence and self belief that not only we can draw with Chelsea but beat them as well . One more good game and we are on our way to the CL title and Messi to sweep all the awards followed by Xavi and perhaps Iniesta !!

@neuro11,
We are in agreement but I think FIFA will NOT allow three players , no matter how deserving, to run for the top three honors . I expect a token name from an EPL club(Ronaldo , Gerrard, Torres) to be thrown in there . Both Ronaldo and Torres are having a donkey year so far but that did not stop FIFA from nominating players who were not necessary at their best . One thing for certain : NO one can deny Messi this year . It is Messi time !!

Bit Early to label Pique our next Puyol, however I was very encouraged by his display. Having said that, only 7 days ago against Chelsea I thought his distribution was awful. He needs to show me that he can have composure and passing ability consistently for me to consider him our next Puyol.

Don't get me wrong though, an Astute purchase to get him back here :)

Man, I knew the Blaugrana would crush los merengues. I just knew it. Chelsea did it. Pissed off the boys royally with their 'pragmatic' play.

I'll never understand how this has ended up an advantage for Chelsea. So they play at Stamford Bridge, so what? Barça just trashed RM in their own house. The more telling point though is away goals. For every goal Barça makes, Chelsea will have to score one more now. Where's the logic in that plan of Hiddink's? Got me.

@Pequito nothing ...no advantage at all....chicken hearted hiddink just thought they would be humilated in camp nou...they did not..so they happy and dancing....only advantage they could have is...we lost our two defender for the clash...but other than all equal..Barca boyz never look at where they playing....they only look at where the goal bar is =D

hey FC BARCA fans. the last time i proposed the line up against chelsea, it seems like non of you liked my coaching technique. as die hard fans, i would like to know about your first eleven lineup against Guus and Lamps on Wednesday. still sticking to my team:
Valdes

D.Alves Yaya Toure Pique Abidal

Keita
Xavi Iniesta

Messi Eto'o Henry

I would like to about your ideal 11 please. do you mind justifying any changes please. hope that isn't too much to ask.
thanks.

I'm actually thinking we should look at playing a 3-4-3 formation.

Valdes
D. Alves, Pique, Abidal
Toure (DM), Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta
Messi, Eto'o, Henry.

neuro11
78. neuro11 Wrote: | 06.38CEST | May 4, 2009

i din think yet...but i can mention couple of things in ur team....
@Ozone Abidal looked pretty uncomfortable with the speedy run of winger(like ramos and robben beat him several times yesterday)..so better he could be replaced by sylvinho...

@ FCB_Darren 3-4-3 would be a destructive thinking...when u don have puyol and marquez ....and when it can be expected that chelsea will depend on long ball towards drogba and anelka...

FCB_Darren
79. FCB_Darren Wrote: | 07.24CEST | May 4, 2009

I'm suggesting the 3-4-3, purely because Toure can act as the other defender down back (his DM role should suit him - so in a way, it will still be 4-3-3), and bringing in Busquets can assist with helping counter the Chelsea height and the heading prowess they possess. He will also draw a lot of fouls and can be another ball winner if Xavi gets locked down.

FCB_Darren
80. FCB_Darren Wrote: | 07.25CEST | May 4, 2009

No way IMO should Sylvinho start over Abidal. I'm a firm believer that Abidal is still our best choice at LB.

caleb
81. caleb Wrote: | 08.03CEST | May 4, 2009

Hleb

Alves, Pique, Caceres, Abidal
Xavi, Toure, Iniesta,
Eto'o, Messi, Henry

*justifying my changes:

1. the Hleb selection will throw everyone off. Also, perhaps his inability to score will translate into Chelsea's inability to score.
2. Caceres won't have that much to do, because Pique will take Drogba and the outside backs will have the wings. Caceres' speed will help him give cover to the other players, because that's mostly what he'll do. Toure will be more effective filling the space in front of the back four, because no one else on our team can do that job like he does (I think next best is Busquets, not Kieta...Kieta is usually more attacking). Also Pique can handle Drogba fairly well, so I think pulling back Toure is superfluous. Toure was the important shield against any Essien break outs in the first game.

caleb
82. caleb Wrote: | 08.07CEST | May 4, 2009

3. (sorry, i forgot) I would like to see Messi in the middle again. first game he was completely isolated on the right. against real he was linking up constantly. when he drops a little deeper and receives the ball in the center he seems more dangerous than when Eto'o does the same. I think he's more likely to give us an assist as well. And it worked to perfection against Real.

so, mostly my thoughts are it's better to stick with what worked the best, even if we have to patch it with Caceras (and Hleb for the mind game factor).

Ozone
83. Ozone Wrote: | 08.40CEST | May 4, 2009

to FCB_Darren:

d.alves in the 3 man defence will leave a big hole in the defence. he practically plays more as a right winger than a right back. toure is always there to cover him when he goes upfront. have you guys not seen when dani looses the ball and toure is somewhere on the left side; team penetrate very quickly because of the huge space he leaves. that was how betis disturbed us. we were lucky malouda is no speedometer like kaka, c-ronaldo or ribery. don't forget that in a group, the strongest link is even more than the weakest link especially if they fail to deliver. the good thing is big boy Yaya is so good at his job. damn ; barca haven't had a good defensive midfieder in the ranks of makelele, roy keane, patrick veira or davids (holland, ajax, fc barca) in a while. my problem with Caceres at center back is his size, height and confidence with the ball. he has very accurate tackles but he has to challenge drogba and anelka/kalou if pique fails to anti-chelsea's attack.
peace out!!

FCB_Darren
84. FCB_Darren Wrote: | 08.49CEST | May 4, 2009

Either way boys, I'd be happy with a 4-3-3 with Caceres or see if Pep decides a 3-4-3 (or similar).

I'm backing us in 100% to get a killer goal early and make Chelsea play, which will in turn open them up more for a killer 2nd goal.

If the latest news on gol.com is to be believed , Henry will be out for two weeks after sustaining a knee injury against Madrid . That could change things around a bit .
I suggest a 4-4-2 formation :
Alves Pique Caceres Abidal

Xavi Yaya Keita Iniesta

Messi Eto'o
I think this can be a very fluid formation since Alves and Iniesta will automatically push forward and Yaya will drop back and help defensively especially on the right . So it can easily turn into 3-3-4 or even 3-5-2 !!

From what I can see on the Spanish newspaper Marca.com it says Henry has not travelled, although I can not speak a word of Spanish =D

On this form he is on fire and at worst him as a sub would be a great option. I hope he goes to London even if he is injured if only to keep Hiddink unsure of what formation to play.

But what a match, incredible stuff. Pique was superb and Xavi well he is just the best creative midfielder in the world.

Hello guys. yeeehaaaah....its great to see Barsa beat the hell out off Real. However, the season is not over yet. With so much quality in our team, i hope we could win the CL. The way i see it, we need to conquer the midfield. We need to deploy Messi in a free role instead of just5 a winger. Just one factor worries me when i watched the Classico. The fact that Caceras did not participate. I'm wondering who would fill in that vacant role in the center of our defence next to PIQUE...if it is going to be Caseras...i felt that he would have done great with atleast 20 minutes of time during the Classico. I really hope Barsa could win against Chelsea. I'm still worried about that vacant role in defence. I'm afraid that whoever playing in that role that night might not be totally ready to face Chelsea.
