Spain 1 Germany 0

Sunday, 29 June 08, 10:53 PM · Comments (18)

A goal after 33minutes from Fernando Torres was enough to give Spain a thoroughly deserved victory in tonight's Euro 2008 final. A great through pass from Barça's Xavi Hernandez gave Torres the chance to show his speed as he outpaced Phillip Lahm to nick the ball skillfully over the advancing Jens Lehmann. It was fitting that Xavi and Torres should combine for the goal as they were the two best players on the pitch tonight.

Torres was a constant threat and he nearly put Spain ahead when he headed sergio Ramos's cross onto the base of the post after 22 minutes. Germany only really threatened in the first ten minutes but once Spain settled in their class began to show. In the second half Spain almost equalled the performance against Russia in the semi final and rarely looked threatened. Ramos, Iniesta and Senna all came close to adding a second but in the end the Torres goal was enough to win it.

Spain can clearly be credited with being the best team of the tournament with a balance of 11 goals for and only 3 against. The football they played in the second half against Russia was reminiscent of Barça's best football under Frank Rijkaard and it was great to see Xavi, Iniesta and Puyol all performing well for the national team. My only concern now will be sleeping tonight as the streets of Barcelona are pretty damn noisy at the moment. Oh well, I think I'd be better off going back out to the street to soak up the atmosphere.

The monkey is off their backs! Making this victory even better is the fact that ABC provided full coverage of the event in the US, which was preceded by a thorough spanking of David Beckham and his ragtag band by DC United.

Did anyone else get a kick from seeing Cesc being subbed off while Xavi and Iniesta played on?

Enjoy the party, Nic!

I was so glad to see Spain win! They deserved it and I would have gone nuts if Germany snuck past them right at the end or even equalized. Xavi, Iniesta, and Puyol were very impressive throughout the tournament.

Btw, who is that on Sergio Ramos's shirt?

Andrew, the pic is that of Antonio Puerta, his team mate from Sevilla, who passed away last year. It was a good gesture...

Finally, after years of wait, Spain finally won!!! The entire team played amazing......

Highlights posted here (with German commentary): www.footytube.com

I don't know if any of you already visit this site, but I only recently came across it. I highly recommend it as a source of highlights/goal videos for recently played games.

unbelievable!!!
What a football story!
I wonder when will Raul make Marca's front page again.
This is absolutely fantastic. All credit should go to Aragones for being a man of principle and fiber. Faith in your players is such an important part of coaching and if anyone is interested in coaching their way to the top, well here's a great example of how to create positive insidious pressure. This is great. I think I will stop right here and go enjoy the party. Our Blaugrana boys did well (Xavi and Andres) but I am worried about Lahm's side and strength on the ball. Nic, enjoy the party!!!!

Congratulations to Spain -- especially Puyol, Xavi, and Iniesta -- for a much deserved victory. It was so satisfying to see the stylish, open, positive attacking side finally lift the trophy over the negative, defensive, pragmatic tactics that usually seem to be rewarded. Today was a victory for all the lovers of the beautiful game!

Nic- if you get a chance, I'd love to hear how the national side was followed and how the title was celebrated in places like Barcelona and Bilbao where separatist sentiments have historically seemed to keep the national side at arm's length. Has any of that changed with La Seleccion's successful and highly entertaining run through this tournament?

Jeff - I don't know about Bilbao but in Barcelona there were big celebrations. you have to remember there are many different types living here: there are the Spanish who are not Catalan, Catalans who are nationalists and want nothing to do with Spain, and Catalans who have no problem celebrating Spain's victory

Speeka- I also thought it was one of the best tournaments ever.

Taras - Happy birthday mate.

And thanks to you all who wished me a good party, unfortunately I didn't stay out long and then I was kept awake by the noise from the street.
