Eto'o scores Barça's second

Barça won their first league game of the season with a comfortable 1-6 win tonight in Gijon. Sporting were only briefly in the game after pulling a goal back early in the second half but their hopes were dashed by the sending off of Gerard in the 56th minute. Two late goals from Leo Messi gave the scoreline an embarrassing appearance for the home team.

Pep Guardiola chose Andres Iniesta to play on the left side of attack and the choice paid off as Iniesta capped a fine display with a goal and two assists. The big surprise in team selection was the return of Sergio Busquets to the defensive midfield role and the youngster had another good game, suggesting we may see a fair bit more of him this season. Eric Abidal was back at left back while Carles Puyol was partnered in the centre of defence by Rafa Marquez. The other tactical point of note was that Leo Messi played the entire game as the central striker with Samuel Eto'o, and later Bojan, on the right wing.

Barça dominated from the beginning with Xavi forcing the first save after just two minutes. Messi then had a couple of attempts before Iniesta came close with a shot deflected just over. Barça won eight corners in the first 25 minutes but when the goal came it was from open play: Busquets found Iniesta on the left who ran at his defender before crossing neatly for Xavi to head home. Barça continued to win corners and with the eleventh of the game in the 33rd minute Xavi's cross was headed goalwards by Puyol and Eto'o was on the line to get the final touch.

Early in the second half Messi got away on the right before cutting in past three defenders only to see his shot deflected wide. From the resultant corner Xavi's cross was headed past his own keeper by the unfortunate Jorge for Barça's third. Sporting hit straight back when Marquez allowed Bilic space and he knocked the ball forward for Maldeondo to fire past Valdés.

Barça were briefly rattled but in the 56th minute a poor kick from the Sporting goalie went straight to Messi who headed directly for goal, the last defender, Gerard, brought Messi down and was shown the red card.

Sporting's hopes ended here, they held on for a while but in the 70th minute Bojan, who was on for Eto'o, passed inside to Messi who turned 360º before sending a great ball into the area for Iniesta who beat the offside before flicking the ball past the keeper. Messi finished the job with two late goals. In the 85th minute Gudjohnsen sent Iniesta away on the left and his cross was volleyed in by Messi from close range. Then in the 89th minute Bojan set up Xavi to cross from the right and Messi finished with a rare heade goal.

We shouldn't get overexcited by this result as Sporting are clearly going to struggle this season. However, it was nice to see the goals go in after just one league goal from the first two games. Iniesta and Xavi both had very good games, and Busquets continues to surprise everyone. It's also great to see us scoring from corners as it was such a rare occurence in recent years. Can anyone believe we have scored from three corners in a week? A word of praise should go to the Sporting fans who were superb from start to finish: an example to football fans everywhere.

Barça: Valdés 6.5, Alves 6, Marquez 6, Puyol 6.5, Abidal 6.5; Xavi 8, Busquets 7 (Caceres m81, 6), Keita 6 (Gudjohnsen m70, 6); Eto'o 6 (Bojan m67, 6), Messi 7, Iniesta 8.

Goals: m27 Xavi 0-1, m33 Eto'o 0-2, m49 Jorge (o.g.) 0-3, m50 Maldeondo 1-3, m70 Iniesta 1-4, m85 Messi 1-5, m89 Messi 1-6.

No Barça players were booked.

Did Toure have a sore throat too?

We're going to lose him to Arsenal.

Busquets played surprisingly well, glad to see that. Him and Toure hopefully cover the DM position for years to come. Great scoreline, yeah, hopefully the fireworks in front of oppositions goal continue.

despite his performances on the wings last year, eto'o had a very good game. Although he didnt have many shots on goal, he did seem very composed and knew what he was doing.

Abidal displayed a commendable defensive performance too. I am starting to notice a trend here.........bench them for a game and they come back stronger and hungrier.

Guardiola is a genius. Putting messi in the middle totally confused the defence. Also what a brilliant way to counter the "bus parking" strategy. Often times it is difficult to penetrate a well packed defence from the wings.

I think we should not look too deep into guardiola not using toure today. He is being saved for the midweek game three days later. Thats why eto'o was subbed off early too.

Iniesta dribbling in front of the defender before setting up messi and xavi was like a lion tamer dangling a piece of meat in front of a hungry lion and then snatching it right away to show whos the boss. Amazing performance. He is great in the centre, even greater on the left

What confused me was that Keita was used as an attacker whereas Busquet stayed in front of the defence. Is Busquet supposed to fullfill the same pivot/play-maker role that guardiola did during his time in Barcelona?

sorry but i just gats to look deep into guardiola not using toure....he has been saving him since???? i dont know what his plans are but i just feel he should give him a chance soon and i hope toure dosent get upset quickly...busquets is good but i noticed some weaknesses though he's unlikely to be used in the tougher games,

it was good to see carceres n bojan comin on by the way

Great result today. Playing sporting is just what we needed to get the kickstart to the season.

Guardiola may already have his critics, but I applaud him for giving players chances (such as pedro, busquets). Such gametime will only strengthen the club for the future as well as hopefully making the really good prospects want to stay instead of being poached by the EPL sides.

The only player I would like to see more of is Bojan.

Henry I fear, the honeymoon is over. He is serviceable - but at best he is just that. Sadly I don't think he will ever fit in here & recapture his true deadly abilities - such is life.

oh my god...wow..waht a game...tremendous performance by the blaugranas..I m proud of this team....Iniesta was the man of the match no doubt..He was a constant threat thruout...Messi was phenomenal...and Xavi once again reaffirmed he is the best center mid in the world...Let's relish this special win guys...

and nic...I don't agree with ur ratin on Iniesta and Messi...Iniesta definitely desrved a 9 and Messi def. deserved 8 or 8.5...

*Ineasta should always play left forward . no one plays as good as him in this position

*pyoal need to show a better performance as a captain , i think he showed a great passion to go forward but at the sometime he failed in some occasions defensively .

*busquets what a great performance , i am sure he still has a lot to show for the team

*messi : I just feel he got mature in the summer , he is more responsible toward the team and he was the source of magic .. he truly deserves the number 10 shirt , messi and inesta were the best tonight no doubt

* I just hoped we finished with a clean sheet but it could be a sign of weakness that we need to maintain before we meet a stronger opponent

*All the credit for Pep and his men , seems that pep finally found the best 11

well playing in the youth team under guardiola, busquet does have a better understanding of pep's tactics and strategies.

Besides we faced sporting gijon. It was a better idea to rest toure for the game against betis cause they can certainly be a handful in comparison to gijon.

i dont know why but im not feeling as good as ur suppose to after winning 6-1. first half was really not good at all, and after 20 minutes i wanted to turn the tv off, looked like the same old mess. but it improved and there were points in the second half we looked pretty good, but for the most part the actual performance minute by minute was not overly convincing, despite the two final goals really being sheer quality. nice seeing us take advantage of deadball situations too, such a rareity! it could be though that gijon were just poor and the boys didn’t feel like going all out all 90 minutes, which i guess is natural. messi for one despite his amazing touches and passes, had overall a lazy game and was often too greedy and made a few really lazy passes. lets hope he was just uninspired by the opposition. gijon were very dirty as well, i gained quite a dislike for them after this game.

i feel like a spoiled fan a bit complaining, but there were definitely things i was not happy about. 1st and foremost i was upset with etoo being placed on the wing and then bojan when naturally they should have been in the middle and messi wide. etoo was useless on the wing despite his workrate and besides his one very elegant touch to set up the last goal, bojan does not suit wing play either. that tactically i thought was not right. i know that switching them during the game a few times can be effective but etoo permanently on the wing just wont work regularly. 2nd, im not convinced by keita and i wont accept any argument about him being more attacking minded, etc. i saw him do nothing tonight yaya could not do easily or do better. if this keeps up yaya will be an arsenal player next summer, count on that. also, keita pisses me off claiming that goal tonight when he got NO where near it, he tried the same thing last week, thats honestly disgraceful, really annoyed me. alves needs to be more effective with the ball and not make such silly passes.

on the good side, abidal had his best game in months and months. he looked half decent, and also looks like a nice guy, seems to joke with players and i like to see that. iniesta had a great great game, so did my main man xavi. marquez looks refocused and back to being a dependable defender.

no matter what (including my critiques), this game gives the team some breathing room and a few days with the media off their back and i hope the players take great confidence in the win. i enjoyed seeing the boys laughing and smiling when they scored. i also liked guardiola getting upset on the touchline when the team were not trying to kill the game off after the red card. 9 goals in two games has to be a good sign, so lets hope momentum carries, but really i want to see us properly tested against a villarreal, valencia, or at madrid.

it's a lopsided result, but this is exactly the kind of victory we needed considering the circumstances... let's face it, Gijon is a lower tier team which was cut down to 10 men. i think 6-1 is appropriate.

I have to say Iniesta was awesome today... I love how versatile he is, I'm convinced he can play almost any position, other than defender. Didn't he fill in as striker during a CL match last year?

Sporting supporters were awesome, the were cheering on their team even 1-6. I think the Barca fans should learn to get behind their team when they are not playing well instead of booing and the white hanky stuff.

Great game. It's good to see us finally scoring goals, and so many at that. this is just what Barca needed to build up confidence and hopefully it continues for weeks to come.

I'm also glad to see that we were taking advantage of dead ball situations. can you believe it we score 5 out of the 6 goals from corners. indeed a rarerity.

Iniesta was wonderful to watch running rings around the Sporting players... Also Abidal did not have a bad game. I think he had a very good game and this should give him motivation and confidence to play even better. he must just not slack off!

The Sporting fans are absolutely amazing, they cheered and partied throughout the whole match even though they were being thrashed. Barca's boo boys can defenitely learn a few things about supporting from the Sporting fans.

Glad to see Cacares finally making his debut. Busquets is definately one for the future...

barca fans and sporting fans cant be compared, barca fans can be compared to madrid fans though....fans of a small club are happy they r in the first division, its like winning the league for them, so they dont have high expectations...but barca/madrid and all those big clubs, the fans expect so much more, if u dont win the league, then the fans turn against u.(liverpool fans r the only exception).....sporting fans know that they wont win the champions league or the league...and if they end up 17th place at the end of the league, thats good enough for them because last year they were in the 2nd division!

lol tell me about it.

Even after a 6 goal thrashing in an away fixture ( did barca ever score more than 4 in an away fixture last year? did they even score four?) still not an ounce of satisfaction...

You guys make it sound like Barcelona should score 10 goals each game...

I say we relax. Pep hasnt been in charge of the team for years. This is only the tip of the iceberg. Have some patience and let the new fellow settle in completely. He is already doing quite well in such a short time.

Trust me when I say this, we will all marvel in Barca's brilliance as the season unravels.

:D :D I'm so happy to see that Guardiola changed his tactics, and played with a different formation.!!! That shows good coaching skills. Last year Frank was short on tactical ideas that would help us create more scoring chances. By the way I was unable to watch the game live becuase I have Dish Network and they have terminated their contract with GolTV. Does anyone know of a website where I can stream Barca's games?

about eto'o on d wing, i believe a change in tactics dosent hurt once in a while especially when it achieves a VERY GOOD result..try to see the bright side

so messi has recently said:

I believe the argie maestro is trying to tell us something here

Hey Blaugrana boy...there's nothing missing missing, we are just still "forming"...don't worry the extra humpf will come. This was a good win considering. My dream now is to see Sporting upset Real Madrid win a win or draw on Wednesday. That will bring them down to earth a little bit.
