Another week goes by and still no movement in the transfer market. The local press continues to add names to the growing list of possible signings, but it really is very difficult to read between the lines to see which of the names are the most likely to come. It seems we are looking to add five players to the squad: a left back, a centre back, a defensive midfielder, a wide attacker and a centre forward.
One of the players who may sign in the next week or so is Deportivo's Brazilian left back, Filipe Luis. It also seems likely that the other left back option, Zhirkov will finally move to Chelsea. The centre back could be Shakhtar Donetsk's Dmytro Chygrynskiy, while Barça may decide to keep Henrique out on loan for another season.
I'm not quite sure why we need to sign a defensive midfielder as we have Toure Yaya, Busquets and Keita to cover here. However, there has been quite a lot of talk about Javier Mascherano, perhaps it is just a precaution in case Toure doesn't sign his new contract. On the subject of signing new contracts it seems that Victor Valdés has still not signed despite the reports last Friday that the agreement had been made.
Franck Ribery is still in the running to join the club but his options seem to be dropping as Barça consider other possibilities such as Robinho and Ashley Young. I think Young is an excellent young player with potential, but whether we want to risk €30 milllion on him I'm not so sure. Robinho has plenty of talent but I'm not quite sure if he would fit in at Barça with Guardiola's strict regime.
Of the strikers it is looking more and more likely that it could finally be David Villa who comes, but Villa and the other candidates Ibrahimovic and Forlan are all expensive. Who knows, it may turn out like last summer and Eto'o stays and we sign nobody. Whatever the case I'd rather we were talking about David Villa than Emmanuel Adebayor who was linked with a move to Barça last summer.
I hope there is some movement soon, most of all to be able to write about them on this blog. I'm afraid I haven't got into the Confederates Cup yet, I think I just want to maintain the Champions League final in my memory, and any other football I see from now on will always be inferior to what we saw in Rome and over the last season. However, I may decide to watch Spain and United States later today and hopefully we can see a Brazil-Spain final at the weekend.

I think villa would be the best option even though he is expensive
oops..! why not Zhirkov ? read smewhere that he prefers barca than chelsea..!! is the fee too high? he is a decent player , i think..!!
Barça is waiting til the conditions in the marked got down but the prob is that we need to get our own share from the school of good players.
What made me worried is that many players have turned their faces off Barça such as Ribery, Villa, ....... I agree with La po about not spending much money like Madrid but we stil have to ensure that we'll get some good players .We need to get Zirkove ...
we still patient !!!! but we need some fresh blood in our team .
Visca Barça Itri
Xavi Torres has moved to Malaga. I most admit it will really be hard to promote youngstars this time around, there is just too much expectation from the team to experiment, and a lot of them are already about 23 years old. I wish we could have twe teams. Its just hard to watch them go to other clubs, but its for their own good though. Hope we signed one of those funny you-will-not-play-against-Barca and we-can-still-buy-you-back terms.
I have posted a few weeks ago that NONE of the players who were heavily linked to join the club will do so .
I'm sure that players like Villa , Ibrahimovic, Ribery , Benzema , Zhirkov , Aguero ....etc. will either stay at their present clubs OR go to other clubs not Barça !!
Wow! US beat Spain 2-0. Spain's first defeat in over two years. Congrats to the US, very impressive, especially in defence.
Spain dominated but the US had two shots at goal and scored . Iniesta's absence is a big factor . Xavi was doing it all alone . He got little or no help from the other midfielders or attackers .
A little dose of humility was good for Spain. Although, I felt bad for Xavi, Puyol,, Pique and Busquets, I especially enjoyed this one. I can absolutely see myself getting a little more respect from immigration officers next time I hand my passport to one of them at Madrid Barajas.
This is goes to show that futbol has no home...good for you YANKS!!!
Iniesta absense is not a factor at all. Spain din hav lack of taents. To be honest US was efficient on scoring. What pity about spain is they truly din deserve the win today. US defended well i hav to say; specially when they are such a small team what we can expect from them other than defending after the first goal. But still spain should have managed breaking the deadlock.
Barca the club with biggest media impact while messi tops individual players impact

Interesting game for Spain.
For me the tactics was wrong. No way is Spain going to score from crosses, the American defense was too deep and they had tall and strong DC's.
Torres played crap, really Spain should of taken off Torres and overloaded the midfeild. Xavi was isolated as Cesc was pushed up too high. When the two did combine they looked good.
One off freak result and too many bad performances, they will kick ass in the WCup anyway, so untill then...
hey niece a question for u!!!
any news on a move of andres guardado???
i think man u. and lioverpool are tryin to buy him for 36 mil.
any news??
Ramos was baddddd jejejejeje
I felt sorry for Xavi and the rst of Barça plaeyrs
Concerned over recent little activity. We don't need to sign too many players or big names, but WE do need to make some moves to add quality in certain positions, and to prepare for the dreaded WC season up ahead. We also need to ensure we stay ahead of Madrid.
I got news for all of you...IT WILL NOT GET ANY EASIER NEXT YEAR!!!
We better get some new players in this transfer window. I am glad we're letting the Real Madrid's of this world make the mistakes but we need to bring some defenders and a forward...that is all we need.
We need cover for Abidal, Alves, Puyol, and Eto'o...I think that Busquets will be fine during Yaya's absence. I hate the idea of spending millions for just to make sure that we afre covered for 2 or 3 games. The lad is young, healthy and he sure holds his own. We already have Yaya, Keita and Busquets for that spot, so there's no need to spend money on Mascherano or anybody else.
I think, I have softened my position on Eto'o a little bit but I still hope that he stays until he retires. I am sure that he will bag another 30 next year but we need a big man during his absence for the African cup.
It looks like Real Madrid just wasted some more money on Raul Albiol. A good defender but he is not top tier quality IMO. I would have been better for them to go for Marchena...there again Valencia will not part with their captain.
It looks as though Luis Enrique is also really helping our case with Villa since he is a role model to him and Villa values his advice.Enrique has strongly urged him to join the Blaugrana. I am, especially encouraged with this but still reserved on his ability to stay onside and to pressure defenses like Eto'o can. His defensive ability is what worries me...that's all.
On useless Gossip news, looks like our "national miss Paris Hilton" found CR7 or CR9 a bit feminine, which I found hilarious...I wonder what Florentino Perez thought of that considering that he plans on amortizing the high transfer fee with jersey sales of the player. How many sales were lost because the boy "puts little stars on his skin and in his hair"...I guess Guti has a little friend now...I thought this was funny!!!
lol. funny about CR diatus, i enjoyed that.
anyhow, i havent weight into the transfer market debate yet. firstly because i think in general its mostly speculation and arguing back and forth is useless because most talk never happens, but also because i find some of the opinions of people blutly idiotic, and i didnt feel like arguing them. not too much at this site, but at another. u ask people who they want to sign and lists look like "zlatan, silva, ribery, mascherano, zirhov, benzema". all in one. frankly if u honestly think that sort of signing is good, plz take a trip a few hundrerd kms south and support madrid. that isnt how barca works. signing like that is stupid, reckless, has no thought process behind it. people need to start realizing these are HUMAN BEINGS. not players on championship manager. so yeah, ive said my piece on that.
but some people here have it right, we need a few signing in a few positions, thats it. the core of this team is extremely strong and there is no need to upset this balance. and also, i find it so spoilt that people want to buy great players to be made as substitutes or rotate. its such a waste having a great player on the bench just in case the slightly greater player is injured. thats a chelsea way of being, and it disgusts me.
which brings me to these stupid rumors of signing mascherano. these have to be the dumbest ive heard in ages. we have yaya toure, who i will defend tooth and nail as being the best pure defensive midfielder on earth. they are about the same age, and yaya is not only stronger, taller, and faster, he has better technique and reads the game better. he is just a better player, plus he knows the club. there is ZERO need to get masch, especially with a very promising busquets coming up. stupid stupid rumors.
we do need a left back, no doubt, id want maxwell, because i think he proved himself in inter before jose came, and zirhov just wants too much cash and isnt worth it.
the only area of signing that does puzzle me and i havent decided yet is concerning villa. i rate him very very highly and would def feel it was a bit of a waste not getting him. saying that, i dont think its too necessary with etoo there, and as a footballing decision its prob better to only have one of them. like ive said many times before, barca has room for only ONE true striker. u cant rotate etoo and villa, trust me, that will be pear shape in a few months. two wordclass strikers cannto be substitutes for one another. and shifting on on the left flank would just be a waste i think.
if we keep etoo then i think bringing in llorente could be an idea. i was never a huge fan of him, but lately have noticed his game a bit more. its undeniable the extra dimension he brings with his size, and he actually is quite mobile, fast and works very hard. if we can get him for a good price and he is willing to be a sub mainly, would be a clever rumor.
alright, thats enough transfer garbage for me for a while. just gonna sit back and see what happens. whatever laporta and pep decided, ill back it, because neither have lead as astray yet.
@ Titi186 :
" Torres played crap, really Spain should of taken off Torres and overloaded the midfeild. "
I always thought that Torres is way overrated . He is an occasional " poacher " with minimal ball skills to speak of .
To rank him among the best strikers in the world is quiet laughable .
He is being hyped up so much in the English media theses days almost as much as Ronaldo .
Speaking of Ronaldo . I'm curious to see how Manchester United fans would view him now : as the best player in the world ( allegedly ) or as a traitor and a diving cheat ?
Stay tuned !!
atlast some positive rumour for barca.lol....seems like there is high possibility of villa to join barca....(though its difficut to believe those newspapers.)it would b great news if true.
I would kill to have Booth on our team...man he is imoressive. He is the centerback for South Africa. He is big, strong, reads the game well and a beast...I like this guy!!!
impressive!!!!!
really tot spain played like barca their style is more premiership-like, i believe they can only succeed using one f those strikers just like when vila injured in the euros... xavi is not in control of the pace, riera decides to run when he wants and fabregas tries impossible balls all this without xavi's permission....they should beg aragones to come back
I agree with blaugranaboy 150%. But i guess these people who wants us to sign everyone in the market are young culés, maybe liking the team from january this year, when they stopped liking man utd or madrid itself. Globalization in football is good, but also brings this people who have no idea about what our team is really about. But it's something we can live with.
I do, however, kind of justify the supposed interest in mascherano. 2/3 of our defensive midfielders will be off for 2 months in the winter so we should cover that position. We have had problems in the past with the african tournament. I don't really see mascherano being the best option (since he's too brutal and we can't allow that, madrid would, but not us) but it's just another option i guess.
I have the feeling that ribery is flirting with us and madrid, and i don't like that. If he is a player that does that, then please madrid take him. I refuse my team to spend more than 50m euros in a player that doesn't know the difference betweeen madrid and Barça.
He wasn't impressive against us either, so.. in that case, if robinho really really wants to join us, i'd consider him.. he could be very dangerous wishing some sort of revenge.
thanks for the support MI. unfortunately there are many ppl that dont really get the club or understand football for that matter.
the african cup of nations does pose a bit of shit with yaya and keita, but it doesnt justify signing someone like mascherano, the captain of the argentinian national team, huge player for his club, just to cover for 2 months. the club needs to assure yaya that he is the number one in that spot, without any doubts, as he should be. if they are worried with only busquets, then sign someone for a few months, like an oldie like we did with albertini. otherwise, pique can play def mid, he did it at youth level and his passing ability is unquestionable. but u cannot make a huge money signing like masch.
diatus: dude, dont get too fooled by booth. being here in SA, i remember he was in the team about 6 yrs ago, did poorly then left to russia. he has matured a lot in the last year, and i cannot deny the incredible few games he had had, but he is already 32 years old and just isnt barca quality. its just like onyewu and demerit. if u watched usa vs spain u could think they are some top top defenders. but onyewu was a disaster at newcastle and anyone else from the US is plain average, but if u just saw that one good performance you could think different. but maybe onyewu is developing, ill keep my judgement on him a bit longer.
ur still so keen for a CB, lol, cracks me up.
I was at the stadium last night to watch Brasil vs South Africa. Being a Cule and South African it was mixed emotions at the end. Got to witness a Dani Alves freekick that not only hit target but went in, hoping for more of that at Barca next season.
Great to see some world class players up close and LIVE. Magical!
@ Greengingers ;
It is great to be there and watch the game live BUT how did you put up with all that noise ?
I just don't see the entertainment side of being constantly bombarded with that ear deafening noise .
About Alves:
I never thought he was a good free kick taker at all . He scored a couple of times ( not sure how many ) but they were all deflections including the goal yesterday !!
Sorry about the typo !
Hey guys, I'm feeling your enthusiasm, and your opinions as well. Nice blog.
Know that you can all get tickets for games next season through barcelona-home.com, well, those of you who will be here that is. Seriously, check it out..
@Blaugranaboy
On BOOTH:
Yeah, that is why I am excited about it...I remember him not being so good but he seems to have seen the light. He has had some monster games for SA henceforth my enthusiasm. You are right about his age and I agree it gives me a bit of pause because 32 is just not young in football but do not compare hm to anyone on the US defense, not even BOCANEGRA on his best day. But, when it is all said and done, I would actually withdraw that comment...in other words you might be right...refreshing right? ha ha...
ON CENTERBACK:
Dude, stoopppp pushing my buttons (lol)...
I say buy defenders because we have plenty of goal upfront. We always find the back of our opponents' net but we NEED cover for Puyol, Pique, Alves, Abidal. HEnrique (with an H) is back but we need more. I NEVER wanna see Toure asked to play centerback again, I never wanna see Pep in a dilemma trying to decide between Keita and Sylvinho for left back...We need good covers and that's all I want. I do not care who we bring in upfront because we always find a way to score.
@MI
You are right that Barcelona is different in its approach to football and that globalisation has been good to the club but mere geographic location and/or years as a supporter of the club doesn't make you an expert on anything.Football has changed a lot over the past few decades and it is obvious that the club has changed in its approach to the game per say. FCB's transfer market philosophy has remained the same (buy cheap or create stars in house then sell high). So, when people opine on this forum, we try to respect everyone's understanding of the game and not try to belittle anyone by painting them as "new fans" or "lacking in understanding of catalan culture" (not that you did) but I am simply saying your point will carry more evidenciary weight in your favor if you just stick to the facts and refrain from using generalization that say more about your model of the world than theirs.
The reason we want another DM is because we're losing Yaya and Keita for a month to the African Cup of Nations.
That amount of time can make or break a season if we aren't in great form.
And I don't know why there's all this pessimism about Villa and people not wanting to play for Barca. Yes Ribery said he preferred Madrid, but Villa has said nothing of the sort. In fact, Spanish papers are reported we're actually putting up a legitimate amount for Villa. Perhaps at the cost of giving up Bojan for a season (which I know he'd hate), but it's still a great move, especially with Eto'o uncertainty.
We'll sign Filipe Luis on Sunday, we just re-negotiation Yaya's contract, and I seriously believe we'll sign Villa over the next two weeks. That's a great transfer season alone.
I still want Mascherano.
Its official!!
Yaya has just signed a new contract.
Thats the best bit of news I've heard since the season ended, the board would of been fools to let him go, he is WAY better than Mascherano.
Anybody hear the talk of Kerrison or has anybody seen this guy and what is he like?
THE YAYA. So glad txiki got that finalized.
Kerrison is a brazilian striker who plays for Palmeiras. He's got a load of potential, but I'm pretty sure the main reason we're so interested is because of the prospective signing of David Villa.
If we sign Kerrison, we will most likely include him in the deal for Villa in a swift buy/swift sell sort of deal. I'd rather do that than lose Bojan. He needs the tutelage of Pep.
Here's a link of Kerrison highlights.

diatus: i mean im not really trying to be right in this case, just didnt know if u were so familiar with booth's career, i mean he isnt in the typical fan's knowledge, so im impressed. i cant deny he hasnt been great, but i think in these small touraments, when players that arent seen so often have good games, they get so overrated. prime example is the senegal team of 2002. nobody had ever seen them, and then in a few good matches they were labelled the next best thing. all a bunch of flops and average players when they moved to europe.
im really not trying to push your buttons on the CB thing, frankly, i cant remember disagreeing about anything beside that. i really think that a CB is the absolute last thing we need. if milito comes back fit, which is possible seeing ive never seen another player given over 1.5 yrs to recover, then i see pique, puyuol, marquez, milito, henrique, and caceres being more than enough cover. considering munieza may be in the picture too, i think we are doing ok. there arent many teams out there with such an array of recognizable centerbacks. on the flanks ill back up 100% that we need cover. def for the left, which seems filipe is likely, and i think it would be useful for the right too.
anyhow, on YAYA, best news since the CL final. im so glad he has signed and really i didnt see it happen any different, laporta and guardiola are far from stupid, and they just proved it once again. hopefully all the silly masch rumors die.
i think a real big transfer for us now rests on ETOO. if he stays, i think we may bring in a smaller name forward, maybe a young prospect or llorente. but if he goes, im so sure we bring in david villa. so any big transfer for us now hinges on etoo's decision.
time to just sit back again and wait. but we have already made our best "signing" of the summer, YAYA TOURE
from the Kerrison's highlight posted by JMoFCB it seems the lad is aa very good penalty kick taker...lol. I really don know much abt him but the video is not quite impressive. His team confirms today barca bid.
I think barca should get rid of gudjohnsen, he's a waste of space nd get some cover for abidal and a temporary midfielder bcuz of the absence of keita and toure next year during the african nations cup.
The fact that some of the key existing players' contracts (Valdes,Eto'o and even Toure for a while) are still not finalized means that things aren't so good off the pitch for Barca as they were on the pitch during the past season.
The Eto'o situation is really embarassing. I mean if he was not part of next season's plans he should have been told so and efforts to find a replacement (by no means an easy task) should have kicked off and wrapped up rather than the current state of limbo where we don't know who'll be our centre-forward next season.
As for Valdes, until I read Nic's blog, I thought his contract was finalized but now I come to know that the never-ending contract negotiations saga is still going on.Perhaps the only redeeming factor is that none of the big clubs want him and Man City aren't looking for a keeper either...
I know we need to strengthen areas like LB,back-up RB, LWM/LF and a back-up striker but its ridiculous that we have unsettled a treble-winning squad's CF and GK (and perhaps even Toure) by not finishing up contract renewal talks almost a month after the season has ended.
