In football today it seems increasingly difficult for one team to dominate Europe for very long. No team has won back-to-back European Cups since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990, while in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s it was quite common for one team to do this (Real Madrid 1956-1960, Benfica 61&62, Inter 64&65, Ajax 71-73, Bayern Munich 74-76, Liverpool 77&78, Nottingham Forest 79&80). Interestingly this has coincided with the new format of the Champions League and perhaps more importantly with the post Bosman-ruling era and the age of the millionaire footballer.
In modern football there seem to be a few basic ingredients to achieving success. Obviously you need to have talented players, but as we have seen with Madrid's 'galacticos' and Barça's 'fantasticos' it is not as easy as simply buying up the best players. In football it is also vital to have a high level of motivation, hunger and desire, confidence is also essencial, as is unity. When Barça were at there best in 2004 and 2005 these ingredients were all there, but as has happened at other teams it seems to be practically impossible to maintain them.
To understand why, we need to try and understand the modern footballer. Of course there are many different types of player but it seems that it is often more difficult for the foreign stars to stay focused on football. Once they have earned a few million the hunger can disappear. At Barça in recent years we have seen many Brazilians come and go, they usually seem to start brilliantly before fading out the longer they stay here. There have been suggestions that some of these players get distracted by the night life in Barcelona and this eventually affects their game.
It is probably true. If we take the case of Ronaldinho, he claims he behaves no differently now than when he arrived at Barça. No-one can blame him for being tempted by the girls and the parties, afterall you only live once and as a goofy teenager Ronnie probably had girls laughing at him more than anything else. How great it must feel when you achieve a bit of success and suddenly you have top models falling over each other to get near you. At first this makes no difference to your game but as time goes by and you don't look after yourself so well you begin to lose that explosive speed you once had, you realise you can't walk past opponents so easily and then your confidence starts to suffer. It can happen so easily to any of the top players and it is almost impossible to get back to the top unless you are very strong mentally and you are able to change your lifestyle completely, which sadly is not so easy to do.
It would be great if all players had a steady relationship and a good family life with parents who advised them well, etc. Unfortunately, it is more complicated for players who come from abroad. It is not just the Brazilians of course, we all know the case of Maradona while other talented youngsters like Patrick Kluivert found they couldn't combine the lifestyle with a career at the top for very long.
So, what can a club like Barça do about it? Well they need to learn from their mistakes. I do not agree that it is a matter of having a stricter coach. Frank Rijkaard has always treated the players like adults and allowed them freedom in the personal lives. For three years the team played some fantastic football with Rijkaard, the problem is he didn't know how to react to the players who began to abuse their freedom, he has also made the mistake of showing too much loyalty to the players who brought the earlier success. Rijkaard should make way for someone else now but more importantly the players who have lost their hunger for success should also go. In the future Barça should resist the temptation to offer long contracts to the foreign stars, unless it is clear that they are completely professional in their attitude.
This brings me to unity and team spirit. In any profession if you work hard it helps if you feel valued and appreciated. It must be hard for some players who always give 100% to see others, who earn a good deal more than they do, not giving it everything. And when I talk about giving 100% I am not just talking about on the pitch for 90 minutes, I am talking about giving 100% in their everyday lives, how they train, how they eat, how they rest. For a team to have unity players need to see that their team mates, especially the highest earners, are totally committed.
At Barça we have some tremendously talented players who do give their all for the team. There do need to be some big changes but I'm afraid I think the fans who are calling for Laporta's head are making a mistake. First I believe he has done a pretty good job to turn the club around after the terrible Gaspart years, and secondly he has been voted in until 2010. I cannot see him resigning for a few protests, so for the sake of the unity I was talking about we should all support him and if things don't improve he will get voted out in 2010. I also believe Txiki should stay for now, it is time for change but not for revolution. Rijkaard should be warmly thanked for doing a good job, he will be remembered in the future as one of the best Barça coaches in our history. Unfortunately, I am not crazy about any of the candidates being talked about, but if I have to choose I'd go for Pep Guardiola as I think he understands the club, he will continue with an attacking style which we all want to see, but he will also bring passion, hunger and desire back where we need it: in the changing room.
I'll talk more about which players should leave in the near future.
Nic this was a really great post. You've consistently impressed me with your blog and I agree with a lot of your ideas. I think Barca needs some talented youngsters who have a lot of potential and are eager to prove themselves. For a player like Henry who has already established himself as one of the best in the game over the years, what is left to accomplish? If he were to retire today people would always remember him as a great player...I guess what I'm saying is we need to bring in some younger players who are hungry for titles, a legacy, and want to be endeared to a famous club like Barca. I also agree that Rijkaard should be thanked...even though this season was a bummer you can't take away that CL victory from a couple years ago, and I think we all need to remember that. A lot of people seem really upset with Rijkaard, Laporta, Ronaldinho, etc. but I think this is when we should all be throwing our support behind the club, not attacking it. Remember, guys: tots units fem forca!
Sorry that this was so long but I just wanted to get all this out there.
Totally agree with you Nic. Laporta should stay. If anyone has pushed the Barca emblem to be "Mes que un Club" it has been Laporta. Both through humanitarian efforts as well as sporting achievements.
I agree with you on your assesment on the Rijkaard situation. He has done a fantastic job in the past. But complacency has set in and he doesnt seem as "hungry" as he used to be in term of pushing the team toward success. I think Pep would be a interesting choice. Reminiscent of Brazil's selection of Dunga of coach. Inexperienced at the top level -- but certainly one of their own. And one who understands the system, the shirt, and the crowd. No one else can really fit the build. (Maybe Lucho ... but he has no interest in coaching as far as I know).
And you know Cruyff has about to take the helm of Ajax a couple of months ago. I am sure he can help out Pep in any way he can -- given that he has his hand into most things Barca.
I've stated before that I think Mourinho is a great coach but I also think he is not the right man for the job. Uniting the club is not just about keeping players happy (though Mourinho had problems with some players such as Ballack and Shevchenko at Chelsea) it is about the fans and the press too. There are too many who are not prepared to forget his actions when Barça played Chelsea in 2005.
I really don't like Chelsea but I have to say it is quite amusing to see an unknown like Avram Grant take over and rescue their season after everyone wrote them off when Mourinho left.
As for Clemente - whoever said it has got to be kidding.
Indeed. Mourinho was here once. And once is enough. He has said too many things about Barca and our players to be able to take a manager's role. He has essentially ruled himself out by claiming that the Camp Nou is like a Opera Theater and Players like Messi are actors (divers)... etc.
Quite frankly, almost anyone could have won the EPL with the amount of $$$ Abramovich dropped on Chelsea over those 2 years.
If anything, and anything at all, you should look at the work he did with Porto. and that was Building a team around Deco. Defend to the tooth and nail. And kill anyone who made a mistake. Because grinding out 1-0 wins and 0-0 ties = points.
This will not work in Barca. It would be like forgetting about 100+ years of history and playing ideology just to hire the flavor of the month.
nice article nic. i understand the cycles of football and no one wins forever. but in our case its been so unexpected. in theory our team just improved. we've developed two great young talents and then acquired the likes of henry and abidal who in the past and rumour had it, respectively, were great players. roni was also hitting his prime age and were several other players. it didnt feel like our cycle should have ended.
but the past is over. time to move on. in my opinion spain is there for the taking. no time is showing themselves the dominant force. and really only madrid and barca look to be the two at the top. sevilla have flaked out and villareal are not consitent enough and lack depth and that bit of extra quality.
on the managers. oh my word, when i think about it or talk with people my head feels like its spinning. i constantly change my mind. honestly, during one discussion with friend i change my mind 5 or 6 times. sometimes mourinho makes perfect sense and i want him. but then i think about his antics and just how he was at chelski, and i use to LOATH him. great point about splitting the club, i really feel there will be those happy and those upset, and little middle ground. i dont think he will play negative football, thats one thing im quite sure about. but i think he may suffle the squad around too much and the fans will get upset. not to mention laporat doesnt seem warm to him, but soriano and others are. if not him then pep is for sure the choice. he is a legend and that will transfer to the players i hope. whoever suggested clemente, wow, that almost made me fall of my chair.
and the new players, another tough one. i really dont want to get into the millions of those on the shortlist. for sure out i want henry, abidal, deco, thuram, ezquerro, gudi. i want roni to stay if there is a new manager, i think he could change him. and him at his best is irreplacebale. plus messi loves him, and keeping him happy would be good. to bring in: i would love diego. thats for sure. otherwise i think we should concentrate on winging attackers. etoo needs to improve his form, and i think he can. we need to give him his role as number one striker and let him have it. he can deliever the goods.
but im just going to let it all play out. thinking and reading all the rumors is just too difficult. i really dont know what is going to happen, no one really does, just got to hope it will be all for teh best. and those putting any sort of blame on laporta is jus stupid. he has been brilliant for the club, from start to now.

i was happy with these statements by begiristain....it made me understand that barca is the club i love...
an extract:
"There are shortcomings that cause no goals - a lack of speed in the area, long-range shots... but our style is indisputable and it's what's made us succeed in the Liga and in Europe.
"We are prestigious in terms of style and we're still a point of reference in Europe.
"Obviously there are shortfalls that force us to make changes. Few thought in September that we lacked effectiveness and that we couldn't score, but now we have that disappointment."
- our style is really indisputable and i wouldnt like us to change it
other noteworthy extracts:
"We went a year without titles, and reacted fast by adding four players," he said of last summer.
"The reaction was fast and hopes were raised, but in the end it didn't go well."
"Rijkaard has down an outstanding job, he's an honest man and he's of this club," said Txiki, with speculation not high on the agenda."
- he's really right about rijkaard. he's honest and he's of the club but he has lost some control(just like nic said)....just hope next season will be good
Nice article. I do believe youre right about (especially) the brazilians - Ronnie, Rivaldo, Ronaldo etc.
Nic, what is your thoughts about Michael Laudrup? He knows the club well and seem to prefer the right style of football. Some would say it's a bit to early for him to join a giant like Barca, but what did Rijkaard do? Exactly the same thing - came directly from Rotterdam. He is deffinetly one of favourites for the job. And i'm not only saying this as a Dane...
At the moment I just can't wait for the season to get over with, and as it seems, we Culés has an interesting summer ahead of us.
I always said bad things about Frank. There might not come a time that in the next few weeks to say something nice about Frank, so here is the things I did like about him.
- He Always gave the youth a chance.
- He gave us Messi, Bojan & Giovani dos Santos.
- He always gave the players trust.
- Season 2005/2006
- Season 2004/2005
- Ronaldinho's progress to the world best players.
- Also Eto'o
Here are the things Frank should be praised for. Needless to say he did tons of mistakes. Thank you Frank, but for now please leave the club really needs a new coach.
Great article Nic, Once again, I ask you to put "Mes Que Un Blog" somewhere in this blog... :)
Anyways, yes, totally agree with everything you have written and also the comments are nothing short of understanding and calm. Everyone, whoever commented, has stopped complaining and is trying to find solutions that are best for the club. Good job guys, everyone.
And Avram Grant, brilliant, achieved what Mourinho could not in his tenure at Chelsea, Champions League Final. Go Chelsea!! At least, now, people will stop talking about Mourinho being the best.
I second everything you said nic, about mourinho i think benitez said it best "it doesn't matter which coach is coaching chelsea, the real coach is Abramovich,.
which is totally true it's really ironic, looking at what grant did in one season coming back to the race of the EPL after nor his own fans or the whole world believed he can come close to showing his face from behind mourinho's reign, and then today reaching the first Champions League final in the history of their club????!
what shocked me most is not the final,
It's the fact that mourinho for the past 4 years been trying to get past liverpool in the same round with no use, and this coach just does it in one year??? which raises another issue in my mind that i kept thinking strongly about, some1 knew and was reading our clubs success carefully and recommended Han Ten Cate to be assigned as Grants Assistant coach after being the head coach of Ajax??
I now seriously believe HEN TEN CATE was the real mastermind in the locker room training ground pushing the brave decisions on to franks thought looping stonned brain of his
and in the prospect of Pep, I do see what your pointing at ..he does bring everything the players are missing to encourage them find their fighting spirit back but that's not enough Nic to win u need the tactics in this modern day footbal...and i dunno why you people have not for once mentioned Lippi is he not good enough, or people just think he's Italian he will play defensive Football?
Nic--Good article and reporting over the CL semifinal. I agree with you entirely that Rijkaard has shown too much loyalty to some players. Loyalty is a virtue, but the coach's job is not to be the players' best friend, it's to be the coach and make decisions professionally and to do what's best for the team. This includes instilling discipline. It's only right for the coach to treat players like men, but the players are here to do a job and there are certain professional requirements expected of them...like not partying too hard. Frank's (or maybe soccer coaches in general) tolerance for unprofessional behavior has always been something of a mystery to me. If an NBA player shows up late to a practice, he's normally benched for the next game. No big deal. If you get paid big money, you have big expectations to live up to. That's it.
It's no mystery that money alone doesn't buy championships, nor is it strange for champions to lose their edge. What's shocking is that last season's collapse failed to wake up certain players--and this ties in with your talk about desire and hunger. In this respect, the failure of big-name 'hungry' summer reinforcements to turn around results on the pitch is extremely disappointing. I'd like to see the club let Frank go with dignity ("Thank you, but goodbye."), but on the other hand, I think he's been given more than enough leeway by now. His grace period is long over, and letting him go *today* is what's needed. To do otherwise would be to imply that producing results like this year's is not that bad...that the club won't cut you when it should to take corrective action, but will instead give you a hero's send off at the end of the year. Tough call; he did a lot of great things for the club, for which we are thankful, but there are expectations and results to consider too.
I generally agree with you re: Laporta...he's done a fantastic job turning around the club's finances and presenting it's image to the world. I certainly don't support him stepping down now, but at the same time, he's tied himself so closely to Rijkaard. By continuing to back Frank, he has to accept some of the blame and deserves criticism (IMHO).
I used to like Txiki a lot, but now I'm neutral, as I think he played a large role in deciding who to sign last summer. So he probably deserves some blame for signing Henry and Abidal.
Tom F had a good point about losing with dignity in the previous thread. It's not an easy lesson to learn, but I think it's a good one.
Finally, re: Messi vs. Ronaldo, I admit that this makes no sense to me either. Every player is different. Every role on the pitch is different. It makes no sense to say one player is the best player in the world. How can you compare Messi to Buffon? Or Puyol to Rooney? It makes more sense to compare players in the same position. It's also why sports teams in this hemisphere vote for a most valuable player, and not a 'best' player. I could be wrong, and I'm sure many people disagree, but I think the whole debate on player of the year is silly.
both were playing the striker position for their team yesterday...
Nic, i don't found Highlight Video - Marc Crosas... can you ??
To reply on a couple of other names mentioned for coach:
I've mentioned Laudrup and other stuff on possible coaches in the comments section of LINK I'm not going to repeat it all again.
Lippi has a great track record, not many have won a World Cup and a Champions League, however, it has always been with Italian teams. I don't think the fans would take kindly to a totally different style of football.
Good point made about Henk Ten Cate, it would be great to have him back at the club but I don't know about as first team coach. Maybe as assistant again but that should depend on whoever is chosen as coach.
Barça Fan - I had a quick look on youtube and found this LINK
Unfortunately it only shows a couple of clips and the music is horrible.
hey i heard or read on the depor website that guardado is in talk with barca and the agent talked to milan aswell???? but there just rumours but it will be good buying him for the left wing and ribery for the rigth wing we should look aat drogba DID ANYONE SEE THAT GUY TODAY WOOOOOW hes an incredible striker
Shahenshah--Judging them both as pure out-and-out strikers then, I would say that they both failed during the CL semifinal then. In my opinion, the bottom line for strikers is the # of goals they scored, and neither of them achieved that. More generally, in terms of goalscoring, it's hard to argue against the statistics. 38 goals is 38 goals. Ronaldo has done that, Messi hasn't...but maybe (hopefully!) he will. When he's healthy, Messi has one of the best strike rates and goals per game averages around. But I can't say that Messi is a better striker or a more prolific goalscorer than Ronaldo at the moment.
At the same time, if I had to choose between the two of them, I would prefer to have Messi on my team rather than Ronaldo--in part because he's much more professional and has an incredible desire to fight and win, but also because he draws the attention of almost the entire defense. Assuming he has not forgotten how terrible he was earlier this season when he took on the entire opposing team by himself and never passed the ball, he gives the rest of his teammates more space to operate in when he passes the ball to them. Ronaldo is much better in the air, but Messi is great at one-twos and through balls. I think Messi's play also epitomizes what most people imagine when they think of the "beautiful game."
Nic--I'm glad you like Pep. So do I. But I worry that it's a little soon for him to take over at head coach though. I'd like to see him made assistant manager under someone with a proven track record. I seem to remember you suggesting this some posts back...am I wrong?
One thing I forgot--Ronaldo hires prostitutes. Messi doesn't. Soliciting hookers is not a lesson I think we should be teaching our children, nor does is really exemplify the whole 'mes que un club' thing. So for me, this is another reason why I would pick Messi.
Nic--you're absolutely right. That music is TERRIBLE. lol
I think Laudrup with Pep as his assistant might be a good solution. Like somebody else here, I keep changing my mind about Mourinho....sometimes i think he would be the best thing for the club while other times i think he might not be. I dunno, the thing about Mourinho is that aside form his antics he is a winner and above all else he is a leader! That is what we need more than anything right now is a real leader. I do not think he would split the dressing room either, the problems with Sheva and Ballack came about because Mourinho did not want to sign them but they were bought anyways by Abramovich. That means that they were not really in HIS plans for the team so it is understandable that there were problems. I do not think Laporta would meddle as much. Before Sheva and Ballack came in Chelsea opitimised team unity, that was their game. That is what attracts me to Mourinho so much, if he could bring that kind of unity and drive into our team then i really believe the sky is the limit. We have some of the most gifted players in world football. I had Man utd fans coming up to me all day today commenting on how impressed they were with the some of the skill they saw on the ball. Bojan and Messi are going to make a terrifying partnership one day and Iniesta (when used properly) is an absolute genius at times. As much as it hurt I honestly think losing last night might have been a blessing in disguise.....there are no excuses left now.
P.S Regarding the battle between Messi and Ronaldo. I dont think you can rate who is better, it just is not possible, but I would take Messi over Ronaldo in a heartbeat. There was one thing that was proven these two games though and that is that if you put a GOOD defender against Ronaldo then he can be stopped. How many times did Zambrotta stop him one on one (especially the first leg). Now when was the last time you saw Messi get stopped by one defender alone....it doesnt happen very often and when it does Messi will everything to get the ball back, not sit on the floor and whine like a baby. Messi any day, no arguament.
Nic
I am hearing Laurent Blanc wants to coach Barcelona. Do you have any info on this? Also your thoughts? I have no clue who this fellow is apart from knowing he is French.
this whole CR vs Messi debate is a bit silly. and honestly, only those that watch both premiership and la liga are entitled to their 2 cents. if you dont see CR is England u cant comment. i will be the first to agree that aginst both Roma and us he was rather neutralized. on zambortta owning him, i think he did well, but he was also fouling the shit out of him. CR is england is fantastic and mind blowing at times. Messi the same, his dribbling and vision is geniusm and Messi may not score 38 but he scores a good amount when fit. They are undoubtedy the two best. Id buy CR in a heart beat and whack him on that left handed forward role with Messi on the right.
I would HATE Lippi. Cant imagine him there. He has ONLY played super defensive Italian style. Juventus were the kings of that. It has to be between Jose and Pep, I dont want Laudrup at this point, but I was very impressed with his Getafe team. But id rather the other two. And Blanc not a damn chance. He may have played for us a season, and seems to be doing well in France. But France is an inferior league and ud have to go for Jose and Pep over him.
Why Pep BlugranaBoy??? He has only managed Barca B and doesn't have that much experience!!! But I agree with you on Jose!!!
Did you notice who made those passes to Crosas in the youtube vid? R10 :) I know they say he's out for the season but I don't believe it. Hoping we see him vs Real Madrid. Oh and I would take Messi over Cronaldo any day.
blaugranaboy.
CR sucks badly against big teams whether its CL or Premiership.
MESSI always plays at his peak against big teams thus I agree this debate is silly coz simply LEo is owning CR.
Look at last year CL ,except match with Roma, he was nowhere and this is the same. Both Kaka and messi where shining against Man U and other big teams unlike CR.
I dont think Mourinho is suitable for Barca. Not because of his qualification and achievement, but I do think his style of footballing will not reflecting the attacking game of Barca. Since Barca play quite similar game to Arsenal, I think Arsene Wenger is suitable.
Diego of Werder Bremen look good in Barca setup. I think he is one of few player that Barca need to buy. Others are Hleb(Arsenal) and Ribery(Bayern), though I think Ribery is the most unlikely player available for transfer.
As attractive as Wenger's style of football is, I think it would be an insult to Barca fans everywhere to reward the first team coaching position to a man who, more than any other individual, has been responsible for the poaching of Barca's youth players. It would be a slap in the face. Arsene should never have any affiliation with Barcelona.
Speaking of unsuitability, I think Wenger would have difficulties at Barca. He is uncomfortable with big name signings, as he does not want to bear the risk of them going bad and underperforming. That mentality is not going to cut it here, and I do not think he is capable of adopting a different approach to transfers. Barca is not a club that wants a 5-year "youth project."

Nic,
Just getting my voice back from the game last night at Old Trafford
Agree with your assessment of Rijkaard, he should be thanked, be warmly remembered for he has represesnted the club in an impeccable manner and also provided one of the greatest teams seen in European football.
On to Laporta, who I have been critical of, no he will not resign, but what he needs to do is give leadership and direction, this he has not done of late. Yes the club is in a far better state now then when he was elected... but we are at a pivotal point in his tenure.. the decision on who will re - place Rijkaard is such an important decision.
Moving on to that question, on the bus home last night the Penya Blaugrana Londres were discussing this, as you can image the debate was pretty heated. There were two camps... of whom the majoirty wanted Mourihno and a small minority who was adamant that he was not the man... his appointment would split the club... The view on Guardiola was perhaps the appoinment after the next! other names mentioned were Scholari, Clemente... but none that really sprung to mind..
Important decisions lie ahead..
brian kerr for barca manager! seriouslly though - i agree with john - rijkaard can only be commended for his achievements with barca given his not-so spectacular managerial career beforehand! all we can do is look to the future - repair whatever's broken and just hit the ground running into next season! we need to build around puyol, milito, yaya, xavi, spf-50, messi, bojan and, hopefully, eto'o and reinstate barca as european champions! come on chelsea!
