Valdés Signs New Contract Until 2014

Tuesday, 07 July 09, 10:43 AM · Comments (14)

Victor Valdés

After some weeks of speculation Victor Valdés has signed a new five-year contract which will see him remain at Barça until June 2014. Valdés will earn €5 million a year with the possibility of another €2 million in bonuses for various objectives achieved, while the get-out clause in his contract has gone up from €100 million to €150 million.

Valdés will no doubt always have his fans and his critics, but I for one am delighted he is staying. He may not be the best in the world but bringing in a new goalkeeper can always be risky as is clear if we look back over the last few years at keepers such as Vitor Baia, Lopetegui or Bonano who all struggled under the pressure of keeping goal at Camp Nou. Valdés has proved he can deal with the pressure, and for now I believe he is the best man for the job.

Without weighing in on this one way or the other I can only guess that whoever suggested the amount of the " get-out clause " must have a great sense of humour !!

I am also happy keeping valdes for now .. especially with how well pique has fit in the the back and with milito coming back next season.
I also read that he won la liga's keeper of the year award.

It's not just a crazy suggestion, the clause is directly related to his new salary.
I am also delighted and i also think he's the best for the job.

I join the ranks of the happy ones here! With Pinto, this is a position sorted. Sure I would have been happy to see Buffon defend our goals, but in the present climate I think it's a very wise decision. Valdes might not be the best keeper around, he's still one of the best shot-stoppers you will find. And he might have one or a few "holes" in a season, he has proven he can handle the pressure of the very big games (a quality that just nothing can pay for) and that he can carry the team through a season. This definitely leaves us with a weakness in the air, but the team has proven it can cope with it. There are better goalkeepers than him of course, but not much, and who would have realistically joined us? I'm delighted this is sorted to the benefit of all involved

lol I know sometimes I criticise him, but I am frankly astonished at this:

"Valdés will earn €5 million a year "

... for a 'good' GK, who really does 3-4 things in 90 minutes, that is shocking. No wonder so many people are pissed off in the world.

Sometime hes better than casillas.. 8O i hope he will improve a lot and MAYBE, yeah maybe one day he can challange casillas for no.1 spanish GK 8)

Kimi,

No way he'll legitimately challenge Casillas for the spot. I really think they're both in their prime, and Valdes isn't even the no. 3 keeper in Spain. He is arguably just as good as Casillas on 1 on 1 opportunities, and his reflexes are super impressive. I think the big difference is positioning and decision making.

And catching a ball :)

To be honest i am quite releived he has stayed, just because getting another goalie would be a hassle, and seeing that for some bizarre reason, we seem to be getting no one in the transfer market its good hes here.

I also think his performance was pretty solid last season, he seems to have matured slightly, i just hope he can keep his focus and warrant the 5 million he is getting paid,

Other than that i am really dissapointed we have no new players, i really would like to see some real news on Goal.com, rather than the same rubbish spun in 6 different ways. its been quite a boring summer for the Tri Champions

for al the critics, you can try to go protest in the camp nou.....laporta, txiki and pep have already signed on him but i guess the argument wuld still go on for the next 3/4 years

Even when i also think we need some new players (just a couple), i much rather have a boring summen being Tri Campions than building a team out of nothing with only the hope of winning something (or at least not making the fool) this season, like our rivals have been doing.
We are not about big names, we're about big players. Just a little rememberance in case you guys already forgotten the incredible month of may we all lived.

@ Maria Ines
Yeah, we're a home grown team. I'm glad we're keeping Valdez and I'm glad we're keeping Bojan. Barca benefits from its youth program. It has chemistry millions can't buy. Real will likely explode with so many superstars on the bench. I think Barca's making an honest effort to being last year's team back on the pitch to defend itself. Good move.

Apart from the Eto'o saga I think we are going about the summer signings correctly and have a clear understanding what type of players we need to sign. See this article:

I am glad that Valdes has renewed, as he is the best keeper for barca. His reflexes re superb and he knows how to handle the pressure of keeping goal in the Nou Camp - which is a big plus. this is the reason why so many before him have failed...

i'm happy to keep valdes, but AMAZED that atletico only had to pay asenjo's €5m buyout clause, that's so cheap!!
