Barça qualified for the group stage of the Champions League tonight but the alarm bells will be ringing after a poor performance which saw the first defeat for the team under Pep Guardiola. A goal from Brazilian defender Cleber gave Wisla a 1-0 win on the night though Barça go through 4-1 on aggregate.
There were few problems for either goalkeeper early on, but Wisla had the better chances. On 12 minutes mistakes from Abidal and then Puyol led to a shot from 25 yards from Diaz which went straight at Valdés. Then after 20 minutes Valdés made a mess of a Piqué backpass and ended up clearing straight to the feet of a Wisla forward who chipped the ball back in only for the ball to drift wide of the far post.
Thierry Henry then put in a couple of crosses from the left but first Eto'o headed weakly wide and then Iniesta was beaten to the ball by a defender. Barça's best chance of the half came three minutes before the break when Iniesta made a good run before slipping the ball through to Henry who shot wide from 16 yards when he should have done much better.
There was a lack of intensity to Barça's game which was eventually punished early in the second half when Cleber stole in unmarked at a corner to fire in a header that was too powerful for Valdés to stop. Barça did react to the goal and began to create some chances, Eto'o forcing a diving save after being set up by Iniesta, and later Eto'o again had a shot deflected over after being sent through by Toure.
The closest Barça came to an equalizer was in the 62nd minute when Piqué headed a corner onto the crossbar. And Pique had two more chances in the space of a minute near the end but his finishing was poor. With a couple of minutes remaining Bojan fought well to win the ball in the Polish penalty area but then wasted the chance by shooting over from 6 yards.
We will have to hope that this performance was down to the huge advantage from the first leg, and perhaps it is unrealistic to expect great things from the team in a match such as this. However, despite playing a more physical midfield with Keita and Toure, later reinforced with Gudjohnsen and Hleb, Barça looked far from convincing. Eto'o and Henry who played much of the second half leading a 4-4-2 formation failed to finish when the chances presented themselves, while the defensive mistakes were again quite worrying. I don't know what is so difficult about everyone picking up a man to mark at a corner but Barça continue to be caught out in this area. The early signs under Guardiola had been good but today's game showed all the signs of many of the away performances in the last two seasons under Frank Rijkaard.
Barça: Valdés 5.5; Alves 5.5, Puyol 5.5, Piqué 6, Abidal 5; Xavi 6 (Gudjohnsen m56, 5), Toure 6, Keita 5.5; Iniesta 6 (Hleb m65, 5), Eto'o 5.5 (Bojan m73, 5.5), Henry 5.
Valdes is a problem and I said so in my la Liga review. Please check out my profile and read the blog!!!! we need a better keeper.We will not win a freaking thing with this guy in the wood...this is ridiculous...we should have won this game. I am outraged!!!@!!
... with in one piece with my sympathy for Barcelona, but: we demonstrated, like the club around five hundred times with smaller budget, and the lack of reinforcements - is able to fight and to be also proud from one's over of hundred years' tradition and history.
Fan the Vistula Cracow.
its hard for me to blame valdes and im sick of ppl hoo keep blaming him....before blaming valdes....we should blame the terrible barca defence....so many mistakes each game....it is true that we havent conceded many goals this preseason but ive watched every game...and so many terrible back passes...so much miscommunication...they look very shaky.....before u blame valdes....blame puyol, marquez, pique, and the rest of the defenders
Diatus what the hell are you talking about? I agree he has sometimes performed below par for the past 2 seasons, but yesterday Valdes was probably man of the match. In NO WAY is Valdes to blame for yesterday's loss. I don't know if you just like bashing him or what but you make absolutly no sense...
It certainly rings the alarm bells in the defence one thing i pointed out was that renewing sylvinho's contract was a big mistake, we shouldve brought in a left back that is good in attack and solid in defence that could actually challenge poor abidals position he is complacent now he doesn't even try cause he knows sylvinho will never be able to compete for his position,ive always held on and thought he'll improve but nah i've run out patience with him
Instead of looking for a arshavin(god forbid) we should be aiming for a evra.i am sure guardiola gave the team a piece of his mind after the game puyol was at fault for the goal he was completely alone i don't know what was wrong with him in this game he made a lot of mistakes .
And valdes he wasn't poor at all he just made that one mistake and he did two or three world class saves his reflex and shot stopping is top class i vouch for him.
Oh and one thing i observed was that putting iniesta on the right wing really is a sin he was poor and his only highlite was that in the box pass to henry he did absolutley nothing i match he wont look back at for sure, i dont know why guardiola didn't start hleb there at that right flank when he came in he did pretty good there.
This match really didn't mean anything really guys just don't believe the press since they always blow things out of proportion just to catch a eye to sell a paper.
Ok that was bad, but you guys need to calm down a bit. First of all, Wisla probably had the best game of their lives, while Barca knew the job was done last week. Yes we could have played better and the players did not give anywhere near their best, but really what do you expect with absolutely nothing to play for? We won this tie already and this game was just a formality, one last friendly. Everybody is getting ready for the start of the league campaign on Sunday and they want to be fresh for the game that matters. Quite frankly i dont blame them for not having the foot on the peddle. All that being said, after we conceded we were unlucky not to equalise if not win. There were more than a few chances that went begging, we hit the post and we had a few BS offside decisions. I think this loss could be a good thing in that it will ground the players a bit and it highlights to Pep some of our weaknesses while he can still do something about it.
well i watched the game last night and i must say the only thing that really worried we was the defense. but judging this game may not even have its merits because frankly i dont think they were motivated to play their best. it was really an unnecessary formality. secondly, dont underestimate the wisla environment. that club is know for having one of the most loud and intimiting football firms in the world. plus that team had it all to prove at home after their spanking in spain.
but despite all that there are a few thing and a few players that are worrying:
1. abidal: how that player has managed to fool the world of professional football into believning he is actually good is beyond me. that mistake on the 12th minute was unforgivable. i think he is terrible. and whoever wants us to sign evra, plz stop playing championship manager. but i do want another left back that said.
2. pique: his distribution was pretty awful and he needs to stop thinking he is some midfielder who can play the ball around. he must just tackle, header and pass it off to a proper midfielder. he worries me.
3. keita: i dont think he showed that he is that great truth be told. he barely did anything. there is on way any sane person would use him over yaya ( so lets hope pep feels the same)
4. valdes: get off his back. diatus: "we wont win a thing with him in teh wood", funny i remember him being there we we won a league, a double and i remember a sparkling performance in the CL final. true he had a few blunders and he needs to stop that. but again he isnt going anywhere and he is really a good keeper.
on the better side, again i was happy with henry. he was a bit lazy with some balls and that but he made good runs and made good passes. alves was superb and just works so hard and wants to be in the play so much.
overall, the best thing was seeing guardiola wasnt happy with the display. that is encouragigne enough. its early days. the real test is on sunday!
Why were Barca wearing the home jersey away and the away jersey at home?
@Hala Madrid Why does it matter
If you ask me its all the same. @ All the other Barca Fans , I rather Barca lose 1 to nothing in an away game for the CL qualification round where we won 4-0 home then losing the first game of the season. We had to lose a game some time. The Players are tired, They gave us one hell of a preseason. Give them a brake.
Valdez did played his part in the defeat. But he cannot be alone blamed. It falls on the entire defense. And the most should go to Puyol. Last two-three matches he has been making mistakes consistently. He needs to take charge and rally everyone around him.
This result should not be considered alone. This should be considered along with a last gasp victory over Boca. Now does some bell rings. Guardiola has to tackle a lot of things, I did make a list of it. Check this out : LINK
@ HALA MANDRIL. The same question was asked with the review of the home game and Nic's answer was: "Barça wore away colours because Wisla turned up with one set of red shirts and one set of blue shirts, the referee decided that either of these shirts would clash with Barça's blaugrana strip, so Barça changed to yellow."
@Hala Madrid!! Rather ask why madrid pay so much money to adidas to come up with the same bullshit jersey every season,, madridista scum
@ blaugranaboy, i never said we should sign evra i said we should sign A evra there's a diffrence and for your information i play football manager not championship manager it suxx
@Josep,
You are free to keep ignoring the issue. Please continue to blindly support Valdes. We have to be objective about this. Goalkeepers at this level just should not be this prone to error period. WE NEED A BETTER KEEPER. He is terrible off his line and defends corners terribly. Someone last year suggested that we needed to sign another keeper to give him serious competition and I couldn't agree more. Josep, since you want to defend him, please tell me when was the last time Valdes made a save that kept us in the game? when? He might have been decent in years past but he just doesn't cut it anymore and we need to move on. You can blame the defense all you want but jeez, at this level he's got to be better than this otherwise we will find ourselves right here at the end of the season talking about what might have been.
@Hala Madrid
Please come give us your opinion after the Deportivo La Coruna game against RM this Sunday!!!let's first see if Real Madrid can exorcise their demons at Depor first. Until then, you've not got much to say considering that Valencia came very close to invalidating your title.
Hopefully Barca has learn something from the game..take the positvie-we need to improve the defensive line..yeah, sometime win, sometme loose and it's normal. Most important thing is always learn from mistakes to be a stronger and better team everyday.
FORCA BARCA!!!
I think the larger problem that happened in this game is complacency more then anything. We saw it too many times last year when they were leading and then let their opponents come out with the win (Atletico game comes to mind). I just hope Pep was firm with the boys after the game. Anyways can't wait for the season to begin!
With your permission Nic This is what I think. This is a Barca Blog. If you come here You will talk about Barca. Madrid Fans could tell us what they think in a respective and civilized way. We shouldn't be talking about Madrid. Sorry Nic I had to say it. Madrid winning or losing isn't the issue we want Barca to win not Madrid to lose. Barca are Champions and Champions Should over come any team and shouldn't fear anyone. That is what think, I come to this blog more than once a day to chat with other Barca Fan, Sorry Nic if I'm out of line but it truly is " More Than Just a Blog".
Joe Henry:
I am with you 100% . I recommend that the Madrid guy be zapped off this site altogether !!
Ok Diatus. I definitely don't feel like arguing with you about it so let's just agree to disagree on the issue. Your question "when was the last time Valdes made a save that kept us in the game?" just left me wondering if you actually saw the game or just the 'highlight' of it, being the Wisla goal...
@Josep
I saw the whole game live and my point is that you have to see the other side of the coin too. I spent all of last year defending him but don't you agree that he needs to improve?If you don't feel like defending your point maybe it's because you can't!!!!
BLAME THE DEFENCE TOO, Y R U BLAMING VALDES ONLY?? the defence makes mistakes every single game...every game!! every1 expects barca to have a great defence but none of them seem confident defending....yes, even puyol.
@FCB88
I agree with you that the defense bears part of the responsibility. However, a pattern of error has been building from Valdes and I, in no way, have anything against him. We have to recognize that he's been off his game for a long time now. I concede that we haven't always had a great defense and I did mention that in my La Liga Review on my blog. We are weak in the middle but a good goalkeeper should be able to not only anticipate but operate with confidence in his box. Valdes seems to doubt his decision making at times and titubates coming out to defend either corners or balls floated behind our defense. That is a recipe for disaster for any team. He meets all the physical prerequisites for his position. He is tall, strong in the air and plays well with his feet but he has lacked the necessary poise in leading that defense and the required authority in defending corners. Case in point, I remember Real Betis scoring a goal against Barcelona last year on the return leg (It might have been initiated by Rafael Sobis, I think). A goal that seemed great at first glance but, upon second review, Valdes was simply caught ball watching thus beaten at the near post. He neither was ready to be part of the play nor did he warn Zambrota of the overlapping run. Again, I am not out to get the man, I am simply observing his errors and his need for improvement.
yea i do agree with u....valdes is making mistakes and he hasnt been at his best for the past 2 seasons but i just hate it how ppl keep blaming him every time another team scores against us...i dont have a problem if ppl blame him but they also have to blame the rest of the defence who also make mistakes each game.
@Blaugranaboy,
I might have spoken out of disgust but I see your point and I do agree that we've won with him, "in the wood", in the past... but that's the past my friend. Don't you think he needs to improve?aren't my points valid on his recent form?
Hello there,
I agree with Diatus, valdes needs to pull his weight, fair enough he makes great saves, but is a right idiot at times. Pique gave him that back pass, it was an awful one, but he still needed to deal with it. And i knew he would give the ball away, and he did he just rolled it srtight to an attacker, and he has done this in the past, its great he makes some super saves from time to time, but he needs to be more focused.
And whats with all this comming out of the box and flyin kicking the ball, he needs to compose him self and really hit the ball
Although our defense was crap last season he did screw us, too many poor goalkeeping decisions.
Performances like this is definately not helping our defense, seriously i think we should play pinto whole season.
Or get a goalie in the jan transfer window, Valdes just scares me
I was disappointed on our intensity up until their goal. I knew we were going through regardless, but with our class and skill we should always win games, especially in Poland. Once again, i hope Pep changes this lazy attitude of our players b4 the season starts. But i am so excited about this year, we will kill those fags in white
Hey I am starting a mini league only for Spain since I forgot to join the fcbnews euro league on time. Please join so we can have a spain only leage for this thread. League- La Blaugrana pw- messi
diatus:
i know valdes hasnt been at his best the last year, but he is a very good goalkeeper. depending on your time as a barca fan, valdes was a godsend to our team the year he came into the first squad. we had gone through about 8 years of the worst goalkeepers u have ever seen in your life. hesp, dutruel (the worst professoinal PLAYER ive ever seen, enke, bonano!!!!! then we had reina briefly and arnau a bit. those were terrible keepers (reina was young). then we bought rustu and all of a sudden valdes came in and he kept rustu (at the time righ after the WC a hot goalkeeper) on the bench. his first year he had the normal adaptatoin but the next 3 years he was zamora in spain (best goalkeeper by statitics) and really was so reliable. and he has saved us plenty. CL he was great and the one that sticks with me most was our 2-1 win in bernabeu the year xavi scored the winner after he chipped if over Iker after Roni gave him a sick scooped past. honestly, valdes in that game, 1st half saved teh score from being 10-0. i was watching with a few RM buddies of mine so i remember that clearly.
but sure its the past. but the past shows he has the talent and knowledge. against wisla he had 2 errors, and he needs to stop that, i agree. hopefully hte GK coach is speaking to hin, and i think he knows himself. he needs to make a few better decisions.
but saying that because he is not a international GK is totally stupid. the spanish team is traditonally biased AGAINST barca players and honestly how can he take it from Casillas. he has been asked to be the 2nd keeper but refused.
i have said this many times, I INVITE ANYONE TO NAME ME 6 BETTER keepers than valdes besides hte ONLY worldclass keepers (Casillas, Buffon, and Cech) who are all untransferable. and dont just give me stupid answers, think about the transfer consequences.
also people underestime the value of a homegrown player, it means A LOT to me and to many other barca fans.
Valdes played great!!!! Why do some people hate him so much????
Anyway a defeat is a defeat, we got through to the group stages anyway!!!!
Dear Diatus. I agree he has to "improve". Every player has to "improve". You just make it seem like every game Barcelona lost for the last couple of years is all Valdes's fault. Well I just tell you to cut him some slack. Yes Valdes makes errors. Yes they can cost us. But why blame it all on him? - For example Wisla game. Why not blame the 'errors' that Bojan, Gudjohnsen etc made, by missing clear cut chances? THAT are the 'errors' that cost us the game too you know. And THAT are the things i would blame rather than just pick on the goalie. That is a little too easy for me. And I am not even talking about the defense don't get me started. I used to be a goalie, and I can tell you one thing. Valdes is world class!
No no no.. valdes not that bad and he's not the only one to blame.. i still have faith on Valdes.. but like everybody else, i hope he has learn from mistakes and want to improve.
Isn't going to be like that all of the season. Victor Valdes is Barca's Goalkeeper. This is not Fifa 09 where you can just Buy a new goalkeeper. So he makes mistakes but he is a good goalkeeper not great like Iker but good. Definitely not bad
LINK Joke of the year. Coach of the Year: Bernd Schuster (Real Madrid) - A decent run in the Champions League and a close-fought title win will see him considered the top manager, even though there will be bumps along the way. Honourable mentions for Pep Guardiola and Manolo Jiménez, both of whom will improve their sides markedly on last season. A Decent run in the CL LMAO, they where out from Roma.
Barca should sail through this group with ease !!
Ok guys,
I will cut him some slack!!! Blaugranaboy and Josep, I hope we remember this conversation. Both of you made very valid counter arguments and I will leave him out of my criticism for now anyway. My hope is that as the season progresses, we do not have to revisit this. Josep, I do agree with you that criticism might have been warranted for those who missed clear cut chances but I was talking about Valdes not Bojan or Guddy. Time will tell!!!

I've yet to see the match myself but from all the reports this is worrying. Of course, one can't expect perfection and there needed to be a lose at some point. Loses under these circumstances would be preferable, since it's overall effect was negligible. Having said that, it's not part of the club philosophy to 'allow' losses, and I'm pretty certain it's not part of Pep's philosophy either. Things obviously didn't go well for Barça this time around. We'll see how Guardiola and the players respond to this in the weeks to come.
It should also be pointed out one 'ace' was not shown in this match: Messi. Still resting from his Olympic adventures, he will only add to the Blaugrana's game. But, Messi isn't a defender and that's what needs watching.
I was disappointed after this game as well..but this game had no significance at all..It was as good as done, so I m not that sad...anyways, it's better to fall now than to fall later...
