Player Of The Season 2009/2010 And Player By Player Review

Thursday, 27 May 10, 02:07 PM

FC Barcelona 2009/2010

For the last two seasons I ran this as two separate articles but in order not to repeat myself I am putting them together in one long review. Starting with the player of the season I have listed the players according to their merits and influence on the season, so perhaps rather than an order of who was best, the list follows more the idea of Most Valuable Player. So without further ado...

1) Leo Messi - Every single season he surprises us by getting even better. Started the season very strongly scoring 8 goals in his first 8 games, then went through a difficult period after the stress involved in Argentina's World Cup qualification. By December he was back to his best scoring twice in an exceptional performance in the 1-3 win at Deportivo and then he...

Barça 4 Valladolid 0

Sunday, 16 May 10, 08:50 AM

Celebration after Messi scores the third goal. Barça 4-0 Valladolid

Pep Guardiola's Barça picked up their 7th title this evening, finishing all the hard work of the season to claim La Liga after cruising past Valladolid. If there was any suffering tonight it was all in the first ten minutes when our nerves allowed Valladolid the chance to take the lead, but then news came in that Real Madrid were losing at Malaga and our nerves settled. We took firm control of the game and after an own goal from Valladolid's Prieto, followed quickly by a second from Pedro there was no doubt about who would end the day as Champions. Leo Messi completed the job with two second half goals which took him to an incredible 34 league goals, 47 in total for the season, figures that...

Could Zlatan score the goal that wins us the title?

This is it. No room for mistakes tomorrow. A win at home to Valladolid will earn us our 20th La Liga title with a historic 99 points and leave Real Madrid, who spent a ridiculous amount of money last summer, with nothing. Of course we are clear favourites to win the game and I'm extremely confident we will do the job, but watching today's FA Cup Final between Chelsea and Portsmouth reminded me of the amazing things that can happen in a football match, Chelsea could have lost after hitting the woodwork five times if Portsmouth had scored their penalty.

Barça will be without Xavi and Maxwell, but Keita seems to be over his injury and Andres Iniesta could well play a part in the game after a month on the sidelines....

Forty-Eight Hours To Go

Friday, 14 May 10, 10:11 AM

Will we win it again?

I have to admit I've found it difficult to write much this week. There's been an awful lot of speculation about Cesc and Villa, the initial squad lists of 30 for the World Cup have been announced and also the presidential candidates have started their campaigns but all these subjects can wait for next week, there really is only one thing on my mind at the moment and that is our final league game with Valladolid. From all the press talk about the other subjects one could be led to believe that the game is a foregone conclusion, but we should all know by now that no such thing exists in football.

On Sunday at 7pm eleven of our players will take to the pitch at Camp Nou to face eleven players representing Valladolid. We are playing with...

A Weekend To Remember

Monday, 10 May 10, 07:52 AM

Puyol, Bojan and Pique join in the celebrations of Regal Barça's Euroliga victory in Paris

It turned out to be an extraordinary weekend for Football Club Barcelona. Not only did we take a giant step towards retaining La Liga in football, but our basketball team, Regal Barça, also won the Euroliga - the equivalent of football's Champions League - by beating Olympiakos 86-68 in Paris. It was fantastic to see the triumph but it was also great to see Xavi, Busquets, Bojan, Piqué and Puyol cheering on the team from the sidelines. It just goes to show what a family atmosphere there is at the club at the moment. Having won the Copa del Rey earlier in the season the basketball team just need to win the league to complete a triple to follow on from our football team's success in...

Sevilla 2 Barça 3

Saturday, 08 May 10, 10:32 AM

Bojan Krkic scores the second goal. Sevilla 2-3 Barça

Just Valladolid stand in the way of Football Club Barcelona and our 20th La Liga title after a nerve-wracking 2-3 win at Sevilla. We played brilliantly for 65 minutes to go three goals up but then we suffered a lapse of concentration which allowed Sevilla, who were down to ten men, to score twice in the space of three minutes to set up a nail-biting finish. However, we kept our nerve well at the end and allowed Sevilla very few opportunities to equalize despite the frenzy of excitement from the Sanchez Pizjuan crowd.

As had been speculated Pep Guardiola left Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the bench which meant a front line of Pedro, Messi and Bojan. From the start of the game it was clear that we were...

Leo Messi scores one of his two goals in last season's 0-3 win at Sevilla

The most incredible battle for the Spanish league title is reaching its climax. Tomorrow night in the penultimate game of the season against Sevilla in the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium we will attempt to defend our one point advantage over Real Madrid. If we win in Seville, La Liga will almost certainly be ours as we will only have the relatively easy task of beating Valladolid at Camp Nou in the final game to clinch the title. Tomorrow is make or break time and Pep Guardiola has taken the entire first team squad, including the injured Andres Iniesta, to Seville for the game. Gerard Pique and Eric Abidal will face late fitness tests, and while Abidal's participation is quite doubtful I feel sure that Piqué will play whatever the state...

Barça 4 Tenerife 1

Tuesday, 04 May 10, 09:58 AM

Leo Messi puts us on the road to victory. Barça 4-1 Tenerife.

Barça move four points above Real Madrid tonight after a complicated victory over Tenerife in the pouring rain at Camp Nou. Leo Messi opened the scoring early on but a mistake from Carles Puyol led to a Tenerife equalizer before half time. We had a nervous time at the start of the second half until Bojan Krkic fired us back into the lead just after the hour before late goals from Pedro Rodriguez and Messi guaranteed us the points.

Pep Guardiola decided to rest Sergio Busquets and Pedro which meant Toure Yaya came into midfield while Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned to the centre forward position while Bojan got his reward for a good performance at Villarreal with another start on the...

Preview: Barça - Tenerife

Monday, 03 May 10, 06:45 AM

leo Messi celebrates one of his three goals in the 0-5 win at Tenerife in January.

Tenerife will always have a place in the hearts of Barcelona fans after their victories over Real Madrid on the last day of both the 1991/92 and 1992/93 seasons helped us to clinch the league title. However, tomorrow night there will be no favours as the three points are vital to us. Real Madrid, somehow or other, continue to win every week which means there can be no letting up. We may all feel that the big game is at Sevilla on Saturday but both our remaing home games are against relegation threatened teams who are fighting for their lives.

Tenerife have looked like clear relegation favourites all season but a recent run of nine points in their last four games have given then a lifeline and they will be desperate to take...

Villarreal 1 Barça 4

Saturday, 01 May 10, 03:11 PM

Tonight's goalscorers Xavi, Bojan and Messi. Villarreal 1-4 Barça.

Barça bounced back from the disappointment of the Champions League elimination with a splendid 1-4 win at Villarreal which could prove to be crucial in regaining La Liga this season. Two goals from Leo Messi and one apiece from man of the match Xavi Hernandez and Bojan Krkic earned us our 28th league victory of the season which equalled a record set by Real Madrid in 87/88 and Barça in 96/97. Xavi was carrying an injury but he decided he wanted to play, proving his commitment to the cause by playing a part in all four goals.

Pep Guardiola showed that he doesn't care what your price tag is by leaving Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the bench and giving a start to Bojan on the left side of attack, this meant we...
