Porto allez...

Wednesday, 25 February 09, 07:02 AM

With a masterful and unwavering display, F.C. Porto deserved another outcome, other than the 2-2 draw, from the clash with Atlético de Madrid on the UEFA Champions League first knock-out round. Lisandro scored twice but the Dragons have had many other great chances to clinch the triumph at the Spanish capital.

The first goal opportunity of the match appeared in the first minute, with Rodríguez firing for the foremost of several decisive interventions from Leo Franco, the best of Atlético in the clash.

The home side responded with the advantage, signed by Maxi Rodríguez, but it were the Portuguese Champions to claim the superiority throughout the first half, with the attacking trident, formed by Hulk, Lisandro and Rodríguez, putting Atlético’s rearguard in permanent panic.

It wasn’t a surprise, therefore, when Lisandro pulled level on the 22nd minute, with an opportune shot in the face of the host’s goalkeeper. On the edge of the halftime, the logic of the match was once again turned upside down with the effort from Forlán dodging the expected stop from Helton, securing a totally unmerited disadvantage for the Dragons.

The reaction came with strength in the second half and, similarly to what happened along the first 45 minutes, it was of F.C. Porto the dominance in the game, again with several major chances wasted by the Dragons. Definitely destined to be in the spotlight of the match, Lisandro claimed part of the justice with his second in the clash, his sixth in the competition in which he’s the top goalscorer, levelling the score on the 72nd minute.

The authority showed by Jesualdo Ferreira’ side in the Madrid’s match opens a clear way of opportunity for the definitive closure of the round at the Dragão, in two weeks time, where the magical display of F.C. Porto can light up the qualification for the quarter-finals.

FcPorto vs Sl Benfica

Saturday, 07 February 09, 01:02 PM

portoBenfica vs PortoFC Porto host SL Benfica in the sides' 150th league meeting on Sunday, with the Lisbon club's Spanish coach Quique Sánchez Flores adamant that the Eagles will be "very competitive" as Portugal's top two meet at the Estádio do Dragão.

Competitive situation
Just one point separates the top two in Portugal after 16 games, with Sporting Clube de Portugal snapping at both sides' heels as they play SC Braga at home. A fourth successive Liga title is the main priority for Jesualdo Ferreira's Dragons, as evidenced when they fielded a reserve eleven in their 4-1 midweek league cup defeat against Sporting. Ferreira shrugged off the defeat, saying: "The match against Benfica will be different, because it's for the championship and not a knockout competition."

'Getting better'
Former Valencia CF boss Sánchez Flores went into his side's semi-final against Vitória SC with a different attitude, fielding a full-strength side and being rewarded with a 2-1 win and a place in the final. While his opposite number at Porto felt it wiser to rest his biggest stars for the league game, Sánchez Flores was eager to keep Benfica's competitive edge honed ahead of their trip north. "We have been working hard and getting better step by step," he said. "I'm sure we are going to be very competitive at the Estádio do Dragão."

Upper hand
Successes in the last two decades have seen Porto gain the upper hand in the 149 previous Liga meetings between the sides, with the Dragons having 57 victories to the Eagles' 52. In 74 games in Porto itself, the home side have won 45 to Benfica's 12. Redressing that balance a little would be a massive lift for Benfica, but Argentinian Pablo Aimar was wary of placing too much pressure on his side. He said: "It is a 'clássico'. It will be an important game for us and obviously difficult, but it is still too early to say if it will decide the league."
