Theo Walcott: The Big Bang Bang Bang Machine!

Thursday, 11 September 08, 03:12 AM

Yesterday was a great day for the human race and for the Arsenal with the overwhelming success of the ‘first beam’ of the Large Hadron Collider and the superb Walcott hat-trick for England against Croatia last night. Although CERNs test of the LHC yesterday didn’t stretch to any actual proton smashing, Theo more than made up for that with some smashing of his own: namely the smashing of Bilic’s Croatian side; the smashing of their home unbeaten record; and perhaps most importantly for the Gooners, the smashing of Theo’s lack of confidence. With any luck, Theo can use this game as a platform from which he can take his fledgling game to a new level. All the same, he is still a young fella so let’s leave the Walcott Hysteria to the England fans and continue to give him the patient support he has come to enjoy at the Grove.

Isn’t it nice having an Arsenal player excelling in the England team? I had forgotten what that was like. In fact I have become so used to disliking members of the England team on the basis of their playing for Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool and Tottenham, that I have almost forgotten how to like England. On a personal level I hope that Walcott’s display is the first of a great England career, the side effect of which is to allow me to enjoy International football again. As an aside, Bendtner got on the scoresheet as well last night – so a good night all round for the Arsenal strikers on International duty.

The other side benefit of the England performance is that the underlying dislike of Fabio Capello has been put on the back burner. Capello is one of the all-time great coaches and England fans and the English press should be ecstatic (and amazed) that he is our manager. True, I think international coaches should be the same nationality as the team they manage, but seeing as there are no good English coaches I would much rather have a gifted foreign coach than another imbecile like Steve McLaren.

Don’t get me wrong – the International Break is still one of the most boring times of the sporting year!

It’s all but over now and the Arsenal get back in action on Saturday afternoon (a proper time for football), away to Blackburn. Always a toughie, hopefully we can take our form from the pre-international break into this game, particularly as Liverpool and United are playing this weekend - so one of our main rivals will be dropping points.

Our players are finally coming back from injury with Diaby possibly fit for the first time this season, RVP looking good for Holland, and Eduardo aiming to be back in action before Christmas. The bad news though is that new hero Samir Nasri could be out of contention though having damaged his knee on duty with France. Unfortunately for Chelsea but fortunately for us Michael Essien was seriously injured and could be out for up to 6 months.

Rumours are rife that a new Chief Exec will be announced soon. This is great news, the sooner we can get the boardroom sorted the sooner we can all stop worrying about it and get on with the business of supporting the Arsenal.
