Man Utd Sign Anderson and Nani?

Thursday, 31 May 07, 05:17 AM

Manchester United have apparently reached deals to sign Brazilian startlet Anderson from Porto, and Portuguese wonder-kid/winger Nani from Sporting Lisbon .

F*CK. SH*T. B*LL*CKS. OK, didn't need that many asterisks there, but come on. This is exactly what the Arsenal needed to do after they won in 1998/2002/2004 - strengthen. There's been no news on the transfer front apart from Robin Van Persie saying that they don't really need to sign anyone, and that Julio Baptista has decided to ship his chunky, useless self back to Madrid. COME ON! Man United have gone and signed two of the best young players in Europe (and i'd rate Anderson as one of the best young players in the world), for £35 bleedin' million pounds for the pair. That's almost Chelsea-esque.

Nani has excelled this year for a rejuvenated Sporting, and his goalscoring wingplay could see him become into one of the most dangerous attackers in Europe. Him and Cristiano Ronaldo on opposite wings might just see the introduction of double fullbacks on each side as a tactic (well Chelsea do it anyways).

Anderson is a bit more of an enigma. Back in October/November the press couldn't shut up about him, he was doing amazing things in the Champions League, Barcelona were interested, and he was enjoying his football. He's since gone off the boil a bit, but the ability is still there.

It might be a shame though if he doesn't achieve what he's supposed to at United. I know many Brazilians consider it a shame that Kleberson (one of the most talented players in Brazil at the time) never achieved his potential and ended up losing his way completely in Manchester, and I would hope that the same does not happen with Anderson, because he really is a special player. I don't really have faith in Alex Ferguson's management in this matter, but maybe Carlos Queiroz will prove crucial here.

Four years ago Man Utd missed out on Ronaldinho because they didn't want to pay a few million pounds more. Now, they're splashing out in a big way, and one or both of those players might well go on to eclipse and exceed Ronaldinho in a few years' time.

Sounds like it'll be a great deal for Utd. They were talking about it on Newstalk radio here in Ireland last night and the soccer pundit seemed to think that Anderson plays the same position as Rooney. Is that the way you see it?

My head felt dizzy when I read the news last night. United are efficient when they sign - Anderson is the one to really watch out for, really skillful. Have not really seen Nani play an awful lot so don't know much about him. Add to that, the strong possibility of Hargreaves joining United, am feeling a bit depressed ! Surely Arsene has to see this ... when a title winning squad needs to strengthen, he must see where he is going wrong. Still, for all we know, don't be surprised if he signs another unheard of 16 year old.

Well Anderson has played on the wing quite a lot, but that's not his position. I see him more as being a Ronaldinho/Diego type... maybe played on the wing at an early stage, but definitely a roamer. So yes, maybe a Rooney replacement, maybe a complement for him, who knows?

Thing is, United aren't really in a position to be spending 52m pounds without selling, so somebody might well be leaving for big, big money. But who? Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid?

SM interesting... If Madrid can't get Kaka, Cristiano is the next on the list. But who knows maybe SAF is just trying to make Cristiano feel comfortable staying bringing in more Portuguese league players. They do need to sell. Hargreaves should fit in nicely. Heinze is unfortunately one that may be leaving to Madrid or elsewhere. Who else? Maybe some of the older classics like Neville or Scholes?

Regarding Arsenal, they gotta do more. It is not looking good. Bring on David Dein and Kroenke to buy the Arsenal and bring in some much needed investment and to ensure that Henry and Wenger stay. IMO.

Kroenke can fucking stay in Colorado we don't want him, and the whole "Kroenke will bring in money" thing is a massive myth. His personal wealth is under 900m pounds. Buying Arsenal will cost him at least 350-400m pounds.

Assuming he doesn't saddle the club with debt like the Glazers have, I don't think he is going to blow half his entire fortune on the club and then start throwing in extra cash for transfers.

You never know with the Arsenal. Each of the last two times that Man United splashed out on big players (Van Nistelrooy, Veron) it was Arsenal show came back stronger. And don't forget that in the unbeaten season, Arsene Wenger only spent 1m on Lehmann and 500k on Clichy. The basis is there, but there needs to be one big player in, and it's most needed on the wing.

As for Madrid, if they're planning to hang on to Robinho, the smartest thing that they can do is buy Diego as well. Diego-Gago-Diarra is a very good midfield trio, assuming that Gago can mix it up a bit more and throw in a bit more running. De Rossi would be perfect for them though.

great deal. anderson, as ronaldinho gaucho, is just another ex grêmio [my beloved team] talented soccer. very skilled man that leaves porto to be sucess at english footbal, for sure. manchester didnt have ronaldinho a couple of years ago but can count with anderson now. pretty cool

I'm probably the only one here who is saying this. I don't think Anderson will make that much of an impact. I think his arrival and performances are over hyped. He was good at the start of the season but by no means amazing. I have hunch his tenure at United will be underhwhelming at best.

SM I don't think DeRossi is going anywhere. He is a Romanista, thru and thru.

Regarding Kroenke he has built his career on sports and sports management. Maybe he is not the answer. But how long will Arsenal players and fans tolerate growing pains and not being in the top 2?

1 more year, 2 maximum. Wenger will walk if he has not won anything by then, he is not stupid. Then the board will have to re-evaluate. Kroenke has built his career on property development related to the sports teams that he buys.

It is one thing to just buy a "franchise" and operate with a salary cap and a team, it's entirely another thing to buy an historic club, deal with salaries, youth development, academies, multiple competitions, transfer fees and so on. He's not rich enough, that's all.
