The Blessing in Disguise

Friday, 06 February 09, 12:00 PM

Great game in Torino on Wednesday night, 1st half kind of even, 2nd half mostly Napoli. They probably should have scored in the 81st minute  or the 82nd or the 83rd. they had 3 wonderful chances by Ezequiel Lavezzi who was the best player on the pitch, Marcelo Zalayeta and Walter Gargano. and Juve goalkeeper Maninger made 2 good saves on what could have won the game for Napoli.

Nicolas Navarro, did all he could in the 1st half to keep the score even at 0-0, stopping Pavel Nedved and Alex Del Piero with Juve's only real chances of the half Del Piero
actually put the ball past Navarro but the linesman had his flag up.

In the 2nd half Napoli dominated and again Juve almost scored on a goal by Davide Trezeguet, which again in the 90th minute was called offside. so on we went to extra time.

Here comes Pope Alex again, this time puts the ball past Navarro with his hand, no goal. by this time, everyone is looking towards the ultimate resolution Penalty Kicks. But
before all that chaos, Napoli has 1 last chance to win when in the 110th minute, Lavezzi has the whole net to put it past Maninger and shoots just off the crossbar.

I blame this loss on coach Reja, why? 3 reasons.

1- WHY wait until the 100th minute to have German Denis replace Zalayeta, who up until then hadn't had all that good of a game.

2- Why is Mateo Contini taking the 5th penalty instead of Christian Maggio or Paolo Cannavaro?

3- The order of PK Takers should have been 1-HAMSIK 2-Bogliacino 3-Denis 4- Maggio 5-Lavezzi

At 3-2 up after the first 3 kicks, if Maggio is there and scores Napoli wins. and we never even get to Lavezzi
or Gargano for that matter. Navarro made 2 saves on the 1st 4 kicks, Napoli should have won. but i'm glad they didn't. Why? because now they can concentrate only on league play, while 2 of those currrently top 3 teams are still occupied in both
Champions League and Coppa Italia.

Remember, Napoli's objective is to reach Europe top 7 spots make Europe, if either Inter or Juve win Coppa Italia that Opens the 8th spot in  Europe. Personally, I'd like to see Napoli
reach Champions League, but in order for that to happen, the  Azzurri Partenopei (neapolitan Blues) have to get the train back on track.
If that doesn't Happen, I make a
personal appeal to President Aurelio De Laurentis, SACK COACH REJA, (as you wanted to do 2 years ago) and BRING IN ROBERTO MANCINI.

After the game Both Napoli and Juve departed for Sicily, Juve is in Catania, on Sunday afternoon while Napoli goes to Palermo Sunday night.

Goalkeeper Luca Bucci has joined the Napoli group Bucci has had a long career and was Parma's keeper during their glory days and then played for Torino, before returning to Parma where he played until last season. Bucci also played with the National team, he was the backup to Gianluca Pagliuca at USA 94 and recieved a silver medal. (should have been gold if not for Roberto Baggio) also on a personal level, Congratulations to President De Laurentis, on the Birth of his 1st grandson John on Tuesday. His Daughter Valentina gave Birth to the 7-lb 10-0z boy. that's right his name is John, NOT Giovanni.

By the way Napoli returns to Torino to play Juve on the 28th of February. they won't have to play 120 minutes or go to penalties then. Watch out Bianconeri.

Headlines, Juventus Lose Second To Cagliari and Napoli - Udinese

Sunday, 01 February 09, 01:34 AM

Match Day 22: Juventus Lose Second To Cagliari

1/31/09 by: Special K

Oh dear Juventus is faltering. The Bianconeri squandered all the good results they have achieved during the month of January after closing the gap between themselves and Inter to 3 points. Today's disappointing 2-3 result to Cagliari on home turf is the second loss for Juventus striker Del Piero (pictured/Reuters) and company while front runners Internazionale have righted their ship, winning the last two against Catania and Sampdoria. Tomorrow the Milan club plays lowly Torino who are currently in a tailspin and should have no problem in stretching their lead to 9 points. Torino having not won in the last 4 Serie A outings must look as far back as December 21, and their home defeat of Napoli for any consolation.

Note: Cagliari (away record, 3-2-6) have now won 2 on the road beating Lazio last week at the Stadio Olimpico 4-1, prior to that win the club had only one additional victory away from home at Torino back in October.

Juventus vs Cagliari Highlights

In other news stunned Napoli gave up a 2-0 lead after home sons Antonio Di Natale and Fabio Quagliarella helped to equalize for the visitors giving Udinese the 2-2 draw. (Both players come from the Naple region)

1/31/09 by: Gene

The San Paolo hosted a great game on Saturday evening, Napoli was punished by two Neapolitan players who play for Udinese, Antonio Di Natale and Fabio Quagliarella.

Napoli took a 2-0 lead in the first 27 minutes of the game on goals by Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik. Hamsik returned after missing two games because of the suspension he received after his red card in Verona.

In the 24th minute , German Denis took the ball at the midfield circle and carried it to kist outside the Udinese penalty area before passing to Lavezzi who whistled a shot past Andonovich 1-0 Napoli.

Just three minutes later Hamsik put a header past  Andonovich  off a free kick from Walter Gargano 2-0 Napoli.

But Udinese would answer when in the 31st minute, Paolo Cannavaro chased a ball in the Napoli area, but in the process tripped Isla, Gervasoni gave the penalty, Di Natale converted, 2-1.

In the 38th minute Lavezzi was tripped in the area by Isla but Gervasoni did not give the penalty, instead giving Napoli a corner kick.

Then in the 45th minute Fabio Quagliarella scored what I consider the prettiest goal of the Serie A season so far. On a pass by Isla he turned and shot from just outside the box, beating Navarro 2-2.

Watch Quagliarella's goal

The second half Napoli attacked consistently, Lavezzi had 2 chances Zalayeta one and Hasek another but nothing.

In the 90th minute Udinese almost stole the game on a shot by Giovanni Pasquale that went just past the post.

Before the game, Napoli announced the acquisition of Argentine left winger Jesus Datolo from Boca Juniors. The 24-year old becomes the 4th Argentine on the club this season. He will wear jersey No. 15 and becomes the 8th Argentine to ever play for Napoli.

Napoli now must go to play Juventus in Torino on Wednesday in the Coppa Italia quarter final. Winner will play Lazio in one semifinal, the other semifinal features Inter and Sampdoria.

Saturday Headlines

  • Jozy Altidore will spend the rest of the season at Spanish second division side Xerez.
  • Roma have signed defender Souleymane Diamoutene from Lecce. AS Roma
  • Jonathan Soriano joins Albacete on loan from Espanyol. RCD Espanyol
  • Luis Fabiano is going to miss at least three weeks with a strained his left knee.

Questions of the week

Tuesday, 16 December 08, 03:28 PM

1. Vicente del Bosque, new Spain coach does not rule out the return of Real Madrid's Raul to NT. Do you think, on current form that he deserves the role instead of Villa or Torres on their current form?

2. Should Amauri play for Italy or Brazil?
