Spain 0, United States 2 (FIFA Confederations Cup Semi-Final 1)

I won't even attempt to write an objective post, I'm delighted, so delighted that I could pee on myself. I might yet end up doing that.

The American team made it known from the kickoff that they didn't fear Spain, and despite the circumstances surrounding their advancement to the semi-finals they felt that they were there as of a right, and not because of luck.

Spain did press the Americans hard several times and through a combination of amazing goalkeeping from Tim Howard, and superb defending by twin pillars Jay DeMerit and Oguchi Onyewu, the US defense did enough long enough to allow their attackers to pounce up the left hand side with a slick move that ended with Jozy Altidore driving the ball into the net after using his power to shrug off a Spanish defender. Rightly, Iker Casillas was furious with his defense who were being cut open by an unheralded side.

Things got very dicey for the Americans towards the end of the first half, Spain came close on several occasions only to be denied time after time by the amazing Howard.

The second half started as the first one had ended with Spain relentless on the attack, but looking open to a counterattack should the USA manage one, and they did. Substitute Benny Feilhaber was involved in a move that saw Landon Donovan set up Clint Dempsey to realistically put the game beyond Spain.

At this point the US seemed content to defend and only really ventured forward to allow Conor Casey to hold up play and work the clock. Despite having midfield dynamo Michael Bradley sent off, the US did enough to hold on and claim what is surely one of the biggest upsets in international history.

South Africa will be hoping to top that tomorrow.

The only thing that could make me happier is if the Governor of South Carolina did something to make himself look like a jackass. Oh, wait!

tim howard is the only american worth a lick of salt.

luck is on usa side, both goals, off ikers hands off the post and in, please. Sergio's gift... no mames!

Spain is back under performing like always... I knew spain would choke just like their mexican brothers.

Usa defended well, the whole team in the box works.... alot of heart, talent not really. but yes i do give them credit.. the comebacks, the italian choke job that hepled them qualify.

to the usa fans... alot of work is still needed until the world respects them.

any team can will any given day in this sport.

That's funny, izach19.

Allez, USA! Let's hope it's not Brazil. So in that case, let's go, SA, too! Woot!

it is always an enormous dissapointment to me when i see a superb team fall to a mediocre bunch of men.
spain completely outclasses the usa in every aspect but unfortunately by some freak accident, the usa came through

a sad day for football...

Considering that our league, the MLS has only been around for about 15 years or something...and some of the guys who play on the national team play in other leagues, like EPL, etc...I think our boys have a lot to be proud of. No one, including the team, expected them to make it this far...why are you Mexican supporters such haters?? Can't you look at it as the top 2 teams in this particular tournament have wound up being from North and South America?

i got nothing against the USA, the USA fields at times 4 mexicans players.

I dislike stupid USA Fans... why werent the USA fans posting about the blow-outs they loss. Huh?

Everyone at work is talking smack to me, since my famiy hail from Iberia peninsula, and the people who are talkin are NOT even Soccer fans. But bandwagoners!

my question to you is why are USA Fans so racist and shit talkers? what's gayxico?

over 120 million mexicans.. it show we like to populate. I never insulted the USA!

I never bought up mexico but to explain that Espana is a underachiever like Mexico. In Espana, Spaniards before the Euro would mock their own team, just like mexicans due in mexico bout its own team.

I really had a hard time prior to the Spain - USA game because my favorite international team is Spain. I live in the USA and have always been a USA citizen but I adore the beautiful way that Spain plays the game. I like Liverpool because of all their Spanish players and I love Barca too. They have a style that is the true game of football. The USA used its strength in that game, had some luck that they could take advantage of and went up against an "off" Spain team. That happens in tournaments like this one. As soon as the game got going I was rooting for the USA out of nationalism, but I would not have been surprised or upset if Spain had won...and I would have loved to see a match-up of Spain and Brazil. I think the USA needed that victory more than Spain did...to prepare them mentally for the World Cup...so good for them.
