Chelsea went from big favourites to win the league this season to a mere spectator of the Liverpool/Manchester United battle. The decision of letting Scolari go could've been precipitated and the signing of Guus Hiddink came too late. However Chelsea is now the only team with chances to clich the three major trophies this season: Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. But at the same time they have good chances to finish completely empty handed.

Tonight's match can be called a rehearsal for the FA Cup final and I'm sure Everton want to take this rehearsal quite seriously. It's the Toffees great opportunity to pass Aston Villa and take the 5th place on the table; not that they will have time to put up a fight for Arsenal's spot in the Champions League.

Everton have not won at Stamford Bridge in the last 13 Premier League matches and Chelsea have not lost to Everton in 21 matches in all competitions. Could that change tonight?

GOBSMACK PREDICTION:  Chelsea come out with a narrow win tonight, 2-1

Rafa puts pen to paper and completes a week to remember (by Mark Apostolou)

Friday, 20 March 09, 10:49 AM

Could there be a better way for Liverpool fans to cap off a great week than seeing their boss finally put pen to paper on a deal that keeps him at the club until 2014, well there could be but it might not be legal!

Rafa BenitezRafa has clearly won the clash of the titans and come out on top after an at times bitter power struggle at Anfield which has left Chief Executive Rick Parry heading for the exit but still leaves the Spaniard having to deal with Messrs Hicks and Gillett who are still not the best of buddies.

Annihilating both Real Madrid and Man United in the space of days must have left Benitez in a good mood and the 48 year old has now committed his immediate future at the club. This news should at least allay some of the rumour mongering journalists from yet again linking him to the as yet not-vacant spot at the Bernabeu (by the way people should realise that Juande Ramos, 4-0 Scouse drubbing aside, has done a pretty good job at the La Liga champions).

Mr. Benitez has done a steady job at the Merseyside outfit since taking over from Gérard Houllier in June 2004 and he did of course bring them the Champions League title in his first season, and boy what a way to do it, but clearly he longs for the Premier League crown which is still within reach this term.

The club has proved it is at its when in European competition, evidence that former Valencia manager tactical genius is at its most effective when battling teams on the continent. Now the fans will be hoping that the club can push on from this announcement and look to strengthen its domestic form and challenge the all dominant Man United side that Sir Alex has honed.

One of the biggest stumbling blocks to the gaffer's desire to sign a long term deal at the club was that he wanted to be fully in control of every aspect of the management game, most notably he wanted total control of the purchasing of new players. Now those in the England would consider this to be part and parcel of the management portfolio but of course elsewhere this job has been handed down to ‘Director's of Football' or such like, Rafa Benitez quite rightly wanted to redress this imbalance not least because he had seen Rick Parry ‘Mastermind' the signing of Robbie Keane, a player Rafa never wanted. Harry Redknapp had a similar problem when he took over at Spurs, he too wanted to do business the old fashioned way and quickly removed those in positions that in effect undermined the job he would do at the club.

Liverpool fans will be hopeful that this deal will further cement the club on the road to recovery. A road that has left the club without the treasured possession of a league title in 19 years, a length of time made all the more unbelievable when coupled with the clubs rich history. This week will live long in the supporters memories and when all is said and done the contract that has been signed will in effect give a far more longer lasting feeling of pleasure to those who follow the club than the two fantastic victories achieved.

Premier League Match Preview: Liverpool v. Chelsea

Thursday, 29 January 09, 12:02 PM

Live coverage of the Liverpool vs. Chelsea match on, Sunday, 1 February, 2009. Live commentary and blogging, live score, match result, match review. Catch all the action when the Reds host the Blues at Anfield. English Premier League 2008-2009. Chat and discuss the match live with other fans on OleOle. CLICK HERE TO ACCESS THE MATCH CENTRE.

The match of the season! A draw could mean suicide for both teams and a win will represent a chance to fight for the title against Man Utd. But in my opinion whoever loses this match can start waving the Premiership title goodbye. The only problem is that Chelsea now is playing the same boring football of last yea (and the years before) and Liverpool's offense is not working as expected and the Reds already have drawn 9 matches this season.

GOBSMACK PREDICTION:Chelsea will come on top 3-2

Premier League Match Preview: Newcastle v. Sunderland

Thursday, 29 January 09, 11:55 AM

Live coverage of the Newcastle United vs. Sunderland match on, Sunday, 1 February, 2009. Live commentary and blogging, live score, match result, match review. Catch all the action when the Magpies host the Black Cats at St. James' Park. English Premier League 2008-2009. Chat and discuss the match live with other fans on OleOle. A black cloud is stuck over Newcastle. The Magpies not only lost the match to Man City on Wednesday night but also saw Joey Barton and Michael Owen leave the pitch injured. Their opponents for the weekend match are Sunderland and the Black Cats are only three points ahead of them. For both teams this is a very important match.

GOBSMACK PREDICTION: Tough one to predict but I'd say Sunderland win 2-0

Premier League Match Preview: Middlesbrough v. Blackburn Rovers

Thursday, 29 January 09, 11:52 AM

Live coverage of the Middlesbrough vs. Blackburn match on, Saturday, 31 January, 2009. Live commentary and blogging, live score, match result, match review. Catch all the action when Boro host the Rovers at the Riverside Stadium. English Premier League 2008-2009. Chat and discuss the match live with other fans on OleOle. What on bloody earth is going on at the Riverside? Boro had a good run until early November when they beat Arsenal and since then the team took a fast elevator down to the underground. no wins in the last 11 matches (4 draws and 7 losses) and Middlesbrough is now at the relegation. This match against the Rovers is crucial and a win can invert postitions with Blackburn who is only one point ahead of Boro.

GOBSMACK PREDICTION:Boro finally get a win, 2-1

Premier League Match Preview: Manchester United v. Everton

Man U calmly waited for Chelsea and Liverpool to fall in their own mistakes and before one spell Cristiano Ronaldo's favourite hair gel brand the Red Devils jumped to the top of the table. This Saturday Everton will try to upset Man United at Old Trafford. It seems improbable but it could happen. The Toffees have been a solid and consistent team this season and even though they're 10 points away from reaching the top 4 they can already see Arsenal only 5 points ahead of them.

GOBSMACK PREDICTION: Man United get another win 2-1

Premier League Match Preview: Hull City v. West Brom

Thursday, 29 January 09, 10:49 AM

Live coverage of the Hull City vs. West Brom Albion match on, Saturday, 31 January, 2009. Live commentary and blogging, live score, match result, match review. Catch all the action when the Tigers host the Baggies at the KC Stadium. English Premier League 2008-2009. Chat and discuss the match live with other fans on OleOle. This former Championship battle now happens in a much different situation than it used to be. Hull City had a fantastic run in the beginning of their Premiership debut but West Brom didn't prove that they deserved to be there from the start. The Tigers seem to have lost their momentum but it's more than a matter of honour to beat WBA at the KC Stadium.

GOBSMACK PREDICTION: The Tigers win 3-0

Premier League Match Preview: Fulham v. Portsmouth

Live coverage of the Fulham vs. Portsmouth match on, Saturday, 31 January, 2009. Live commentary and blogging, live score, match result, match review. Catch all the action when the Cottagers host Pompey at the Craven Cottage. English Premier League 2008-2009. Chat and discuss the match live with other fans on OleOle. The Cottagers will host the boring Pompey at the Craven Cottage with a good chance to clinch three important points. Pompey on the other hand could fall to the relegation zone with a defeat. Well, not a very interesting match but I'll just say that I'm tired of commenting on Portsmouth's lack of good football. If they go to the Championship no one will even notice their disappearance from the Premiership.

GOBSMACK PREDICTION: Fulham win2-1

None of these teams are candidates to title but this match is set to be one of the most important in the clubs aspirations this season. Both teams are leveled with 24 points but could dangerously fall to the relegation zone with a defeat this Saturday. The Trotters come from a draw with Blackburn and the Spurs got a great win over Stoke City with Defoe scoring again.

GOBSMACK PREDICTION: Defoe and modric will lead  "Tottingham" to another win 2-0
