Rafa puts pen to paper and completes a week to remember (by Mark Apostolou)

Friday, 20 March 09, 10:49 AM

Could there be a better way for Liverpool fans to cap off a great week than seeing their boss finally put pen to paper on a deal that keeps him at the club until 2014, well there could be but it might not be legal!

Rafa BenitezRafa has clearly won the clash of the titans and come out on top after an at times bitter power struggle at Anfield which has left Chief Executive Rick Parry heading for the exit but still leaves the Spaniard having to deal with Messrs Hicks and Gillett who are still not the best of buddies.

Annihilating both Real Madrid and Man United in the space of days must have left Benitez in a good mood and the 48 year old has now committed his immediate future at the club. This news should at least allay some of the rumour mongering journalists from yet again linking him to the as yet not-vacant spot at the Bernabeu (by the way people should realise that Juande Ramos, 4-0 Scouse drubbing aside, has done a pretty good job at the La Liga champions).

Mr. Benitez has done a steady job at the Merseyside outfit since taking over from Gérard Houllier in June 2004 and he did of course bring them the Champions League title in his first season, and boy what a way to do it, but clearly he longs for the Premier League crown which is still within reach this term.

The club has proved it is at its when in European competition, evidence that former Valencia manager tactical genius is at its most effective when battling teams on the continent. Now the fans will be hoping that the club can push on from this announcement and look to strengthen its domestic form and challenge the all dominant Man United side that Sir Alex has honed.

One of the biggest stumbling blocks to the gaffer's desire to sign a long term deal at the club was that he wanted to be fully in control of every aspect of the management game, most notably he wanted total control of the purchasing of new players. Now those in the England would consider this to be part and parcel of the management portfolio but of course elsewhere this job has been handed down to ‘Director's of Football' or such like, Rafa Benitez quite rightly wanted to redress this imbalance not least because he had seen Rick Parry ‘Mastermind' the signing of Robbie Keane, a player Rafa never wanted. Harry Redknapp had a similar problem when he took over at Spurs, he too wanted to do business the old fashioned way and quickly removed those in positions that in effect undermined the job he would do at the club.

Liverpool fans will be hopeful that this deal will further cement the club on the road to recovery. A road that has left the club without the treasured possession of a league title in 19 years, a length of time made all the more unbelievable when coupled with the clubs rich history. This week will live long in the supporters memories and when all is said and done the contract that has been signed will in effect give a far more longer lasting feeling of pleasure to those who follow the club than the two fantastic victories achieved.

Transfer Rumours - Cristiano Ronaldo, Andrei Asharvin, David Villa, Ashley Young, Karim Benzema and others

Tuesday, 30 December 08, 10:58 AM

Transfer rumours linking Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid! Well, but that is not new. Andrey Arshavin could be going to Arsenal? Chelsea have eyes on Sevilla's frontman Luis Fabiano? Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona fighting to sign Ashley Young? Gossip, Transfer rumours and more gossip... Yes, this is the 2009 Winter Transfer. So let's now see with America's geniuses of idioticity Paris Hilton and George Bush WHAT'S HOT and WHAT'S BOLLOCKS. (Just because they certainly understand nothing about footie)

1.
Cristiano Ronaldo Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid - Yes, once again there are talkings about the Manchester United's winger and recently named Best Footballer in the world going to the Santiago Bernabeu but I haven't heard a thing from the Spanish club in the past weeks about signing the portuguese, most of the talks come from Ronaldo himself.

Bush says: Bollocks. bush

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2.Andrei Arshavin Andrey Arshavin to Arsenal - He almost went to the Spurs in the summer but ened up staying with Zenit for another six months but now the necessity of quality players has put Arsenal as at the top spot of the race to swoop the Russian talent.

Paris says: That's hot.paris

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.Karim Benzema Karim Benzema to Real Madrid - The rumour is hot but it might have to wait until next summer. Benzema himself already stated that he dreams of playing for the Spanish club however Real Madrid directors tend to be interested in every sinlge player in Europe and with the acquisitions of Huntelaar and Diarra and all the other rumours surrounding the club we might have to wait to see Benzema landing there. If Roma decides to sign the injured Ruud Van Nilsteroy than Benzema's move to Satiago Bernabeu could happen earlier.

Not too hot but not simply bollocks either bush paris

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.
Ashley Young Ashley Young to Real Madrid or Barcelona - Not quite happening. Aston Villa want to secure the lad at least until the end of the season and priced the 23-year old with modest £30m which forced most interested clubs to back up.

Bush says: Bollocks bush

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5.David Villa David Villa to Manchester City - After Robinho accepting the millions offered by City to leave Champions League habitué Real Madrid to join a club that flirts with the relegation zone everything is possible. As they say, everyone has a price and the £60 million offered to almost bankrupt Valencia is quite tempting.

Paris insists on saying: That's hot.paris

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now for other transfer rumours and I'll leave it to you to tell me if it's hot or just

Luis Fabiano - from Sevilla to Chelsea
Adriano - from Inter Milan to Chelsea
Michael Owen - from Newcastle to Manchester City
Jermain Defoe - from Portsmouth to Aston Villa
Jimmy Bullard - from Fulham to Totteham Hotspur

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And where will this lads go? Or, will they go anywhere at all?

Roque Santa Cruz
- from Blackburn to ?
Michael Turner - from Hull City to ?
Craig Bellamy - from West Ham to ?
Kieran Richardson - from Sunderland to ?
Stewart Downing - from Middlesbrough to ?
