Word just in that the medical of twenty eight year old Ghanian defensive midfielder Stephen Appiah was a success and that the personal terms are agreed.
This could prove to be a very, very clever signing. Ultimately, of course, this will rest with the player, but you cannot knock the thinking behind his aquisition. So, as they say at Grace Brothers, 'well done everybody, you 've all done awfully well'.
There will be a question mark over his knee - not to mention his clothing line, 'StepApp', but if he can remain fit his pedigree is far less questionable.
My source is good, but not on the red tape outside The Lane, so I cannot tell you if he'll start on Sunday.
He comes on a free, so that should buy him approximately a few million quid's worth more time than Bentley got.

That is wonderful if true, cheers Harry, might be a good weekend after all
Any news on squad numbers? Any news on the numbers of squid. What about the number of quid it takes to raise quads?
Could be good, could be Nicola Berti... remember him! I hope its true though, because as we've proved with Woodgate, it is worth the risk.
COYS
ps. Jamie O'Hara... won't have a word said against.
"Bentley got"
Do I read too much into the use of the past perfect?
Doubt we`ll see him playing anytime soon, the last games he played were in turkey months ago, so He`ll need some time to regain fitness. But still, could turn out to be one of the best frees of all time.
Will he be available to play sunday do you know Harry??
Brilliant news if he has come in...and will make more sense given if Arry goes 442 or 41212 with DM being the pivot.
Also will keep Zako on his toes and fight for a spot...not much competition given the closest thing to a DM in our squad is Hudd - and his movement and agility is terrible (although improved dramatically with fitness and weight loss over last yr).
Any news HH on possible left winger/wing back? We do need to balance the team out...i think with this signing and defoe, and 2 more we could hopefully have an improved squad to claw our way out of the relegation battle
Why would anyone have a question mark on their knee? I know you get odd tatoos but this seems just silly. I now know you are talking cobblers!
Reply to Dick Sratcher:
Ha, and there was me fretting over my spelling
Richard, don't believe DB is going anywhere anytime soon.
Geddit?
*shuffles off, silently*
If his knee holds he could be a very influential signing in that he will bring some muscle where we have lacked it for years...in midfield. Who will be surplus in the Premiership matches for us, Jenas or Zokora? Rumours of Finnan, Hunt and Shorey making it to us next week have also been floating around. I would welcome them and would not have thought of Kenwyne Jones as an addition to our frontline but the more I think about it the better as he has bags of abilty and strength. Overall the players mentioned have physical strength in common which is a good thing!
Just seen the interview with Spanish Peter Kay talking about "Mr Ferguson". Wow...I dont like Rafa generally but that was legend! Cant quite decide if it is a high level of mind games or another Kevin Keegan "love it" moment, but it sure was entertaining. Mr Ferguson the balls in your court
Reply to Sid Trotter:
You clearly lack a working knowledge of certain, 'Ghanian Parlours'

We needed more muscle and Harry bags a t1000 terminator

Just wandering how true ure source is because i'm getting told tht he is not going to sign till start of next week. So is this information true, if so why is it not on the offical site yet??
Reply to Slimo:
I think he's been out too long, mate, so I'm sceptical...
When we were linked with Dos Santos, I, as I'm sure did many, watched numerous 'best of' vids. What seems to be overlooked, is that throughout his time at Barcelona B, he was played as a left winger, and a damn sweet crosser of the ball. All of the clips confirm this...dribble, dribble, trick, dribble, cross. Lovely.
I doubt he starts this week. Is he even fully fit enough to go the full 90?
cant start if he aint signed can he? silly questions and would u wanna start a fella whos hardly played a game of footie in a year? he missed the af nations with this injury and how long ago was that?
Another member of the brethren reminded me today what a loss Carrick was and in particular the many early balls he would give to Azza blud. Didier does a lot of things well but distribution ain't one of them so I'm hoping Appiah's passing is as good as his shooting.

joy oh joy oh joy oh joy!
Finally a PROPER CDM with champions league experience & not to mention Captain of his country at a world cup. I have been banging on about Stephen Appiah for ages now and why we didn't sign him sooner is beyond me. If he stays fit we've got a world class player in the middle of the park.
I only hope that now we have Appiah available that we will see less of Zokora and his willing yet unproductive performances. Alot can be said for Zokora's effort but unless it can be allied with an end product its useless. From what I've seen and read of Stephen Appiah I am sure that he'll be a fantastic and long needed addition to our squad.

I fell off my chair!!!
lets hope he doesn't go the way of bentley or due to his nationality we'll have songs by radiohead ringing around the lane.
By that I mean that cheery ditty "blame it on the black star" from the bends album.

Reply to Aussie Yid Dan:
Aussie I like the sound of 41212 but that will make us very narrow and will not have a place for left winger.
Reply to HarryHotspur:
He may have to wait for a work permit as well.
His finishing seems much better than that of Zokora, LINK
Hope it's true sooooo need a player of his type,i just think for how long us spurs fans have been talking about the players we need(left wing,DM,centre back) and harry comes in and does it straight away. What were the they doing before!
Reply to Billy Lane:
Billy, you ask nicely so I shall, in turn, respond with niceness.
My guy tells me it's done.
I pass on in good faith. What can I do?
I have been crucified for having the audacity to announce transfers early. Troll my archive.
I cannot legislate for info going sour, who can? Equally nor will I apologise for my response time being better than the official site.
May I just ask you give me a break and if it isn't officially announced in seven days them come back and remind me how bad my source was.
Reply to spurssandy:
He was obviously pleased to see you
Reply to HarryHotspur:
And another thing - I never said it was officially done.
Not having a dig, mate, but two bob blogs like this a read for a reason. Official sites for another. No?

I'd be very excited to see Appiah as a Yid. Here's hopin'!
Reply to TheSchoolboy:
I don't remember complaining about boobies? I have two myself.
Reply to TheSchoolboy:
the video has dated a bit..!!
This guy's got serious talent so if this does indeed go through it's great news. However it would be nice if we could pick up someone like Miguel Veloso as a more long-term option. Edgar Davids did a great job for us one season but then looked over the hill the next so his age could be a problem.
Any news on N'Zogbia Harry?
have heard alot of very good things about this guy over the years but wont pretend i know his game all that well,i checked him out on youtube(stephan appiah-great video)and was very impressed with what i saw,not sure how old the clips are but he sure looks a player, for a defensive midfielder he sure aint scared to have a shot and looks an impressive figure to battle in the middle, hope we have found a bit of a gem if he stays fit.

The geezer is about 3/4 years younger than when Davids signed.
Can't wait to see him in action. Let's hope he settles straight in.
3 to 4 not 3 quarters, that would be pedantic.
it is good news about appiah....if and when....should help out the midfield a bit....i seriously doubt he'e up to starting in the prem just yet though....away at burnley should be a good place to start.....
if we didn't sign anymore.....bale,o'hara and dos santos should be able to fiddle about in leftfield you would of thought till the end of season....coys
Can you imagine a fit Appiah + Modders in CM?
Reply to KOJAC:
I thank you
Reply to TMWNN:
Yeh fair enough but injury worries + age = twilight of career. As long as he's got a few good ones left in him tho I'm happy as a pig in sh*t. Now all we need is someone with a good left foot (apart from downing), maybe another striker (Podolski would be fantastic!) and we're laughing.
Reply to HarryHotspur:
Some witches are white... as are their hats one assumes.
p.s. accidentally read 'lamblasted' as lamb-lasted... been reading too many articles on Downing...
Reply to spurssandy:
Good, but why red and white?
Witches hat? I would've said wizards sleeve.
So for sh*ts and giggles and presuming Appiah and Downing sign (or another left player) I think we quite possibly have our strongest squad in years.
Gomes
Corluka King Woodgate Bale
Appiah
Bentley Modric Downing*
Pavulchenko Defoe
2nd Team:
Cesar
Hutton Dawson Gunter Ekotto
Zokora
Lennon Jenas O'hara
Bent Dos Santos
Others :
Huddlestone
Boetang
Taarbart
Ghaly
Gilberto
Campbell
Rocha
Now, I'd quite happily see all of the "others" move on except for Hudd whom I really rate and will defo get alot of 1st team action.
Also, I wouldnt lose any sleep over Jenas, Ekotto, Zokora, Bent disappearing
The question is "Can we now become a force?"
(please, please, please, please can we !)
Reply to jamiespurs:
I haven't seen this guy. Is he really a defensive midfielder? However, it doesn't matter, he knows where the goal is so as long as he doesn't walk with stick he can have Zokora's place.
Reply to breadbin:
Using this season as a form guide, on what possible basis could you chose Bentley over Lennon or Bale over Ekotto?
Appiah will be CDM.
Taxi for Mr. Zokora?
Or will he stay and compete for his dream role as star striker?
Stay tuned...
Super smashing lovely. A hard Tottenham? Yes please. Tottenham with teeth. And beauty. Yes. Beautiful teeth.
Reply to breadbin:
This is a good team on paper but the REAL question is "can they play well together?". So far this season there have been too many matches in which the players look like they've never even met before.
Form, too, is important to consider. Bentley couldn't get into the Burnley side on his merits for spurs so far.
I've always liked 'Arry and hopefully he can get the best out of these players but a few more signings are necessary for, as Redshnapps himself puts it "the balance" to be restored.
'Arry's 'appy and Stephen's Appiah.
Reply to TMWNN:
They didn't have blue and white
I call it ironic...
When 'arry took over at Spurs, my Liverpool mate reckoned that was the end for Spurs' tradition of (at least aiming for) beautiful football... Personally, I'd love to see the likes of Appiah playing hard footy, for Spurs to become synonymous with takin' no shit and scarin' the opposition into wobbly jellies.
Reply to HarryHotspur:
It's not the past perfect (had got), it's the past simple.
Carry on.
Reply to Another New Coach:
on the basis that somebody has to play ... beit bentley or Lennon , Bale or Ekotto my point was the strenght of the squad ..i'll let Harry decide who should start
and imo , bale will have a much more successful career than Ekotto...just give him time....bentley/Lennon could go either way
Reply to breadbin:
nice ideas breadbin....but i'd go with more of this...if we are dreaming they play well

When was the last time Spurs played Spurs style of football? I missed 3 games in the last 26 years and still havent Spurs playing alleged Spurs style of football since the days of Hoddle and Ossie etc.
Reply to OLLIEyid:
Completely different situation Ollie. Beckham was training with the scum to keep fit in the off-season coz MLS holidays are longer than a wise Kung-Fu master's white moustache. It's the same reason he's on loan to A.C. Milan at the moment if I'm not mistaken.
Appiah on the other hand is (or was) on trial with us to prove his fitness with view to giving him a full contract.
i think appiah will be fab, we need someone like him who can stop the game and let us play the nice football we like to see at white hart lane....... i think HARRY should give giovanni a go on the left wing and then maybe get some one in the summer if needs be!!!

I think Tottenham football equates to good football. It didn't end with Burkinshaw it continued with players like Gazza, Teddy, Ginola and dare I mention him the Berb. Lets face it over the last couple of seasons we've played some brilliant football and had two of our highest scoring seasons in years.
In fact I think our problem at the moment is not a shortage of cultured footballers, more a shortage of iron men like Woody and Corluka.
If Appiah is half as good as Arry thinks he is he'll make a hell of a difference.
Appiah. Is. Not. A. Defensive. Midfielder.
Thank you.

PLEASE LEAVE ZOKORA ALONE!!! This guy has busted his lungs for the team and single handedly been the only player genuine midfield tackler and UTILITY player when all goes pear shaped!
Without Zokora, we would be at the base of the table. His run produced a goal in the FA Cup against Wigan and he will get better.
Appiah is a good buy and should be able to assist Zokora in the middle allowing the other 2 midfielders and the strikers to concentrate on attacking!
Some morons just who have done nothing for Spurs in their lives other than trouble come here and rant nonsence!
Reply to onedavemackay:
The same evidence that will tell you that Bentley is not a Lineker style fox in the box.
He's not.
He's more of a box to box midfielder... and that description really is as close as you'll get to him being in the same ballpark as a DM.
Wears the number 10 shirt for Ghana, which should tell you enough.
Why do you think the YouTube pop-highlights are of him shooting?
The idea that he's going to sit back and mop up whilst Modric orchestrates play is not an option.
He's honestly not a DM.
I'm not posting this for a churlish forum argument. It's just the truth.
'box to box' you say.
I wonder who he could replace.
Reply to Dougie:
he's right you know. he's more of a CM gattuso style player, will make jenas look like a schoolboy.
Reply to realspur:
Aside from ONE RUN against Wigan in the FA cup the other day what immense match winning or game changing contribution has Zokora made?? He can't shoot, he can't stick in a decent cross, his tackling is weak and his passing is abysmal.
I cannot fault his effort or enthusiasm and yes in recent weeks he has had the odd good game. His inconsistency however means he lurches from the sublime to the ridiculous on a regular basis.
We have been waiting for Didier Zokora to get better since he joined us.
AND in closing to my knowledge....... Zokora has earnt us 0 points this season so you're whole incoherent babbling post defending Zokora is ridiculous as it is foolish.

I'm not gonna back this statement with any footballing evidence or try to prove his greatness by highlighting his many strengths.
I LOVE ZOKORA
I would put him in my Spurs team every week, either in the mid at centre half or full back!
He would be in there!
Deal with it Zokora bashers.

He's certainly a strong player with dominant charcteristics, but I think a lot of people seem to have taken one look at the guy's build having seen little or absolutely nothing of his play and made the assumption that he's a DM.
Regardless, if fit, he could be very useful. As a signing, I'd have thought he was an option rather than a solution.
How about my prefered position for him.........
ALL THE WAY BACK IN THE STANDS!
I'm not saying I hate him. But to say he is LIMITED is an offence to the word itself.
Lets face it..... he really isn't THAT good. His effort is commendable but his talent is very very questionable.
Reply to Dougie:
Having only seen the You Tube footage I'd have to agree.
So he replaces Benny.
Now where is our DM!
His box to box energy can be channeled into a more defensive 'prowling' role in midfield. The guy is highly talented and has a wealth of experience, surely he will be able to carry out any on field task that HR gives him.
Spurssandy, are you going to the game on Sunday?
Wigan's only around the corner from Liverpool isn't it? You can get tickets at the ground for a very reasonable ÂŁ19.50.
If you wear that shirt in this weather, I'm sure you'll stick out from the rest of us in more ways than one.
Reply to TMWNN:
Yep
Usually try for Wigan, Blackburn etc. The cheap ones up north where there's no need to faff with reserving tickets! Shall be on my own though. My mate has a date instead; he's a git. A woman before a football match, tsk tsk.
As for sticking out - I've seen men on the terraces who have bigger tits than me...
I'll be adding to the layers with the woolly Spurs scarf n hat
just watched rafa's sky sports video....brilliant stuff from him....now theres a man who can wrestle the title off chelsea and united...
Martin O'Neill (in The Times) is credited with trying to convince Nicky Shorey to hang in there playing second fiddle to Luke Young in playing as full back!
Methinks it is a sign of Harry Redknapp circling in the background?
Rumour of Finnan (admittedly on scarcely reliable sites)joining us too next week makes for a more pleasing shape to our back line.
Midfield of O' Hara, Modric, Appiah and Lennon still lacks balance and even with the addition of left sided player like Hunt from Reading we still look light in centre?
I trust Harry to get things right with time! He beefed up Portsmouth and seems to have similar ideas for us. Looking forward to the new faces that may arrive.
Nice to have the transfers happening early in the window and things seem far less protracted post Director of Football system.
I know we've already seen Stephen Hunt in the Premier League but just reminded myself what he could offer ~ I caught the second half of Reading v Watford.
He was man of the match (officially). Excellent crosser of the ball. Makes you appreciate just how poor our crossing has been this season. Takes corners from both sides for Reading -- inswingers are particularly dangerous.
Gets back, tackles and is a right feisty little grafter. And has quite scary energy... ran his pants off and looked fresh at the end. They're pushing for promotion so Reading would be extremely reluctant to let him go if we did come in for him.
"more time than bentley got"? he's been playing every game and geting worse. you must be talking geological time harry. fair enough as the average glacier probably travels further than bentley over 90mins. maybe we could sign K2 for left wing.

I took it to mean "more time than Bentley got"... before the fans start getting on his back.

James147 Good to hear positives about Hunt. I rate him highly and don't want to get my hopes up as yet about Reading letting him go. With all the talk about Downing these last few weeks for ÂŁ15 million (ÂŁ9 million too much imo) I have been tormented by hearing that Hunt may be Harry's plan B. Plan A is Hunt by a mile for me! If we got him for ÂŁ8 million it would be a solid solution to the left side saga. (Excuse unintended alliteration!)
Await official news of Appiah...
Reply to gilzean's barber:
that and being an automatic starter
Hi Harry,
Long time reader; first time poster (finally got round to it!)
Cheers for the update on the transfer news, anything else on this supposed slight of hand involving Joe Cole's transfer to the Mighty Yids; or is it a load of Red Top Rubbish???

BTW my Son's called harry; awesome name! Just a coincidence so as not to sound gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that (in keeping with the other Posts PC conversations!)
Reply to Dougie:
Then what's the point of signing him ?
Unless Defoe is going to play on his own we are going to play two up front. Arry trying to buy Downing suggests we will play with two wide men most matches so where would that leave Modders let alone Jenas.
If Appiah is not a defensive midfielder why are we signing him ????
Gomes
Hutton - King - Woodgate - Bale
Huddlestone
Lennon - - Modric - - O'Hara
Defoe - - - Pav
I do not think Appiah is match fit and needs two or three games in the reserves and then on the bench for another couple of games.

Just back from a night out. Of course he's a DM thats what he does, but you know that ODM. He's highly combative, ball winner, great eye for a pass. Whilst he is able to attack, his strengths are being very hard & combatative.

Have to agree with the above. Lets not forget he took out peter cech aswell, not that i want to see that in the game of football,ahem..........

He's well known as one of the top DM's in the world. Lets face it its not a rigid role at all, even that twat down the road, a few years back, Viera used to get well forward at times. Of course i'm right
Even Edgar Davids used to bomb forward in support, DM right... Even Zoks gets forwards. The major part of their role is to get well stuck in when the oppo have the ball & force them into errors in order to gain the ball back. Thus they need an engine & eat the ground up athletisism to get all over the pitch. Then the top ones distribute killer balls. They allow the fancier lightweight players to play by protecting them from the other team by way of blocks & harrying. I feel like an idiot saying all this to one so knowledgeable as you ODM...

Not as good a blog as Harry's but I think it's a fair summary of Appiah. A CDM who scores goals...

Hey Harry, that poll on your blog home page is getting a bit old. We can be pretty sure that John Terry is a dog at this stage.
How about a new one: 'who would we prefer for left wing: Stewart Downing or Stephen Hunt?'
Reply to James147:
don't you mean...
do you want stewart downing at tottenham.....?
NO.....
Not at that price....
This site has been reliable in the past, but I'm not sure about this news.
Harry talked to the media last Monday and said Appiah was training with Spurs for ONE WEEK. That means that two days from not, next Monday, should be when he signs or leaves. That picture fro Sky Sports is just an image of him training with us, doesn't mean he has signed.
Harry, we will know if you are right or wrong on Monday. That is the end of his one week training period, and a decision is due to made then.
If you are right, I'll bake you a cake.
If you are wrong, well then....

To me it looked more like the ramblings of a mad man Ferguson's "mind games" had worked perfectly on. Chelsea or United will walk away with it - Liverpool don't have the depth or experience.
To be honest tho as long as the Gooners have nothing to do with it I don't really give a toss.
Just heard N'Zogbia might be talkin with us with the Lane being his preference to Aston Vanilla. Does anyone know if there's any truth in this?

Should I get excited, Harry?
Reply to DoubleVision:
You haven't seen much of Appiah actually playing, then? If at all?
'He's well known as one of the top DM's in the world.'
This will have to be news to the rest of the world, then.
We'll see how that holds up in a year, because that's entirely new to me as well. Everything I've ever watched of him hasn't been to that end. I'd like to see footage to the contrary, even some misleading YouTube pap with EuroPop anthems slapped behind it.
I'd have to say that he's a midfielder, yes... and as regards top-in-the-world, that's something of a stretch... please consider that he's having a kickabout (I'm guessing at WHL since the pitch at the Lodge is frozen) with Spurs in order to find a route back to employment. Admittedly, misleading, since when fit he is a quality player.
He certainly has some of the qualities you describe, but not in spades.
I'm seeing a lot of excitement across the board and a lot of 'expert' opinion on the player and his supposed role/ability and I'm honestly wondering where it's coming from. It's half hope and half speculation based on what I can only guess are first impressions.
I'm really not picking an argument, it's just... some of this is just pure assumption.
'He's well known as one of the top DM's in the world.'
Anyway, regardless, let's not have a bunfight, silly stuff. I never post here or thereabouts, so, honestly wishing you all the best for 2009. Haven't meant to get anyone's back up. This is what I know for sure, and I guess I'll happily respect yours if you feel differently.
It's actually nice to have banter online with Spurs fans where it doesn't descend into playground abuse and vitriol.
Thanks fellas.
Take care.

Thoughtful people like you always welcome. Many many valid points...
Trouble is, I clearly don't need to tell you , that we are so full of 'almost' men in terms of midfielders that even someone like Appiah will be tentatively hailed as a Messiah.
Davids was terrific for a bit and then ALL he did was leave his shoe in. We never replaced him.
We desperately need a presence and hopefully Appiah (when, all being well, is officially signed) will provide that.

606 don't pay enough
Just read this on an English language Turkish news site...
"To recap, Fenerbahçe froze the contract of Ghana international midfielder Appiah in January due to serious concerns over the midfielder's fitness, with the Turkish Soccer Federation (TFF) accepting the Istanbul club's application to do so. Fenerbahçe made the decision with the 27-year-old suffering from a blood clot in his knee which, club doctors said, will sideline him for the remainder of the season. Former Turkey national team doctor, Mehmet Kurdoğlu, who diagnosed Appiah's condition for Fenerbahçe, said: "Treatment will begin immediately to dilute his blood. This will last six months and during this period he shouldn't risk any contact that could cause bleeding to any part of his body."
"Appiah is practicing alone and he is now in Switzerland. He is training in the Lugano Mountains of Switzerland. This location is pretty suitable for him. He is almost fully recovered from his injury."
So it's not really a knee injury (in the King way), more a case of deep vein thrombosis...(like a old lady on the plane to Oz way). Just need to sign him and get him match fit...
Reply to DoubleVision:
The only idiotic thing is you describing me as knowledgeable
I'm not sure what Appiah is classed as, I don't care really. He's strong, combative, energetic, busy, surging, he tackles, he scores, he's everything our central midfield hasn't been for god know how many years.
I tend to try and catch as much of the Afrcan Nations when they are on and following the 2006 World Cup I remember reading that an English manager was interested in him (may have actually have been Arry?) and wondering why, based on what I'd seen of him, others weren't looking at this powerhouse midfielder?
He may not be the same after the injury, he may not be quite up to Prem League fitness but for the sake of no fee and 6 months of inflated wages I sincerely hope we take a chance on this guy. It has the potential to be one of THE best transfer moves in years.
This would be fantastic - has seen him play a few times in the past and he was class!
