Ubiquitous everyman, Arthur Barren Dent. Not my words, but those of Daniel Levy
One invariably decent source of footy info on t'Internet is Alan Nixon. He's not a fortune teller, rather a guy of good intent and one with good connections as they say in horse racing circles.
Anywho, THIS piece in The Mirror today is worth reading.
The crux of it is that our man Levy has unsurprisingly whacked a big price tag on Barren Dent. Somewhere in the region of £18 million of a whack.
And I can see why. For one, it's Levy selling. For two, despite what your average Yid in the street may tell you, the ex Charlton boy scored goals in his stay at The Lane. Some were derided, some where laughed off and a few where downright denied, but they all went in.
Nixon's take is that Arry wants shot in order that he can then in turn get trading himself. Makes nothing but perfect sense to me.
Now, has anyone got Huntelaar's phone number?

Huntelaar won't come to Spurs. Wish he would but I can't see this haapening.
Can't see anyone paying 18Million for Bent either. We may as well keep him.
The same article says we accepted a bid for Huddlestone?
Any truth. Hope not. Rather sell Jenas if we need funds.
First -
Way over priced, we'll be lucky to get over £10m
Correction - Second
I see we've now been linked with a Nigerian striker from Inter Milan at a cost of £6m? Why, will he be any better than what we got? Doubt it. And i dont believe it, merely because we've now been linked with 87 Inter Milan players thsi summer already, as weel as their groundsman, physio, tea lady and program seller. Hell, why not just link us with Mourinho and Moratti???
whats all the crap about us getting points deducted in the mirror and the sun? the spammers are working themselves into a frenzie on the sun blog. surely it'd be portsmouth getting points deducted if anyone as the buying club???
Bent is worth very penny and the Real deals are very much in the offing
Sir, I refer you to my previous statement:
Bent and his 'in off the shin' approach or Huntelaar and this:

Bye Bent.

Thank god for something to read Harry - Newsnow has been a desert this morning. Anyone watch the loric cana video someone posted yesterday? - what an animal! Watched a bit of Cattermole yesterday in U21 - looked OK and not just a stopper but not really convinced he's a major upgrade on OHara or Hudd, both of whom might have been in the team. Really bored with Bent saga - if he is going, I wish a deal would get sorted and we can all move on. I do trust Levy's ability to get a good deal for the club, as long as he doesnt make last summer's mistake of holding out so long for the best possible price and in doing so cause us other problems.
Reply to zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz:
Would you not keep Darren for our important games and use Huntelaar against the likes of Wolves ,hull and Stoke
On the defo thing, it looks like sour grapes from Defoe's former agent trying to stir things up. I think it was stuart peters, spurs agent who did the deal and the question is whether mitchell thomas, who is unlicensed , played any part in it. The red rags are just loking for a story I would say. If anything it would surely be Portsmouth who did anything wrong, not that i know much about these matters. But wouldn't it be right that we get screwed over again after some poor decisoins against us last season which the fa did nothing about.
Hi all, it's me, the REAL Jamiespurs!
In fairness to Darren I wouldn't be adverse to keeping him. BUT if we can get around £15m for him (Sunderland are willing to bid £12m anyway £15m is a nice 'mid-point' between the 2 valuations isn't it?) I'd bite their hand off.
The player I'm most interested to get in is Maxi Rodriguez a goalscoring, goalmaking LW (RW & CF) who's proved he's got what it takes at World Cups, Copa America's, the Champs League and La Liga. Surely a player that would improve us dramatically??
Cana & Cattermole I like the look of. It's pretty obvious that Harry is looking to eradicate the 'soft centre' that we've developed in recent years and Cana looks like a tough tackling CM who I was told will 'put the fear of god into alot of PL players' and Cattermole has played with Wilson before at Wigan and was very successful in doing so.
Huntelaar won't be joining us IMO he'll end up at a side that has CL football. Every summer over recent years we find ourselves saying "Get Huntelaar" and he's never joined!
If he did sign up then I'd be very pleased BUT I just can't see it happening
It wouldn't surprise me if this was just Levy's answer to Sunderland...
'WELLLLLL!!! If you value Kenwyne Jones at £20M......'

ribery 70 million
jones 20 million
barry 12 million (only a year on contract)
pirlo (age 30) 20 million
johnson 18 million
bentley 17 million
keane 20 million
roquesc 17 million
valencia 17 million
zokora 10 million
judging by that lot our dazza has got to be worth 18!! of course not all of the above have happened and the ones that did seem like rather excessive amounts of money - lets hop Sunderland are equally stupid. As I said earlier, I hope that brinkmanship/extracting every last penny from the deal doesnt end up backfiring. We dont want to be buying new players in the second half of August and we have more to lose than Sunderland if the deal doesnt happen - Bent would probably rather go and I cant imagine any other club offering 18m.
I just read this on wickipedia, now he's gotta go,
Quote: "Bent grew up in Tooting, South London, before moving to Cambridgeshire at the age of ten and playing for Godmanchester Rovers.[2][3] As a youngster, Bent was a supporter of Arsenal, and used to have a season-ticket at Highbury.[4] He was handed a formal warning by police in June 2004 after he was alleged to have shot a 12-year old with a pellet gun".
plus 18 goals in 59 appearences isn't a good return for 16million.
If he goes then he will probably 'thrive' at a club where the expectations are lower - although he may score roughly the same amount of half scuffed goals.
It's all perception - you see.
Levy has the misguided perception he can get £18m. If he can then fair play to him, if not then its a decent enough place to start negotiations in an attempt to get some of the cash dollar we paid for him back.

I'd rather Huntelaar's carbon fibre unicycle than Bent's 'Penny Farthing'.

Darren Anderton has just been offered a coaching role at spurs.
Spurs have offered Shevchenko a 2 year deal at £55K a week. Free transfer
The Nocastle boy is in the bag.LINK
I think Bassong would be a good signing, he's quick, powerful, good in the air, He's been tarnished by Newcastle BUT he had to fit ALOT of fires for them last season when all around him were extremely shit. Quite where it leaves King and Dawson though......
Obviously we're going to keep Charlie at RB and have Woody, King/Bassong and BAE at LB
Bent isn't worth £18m but he has improved since he joined us IMO. If Levy gets £10m for Zokora and £15m for Bent I'll be extremely impressed!!
Reply to HarryHotspur:
Happy to get me kit out for him.
Good stuff - we shouldn't be selling off first team players on the cheap on the pretext that they're not the best & then replace them with similar average-to-good players for twice as much.
Hopefully there'll be some movement come July but most of the names being mentionned in connection with us don't really excite me. If we can't get the Huntlaars and Munatris then we may as well make do with what we've got give or take one or two obvious candidates to move on.
Last summers merrygoround doesn't need repeating after all!!
good on levy for upping the transfer fee for benty.why sell benty on the cheap? there is only one spurs player who gives me the pips and its psb coz e never gets benched or dropped...
and e rarely plays as a striker...

Sly Andrew is just pissed off he didn't get his slice of the cake. If defoe had dispensed with his services via the proper notices Sly won't get anywhere but sometimes you have to issue proceedings to convince people to settle a claim however unfounded.
Even if Mitchell Thomas was involved in the deal if he works for Stuart Peters who is accredited there will be no case to answer. The papers as per are bored and need some shit to fill their pages.
They never let the truth get in the way of a outlandish headline especially when it involves a bit of spurs bashing.

We'd probably get more money for Jenas. I like him and Hudd but they are inconsistant and would probably be second choice to Palacios and Modric. They also need to play.
If we sign a left winger, we could have the option of 4-3-3 with Bent in his prefered role of solitary out-and-out striker. That would leave space for Hudd.

Can't get on your wonderful blog during normal working hours and after staring at a computer screen all day I'm loathe to stare at one in the evening!! Hence the use of Dear Mr Levy, even found myself using the Guardian 'rumour mill' articles to intersperse the working day.
Zokora for £10m is a piece of genius work from Levy there, lets hope Sunderland get their pants pulled down in pursuit of building a team made of our offcuts!
IMO £15m for Bent isn't a bad price, he's become a better player since he joined us and he was the highest scoring Englishman in the Premier League last season.
As someone pointed out earlier, Sunderland quoted us £20m for Kenwyne Jones (scorer of about 5 goals last season) so how the f*ck is Bent worth £8m less when he's clearly a better player!
Quinn, Bruce and Ellis Short, YOU'RE HAVING A LAUGH!

Stop arse licking.
Bent and Jones are poles apart as players.
Neither are all that, but we need a battering ram up front, a true target man that can get in amongst it and clear the way for Modric, teh left sided attacker and Lennon/Bentley to run amok.
One that can play football would also be beneficial.
Reply to TMWNN:
We don't need a battering ram we need a tall proven goalscorer who is good in the air and can hold the ball up.
There is no comparison between Huntelaar and Benty or Ken Jones.
Of course not. What you have to compare is: are we more likely to get KJ or KJH? It's obvious.
Reply to TMWNN:
Me arse licking???? Never!
The way I understand it and the way I've heard we're going to line-up this season is the following:
Settled back 5 - Gomes, BAE, Woody, King, Charlie
Tough CM pairing - Wilson, Cana/Cattermole
Attacking wingers - Lennon & Maxi/Downing/ETC
Deep lying forward - Modric
Striker - Defoe
Apparently HR is keen to use Modric as the 'creative hub' and have the team built around him so he'll be the main man of the side and I imagine that Keane will deputise for Modric or Defoe depending on which one's injured/needing a rest.
No doubt we'll be signing another striker to replace Pav & Bent but the main areas I can see us recruiting in are CM and LW
Reply to Trembly:
Wouldn't want to try and say that after a few pints
I look at some of the eye watering spending on both fees and wages like Johnson for Pool - total cost £40 million and think we've entered a parallel universe populated by complete nutters.
If Johnson is worth that how is Hutton only worth 6 million? If Zok is worth 10 million how is the Hudd only worth 8.5 million? Some unknown from cardiff just sold for 5 million - never played in top flight.
On Darren Bent if we get offered 15 million early in window take it and get someone better a la huntelaar. But if we wait until end of august again we will be at the mercy of selling clubs and end up with no one. In that instance keep him and improve him by coaching.
Does anyone know if there's any weight at all to the Lorik Cana link? Has anyone seen him play beyond the one Youtube compilation circling the web as of yesterday? I'm already imagining him lined up next to Palacios in a 4-2-3-1 formation...
Reply to TMWNN:
I hear what you're saying but Huntelaar seems to be off somewhere and he's probably in the same sort of league as Pav so why not the lane.
He also has a name that is difficult to spell which makes it even more likely that he'll turn up here.
One of the reasons Arry wanted Ken Jones in January was that he did not want to risk a foreign player who might take time to get used to the prem.
Reply to jamiespurs:

Hopefully, the answer is enough to make you visit The Lane of Dreams where you can currently buy an unsigned copy of Norman Giller's excellent book for the price of £12-50, before it is published on the wider market at a more expensive price. Moreover, if you quote yours truly "Paul Smith", then Spurs Odyssey will benefit from a little commission.Note that the discounted offer closes on July 10 when the book goes on sale in the shops with an unsigned copy at £18.95. Signed copies will go up to £30."
You say that but we all know about your sensitive inner self and it's nothing to feel ashamed about.

Various 'ITK' links. I'm loathe to take their information as gospel BUT it makes sense.
Harry LOVES Modric, he waxes lyrical about the boy, and from what I've heard from my brother - who had the opportunity of talking to alot of Spurs coaches when the Academy side were in Qatar last season - He wants to build the side around Luka and play him behind his other favourite... Defoe.
The CM's we've been linked to are tough tackling 'hard' style defenders in a similar mould to Palacios (who's undroppable IMO) so it says to me we're going for Wilson & another tough CM in midfield.
Which will effectively give Lennon, new LW, Modric and Defoe a solid and reliable base with which to attack from whilst letting our settled quintuplet get on with defending.

You haven't been paying enough attention DV. Huddlestone, Keane and Bent aint no good.
As for Hoddle also needing space; that was over 20 years ago. Even you could keep up with the game then. It's moved on.
Jamiespurs, I know you're only reporting what you've heard, but how on earth can Defoe play the lone striker?
I like the idea of 4-2-3-1 with a proper left sided attacker (not necessarily a winger) and someone a lot more of a man than Jenas next to the sarge, but the lone striker is key.
Someone that can win a header would be at least a start.
Not been on for a while, but this is pretty sickening....

Bent was electric at Charlton and coal powered at Spurs. Aside from his undeniable goal tally it says all too much that it's Sunderland that have come in for him.
As for Huddlestone he is straightforwardly a player who doesn't quite do it either and for all whilst some of his passing is, to use the old footballing cliche, sublime, he too will not be going to a top four club either.
Footy is largely about romance. If it wasn't nobody with a brain would indulge much of the relentless poo poo that football fans do.
That said, the sooner we stop pinning our hopes on guys that don't continuously deliver the sooner we start winning things.
I don't believe either of the two above will 'come alive' and do anything magical for us at any point in the future just as I fail to believe Zokora can run into the opposition's half without falling over.
I don't have a beef with any of 'em , but I won't mourn their passing as I don't like relegation battles.
Double jested negatives aside, I'm right, you're wrong.
Let's hope the opposition have the same amount of awe as you for Huddlestone's passing ability. With luck, they'll all stand back in jaw dropped amazement and let him look like the player he isn't.
Bent: Top scorer with Charlton and top English striker doesn't not mean nothing never.

What a ball bag.
My guess is that the Levy - Bent comment is just his attempt to secure a sale of no less than twelve or so million. Expect him to go for around nine with add-ons.
The Hud to everton, villa or sunderland tells us more about the proximity of those teams to the top four than it does about our proximity to them. I like the story but should it be true it could easily be tempered by an equal sideways step by us; a grab for a downing, kenwyne jones or crouch type player for instance.
I'm still struggling mentally(let me finish) to see Our 'Arry as the man to forge a top 5 squad during the next couple of years let alone one that challenges higher, especially pre Green Hart Lane.
Should I be more positive?
Should I fcuk, I'm a Spurs fan.
GO ON THE SPUDS!

He has not read the book either because Norman Giller is not a Spurs fan. His son is.
Reply to HarryHotspur:
you've hit the nail firmly on the sweet spot there H, if they were any good one of the top 4 teams or citeh would want them.
The fact they don't speaks volumes.
Personally I see no point selling them until we nail down better replacements - it's gonna be a long summer
So its back to thus...THudd, Bent and Keane.
Could one envisage a league winning side with them in? One doesn't see why ever not.
Could one envisage Spurs winning the league or securing a Champions League berth and a cup next season with them as hard and fast first choicers for their respective positions? Not on ones nelly.
Could one identify available players who could replace them and launch us into the upper echelons we strive for? Darn tootin.
Then I humbly ask...what's with the beef? Shouldn't one always strive for Utopia? Surely as Spurs fans, one must always be critical of the present in order to ensure a better future.

Harry,
That is as accurate and succinct a summation of Piddlestains and Bunt as I'll ever read. It's a shame that your myopic friend Mr. Double-Entendre will never understand it.
If any of you are yet to buy Norman Giller's brilliant book "Lane Of Dreams" please hurry up and do so. And don't forget to mention that Onedavemackay told you to buy it that way Uncle Norman will make a small contribution to my Port fund.

I would like spurs to do the following:
Goalie & Back four - one addition required centre half/left full back combi player with skill, pace & height
midfield - 6ft plus beast to partner wilson and world class leftie (not downing!)
forwards - keep pav, defoe buy hunter from madrid & rossi from villereall
Finally stop adding deadwood to the squad & get rid of deadwood.
Simples

It has been pointed out to me that Spurssandy is saving up for a new pair of clogs so when ordering "lane of Dreams" please mention Spurssandy that way she may just have enough money to save her feet before the cruel and harsh northern winter sets in.
DV - I respect opinion and I also respect loyalty to players and looking to the future. However I challenge anyone to name a player in the current Spurs line up that they wouldn't replace with another from any other club at the drop of a hat if there were no barriers to signing them and our only aim was to be the best at all costs.
Winker for Azza? Gerard for JJ? Torres for Bent? Kaka for Keane?
But that is fantasy. The trick of course is to be able to improve every window without helping to improve our competition and without crippling ourselves in the process. I'd rather not sell Thudd, Bent or Keane if it meant we strengthened our direct competition which is why selling abroad is always attractive. The problem is, if we have to sell before we buy, then we've got to look at who's attracting the bids and weighing up the pros and cons.
Some of us might justify these actions by venting our frustrations at certain players, but thats the law of the land. Everyone is buddy-wonderful when you're winning but when the frustration of failing to achieve one's aspirations sink in for the umpteenth time, a change is as good as a holiday. Again - we must not let sentiment get in the way of an objective point of view.
Can we get better under the right terms and conditions? If the answer is yes - then surely we should try.
Right - lets fucking sign someone good NOW...please? This is painful - an I don't just mean my soliloquies.
English striker, try Alan Shearer who managed to score more than twenty, six times in the last 15 years, oh and Sir Les did it twice. Bunt is ok, but as Harry pointed out, if he was any good, where's the offers from the Sky4, Real, Barca, Milan etc. Sunderland would be a perfect level for him, we've got and require a little more class. Some of us don't do mediocre, apparently you do. XX

Buy Rossi from Villareal and then sell him back to Manure for £40m.
Reply to Trembly:
I know there are better players out there than Thudd but I'd like to give him another season. I have a gut feeling that Keane is going and it seems pretty obvious that Bent is.
But whoever goes or comes I am sure Arry will improve the squad and I'm equally sure that the bulk of his deals will meet with the approval of most fans.
Reply to onedavemackay:
Bunt has a first touch with all the delicacy of an elephant in must. He isn't a target man and has such bad positional sense that he appears to be hiding behind opposing defenders. He's quick, tallish and muscular, how does he manage it?. Apart from that he's the dogs ovoids. £12 mil would be a result. Tommy has had enough "one more" seasons, potential un-realised, byeeee.
If we buy before we sell, that will put us in a worse position when negotiating fee's with the buying clubs. Think of it. We buy 2 midfielders and a striker - suddenly every knows we need rid of players, so offer lower amounts. If we say we want to keep X, Y & Z then clubs will have to bid higher amounts for X, Y & Z to try and 'prise' them away.
So, lets fucking sell some players
Reply to Deadwood Stage:
Are you calling our goal scorer Bunt, give the man some credit you cunt. If it was`nt for his goals we would be in the same boat as Newcastle you wanker
Pass the Shiraz Harry, and don't trip up on your way to the glass.
Is it me, or are te natives restless
cheers
Calling Bent a 'top english striker' is optomistic, DV. There are clothes airers ahead of him in the queue to play for England.
And whilst Huddlestone can make jaw dropping passes he doesn't do it frequently enough at all whatsoever.
The reality is that they are make-weights.
It doesn't mean they're sh*t, or they're bad people, but just that in life some people are just 'alright' at what they do.
We need more from the category of guys that 'excel'. It's not being mean, just common sense. You wouldn't want your girlfriend to be just 'alright' would you? No you bloody wouldn't.

bunt 1 (bnt)
v. bunt·ed, bunt·ing, bunts
v.tr.
1. Baseball
a. To bat (a pitched ball) by tapping it lightly so that the ball rolls slowly in front of the infielders.
It was a reference to him scoring more goals off his shins than his feet you numbskull. I was not inferring that he is a c*nt, that level of intellectual discourse is your speciality. He seems like a perfectly amiable person, and a distinctly average striker.

Still only 3 major(ish) signings within the EPL, G.Barry,Santa Cruz and Glen Johnson, all others low profile and loan deals. Lack of readies? Leaves Spurs a whole lot to choose from ...COYS

Last time I checked, it's still over 90 days to the closure of the transfer window....
As we learned, for better or worse last year, sh%t dosen't happen until the last 30 days or so...
All we've seen so far is the stupid money.... Madrid, sh*&teh and Benitez.....
Fact is we're about tied with Chelski and Manure Utd in terms of deals made so far.....

How long ago was it you checked? 31st May??? Window closes end of August you wingnut.
More importantly, we play Barca in 4 weeks. Season starts in about 9, no 10 weeks. Pre-season starts in 2. We need new signings and we need new signings now. Get them settled, housed, introduced, full pre-season and ready for the visit of the scouse. August signings are a load of testicles, panic buys who wil offer nothing.
