Black Eyed Boys

Wednesday, 27 August 08, 04:32 AM · Comments (280)

Unfortunately for you, me and Levy the distress flares are fired and beneath their cold illumination the rest of the Premier Ships gather to watch the end of the THFC fire Sale.

No amount of courage or calculation can retrieve what is evidently a shambles. Bob's bailed and the second rat now sings his siren song to the Caledonian cloak & dagger man.

The situation is compounded by the inability to magic up replacements. the entirely over wooed Arshavin was a punt that has turned into the way we are planning to pay the rent and but the groceries.

Consultant surgeon Wendy's diagnosis was impeccable. Pervasive pessimisim. But his cure had a false remission and a nasty bout of Ratsoverboard (Insipidus Dessertus) broke out in the Armoury.

The transfers in have not equalled those out for a club so vocal over top four ambition. Simple as. The only bright spot is Woodgate. Speaking as a captain ought to.

Fair enough there HH.

However, if we bring in both Pavlyuchenko and Smooth Bum can we return to a state of over optimism?

I think there is no doubt we will lose on Sunday, but hopefully at least we will have brought in some fresh fish that will be ready to actually mount a comeback...

Only 5 and a half days of newspaper spin to go and then we will know where the board are really pitching for us to get to this year.....

At least it will then be about the football (so lets hope the results pick up rather sharpish).

Are there any reports about Roman that are not based on a single really (really) rough / dodgy translation of a Russian website, or could it all be a hoax that all the papers have jumped on? Sorry but false dawns etc etc....

BillyB - I mentioned in the alternative blog (LINK) that there are too many examples of extreme optimism and defeatism displayed on here. It can be a laugh to read, but I worry that some are jumping the gun again as they did pre-season.

Come end of play Monday, we'll undoubtedly be stronger than we are no - however I'm holding my breath to see whether we can be good enough. What I mean is not just to break in top4, but to consistently win and do it well.

Im particularly hoping the Huntelaar deal comes off. Not a fan of the smooth bum.
Either way its still not good enough. We are less of a striking threat than we ended last season. That includes the 'Possible' new boys. I wait with baited breath.

Pessimist extreme. You and I are not there so we do not know the nature of business and motivations behind every move, nor the problems that come with it. Leave the club alone to do their work and lets do what we can - support them. I cannot complain about any of the signings, i just have to wait till they all gel. kay

oi oi hazza,
Last year fifth spot lost 11 in a season, this year third and fourth will lose more then the measly 4-5 they did last time around. If we sign a hatchet in the middle, Charlie from the Moon, and The Hunter to go with Pavlova then we are considerably and justifiably 'opeful.

Like most of us I was filled to the brim of hope for a top 4 challenge or maybe even more. Berby was already showing his colours by the end of last season and so I never really thought he would still be here. Get shot now I say at £20million if necessary, he is dragging us down. But the event that really put us back was the shock Robbie Keane departure. It tore the heart out of the dressing room and we lost the galvanising ingredient which would have enhanced the introduction of the new personnel. Instead we have the shambles which has been trying to buy top strikers when we should have been bedded down for the winter. I just hope we can sort this debacle out quickly and get our season going and quick.

I've spent too many years waiting for this moment to come where we look as if we can possibly make a challenge for the top four. We've made some excellent signings so far that just need a little time to settle down. I refuse to give up on the team I love & expect everyone (except the sulker) to give their all for the cause. Having supported Spurs for decades I know where 'arry is coming from. Whatever we are getting is exciting because it is new for us and the numbers we are spending are big. But what we have lost is one of the most devastating strike teams of recent times in British Club Football whic had the added benefit of magic and intelligence. I think underneath all that lies the sad heavy irony that the team now under Ramos by Sep 1st would have been devastating with that strike pair.

The pisser is, other than the protracted nightmare of Berba's Utd switch, is the fact our season will effectively start in a weeks time. Docked points by Levy's determination to hang out for a few more mil. That said with Pav and my prayer of Huntelaar up front, we can still finish fifth. At least none of the teams we're up against come the end of season, have stollen a march on us. Fucking funny to see the scum lose to Fulham too.
COYS let's bloddy sign Huntelaar, then at least we'd have two strikers...

The Bulgarian is doing damage to nobody but himself .. and he will leave on our terms and our terms only.

I'm off for the weekend, far away from 7 minute check ups on Newsnow .. and I can't f/cking wait! I'll hear the good news on Monday .. I hope!

Sure, we would all like to have 6 points on the board right now, but does that mean because we don't that the season is all over? Instead of speculating as to who we may have when the transfer window shuts, let's wait & see how things pan out when it does, give a few games for the team to settle in & see how it goes. The last thing that we need to be doing right now is getting stuck in to a group of players that have been thrown together with little time to gel & expect them to be world beaters! Let's get behind these players who have agreed to play for the badge. COYS!!!

The situation may be a shambles as you put it H, but it's not really of our own making.
PSB asks for a transfer / head gets turned and he wants to go? we got top dollar for him.
Berba - Only Utd want him, and at a discount rightly we tell Stretford FC to fuck right off! Berba then has a strop unlike anything seen before.
We had to stand up to Utd or else every time we get a decent player they'll be off as soon as the big boys come knocking!
i'm certain General Levy's been trying to get people in but again do we buy any old rubbish? do we pay any price? Like it or not football is a business and as such we have to get top dollar for players we don't want to lose. We also aren't paying over the top (unless we absolutely have to) for players - especially risky purchases from other leagues.
The way football is means that breaking the monopoly of the so called big 4 is very, very hard.
Getting a CL quality side takes time, by the time you've sorted one part of the team out (i.e. forwards) the players think their the nuts and want to play CL football. As such the very top players won't come. The only ones we'll get are the ones the big 4 either don't want or think are too risky and will wait for some mugs like us to take the risk before poaching them from us if they're any good after a year or two.
This weakens the competition and makes the chances of these teams losing their position within Europes elite that much smaller.
We will always have to buy the likes of Pav and smoothbum etc and hope that a. they become starts in the EPL and b. we can hang on to them if they do! To break into this elite takes a hell of a lot of luck, something I don't remember us ever having!

Every season we get excited and every year we fail. What warped logic demands that we allocate such a large percentage of our time and emotion to such a fruitless exercise? Overall Levy has done about as good a job as we could have wished for but despite all the big spending, and the many hours spent in headhunting Director of Football, and top managers, we are certain of yet another mid-table finish. I urge you all to put this misery behind you and to put the time you have now freed up into ending poverty, fighting for world peace, and to get Amy Winehouse to kick the habit

Also fully agree on the DM. Modric was blunt when deployed in front of out back 4 for the first half hour on saturday but showed serious class when pushed up to the opposition D. We need a DM just to allow him to play. He is a gem and need to build around him.

Well up for PavingShingle as well. I've said on here before he's a bit raw for a 26 year old but I like the fella. Diarra, diarra, diarra next...

Yes, six points difference. But unfortunately Levy's been too busy tilting at windmills, Don Quixote stylee. I guess that makes Comolli the Sancho Panza of this farce.

Im pretty certain that is the first and only time Cervantes has been referenced on this blog.

Latest ITK information from spurscommunity.

Dreams do come true Paul and informant spot on, only correction is Berbprat accepted 26m plus add ons, with 15m down payment. From what I've been hearing is that Veloso wants to come big time, just the very tricky terms etc, which club confident, Arshavin looking very, very good, and its 17.5m that's been compromised, but I'm told its grip your bum time on that one from previous dramas. Hunts, yep. If signs Bent allowed to go, if not now in January. 2 contigencies loan signings on standby, and we may go ahead on one.

Oh yeh, allegedly.

PS: ITK?NITK can very seriously damage your health

[Corluka] Looking unlikely as they have second thoughts. I actually said to one of them, yeh he's good but no pace, and gets turned too easily, and the response was quite interesting to say the least, and no, I can't quote it.

DC speaks highly of him, GP, JR not so sure about him

We can have him if we want him, put it that way, but we not made up now.

Very interesting, I genuinely believe Arshavin is coming.

We are skint? Need Berba money before buying other players?

I don't think we have a bottomless pit of cashola

JGM/Magoo - you ever been to a market? I got dragged to these with the folks when I was a kid. If you have you'd know, as I was then told by my mum when I wanted to buy something, that sometimes its worth waiting till you get past the middle bit of the market to get better prices for the same thing or even better. Also, you'd know that in many instances - as the market draws to a close, those sellers with stock that they want to get rid off - often discount at the end of the day.

I've got a feeling that no-one else wanted Pavlyuchenko for the price he was touted at when the market opened. Making a firm bid at the start or right in the middle, leaves us open to being gazumped by those who can afford to buy anyone, or people with no initial targets - but as soon as you point one out - they want yours and outbid you.

Also towards the end of the market, those who initially had loads of cash, don't have as much. That's why we've got a better chance now of getting Arshavin for less than the £25m they wanted to start with - we're almost the only ones left to buy him and should be able to do so for less than £19m - no mean discount. I say almost, because chelscum could buy him just as a collection piece even though they don't need him.

Don't know either way what amount's left in the wallet. What I do know is that we are well run and so, we're more likely to have a black amex and proper wads of cash in there, unlike the IOU that some clubs like Man Sh*tteh have.

All this makes sense to me, but I suspect you, like would rather we had everything sorted early (like with Modric) so that I didn't have to go through the last 8 weeks worrying about who's in and who's not. five days left and as long as we come out properly on top, I'll be more than happy that the window finally slams shut.

Oh dear.

that newsflash comes from JASPER.

JASPER is famous for NEVER getting any info correct.

The chances of these deasl happening has now fallen drastically.

Unless of course rather than make stuff up Jasper has decided to just repeat what other (T)ITKs say in the hope they arent also making stuff up.

Again. Why would we have left all these signings until we are 2 games and 6 points down? They cant ALL be financed by Berbatov.

Unless we are holding out for 50m.

completely agree JGM, all these names and rumours have no substance to them. Arshavin, fair enough there has been a lot of noise comin out of Russia about this, but i mean more with the likes of Huntelaar and Veloso, names only mentioned in the same breath as Spurs on this very blog, and maybe tribalfootball, or fansfc or even spurscommunity =D I am just gonna wait to see if Pav deal comes off, and what happens with berbs, corluka and arshavin. And also hope that Levy pulls a massive surprise out the bag (a good one).

My over confidence in our pre-season results has already seen me have words with ‘me sister’ (sorry, you were right as always…), blow the weekend with the missus, which started with the moodiness our team selection procured Saturday and also seen me say boll@#ks to my fantasy football selection as my spirit’s already been broken in half due to the annual Spurs version of groundhog day. F*#k it!

I have been so looking forward to coming on here and waxing lyrical on at least one win against the backdrop of showing two fingers to “Bastardoff” and “PSB” but I find myself numb at the nausea that I have been feeling on match days for sometime now (months…). Being one of the biggest supporters of Ramos’s arrival I am dismayed at his apparent capitulation in accepting the Spurs managers ethos of putting square pegs into round holes. It makes me want to break something every minute of every day….

It is plain to me that we will win nothing of note, achieve nada of substance until we purchase or develop a player who will stand in the middle of the park, with his fist clenched and shout “dig” after he has just rattled into another opponent and received his latest booking. All great Spurs teams of the past have had such a person in their side and until we find a new one we are going to have to enjoy the movie without Bill Murray in it.

Excuse me, I’ve got to go and throw up again!

i wonder if my estimate this morning was close, see below then queue the pelters about my midfield assumption!!!;

So i think it is safe to say Pavlova is our man. 12 mill for a 26yr old is about right and not in the realms of ridiculous price that comes with smoothbutt. Think we need to move on from him and concentrate on another striker (pls Hod let it be Huntelaar) and not heskey/ashton....etc....

So,

Keepers - sorted
Defence - One CB/utility required (corluka likely)
Midfield - Sorted
Strikers - 1 x required assuming Pavlova arrives

Sales Pending;

Stalteri - 1m
Po (not teleltubby, the asian chap) - 2.5m
Rocha - 1.5m
Ghally - (jan window) 3.5m
KevPB - 4m
Taraabt - loan (do not sell unless over 5mill)

Total - 12.5mill

That would buy a CB

The balance of our Keano sale less Pavlova equates to say £7.5mill

use that for another striker

SORTED

As the old saying goes, “When one out-n-out Russian striker comes, his diminutive link –player countryman will follow.” - would be nice for the goal scoring dept at THFC and not too bad as far as marketing to world superpowers goes. Maybe the latter won’t come as his price tag is off-putting and his stature and services already exist in abundance at the club. If it were all easy, Levy would break the bank for Gareth Barry and he would play for the team he supports, or in an ideal world, trade a few midfielders, ie) Zokora, Lennon, Jenas for the boy and Ledley King would miraculously emerge knee-injuryless, along with competent cover, nevertheless, ie) Corluka. Oh, and the gaffer would play the boys in their proper positions, say, right wingers on the right, lefties on the left, and constant hair adjusters at the back with room to overlap and link w/ a certain left sided Mexican midfielder playing in a three man line in front of a holding midfielder…

Magoo/Todd - its been reported in the German redtop bild.de that he's gone as well, but scarily no details of a transfer fee has been given. Its not been reported on the official BVB.de website either. I do hope we got decent money for him. I mean, if we can get £2.5m for Bambi, I'm hoping for a bit more than that - even though he was way down the pecking order now that Baler is fit again.

Either way, I'd like to thank Young Pyo for his contribution during the BMJ years. He was good for us whilst we were in a growth stage and pretty good considering he was a right back working as a left back. Facts are though that he just wasn't the best out there and only what we needed for that stage. Good luck with the krauts Wipey. ;)

who cares that we got stuffed by two fellow mid-table teams? Who cares we have won only 3 games since the Carling Cup win? Lets buy a
couple of extra players and we will win the League. After all, we have a great track record in bringing in top quality.

Here are all the incoming players for the previous 3 seasons. You can argue with some of my evaluations but the message is clear. Our success rate in getting top quality is 1 out of 5 at best.

Total Players In: 31

Conclusion: Oh shit!

HITS: Jonathan Woodgate, Gareth Bale, Steed Malbranque, Dimitar Berbatov, Aaron Lennon

OK (includes “too early to say”) : Alan Hutton, Chris Gunter, Danny Rose, Pascal Chimbonda , Tomas Pekhart , Jermaine Jenas, Edgar Davids, Tom Huddlestone, Teemu Tainio

It is possible but you must sacrifice a black goat at midnight before a North London Derby. But be careful! If you sacrifice earlier or later or if its not fully black, you will still get rid of Comolli but he will be replaced by Pamela Anderson as the new Director of Football. Apparently she rates Heskey.

On the BBC website it says AA, Pav, Veloso & Corluka thought to be close to signing although it also says Huntelar's agent has dismissed talk of a move as no contact with us?
I don't like this - can you imagine if we signed those four! Our hopes would be through the roof (and then we'd dash all those hopes with some injury crisis of epidemic proportions)
Would put a link but as i'm a 33 year old techno-phobe (who can't spell!) I've no idea how to do it!

Why should we when we can get united to pay the difference instead?

We have been planning to buy arshavin and pav all along. But if Levy waits until the transfer deadline he can let fergie bung zenit 5 mill to drop the arshavin price for us. Utd and zenit will be in monaco for the supercup the day before the deadline. We then get pav and arshavin. At which point we 'reluctantly' let utd have berbs for an exorbitant fee right on deadline day.

End result, we buy arshavin for about 14 and pav for 12ish. Chances are we will break even. Utd pay 5 mil more for berbs than it says it has because it bunged zenit for smooth bum to grease the wheelsm of the berbs transfer.

Bloody hell. Smooth bum! Greased!! Oh dear!!! look out youporn here i come.

This was said 2 years ago and nobody listened - the idiot is still knockin about, and was probably responsibkle for bringin in another waste of space......... MODRIC: too small, too slow, poor positional sense, can't strike the ball very well - and most of all: he doesn;t fit into our team.

Hudds and Jenas should be the midfield pairing until ACTUAL quality is found to replace one, or both. Jenas is lost in there, and anybody would be: MODRIC BRINGS NOTHING TO THIS TEAM!

Progress my dear Modric, is limited. The tent has a hole in it and I tried to put it up in the dark earlier today. Alas, I shall wait till daylight to reerect it. My 6 year old son, who is eagerly awaiting his number 14 spurs third kit, has just told me that 'Veloso' rhymes with 'piano', and let's face it, he has a point.

Will Veloso play to our tune, sing the battle cries, and chant the glorious anthem - or prove to be a money grabbing Portuguese man-o-war - time will tell. ANother Rocha no thanks.

Further updates await

Adding Arshavin, who no fullback in the EPL can mark one-on-one, to the mix will give us an attacking lineup that only Chelsea can match. Bring on the Russians!

I've got a mate who heard a rumour from a mate who knows someone that catches the 237 every morning through chiswick and is good friends with the bus driver, who used to live in Haringey (next door to a fella called steve who has a season ticket in the Paxton) and he picked up a confidential memo addressed to a D. Levy that says that we are almost certainly signing Heskey from Liverpool- with Jonny Metgod and Nico Claesens going in the opposite direction.

I'm really sorry if i look i'm trying to be the big i am but i just can't think of anything else to say and i'm desperate for someone to notice me. If you couldn't tell by the lack of punctuation in my sentences i'm almost wetting myself with excitement at the thought of my worthless ramblings being published.

I wonder if the fact that spartak have now dropped into the uefa cup means that pavlyuchenko will be cup tied just like hutton was when rangers did as although he didnt play tonight he did in the first leg.

That would be a bummer!

Unfortunately yes according to the Guardian.

So we would still have just Bent for the wafer cup...unless we sign another?

So let's say Levy/Comolli hit the trifecta and in comes Arshavin, Veloso, Corluka and maybe even one other for good measure.

Hell, they even manage to dump every player deemed surplus.

Doesn't that set us up nicely for endless hours of misery in the months ahead, second-guessing about what the best formation should be?

Are you the only Spurs fan who hasn't seen Modric play ?

Absolute class he'd fit into any team and few will be as good for us this year as he will be.

As disillusioned as I am that the club has handed out near 20m for a useless pile of sh&te, and dropped a great physical player - Hudds - with great passing ability to accomodate and also pinned the club's hopes of CL football on him, I am not gonna play tricks on myself and imagine that what I am seing is good!

That's what you are doing mate. If you were a football man you would notice that Modric does nought for the team. Watch the games again and keep yoir eyes on but Modric. He is rubbish! I realsie I will have to wait what??... 3/4/5 years before the usually slow Spurs fans realise what has happened, but I thought I might find at least a few hundred bright punters among the thousands of arse***es. Stop listening to the hype.

And soembody at the club tell Bentley to pass teh bleedn ball. How many weak shots on goal duid he have in the Sunderland game. He had a few in Mid game too, but last weekend: RUBBISH!

Bring in O'Hara, Hutton and Hudds: get shot of Zokora, BAE and Modric. I am n ot watching another SPurs' game when BAE and Zokora are playing: it's too painful!

I realsie I will ahve to wait maybe 6 months for Modric to be dropped, and another 2/3 years for him to leave the club. BY WHICH TIEM I HOPE WE ARE NOT IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP

Kingyid - your post has given me a lot of hope again. I think Pavlyuchenko is the only possible striker available that is anywhere to close the class of Berbatov. The Lane is going to love him! Adding Arshavin, who no fullback in the EPL can mark one-on-one, to the mix will give us an attacking...

Daytripper, have you seen any Pavlyuchencko games? He is nothing like the Ungrateful one - nowhere near the same level of control and guile. However he does have pace and decent movement off the ball - so as long as he gets into those positions for us (and we pray he converts more than he misses) we should do alright by him.

As for your claims of "Arshavin, who no fullback in the EPL can mark one-on-one", he's certainly a tricksy bugger, but building up yours and other expectations like you are can only lead to disappointment. Lets take these signings as we should - with hope by all means, but with a dash of realism that there is a chance the magic will not happen straight away.

Anyway - the bit that interested me was that some Gold bloke called Ari (harry?) was chatting about how Woody had a dustup with the Ungrateful one last week (separate to the previous kicking?), called him a **** and thats why Ungrateful has been sent to coventry by the dressing room. If true (good on ya Woodster!) and the £15m up front and £13m over the next two years + addons is close to the mark, then we're well shod. Wether Pav will be the russian revolution we are hoping for is up for debate, but I welcome his arrival and hope to see him start with a bang against Chelsea on sunday. will he be joined by his mate, the smooth bummed one??? Well lets wait and see, apparently Zenit have significantly lowered their asking price and seems that Levy has won another game of brinkmanship - I would hate to play that man at poker, he'd end up taking the pants from your knackers!

Berba's off will hopefully leave in the coming days. We just need to wait to see how toothless ManUre are against Zenit on Friday night and I'm sure Fergie will crack & give us the money.

IMO more pressing matters are the need for a CB & CDM. Are we anywhere near to signing these types of player & in doing so plugging the gaping holes in what could be a glorious squad???

If we have the ball the opposition can't score, watch those games again and see how many times Modric gives the ball away. I appreciate he has not set the world alight yet but the guy has undoubted class. If this style of keep ball is not to your liking then maybe you should go and support Stoke City as their physical long ball / up & at em syle is abviously what your after!

Ginge,

Good defence until your closing statement came along!!

Lets be honest, Hudd is nowhere near having the same class as Modric. If he did then we wouldn't of needed to buy the croation schemer & Hudd would be playing for England and be the heartbeat of the side.

Hudd, for all his qualities (of which he has many) is slow, cumbersome, full of ketchup & i feel he lacks the bite and drive that could turn him from prospect to first team regular. Imagine if Hudd had the motivation of a player like O'Hara.... Hudd would be fantastic, with his size and that kind of drive he could be a midfield destroyer. As it stands though he seems happy to stay at the level he's at. Hoping that he can rely on his passing to get him by.

Modric, with a bit more bedding in time and a competent central midfield partner WILL be the metronome that makes us tick in midfield. As Ginge pointed out, his ball retention skills are magnificent and given time to settle it wont be long until he conducts our team from the middle of the pitch, picking out runs and setting up goals at will.

Give Mod a chance and he'll repay the faith.

AA's a hero over there. In the same way as Beckham was over here prior to that fateful world cup. I'm not sure that everyone realises that we're in for a star. Hopefully him and Pavlyuchenko don't suffer the same need for star treatment that seemingly plagued Shevchenko (according to mourinho that is).

Good news if we get him is that we'll be selling lots of shirts in Russia where they're not short on rubles, and perhaps another market for SpursTV to tap into? New commentary job available? If only I spoke fluent russian that would be a great little number.

Anyways.... Toodspur I think you're right. Far too many Gooners on here today. Mind you they're probably still on a high after beating Steve Maclaren's side. In fairness Maclaren must be used to losing to a team of foreigners after being manager of England!! ;)

Barry the gooner has gone all quiet. I love it when gooners come on here and fire off these emails and then hide behind their red shirts. At least Hoddle the gooner has some balls about him pretending he is a spurs fan.....keep it up mate but change your name to Adams (like the baby clothes chain, not your favourite player)

Do us all a favour and get down the post office & get in that dole queue! Hoddle is probably waiting for you.

See i wouldn't mind you saying I'd "changed the goalposts" if I had actually called for BAE to start a game, or had come out in full support of Berbatov and his antics. I haven't though, and everyone else knows that I haven't, so in short you and your mate Hoddle (if you are two separate people & not just one sad idiot) are making yourselves (yourself) look like a wan*er.

The list is too long! Robbie is just a good example. I wanted to like Modric, I admit I was worried even before he came because of his lack of certain physical attributes: speed, height. But on the 'real' evidence thus far, it is much worse than I thought. He does seem to have some ability around the box as displayed for Jenas' goal, but besdies that: slower than I thought, trots back when the opposition breaks, no defensive ablities and doesn't seem to take that side of his game seriously, he cannot strike the ball well... yes he hammer teh ball at the keeper from 12 yards out - so what!? He looks like an extremely avergae footballer, and with his lack of physical presence that makes him useless to our current situation in my eyes.

We have plenty of quality on teh bench includ. Hudds, let's use it!

Afraid if BAE, Zokora and Modric play this week, we are gonna get stufft! Not a bad thing in the long run if you ask me.

Anybody notice how good we lookt after BAE went off last weekend? No coincidence!

JS - one thing I'm getting from these interviews with Roman Pavlyuchenko is that he's not short of an opinion. I can see him actually being quite a vocal chap and quick to state his mind without any sort of precognition of its effects.

I don't know how he's going to cope with Ramos' fitness regime either. If Guus Hiddink told him to lose weight before the Euros, I can only imagine that the regime at Spartak wasn't particularlu on the ball - then again thats probably why they were shown the door?

If you were say a Spanish alcoholic, or an Italian - then that is a big deal. These countries know how to drink socially and not binge as we are prone to in the UK. However the Ruskies make us look like tea-totallers in comparison. Vodka is a way of life whatever the occassion, wedding, birth of a baby, because its a cold day etc etc. Apparently its common for people to get so mullered from their home made stuff that they go swimming in the Moskva river when temperatures in the dry are around -30C or less. Needless to say, I've never heard of anyone learning from their mistakes.

If AA arrives as well, hopefully he can lead Roman down a quieter path, but the likelihood is that we will see photos of them down at Faeces. Lets just hope they have a proper occasion to celebrate.

UEFA cup football is played at a much slower pace than the PL and i think this could play into our hands. We will have more time and space to play into and it will allow players like Modric, Bentley, JJ to dictate the pace of the game. Just look at how we took Dormund apart in pre-season.

Trembly, Pav doesn't strike me as having a weight problem. He looks like a beanpole and he looked in good shape during the EURO's. I certainly think he will prove to be a good addition to the squad and probably be quite a big presence in the dressing room too. Like you say, lets hope if AA does come that Pav will settle in quickly and that AA's calm style has a good effect on Pav.

Barry - Hudd has been terrible when he's been called upon this season. He needs to get some motivation & drive or he'll never fulfil his potential. Modric is a far better footballer than Modric for a whole variety of reasons. If you don't believe me go watch the England 2 - Croatia 3 game and tell me Modric didn't dictate the game OR watch the Croatia 2 - Germany 1 game from EURO2008 he did the same in that one too! Stop thinking Hudd is the answer, if he was he'd be in the starting 11 every week!
BAE wont play as he's a liability, lets hope Ramos sees sense and puts Bale at LB. Zokora should not be playing at RB as he can't pass, can't shoot and can't cross, he runs around alot but he's not the kind of player we need against Chelsea. I think Gunter has earnt his chance.

JS - true, we are very suited to european football even before the new buys. The last 2 years Hudd has looked really good playing at the slower pace (which makes me think he could be a very good player for england where we just cant retain posession despite him having his faults in the PL) but i was more thinking of the sharp end of the competition than the usual uefa fodder as Milan would be a different ball game with chances at a premium.

Just a small point JS. I'd like to clarify that I DO NOT rate Zokora but both against Orient in pre-season and on saturday, I thought his crossing was actually pretty good. Agreed that he should not be there for Chelsea though as we will need someone who has the attention span and greater positional sense than the average 3 year old (ie NOT didi)

I remember when I was younger I could burn it all off but after 26, all those jars started to accumulate round the middle. Perhaps if Pav is fond of the non ketchup kind of sauce, that could be a reason for any excess baggage?

Dont think that Milan are what they used to be. They still obviously have a good side but their defence is dodgy. In goal they have Dida who actually made the Robinson of last season look like Peter Schmeichel, in defence they have an ageing and immobile back four, probably the oldest in europe, even players like Nesta appear to be past it. I still think we are in a better position to win the UEFA cup than we were in last year. Before we relied on Keane & Berba to score our goals, now we have more of a goal threat from all over the team.

PLN

I know what you're saying about Huddlestone. I dont think he's a complete waste of space but i think he lacks a bit of drive and passion. Like is said earlier he just seems to have settled on his passing game. He needs to be more than that, he needs to add a bit of running & aggro to his game IMO or he'll never reach his potential. Ramos has cocked up by giving JJ the vice-captaincy, it almost means JJ is undroppable and that the likelihood of seeing Modric and Hudd in CM at the expense of JJ is slim.

Expensive taste would mean the brit wags surely? I've got a feeling they're much higher maintenance than their euro rivals even though they pretend to go shopping for clothes at George at Asda.

I think what you actually mean is that you've got more cultured tastes JS. They've definitely got alot of 'culture' . Take this story with a pinch of salt but logical thinking makes me believe the Glaziers are suffering under the current credit crunch, if true, Berba cannot be afforded and will be in our ressies, i fancy a flutter myself on this at the odds quoted

Not sure but maybe already too late for an international non eu transfer, especially as another cold war is about to break out! (Maybe that's prompted Pav's change of heart - he want's to get out while he still can! ;) )

I just wanted to know as I feel there will be a couple more signings before sunday but was unsure whether they would actually be allowed to feature on sunday...anybody able to enlighten me as to when a cut off point would be?

Just been talking about that little runt at work. Was saying how poor he has been for Pool and what a waste of money he was at £20m. I think it speaks volumes that when Liverpool need a goal Keane is the player Rafa brings off. He's done it in every game so far (i think so anyways) but they always score after Keane has been subbed! Gerrard is out for anything upto six weeks, so expect Liverpools wheels to fall off sometime soon!

Toddspur - What were they saying about Nobbie Keane???? I cant listen to Hawksbee & Jacobs on my works pc!

Something funny for you. Its not about Spurs but I love anyone who treats Robbie Savage with such disdain! Especially when its his own manager!!

During last season’s 4-0 defeat by Reading, Jewell turned to Savage at half-time and asked him to check if the showers were hot.

When Savage asked ‘Why?’

Jewell replied:‘Because you’re going in them’ and substitute the midfielder.
