Blackburn Indoors - The Player Ratings, Match & Fight Highlights

Sunday, 23 November 08, 08:21 AM · Comments (134)

The Blackburn wall or our lot planning a wonderstrike? Difficult to tell....

So Tottenham catapult themselves from bottom to 15th. Waheeey.

Boy did we miss Modric. We lacked his guile and we lacked his inventive bursts at the enemy. And that's my beef. Even against a gormless ten man gang of herberts like Blackburn we really lacked imagination.

Bentley's long corner's weren't so bad. But the short ones and the spot kicks were substandard. And then it struck me. I don't think he's all that bright. Harsh, but better we grasp these nettles sooner than later. The short corners were a response to our own inability to cash in on the actually half decent long ones.

The free kicks were rotten.

I've seen Building Society safes with shorter time delays. The ceremony of the ball placement. The painfully predictable roll pass to Huddlestone. The straight faces. Nobody looks a serious as a tailor's dummy.

Bentley is a talent, that's not being debated, but I don't know if he was trying to show his former team mates he was now playing at an entirely different level, but all he succeded in doing was annoying me.

Lennon skipped and scrambled past a pretty clueless Blackburn. Paul Ince might not actually be the world's worst manager. But no one's ever going to find out whilst he's in charge of this lot. Ooijer-Bored and Olsson more resembled pipe fitters or mechanics than footballers. In fact what we're looking at are Mick McCarthy's Sunderland the season they last went down. Brutish and brain free.

The blazing comet that was Santa Cruz has not so much gone off the boil as developed pneumonia. And was it really only a season or two back that Pederson was scoring for fun and the subject of megabid speculation?

I view Blackburn without any emotional attachment, but they look every bit like a team going through the motions. And Spurs will have to drastically raise their game to stay out of the Zone Of Shame.

Everton next - then West Ham. Neither of which would sit patiently for the remaining 81 minutes of a game waiting for our second goal.

 ************************

Gomes 5.5 Awful drop in the opening minutes and little wrong afterwards. I'm unconvinced the 'rye' cheers at his every touch will spur him on, but on balance I prefer them to booing.

Corluka 7 Looks every bit the part. Dare I say, reliable.

King 6.6 Largely untroubled. Solid.

Woodgate 7 What he has done has been sound. Especially that bit when he denied them a goal.

Ekotto 5 Beginning to annoy me, in a Chimbonda kindda way.

Huddlestone 6.6 A good game but looked hemmed in compared to recent outings.

Jenas 6.3 Heroic one minute duff the next.

Lennon 7.2 Man Of The Match from the kick off onwards. Electric.

Bentley 5.1 Booked for simulation. Also ought to have been done for being 'a bit of softie' and 'taking crap short corners.'

Pavlyuchencko7.1 Champions League grade finish. Spritely break and Lennon's assist was perfecto.

Bent 6 Another day another abysmal lack of service.

Joe Jordan 11 Don't kow what he was screaming but loved that he did. Rock on.

What has Bale said about Harry's mother to keep him out of the side? He must have done something very wrong to be below BAE in the pecking order.

Glad to see Lennon back to form. Made the winning goal and got Olsson sent off to effectively end the game. Lovely stuff.

I'm tempted to dismount off that review thinking that these marks have an air of stinginess about them.

But in the main, the verdict is harsh but fair. Except where Lennon is concerned. If that was a 7.2 performance, what do you have to do to get an 8? Head in a hatrick from the halfway line?

I've never seen him better. Lennon was, dare I say, mercurial.

Aside from this, I can't help feeling embarrassed. Embarrassed at the Gomes YAYs at every touch. Embarrassed at JJ's passing lottery. Embarrassed at not being able to kill off a game, even when we're playing against 10 men for an hour and twenty. Embarrassed at Louis Walsh. Embarrassed at the stand up if you hate arsenalers.

On the flip side, it's nice to see Huddles trying on the uniform of a midfield colussus and seeing it might actually fit one day. Big shots, passing like Carrick, and even - somebody pinch me - a little bit of verbal afters.

Can someone clear this up for me, cause i swore i heard us booing robbo yesterday. Now this may have been a blackburn chant of shoooot, but since those brainless muppets don't even fill out their own stadium, they're even less likely to have watched other games in the last couple of seasons. Can anyone clear up if it was a boo or shoot?

If we were booing, i'm truly embarrassed by our fans, since even with his spotted history for us, he was still a genuine spur... didn't deserve that at all!!

Totally agree with the BAE mark. The guy can run, i'll give him that. Shame is his postioning was somewhere up to Olson's standards. Anyone who lets Brett Emrton past him needs shooting.

Looking Dosey as f*ck, don't help either

Fair point well made, Michael. I could not agree more.

That noise you heard that sounded like booing was in fact booing. Because there are non-entities like this out there: LINK

cucumber.. as in cool. as. a..

KING: (7)
excellent positional sense.. as always

WOODY: (7.5)
back to his best..

EKOTTO: (6)
nothing special.. decent showing..

LENNON: (9)
MoM.. what else can one say?

BIG TOM: (7.5)
one cool motherf*cker.. oozes class.. performance today was only bettered by Lennon..

JENAS: (6.5)
runs with ball...loses ball...runs with ball...loses ball
today wasn't his worst day by any means.. but.. well let's not get into this..

BENTLEY: (6)
slows game down an awful lot.. which is part of his game i guess but he was very frustrating today coz we know he can do much better.. having said that he came in for some heavy treatment from the Blackburn players and supporters (all two of them)

SUPERCALIFRAGALISTICROMANPAVLYUCHENKO: (7.9)
twice the player Bent is.. makes himself available.. can hold up play..can lay it off and is reasonably creative.. starting to score goals too..

BENT: (6.5)
a performance much in the same light as Jenas.. tried hard but ultimately didn't do a whole lot.. held the ball up well at times.. Harry and Joe were seen screaming at him to make runs with about ten minutes to go.. i think the one thing most of us can agree on is that he's at his most dangerous when the ball is put on a plate for him.. but let's get behind him and hope the goals don't dry up..

C*MPBELL: (7)
dynamite..

O'HARA: (-)

BALER: (10)
keep doing what you're doing Baler.. stay on the bench and we'll shoot up that table..

JAMIE REDKNAPP: (10)

I think you have me there. Stingy's about right. I think if I'd done them immeadiately at full time they'd have been even lower... They should've been higher, but I got increasingly tetchy as the 2nd half dragged on.

And as for that rubbish, 'Stand up....' business. Well said.

Spurs have yet to win a league game where Bale has played. So maybe Harry reckons he is just bad luck. He played last week against Fulham and look what happened :-). I reckon he will play against NEC

Lennon however (and I'll get an earful here probably). Yeah he played really well. But he won't get three yards every time he gets the ball to get a head of steam up very often this season. Credit to him for making the most of his chance, but I'd love to see him do it more consistently.
You've gotta give Harry credit I think. He realised their left back was shite and he gave Lennon a go at him. Up until now he's been saving him to attack tired legs more often than not.

No boing where i was sat. It was either chants of Yiddo, England's No. 1 or your spurs and you know you are and from what I could see down the Paxton end, they all gave him a standing ovation at the start of the 2nd half. What made me laugh was the reaction of a handful of the Blackburn fans (so all of them then!) when Robbo came over to thank us. They went ballistic. Hurling abuse at him for being a traitor and the like. Very funny.

As for Gomes, we all sung, we love you Gomes, we do when he was down the Park Lane End in the 2nd half. Apart from a wobbly moment from a corner, and a couple of hesitations he looked OK.

Also, ive neber stood up for so long at a Spurs game. The steward down the front was looking more and more frustrated as people continued to stand. The chants of Stand up if you hate etc etc, were basically to stop people from sitting down at all!

Good to know Robbo got the applause he deserved. I heard the chants of "You're Spurs and you know you are on the telly" and raised a wry smile.

As or the Stand Up song, I 100% agree with Willy - it's always used as an excuse to stand up. Which is Ok if you like standing and are in the South Lower or Shelfside.

On the rare occasions I am in the West Stand Upper Tier I quite enjoy joining in with that chant for a laugh.

I have not posted here in a while, but I have been reading diligently and following spurs from across the pond, have not missed a game yet. I want to post because I want to give my two cents (or pence I suppose) that Big Tom is by far the most skilled player on the pitch. Corluka as many have noted, great at the back, and probably the closest to Big Tom in terms of world class. The game proceeded quickly and I was pleased to see Lennon playing to potential, but throughout the game the poise and pinpoint passing was just unbelievable by Big Tom. Sure he might miss a couple here or there, but it is the creativity he brings that makes watching Spurs a pure pleasure. Week in and week out, I read on here how Big Tom was only behind so and so for MOTM. How about MOTS so far? It does not matter if he is left or right booted, both are equal in accuracy, maybe a little more power with the right, but absolutely superd gift he has. He is the one to build a team around in my opinion. But if we have two to build around, two midfield generals, two creative geniuses, one big one small, I can only see bright futures as both have many years left. By the way, not really seeing the "he's to slow" comments flying around lately. A little bit of slowness but with the desire to get in and make tackles and find the up men on a frozen rope from 50y is a valuable asset. Each game he impresses me more and more, and I am happy 'Arry gave him the chance to shine like we all knew he was capable of. Let's just hope we can all emulate the Jeffersons LINK

There was one instance in the first half when we booed- but it was just banter, and was sandwiched between very generous cheers from all round the ground. It was like a bloody testimonial! After the boo, he turned round and gave a thumbs up and knew it was only messing about. The guy is a class act, epitomised by his interview on Footy Focus on Saturday. Feel sorry for the Blackburn fans, who were like the ugly wife watching him flirt with his fit ex, knowing he will never really love the rough Northerner!

Not sure what to make of the Gomes cheers. If I was being naive, I would say it was people trying to help him out but ending up sounding a bit condescending. After the couple of rounds of 'We love you Gomes, We do!', he knew that most of the crowd were behind him and gave a thumbs up to the stands.

Not man of the season. He's had a couple of good games, and he was the livliest i've ever seen him yesterday in terms of closing down and forcing errors. Still not convinced he'll be able to produce against the top sides but hope he can prove me wrong.

Agreed on Corluka though, he was the coolest man on the pitch and don't remember him wasting possession once. A great buy.

Fair enough, but he stunk the place up against Villa this year. Truly awful. I'd love him to fulfil his potential, but i'm not getting carried away.

I'd like to see Corluka given a go at DM. Spoke to a Citeh season ticket holder a couple of months back and reckoned his best performances came when he was playing in fron of the back 4. The guy is not a full back by trade. All I want for Xmas is Hutton and Bale playing well again, and new knee for little Ledley. Not too much to ask.

Charlie can play LB but he's a better RB. Hutton is injured again by the looks of things. We just need Baler to sort himself out. he's always terrific for Wales and for 8-9 games last season for us. This year he seems to have a mystery bout of shite-itis. Hopefully a nice Christmas programme of footy will sort his young taffy head out.

It's not easy playing against 10 men. I can't really see how a ten men team with only one striker should be so much easier to play against than a 11 men team with 2 strikers. However it is easier to defend against a team with only 10 players. The downside is that as long as we have a goalkeeper who marinates his gloves in olive oil before a game we will always need a 2 goal advantage. No matter how superior we are.

With 10 men, the barb of their counter attacks should be dulled if not removed, and with no like for like replacement on the bench - which they didn't have - it's 9 men plus one out of position.

So, yes, it should be hard playing against 10 men. In five a side.

as some of you may know, I head a crusade to eliminate naughty language and rough stuff behaviour from the noble art of footie. Therefore, I salute Mr Andrews for his restraint in attacking Mr JJ. Whereas the likes of Mr GBH Barton would have thrown a punch, Mr Andrews merely went for a wedgie attack. I applaud this trend from a slap to a wedgie and look forward to the day when an aggrieved player will merely tell his opponent that he is going to get his Dad to get him.

Not a performance to get overly excited about but so many times in the past we've thrown away points after failing to kill off teams so I was reasonably satisfied with the outcome. Loved the comment by the ESPN analyst about defending as a unit - "You're all literally on a piece of string" - now that would be worth watching.

Of course Harry you are spot on in your analysis.

With the Modmaster we always look capable of scoring without him we struggled to break down an average team and worse still, we seemed to lose all our drive as soon as they went down to 10 men.

Lennon was great but when hasn't he been this season ? He always seems up for it and his final ball on either foot is much improved.

I am utterly convinced that Gomes is a seriously decent goalkeeper in disguise. I just hope we stick with him long enough.

Then we have Pavlyuchencko. This boy is a really classy striker and the goal was reminiscent of Teddy in his prime.

Oh, and FC looks like a pretty good prospect I wonder if the Govern growler will let him go.

Gomes is a class goalie, I just hope he adapts to our league and doesn't lose too much confidence.

I work for a Dutch company based near Eindhoven, most people there are big PSV fans (a lot of seaon ticket holders) and they all agree that Gomes was key to them winning the league the last few years.

Even the Ajax and Feyenoord fans say he is a brilliant goalkeeper.

He just needs time, whether he gets it is another matter.

HH, surely Rocky Santa's only got a chill cause his supply lines have dried up, otherwise I thought he played quite well and always a threat.

Bentley was their main supply line last season and I think that has also affected Pedersons game. Prior to Bently doing well, I remember Pederson being their main threat on set pieces. I can only imagine that he's lost motivation seeing decent people leave, and I would hack-psycho-evaluate that he may even have instead placed his focus on the non-footballing aspects of his life. If he was singing like a budgie (going cheap), I'd have him for our 'Arry at spurs. Great left foot, right foot, and shot from distance. He's not the slowest either and his whole performance yesterday, poor positioning, bad decision making, lack of trackingback/defending was one clearly a confidence/motivation thing - I've seen enough of that at Spurs at the start of the season to know that the team just don't like Paul Ince or believe that he's someone that they can win stuff with.

Chuck in Rocky as well and you've got a done deal.

From Phillip L. [BRFC.com]

Congratulations on getting the win.

We had set ourselves up to deal with Bentley but forgot about Lennon and paid the price when Lennon laid off a perfect pass from the random number generator that are his final balls.

Have you seen a worse central midfield pairing in the Premier League than Andrews and Mokoena? This is suicide by Rovers- Ok we had a suspension (Warnock) and Reid and Dunn are long term injuries but we have a very bright young midfielder called Judge who didn't make the bench and Johann Vogel (Dutch League player of the year only five seasons ago and ex-AC Milan) whom Ince has completely frozen out. We were crying out for creative passes to Santa Cruz and McCarthy so of course Tugay sat the game out on the bench.

You must have been delighted by our rehabilitation of Gomes. An attack of the dropsies during our obligatory bright first ten minutes (we always have a bright first ten minutes but never score during them) but after that we were the perfect guests rebuilding the lad's confidence.

I could see why Spurs had such a bad start to the season. If we had been half-way decently set up for the game, there were enough weaknesses and errors for us to have exploited. But we weren't, we didn't and you in turn failed to exploit your man advantage or put Robinson under any sustained pressure.

5 points between 7th and relegation.

A win on Sunday would hopefully give us a little bit of breathing space, but we're still not playing that well and the 4 we had in midfield against Blackburn won't be sufficient against Everton.
I think we should revert back to a 5 man midfield against Everton and play O'Hara alongside Huddlestone and play Jenas further forward if Modric is still unfit.
Bent offers little if there's nothing to run on to. King will probably be unfit too along with Hutton so a recall for Dawson looks likely.

"5 points between 7th and relegation". That is exactly the phrase the pays. You've won this fabulous speedboat to take back to your two bedroom flat in Middlesborough.

This is precisely why I was left with a knitted brow at the final whistle this weekend, because goal difference is going to count this season more than ever. If one nils against a 10 men Ince managed Blackburn is going to be the order of the season, I think the new years resolution will be missing the usual suspects of quit swearing, smoking, and drinking first thing in the morning.

Mate, we've scored 21 goals since Redscnapps came in so I think you're being a little bit harsh. Listen, if we win every game 1-0 from now until the end of the season, where will we end up?! I don't think we'll ever have a problem scoring goals (cue goal drought!) it's letting them in we need to worry about. The only way to cure that is to play a consistent back 5.

Gomes
Corluka
Woodgate
King
Bale / BAE

That's my opinion for what it's worth.

Charlie can play LB but he's a better RB. Hutton is injured again by the looks of things. We just need Baler to sort himself out. he's always terrific for Wales and for 8-9 games last season for us. This year he seems to have a mystery bout of shite-itis. Hopefully a nice Christmas programme of...

We've got to make sure we rotate the squad properly for this game. We play on Thursday, and thanks to Everton crashing out against some Belgians, they're all going to be fresh whilst we'll probably still be knackered.

I agree with your back 5. Although I would shuffle the midfield and have Lennon starting on the left (he's on fire, lets finish this game at half time and keep him on the boil!) and JamieOH on the left wing to give the Baler someone to help block out any left wing threat (I still believe that this is a good LHS pairing).

Pavers is cup-tied in Europe? So Frazier and Benty it is up front.

As for the kids/reserves - they showed that individually they're not yet ready and I read about a short pass by da Prinz that lead to a goal for Stoke ressies! When you have kids coming through, playing in Europe is one thing, but winning a game is a whole level up. If we do blood the Bostock again and others, we should do this when we're comfortably ahead - the whole thing is to get their experience and confidence up, and not chuck them into a miserable dogfight and get a taste for losing...

Ha, serves me right for not listing my pref line-up properly :?

DV, Nun - I had intended to start Bentley on the bench. But then I thought who's going to take the free kicks resulting from the many fouls on him? Baler??? If he's got his books on properly, pourquois pas? Thudd has decent dead ball technique and imo should start learning to do the curlers. JoH is also handy with his left foot and I expect we haven't seen the potential of boy Campbell due to Bentley hogging and primarily wasting the majority of these.

Based on previous results, if Zagreb beat them 3-2 (late winner) in their only match so far, then weird logic says if we put out the team that played against dynamo, then we should be ok. But I hope this isn't the logic used by 'Arry. A team of unknowns (to me at least) could be a potential banana skin, but by rights with the right blend and ensuring no complacency or ego is visible, we should do a simple job here.

Their Eredivisie form is not mind blowing (8th place) recently:
losing 3-0 to Roda (now 16th)
beating PSV 1-0 (now 5th)
beating Sparta Rotterdam 2-0 (now 13th)
drawing 2-2 with Groningen (now 4th)
losing 2-0 to Ajax (now 3rd)

i changed enough so that it doesn't resemble that Bulgarian c*nt's name (still struggling to remember his name as it happens.. i think he signed for some team up north)

but not changed so much so you'll all still know who i am..

*que a power-point presentaion from Dannyboy about how i'm still a c*nt and he's greater than Bill Nicholson*

i'd like to say obviously we have some very good players like woody,king,modric...but thank fuck they signed corluka the guy is class and useful...22 and 6'3 or something...and with lennon i'd say our men of the season at the moment...along with woody for actually being consistent....also i think pavlyuchenko has a real sweet shot and looks like he is going to score...a real goalscorer...bent is quick but he really isn't good enough to be the main man upfront for a club like the mighty spurs...so lucky we got pavlyuchenko....roll on thursday night...go for the win....

Who will Harry play on Thursday? I am sure he'll want to rest some players for Everton on Sunday.

What will it take to beat the flemmy Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie?

Gomes
Hutton Dawson Woodgate Bale
Bentely Zok Thud Bostock
Campbell ...

We've got to make sure we rotate the squad properly for this game. We play on Thursday, and thanks to Everton crashing out against some Belgians, they're all going to be fresh whilst we'll probably still be knackered.

I agree with your back 5. Although I would shuffle the midfield and...

I forgot about Pavers being cup tied so it will be Bent I also think the Prince might get a go. I think Lennon should be rested, given that Modric is out -- we need Lennon for the league with out him. Bostock on the bench makes sense. Is Gio ready yet?

What do we do if gets injured? They fowled the crap out of him on Sunday. With Modris out, its a safer bet to play him v. Everton than in the UEFA cup against tupence Dutch side.

I dont think the Prince will play - he had a shocker in the reserves last match.

Hutton is out so my line up will be:

----------Gomes----------
Gunter-Woodgate-Dawson-Bale
Bentley - Hudd--Zokora--Lennon
------Bent---Pavlychenko----

Subs:
Cesar
Zokora
BAE
Campbell
Bostock
Prince

For whats it worth, I reckon it will be a rout: 5-1

BC,
Amongst his other crimes, that useles twat Wendy, failed to register the players he'd excluded from the squad, for the UEFA cup. So KPB, Taraabt, Ghaly, Rocha and Stalteri are no-no's for Europe. Given that Pavs and Charlie are too, it's an annoyingly poor decision, but typical of Wendy's ineptitude.

If you'd chosen a former player's name to bastardize, and followed that with an explanatory post, we'd all have known who you were. 'Bimmi', however you f*cking spell it, still reminds us of that treacherous, balding c*nt. You seem like a decent bloke, do the decent thing and clean any reference to that c*nt off the site, you tarnish yourself by association.

Nah I'm not Jenas. She does do everything else, so it seemed a small price to pay! I took her to see us play Newcastle when she was eight months pregnant and we were behind the goal next to the Toon fans! Not only did she not complain, she scared the shit out of Shay Given! :)

From the BBC: Tottenham are without Ledley King (knee), Alan Hutton (foot), Luka Modric (groin) and Giovani dos Santos (ankle) for the Uefa Cup group game.

With Roman Pavlyuchenko and Vedran Corluka cup-tied, Harry Redknapp has picked a youthful squad.

Chris Gunter has been tipped to start, while youngsters John Bostock, Adam Smith, Yaser Kasim, John Obika and Ryan Mason have all travelled to Holland.

And midfielder Jermaine Jenas has joined them despite a toe injury.

I too think Rocha, along with Ghaly, KPB, Taarabt and Stalteri are not registered for Europe, so with the injuries we currently have and the no Pavs or Charlie, we are very light tomorrow. Big chance for Dawson, Gunter and Bale, Bostock Campbell and to make a name for themselves.

Yeh that's really clever, deny Gomes a potential confidence boosting game against weaker opposition to play the emergency O.A.P. keeper.
