Boro Away - Prematch Prattle!

Friday, 15 August 08, 11:55 AM · Comments (408)

We're back Yids and ready to rock.

This campaign is going to be a long one and it starts with a visit to a man who describes being beaten at home 'like being burgled'.

Tottenham don't have great form at Middlesbrough but I'm convinced we'll get a pull for a successful smash & grab at the very least.

This could potentially be a masterclass for Spurs. Boro are almost certain to play deep and want Tuncay or Aliadiere to spring Mido or Alves. If our virtually brand new fully fitted luxury midfield boss it and our defence live up to expectations I cannot see this lot stopping us.

Modric & Co. have far greater intelligence and ability than any of Southgate's charges and it's the midfield that will decide this. As far as strikers are concerned I expect at least another Bent goal and say if he scores on Saturday they'll be no stopping him all season.

Berbatov? Who knows or cares. He's been in the shop window all summer and to what purpose? Faded from prolonged exposure and dead flies his only companions. His position's untenable. When he goes there'll be a scrutiny of what we got for him and if he stays it reflects market forces not desire.

Predictions? 0-2 to the Tottingham which is as good as 11/1 in places where you don't have an existing obligation to the house.

Here's terrific video to get you in the mood from YiDo Productions. More great Spurs vids are available from them and others HERE.

Bit Concerned that Peckhart did not get a squad number? Any one else think it's a bit strange.

COME ON YOU SPURS! Cant remember when I was this excited about the start of a season. Actually I can, it was last season!

Like you say Harry, looking at boro's midfield and ours, there should be no problems. Theirs doesnt look any better than Roma's. Or Norwich's for that matter. We have to watch out for this new bloke of theirs Digard tho, he looks like he could be a bit of a player.

I am massively apprehensive about tomorrow, looks like the best lineup we have had in my living memory, but being Spurs fans we all know how things can turn quite quickly. I will close with another hearty COYS!!!!!!!!!!!

Cant wait.

A 1-3 Spurs win for me. Bent, Bale & Modric with a late home consolation.

I cant remember being so positive before a season starts for about 20 years. We need to get off to a great start, at least 16 points from our first 8 games. That will give us the confidence to kick on and grab 3rd or 4th spot.

Harry, I have been wating for this season to start since we won the League Cup! I can't wait any longer.

The usuual pre-match reviews are leaden with worthless comparisons to this fixture last year or Boro's dazzeling thrashing of Man City on the last day of last season. What? Who cares? That is all superflous immaterial drivel. This is not last season. This is the new Tottenham. New goalie, who is aware of his surroundings, a confident cock who won't cower or panic. If King and Woody are fit with Gunther and Bale either side of them we'll have a titanium back bone. Buit the real revolution is in the middle. The fresh sweet filling that has all us hungary bastards qued up around the bakery salivating. Bentley, Modric, Gio, are more than boro can handle. They will be a force to be reckoned with. But the real punishment will come from Mr. Bent.
Oh, of course, Mishka's help would be nice, if he's snapped out of his funk. But we won't come to tatters if he show's up with face as long as a fiddle.

Last year? Who cares about what we did or did not do last year. This is the new model for a new age. Its super charged. The fucking carbon fiber turbo sports model.

Throw yourself into the road darling!

3-0.

Bentley, Bent, Jenas. Maybe Alves or Downing will get a consolation - but who cares?

I can't believe how excited I am about Bent getting his chance...I actually want to see him succeed more than watch DiMisera Blerbatov float around the pitch making nice touches but not fighting for the team. SELL HIM!!

I can't say I got too excited about breaking into the Top Four last year. It was obvious that none of the deficiencies that supporters on websites like this had complained about had been remedied. Namely CD, DM, LM and Midfield Napoleon-type. Now that the rats have left/are leaving but Bent has shown his potential, El Ramos has an idea or two and the midfield looks like dynamite with a solid bottom (come on King, don't let those knees go all a trembly), I'm guessing 4th-7th with the variable being mentality.

Bang on. It's in their hands now. At least any high hopes this time out are based upon the corrective action that's been taken. My guess is that that isn't over yet either and I don't mean this window. January there'll be a second wave.

Really lookin' forward to this season. Something special WILL happen for us in 08/09.

Isn't the next chinese new year, the year of the cockerel? Doesn't Lennon's eyebrow have mystical powers? Surely Johnny's toothy, impish grin will dazzle opposition defenders? Is it possible that Juande will be able to conduct interviews in perfect english with Norff Landaahn accent?

I just want a melon! LINK

Am quietly confident that this is going to be an amazing year. Taken from the Guilhem Blague Website relating to potential Arshavin etc arrivals is this quote:

'...a source at the club said, "We'll just have to see how these melons taste when we open them up." '

Taken in a different context, it could just mean we're going to rip open Boro and enjoy every single minute. No more am I going to worry about tactics, players etc. We have a very very capable team and the operative word is 'team', coupled with an extremely astute and clever manager.

I've just watched Martin Jol and his new troop take on Klinsi's Bayern in the grand Bundesliga opener. Paul Potts (of X Factor shame) is for some reason a huge star in them parts, and actually opened the show with a rendition of 'nessun dorma' amid fire juggling acrobats, dancers and fireworks. The real drama however was the lack of disciplined defence, the long ball punts, and the we'll try and score one more than you tactics that MBJ has his new team playing.

I certainly won't miss that. No wonder we didn't really believe last year! It eventually got him a 2-2 result tonight, however having now seen the Ramos approach pre-season, even with as yet a still slightly incomplete Ramos moulded team, somehow the butterflies have departed and I am simply waiting for the 3 points come 5 o'clock.

However large the win is for Spurs, I will predict now that this will taste sweeter than any other season in my living memory.

Glory Glory awaits.

What with last season's kippered opener leaving an underlying stench still hanging around my minds eye level grill, I predict a 4-0 Spurs win but would actually take a 1-0 og win as a triumph of relief over utter despondency.

I see that not only has maureenio given us his verbal jinx for the 2nd year running but that his replacement phat phil has taken up the baton by declaring us as one of eight teams (yes, you heard right) capable of challenging for the premiership title. A gentleman maybe but a scolar i don't think so.

appetite duly whetted Harry..

the thing about tomoro's game is that if we play anywhere as near as good as we've been playing all pre-season, then Boro just won't / don't have an answer...

however, it being the first day of the season and all, i'm sure the Boro faithful, god bless them, will be looking for blood..

so at the very least they'll put it up to us in a way that you just don't get in pre-season friendlys..

all signs point to a 4-0 win for Spurs.. but Spurs being Spurs it'll probably be 1-1..

exciting times though..

Berb to score if he plays, otherwise Benty...

couple of random questions here guys...
1. has anyone looked at the players profile page on the website and if so could anyone tell me where Ghaly, Stalteri, Lee are cos they seem to have disappeared off of there and you hear nothing of them these days!! Which i might add i view as a good thing, even if there are only 20 players on there!!
2. Does anyone else think that (in pre-season at least) that Assou-Ekotto has really come back playing superbly at LB letting Bale have free reign of the LM role and giving Ramos option down the left, something we havent had for a long time!!
3. Anyone else as optimistic as me about the coming season?
Think im getting too excited but also have that slight expectation that things could go wrong after last year so keeping it all crossed, something the girlfriend aint too happy about but she'll get a shafting when we win... well, if im in any fit state to when i get home from the pub!!
My Prediction... 1-3 Spurs (Bent and Giovani and Bentley)

Spurs probably fortunate not to go into half-time a goal down, as Boro had goal generously disallowed.

We started well, passing the ball around - although pace a bit slow, I thought - but Boro gradually forced us back from their final third, where we now seem a bit short of initiative.

Bent hasn't seen much of the ball, but Modric has a lovely turn and forward vision, and Gio has shown some class once or twice.

Whenever Boro get the ball I'm trying to knock it off their feet with my cursor, but I think I have software problem, as it doesn't work. ;)

We were completely dominated in the 1st half. Quick observations:

- we're massively weaker down the left this season, especially on defence. Every Boro attack is down that side. WTF is Bale doing on the bench?
- Huge stepdown in class upfront with Bent & Dos Santos. 2 great crosses from Zokora & Modric would have been goals last season.
- 4 horrible mistakes by Dawson in 1st half. A better club would be up by 3-0. He has to improve or it's going to be a long season. Woodgate has been very strong, though.

Try any from here LINK

Yes, not looking great. There's a lack of balls in midfield - by which I mean cojones, not the inflatable thingies.

If it's a reality-check for the lads, then all well and good after the pre-season euphoria. It's only half-time of the first game, so it's far too early to cast judgements. The quality and method is there, but the momentum may just take a little longer than we'd like it to arrive. Even so, I believe it will arrive.

why did we take dos santos off? he was our best player?

plus points: gomes looks much better than robinson. dos santos is quality. we now know not to put bentley in the middle. (we didn't play him in the middle during pre season so why do it on the first day of the season?)

we need to win more headers. we won none. arshavin will not improve this side.

we need a replacement for dawson.

berbatov actually seemed to care (when we scored he told someone to collect the ball from the net).

bent was too isolated.

arsenal looked woeful, so not all bad. they were luck to play at home against relegation fodder.

middlesborough could challenge the uefa pack for 5th - 8th place.

why can we not play at home on the first day?

I'm not totally down about this result. We always get a tough away fixture to start off the season. However, I think Modric is going to struggle, at least this season. We desperately need an athletic, competitive and assured DM. And Ramos has to play Gunter (until Hutton fit) and Bale at FB. Zokora simply isn't up to the job in any position - why can't Ramos see that? And we need King to play CB - I thought he was supposed to be fit. What's going on there?!

No need for panic, can't say I'm that surprised with today's result. We were spoilt in pre-season but this team is going to take time to gel in the Prem. Certainly looks like Modric and Gio are going to need a few more matches under their belts.

Don't lose the faith and get on the player's backs, support the boys, the results will come and this is only one game. Fair play to Boro they did well, we'll still finish above them though.

So, it's official, we do indeed never learn. For the 3rd season running we have a good build up and then crumble at the first sight of the real deal after several players have used the national press to make premature statements to the effect that we now declare ourselves top 4 and even premiership challengers. How big a fool do we look now? And how I can't wait to meet the rival fans at work.

A midfielder in defence, a right footed left winger, a lightweight midfield in general, no midfield general, a 2nd rate centre-back.

It should have course been 3-1; the first goal was fine. And and how amusing that our first goal of the campaign was a gratuity from last season's 13th placed club.

Swearing's too easy so I'll just say, oh my!

Zokora is not a right back, never will be. Asso Ekoto (or whatever the spelling is) was 3rd if not 4th choice left back last season behind Lee, Bale and O'Hara, yet he starts today? Bently can play right or middle, not left, surely Lennon would've been a better bet out there to test wheater. And bar Berbatov we had no match winner on the bench. Maybe we aren't as strong as I thought. Very defensive bench, we need more attacking players. Arshavin plus a striker. Santa Cruz please. Jenas was terrible, he really is an enigma.

Gomes: Poor for both goals, hope he does turn out to be Robbo's long lost cousin from Brazil

BAE: Good covering at times, piss poor passing at times.

Zokora: Quite simply, not PL standard, AKA shite.

Dawson: Where is the player of 2 seasons ago? A mere shadow now.

Woody: Thank God he plays for us. Solid throughout the game.

Jenas: New season, same old Jermaine. Get ball, run at defenders, lose ball. Repeat ad nauseum.

Modric: Welcome to the Prem son, you can only improve.

Bentley: Can do much better with his delivery as we know, must have been put off by Zok's overlapping runs?

Lennon: I know it's only the start of the season, but I see nothing has changed from him. Deservedly subbed.

Johnny Dos: Started brightly, but big difference between pre season and PL. Like Luka, will adapt.

Bent: Got no change out of Wheater or Huth, supply was shit anyway. At least he didn't sucuumb to any pointy shouty syndrome.

SUBS

Berbatov: Just killing time.. Fuck Off you disinterested, glory hunting, squirrel feeding fuck.

Boy Bale: Made a difference down the left, not helped by the passing of his team mates.

O Hara: If others showed the same desire to get forward, we might have got something from the game. Needs a run in the team like last year.

Overall, a piss poor effort.
Now the new boys know what's expected of them.
Didn't Ramos tell them pre season was over?

Hmm, so we're not a team yet. No huge surprise.

On the plus side...

-Woody was immense & Gomes looks good.
-Bently/Bale will terrorise if fit and working their natural wings.
-The glimmers we saw of possession football and gear-change-attacks should put lesser teams to the sword.
-JOH is a nutter of the highest calibre.
-Didi put in a cross! (I like to take my plus-points where i can get 'em when it comes to DZ ;))

Yeah alright, the bad points are there to see, and have been mentioned. We're still light in key areas, and have got a lot of gelling still to do with what we've got.

Zokora made a few functional stops before lapsing into aimless forward-to-sidways runs, taking himself out of position.

Midfield lacked steel; and the fluid, pacey attack that should have bamboozled the opposition didn't manifest. Modric seemed too deep to be of consequence, and Bentley's skills were squandered by stationing him on the left.

Bent has explosive power, but lacks the tricksy imagination of Berbatov. To cap it all, their second was scored by a fat bloke.

Last season I got so used to my weekends ending at 5 o'clock on Saturday. On this performance, this season promises the same.

To be serious. It will take time for the team to gell and Boro are a bit of a bogey team for us.

Our main problem is up front where we have had a terrific scoring partnership who seemed capable of scoring at any time in most games. Bent does not look any where near the standard of Berba and Bob and pre-season means nothing the Prem is where it counts.

From the back of my limo heading south i review for you:

Spurs showed glimpses of the slick passing that I witnessed in Holland, but we seemed to be trying to switch and change a little too much and as such nobody had a defined position. Dos Santos who had been so effective in pre season coming in from the left, was deployed wide right for a lot of the game, intermittent with Lennon and Bentley in a kind of switching system; but it just looked a little too much too soon. Dos Santos was lively in the first half, Modric and Bentley were average. Bent didn’t really get any decent chances to be worth evaluating, and he sorely missed a link man. This should have been Modric, but for the most part he was playing a dual holding role with Jenas which just didn’t work. During the second half Modric played a little more assertively, but nothing amazing. Jenas was trying to spur the team on and made some good runs, but as is often the ending, nobody could keep up with him and he ran into walls. Assou Ekkoto is an enigma. In a 352 wingback formation, a la England in Euro 96, Assou Ekotto would be the ultimate left wing back. His attacking speed often caught out the ‘boro defence, and his some of his crosses were out of the David Ginola handbook, but he left holes too often. He is a solid player but perhaps better utilised as a left wing - Time shall tell. Dawson was pretty and ‘last-season-like’ for the whole game, and is without doubt the weak link in the team. King’s presence on the bench tells us 3 things; one, he is being saved for ‘bigger games’, two, if he isn’t ready now he never will be, and three, we need a replacement ASAP as this was a ‘smaller team’ and Dawson was out of his league. Woodgate was rock solid, and Zokora played well in the unfamiliar right back role. Gomes looked solid and couldn’t do much about either goal.
Gomes 6
Zokora 7
Woodgate 8.5
Dawson 5
Assou-Ekotto 7
Bentley 6
Jenas 6
Modric 6
Lennon 6
Dos Santos 7
Bent 6

Subs
Bale, Berbatov, o Hara

Bale looked sharp, Berba was trying to find gaps, and O’Hara was sweating blood.

From what was seen today, it was clear that the players are still learning their roles. We need a midfield player to take the ‘behing the striker’ role as Bent didn’t have enough support. Berba being on the bench surely means he’s off. Bentley needs to be played wide right and not left. Dos Santos should be wide left. Zokora or Huddlestone need to come in at DM and let Modric and Jenas move up field, as today they were far too deep and constantly covering each other; reminiscent of the Gerrard/Lampard England problem of them not being able to compliment each other due to a lack of the anchor man.

I will leave with one thought. For all our signings, (and don’t get me wrong I think they are great signings), think back to the end of last season. What areas did almost every Spurs fan know that we needed strengthening in?

Answer. A decent centre back to cover Ledley. A solid Midfield General to play DM. A replacement for Defoe. A left footed winger.

Now look at our signings. All wonderful players arguably, but no CB, no DM, and although Dos Santos is left footed he was playing right. And we have 1 Striker with the part time Bulgarian doing the off. Bale looks as though he could play left mid, but I can’t help thinking that he would be more effective at left back, flying down the flank on the overlap. If Zokora is our DM, then he must play at DM and not right back; we have Gunter to cover that. If Zokora is not the DM, then a) where is Huddlestone??, or b) Ramos is flicking through his contact book as I write this, desperately trying to fill the whole before Aug 31.

The point is, players ought to barred from making outrageous claims that they're ready to challenge for the highest honours. Use some intelligence, guys. Tell us your intention is to win every game, that's all. Absurd statements of personal and team aspirations only return like chickens, to roost at the end of the season.

And on the first day of the season.

So, in future, keep it shtum. Win games, let the points do the talking and the trophies will take care of themselves.

I must admit, in my heart of heart, I felt a disappointment was likely, so I was prepared. It still hurts like fcuk, though. I refuse to believe the team won't gel and improve. Pessimism won't make me feel better or help me appraise the coming games objectively. This was our real, hard-core, in-your-face pre-season, and the new boys' introduction to the PL. Now they, and the rest, have to suck up and deal

Over the past few wekes, Ramos kept saying that it was performances, not results, that mattered. Maybe the lads took that a little too literally. Ironically, most of us would have taken a result over a performance today.

I'm not glad the team lost but, after their pre-season exuberance, losing is a leveller. It will adapt and respond.

Pre-season was a series of comfortable rehearsals. Today, on the day of the opening performance, maybe the cast got stage-fright.

They will get better.

I cant believe Im gonna say this, but im happy the score was what it was...
It lets Ramos know we are nowhere near what he hoped we were in pre season.

Aint we lucky there's still 2wks before the transfer window closes.

We need a veloso or a serious HOLDING MIDFIELDER.

DAWS is a Liability as Ive always said, he dont even deserve to be back up, he's just one of those players who you know will always make a mistake (a big one).

Ramos was dying to bring on another striker that cared about playing for us, and al he had on the bench was Berba-soonoff.

Those three signing and Arshvin should make the difference we need.

I think we were lightweight in midfield, mainly coz of Jenas, he cant play every game.
We passed if well at 1st but then with the chances we made we couldnt finish them.
That was the main problem, then that gave Boro confidence.

The Mido goal just rubbed our faces in it, I couldnt help smiling.

We can still finish 4th, its only one game
Ar5ena1 looked ordinary AT HOME!
Liverpool look ordinary.

We're playing away from home, so calm down guys, dont over react.

Wow - that was really dissapointing, with pre-season hopes coming crashing down to Earth.

Indeed, as some have said - despite all our buys, it's painfully obvious we still lack a DM, CB, LW and striker.

Plus side... liked seeing our keeper throwing the ball to our own players - rather than Robbo hoofing it long only for a teamate to lose out on a 50/50 ball. Makes sense to keep tthe ball when you have it.

But Jenas is forever frustrating. No steel in midfield whatsoever. Bentley and Zokora played out of position -- why was this necessary?Dawson was the worst player on the pitch (what has happened to him? and I thought King was supposed to have been healthy now?

Dos Santos and Modric will come good.

Gus_Poet - best post of the day, all good points. Modric plays DM for Croatia, but was sure we were going to put him in more of an attacking role. His distribution was solid all game, the passes were just coming from too far back on the pitch.

The worst player I've seen in the 4 EPL matches today by far was Dawson. I counted 9 mistakes, and 6 lost marks - 3 of which ended up in goals.

I was 100% certain that Dawson would be a bit player from the bench this season, which is the best he can offer. If King isn't healthy enough to start then why was Gardner let go, and why the f*k didn't JR sign a CB?

Lost a lot of respect for JR today. Besides the Dawson debacle, team selection was dismal and his adjustments weren't very good (Dos Santos was our best player, Bentley/Lennon should have come off. Also, he never corrected for Boro's constant attacks down our left. Ekotto was burned all match & look lost at the back)

there were obviously a couple of selections that raised eyebrows but if anything ramos knows now that we cant do with one up top...

we cant just suddenly assume that bentley, modric, dos santos and the likes aren't up to scratch. arsenal and liverpool were poor today too...

Spot on. This guy has an agenda and is no real Spurs fan. Vincenzo, take your "safe as houses" piffling £45 dirty money and shove it where the sun don't shine.

I myself normally subscribe to the Peter Cook rule. ie. always bet on Spurs to lose, then if we win you don't care about the lost money if we lose you have some cash to console you.

Unfortunately blind optimism led me astray and I bet on a Spurs win. I followed your link but didn't take the advice as I already had a betfair account. Ah well, normal service has been resumed.

He couldnt even manage to get fit for the first game.

Second. Bent. What the fuck were we thinking , pre season optimism gone mad, this man cant lead our line. he is a about as much use as a plank of wood up front.

Thanks daytripper. I also find it ironic that Dimi was the only player in a white shirt who looked dangerous in attack. Despite a midfield chaulked full of passers, Bent was starved of service. The situation improved when Berb came on, and I sensed the Bulgarian's frustration when he called for Bent to return a pass for what would have almost certainly been a goal, only to watch Bent try his luck from a more accute angle and fail. If he didn't want out before, he must certainly will after today's display. Just hope if/when he goes (hopefully to Barca NOT Manure) that we are able to replace him with another striker of similar class and ability. Smoothbum is a great player, but will he be able to play up front in a 4-4-2? No. Kanoute? No thanks, been there done that. Too old, too much money. I hope DL & JR have a master plan, cuz surely this ain;t the finished article?

Not Wanted:
BAE (pass it to us not them you muppet) Dawson (FFS get you were beaten on every goal -- even the disallowed one -- go back to Nottingham Forrest and try not to lose you bearings on the way)

I cannot believe what I saw this afternoon. Flashes of promise punctuating an utterly miserable lack of ambition and creativity.

Gomes, Bale, Woody and Bale do not deserve to be lumped in with this criticism. The rest including the manager do. I hope they get it together before sunderland blow into town.

another thing, from the bbc website:

"With summer signing Keane making his league debut up front alongside Torres, much was expected from Liverpool's £46m strikeforce.

But Keane failed to sparkle throughout and he was taken off six minutes before Torres' late strike."

Up to a point, Dawson could be forgiven for errors he made last season, as he was partnered by the clueless Kaboul and marshalled by Robinson. But, considering he now has two excellent examples to learn from (in Woodgate and King), and has had the opportunity of learning his trade anew under Ramos and Poyet, it was astonishing to see how feeble was his effort to defend our goal today.

One of King's remarkable qualities is that he disposes himself almost exclusively to defend. His first thought and primary motive is to stop the opposition scoring. The same can't be said of Zokora and Huddlestone, when they deputise at Centre-Back. Nor can it said of Dawson, who doesn't appear to understand the meaning of 'Thou shalt not pass'.

Jenas still polarises opinion. To do him justice, I think he's a fine player and an excellent athlete. He's neither useless nor (as some would insist) worse than useless. But, to do us justice, I simply don't think he's good enough. Perhaps he (and a few others) are unclear what their roles are at present. Is he attacking or defending? Which position is best? I don't know. But it's fair to say he ought to able to to a reasonably decent job of either. I was baffled when he was made vice-captain because, at the back of my mind, I always felt that he - along with Zokora, Dawson, Huddlestone and a few others - might be employed as transitional labour. I supposed that, after the first wave of outgoing personnel, there would be a second next year, making way for the next wave of incoming. I still think that may be the case but, if it's not, this season must surely be the 'last chance saloon' for some players, including Jenas, Zokora and Dawson.

As for King, his ongoing absence is like that crazy situation at work where, due to sickness, your team is under-staffed in a key area but, for some reason, the management insists of waiting for the regular encumbent to return. Meantime, the consequences pile up around you. It's a kind of insanity.

yid16 - Keane had absolutely no service today, and just like Berbatov & Bent he had to go to midfield to get any touches. Difference for them is they have 2 great mids out at the Olympics - we have no excuses.

My happiest part of the day was watching Chimbo suck big time - if the game was at Anfield he would have caused 2 pk's. Every time he tried to go forward, Keane screamed at him, and absolutely would not allow him go past midfield (great coaching by Roy!).

Is anybody else as disappointed in Bentley as I am? Did we have any clue his defending was so dreadful? The 1st half Boro, attacked relentlessly down our left, then when JR moved Bentley to the right and brought on Bale, they switched to our right flank, blew through David and really exposed Dawson & Zokora. His corners were poor, I can't recall any good passes, and he looked shaky on both shots.

Fuck sake -. I hate sunday newspapers when we lose. I hate when we lose full stop, especially when we play totally rubbish. That was very disappointing. What will change with the arrival of Arshavin? And where will he play? Behind Bent? On the left? Do we need him at all? Is Dos Santos doing to feature more up front or on the left? I need answers.
My choice would be Bentley, Modric, Jenas, Giovani, Arshavin and Bent completing the frint 6. Though really, Jenas isnt good enough, Hudd hasnt made the expected step up and Lennon is a limited footballer with exceptional pace. In an ideal world we'd keep a happy Berbatov, Sign Diarra or Mikel and Arshavin, complete the Corluka deal and sign up Capel - that would be a complete squad with real quality.
We'll just have to wait and see - but beat by a poor middlesborough will hopefully have opened Ramos's eyes.

I start thinking ahead, and pondering on what seem like oncoming trains - such as next week's game, for example, in which fate (like Mido today) could easily laugh at us, by conspiring that our former players overturn us. Insanely, I begin to calculate the possible number of points available from the remaining 37 games, setting aside the inevitable zeros and adding together the desperately few threes; and I agonise over whether it will be enough to keep us up.

There ought to be some protection against this, such as a Sanity Clause. But I donta believe inna Sanity Clause.

lads, this was the first game of the season. there are too many unknowns. we played a notoriously tricky opposition away (for the fifth year in a row) and lost. we were not shat on. we just didn't get it right in the defensive midifeld area. this will be overcome. jenas should probably be dropped for o'hara but i cannot see this happening.

we should not worry. the lost points, at this stage is nothing to worry about as long as the team realised where we went wrong. we walked in to this game full of too much self belief. we thought we could turn up today and pas it around conmfortably.....not in the premier league. we put some nice moves together but did not maintain focus. this was a big lesson for the team.....it will take time. but let's not jump on thier backs. we need to support this group. they are spurs boys, and actually look like resmebling a team for the first time in years.

Deja Vu?

I feel like I've gone back 12 months in time.

New signings, attacking flair, millions spent investing in youth, same old GLARING problems exist.

We played with one defender yesterday.

Our back four (bar Woodgate) were absolutely ABYSMAL.

Jenas - Nowhere, Bent - Nowhere, Lennon - Nowhere, King - LITERALLY Nowhere.

Modric looked out of his depth, Bentley's 'top class' delivery ranged from 'terrible' to 'tragic.'

Dos Santos showed glimpses of speed and dash but was largely unsupported.

Berbarov played his last game for us and we are completely screwed without him, he was the only player that showed any invention or creativity.

He created out best chance of the match and should have been given the chance to finish it by our CAPTAIN Jenas. Jenas showed no leadership skills whatsoever and was hardly a presense that a captain should be.

I am gob-smacked, I really do hope this is a false indication of things to come.

And on a side note, Robbo's Blackburn got up, Keano's Liverpool did the same and so to did Gardner's Hull.

Infact, Teemu/Pascal and Steed's Sunderland played a more attractive and effecive brand of football than us.

Where do we go from here? We are going to continue to leak goals, Corluka or any other signing isn't going to fix this.

Testing times ahead after to much optimism.

This biggest mistake was to make Jenas vice captain for this season. The boy can barely motivate himself let alone ten other team mates. This decision also implies that he's going to play every game and I don't believe that he and Modric can play in the same team without someone (Hudd? O'Hara?) holding things together behind them, especially if we've got both fullbacks bombing forward. If Jenas is forward then it's up to Modric to sit back and deal with the likes of Essien and Gerrard counter-attacking and to be honest I don't fancy his chances. He should be using his obvious talents at the other end of the pitch.
No Bale, no Ledley, no Berb, no holding midfielder, no chance. A very lightweight and naive team selection from Ramos especially considering we were away from home and that our bench represented a more balanced team.
On the bright side, Keane looked shit.

A new season dawns, a whole bunch of new talented players but the same old problem. Us Spurs fans are a faithful, hopeful bunch. We always believe that the best is yest to come and yet again we cannot take points off of teams like Middlesbrough. I think that we have to accept that Bent has flattered to deceive during pre-season and cannot perform when it matters. Jenas has been missing longer that Steve Fossett (Genius idea to make him vice captain!). I have never been convinced of the merits of Zokora especially played out of position. My prediction is that we will probably ship less goals that last season now that we have replaced Robbo but the defensive frailities of old remain. The only difference being that come next week our only cutting edge up front will be Darren Bent. Give him a chance I hear you cry...£16 million wasted.

I'm embarrassed by some of the comments some have made above. Some of you are the reason why Spurs fans are called FICKLE. Unless your name is Mystic Meg, and can predict next weeks lottery numbers, stop predicting the future of this season and get back to reading your feckin pot noodles.

I agree with Kwakspur, this was a result that we needed in the first month of the season. A loss to an average Boro team that wanted it more than we did, and knew what their tactics were. Sometimes when you have alot of talent to hand, you've got so many options that you don't quite know how to apply it. It was obvious that Boro away was a bit of an experiment. Luckily failure is a better teacher than success, and we will be stronger because our lesson was in the first game.

JGM's 100% right. Preseason means nothing and it possibly made us think we are better than we are. We've still got 14 full days of the transfer window left and so a loss not only addresses our failings but clearly highlights our shortfalls whilst we can do something about them.

There have been several occurrences of FUROR recently. Excitement following CC win, after twatting Roma 5-0, but at the same time there is the anger and misery following the end of last season, and the loss to Boro yesterday. One of the magical things about the beautiful game is its ability to incite such extreme ranges of feelings. Be careful that you're in control of these, lest they end up controlling you.

As BillyG said, lots of us have kept saying "In Ramos we trust". How many of you really meant it/ still mean it? If you really are that fickle, fuck off and support Manure! If you really believed that this can be a great season, then keep the FAITH.

Agree with a lot of what you say Trembly (& love the name by the way!)
My own thought is that last year showed we had some glaring weaknesses,
1. Goalkeeper
2. Defensively (Both as a team and individualy a back up for Ledders)
3. Lack of bite (aggression, someone to scare the opposition and who won't take losing lying down - i'm thinking Graham Roberts!)
4. Lack of on field leaders

The main strength being having four quality strikers and getting goals most games.

In terms of the weaknesses the only one of the above we've addressed is getting rid of Robbo (thank god did you see Arteta's goal!)
The main strength has gone in that we only have two strikers and one of those looks like he'll be off!
All the signings look good however and we look to have more creativity in midfield. We still look gash at the back and if Bent goes down injured and who's going to play upfront?
We don't scare anyone, don't look like we'll keep too many clean sheets wither!
Look at Arse and the scousers they were gash but kept a clean sheet and came away with three points.
I'm sure we'll get better as the team gel and like the look of J2S but I hope JR and DL have got a centre half lined up, a quality defensive midfielder and another forward (2 if berba goes). This is almost half a team still missing and without some serious additions we'll struggle to get 5th (very little chance of more I'm sad to say as things stand)

Same old Spurs!

I'm off to put a few quid on one of our old boys scoring the winner next week! its sod's law!!!!!!!

Positive visualisation is the key. If we all truly believe, it will happen.. Ref game against Keano's boys (because there's only one Keano), I'd like Steeeeeeeeeeeeeed/or Teemu to score a late consolation goal but only after we're 5-0 up.

PS I reserve the right to go completely mental and smash the place up if:
1. We don't get sufficient cover/improvement for key positions (we all know what these are)
2. We are not able to get at least 35 points on the board by Christmas

I feel like I've gone back 12 months in time.

New signings, attacking flair, millions spent investing in youth, same old GLARING problems exist.

We played with one defender yesterday.

Our back four (bar Woodgate) were absolutely...

The real worry is, that the main reason we've scored over 200 goals in the last 2 seasons is about to depart and we are left with our 4th choice striker from last year.

Darren Bent : One footed , poor in the air and poor first touch.

It's not one game though is it? It's about 21 years! The last time we had a decent pair of fit centre backs (Gough & Mabbs) and apart from 12 months from Super Ed we've not had a decent defensive midfielder / hardman since about the same time (Roberts, before that? Mckay?)
So in answer to your comment 'its just one game', its not cos we've had the same problems year after year and we never have a decent defence and defences win titles simple as.

Trying to take some positives if in the next week we buy a quality CB, Hutton, Bale, Woody and King stay fit for most of the season, we sign a quality DM and two forwards (or 1 + sulky) we could get in the CL!

If we sign Owen I think we'll be known as Tottenham Oompaloompah. I don't think Ramos would even consider him.

I regard King as highly as any other fan, but this farce over his part-time ability to participate is wrecking the team. I'm not suggesting for one minute that he be escorted off the premises, but how can you criminally neglect the fulcrum of defence and initial distribution? It's kak.

We need a centre-back. He doesn't have to be a star. He just has to be competent and capable. He just has to be a rock, along with his partner, upon which our defence is based. No flair required. No fancy-dan. No romantic, Mills and Boon-sounding name. Just some geezer who is prepared to say, 'Oh no you don't', and take the necessary action if that's not enough.

I don't even know what King's ailment is, or what it's officially reported to be. It seems to have started in some primordial world beyond human memory. At this rate, by the time he's back to full fitness he'll be nearing retirement anyway. Yes, the man's a Rolls-Royce when he's fully operational and his chassis has been oiled. Yes, he's Tottenham through and through. But, shit, I'm Tottenham through and through. You lot are Tottenham through and through. I'm so Tottenham through and through that, if I were a hindrance to the cause, I'd say, "Look, guys, I'm holding you back - gone on without me." What's the deal? Why can't the club be straight with us? Something is at the core of this, and it has to be more than creaky knees.

Thinking about the match, I wonder if Ramos considered a loss acceptable, if it allowed him to experiment further with the side. But I can't see what more he could learn that pre-season hadn't already told him. Our midfield was so lightweight. Why not use Hudd, rather than Lennon? At least Hudd can pass consistently.

At any rate, we were always likely to come off second-best. Everyone's up for the first game of the season. I thought skill would win the day. Basic dermination did.

It's ironic that, at a time when Spurs are potentially in a position to play a style of football that employs passing, movement and little dynamic triangles - a bit, dare I say, like that scum up the road - that selfsame scum up the road talks about compromising style in order to win matches.

Another campaign with nothing to show for it has forced their dirty little hand, has it? Maybe.

With delightful timing, Spurs now propose to start wearing the 'beautiful game' mantle and receive the plaudits of all and sundry. And win fcuk all?

I could live without a trophy this season, if we got fourth place. But I want both. And more.

I see that stinking pile of arrogant, smug excrement at Old Trafford didn't get the best start to their season either. Hoo-fcuking-ray.

It's not the end of their season, any more than it is ours. But I'm betting, relatively speaking, they'll be more disappointed than us at the end of the season.

Fcuk 'em. And fcuk the self-satisfied horse they ride into town on as well.

Slightly curious selection aside, I think we can all still see there's a lot of promise in the team. HH suggested the horse-trading will probably carry on in January too, so some handy pack animals are no doubt on the way :)

And in the meantime, as someone commented on the BBC today, hey, Manure only got 2 points out of their first 3 games last time out ;)

Looking at our team we've only two strikers and three CB's with the first team (one of whom is gash, one of whom is always injured, the likes of Rocha doesn't count). What worries me is that we need these two gaps filling and I can see us siging a couple of players but I can't see us signing 3 players in two weeks with the amount of hassle involved with buying decent players (clubs not wanting to sell etc). As such I'm getting very worried the defensive midfielder is not going to come before 31st.

But seriously, you wonder where the new recruits are going to come from, and how they'll gel. Against Boro, Teemu might've offered more bite than Lennon, but that's neither here nor there now. The first game is always going to be a hoop and fire, and you need players who are willing to get burnt.

Silly? do you really want a miserable fucker like that in the team only to leave in January? you really have your tongue up berbatovs arse huh? if we can beat roma, we can beat anyone. it was a rude awakening to the EPL for the new signings, no more no less.
give em a couple of games to gel in the games that matter and see the difference. ramos will obviously buy another striker ya knob, berbatov is gone and bent cant do it all himself. my only criticism of ramos is playing players out of position and leaving our 1st choice on the bench! whats that all about? why o why didnt he play the same team as last sunday?? why play bentley on the left? why play zokora right back when guntner is on the bench? why not play bale? been here before i think.

1981 don't start dissing Gus. He's giving an interview to the press - what do you expect him to say "Yeh we screwed up big time"?

This season, last season and the past 21 years are completely different. The great thing about supporting a club that has such heritage is that you can reflect on triumphs past and and bask in memories of Glory. What some people seem to prefer to do is dwell on past losses and their failure to temper their unbridled expectations with a dose of reality. There seems to be an epidemic of sorts running wild where everyone wants everything now - fuck whether its realistic, fuck whether its affordable, fuck the mortgage: I want a new car, I want a 60" LCD, I want Villa in for £35m. Building a new team is a process, your expectations seem to be that its should gel instantly and be the finished product for the first match. Get real!

We're still in the market for players, and we'll probably be in the January market as well, so hopefully some big asks will be granted within the next two weeks. If not, it won't be for a lack of trying and we won't have blown all our kitty on nearly-men when the ones we wanted aren't available.

With regards to Ramos' tactics and line up: Go and win 2 UEFA cups in a row, and challenge Real and Barca with a fifth of the budget and then I might listen to you. Till then STFU and bear in mind that perhaps in his mind, this tactically was the best starting line up. Some things may have worked in training, that didn't on the day. We saw a few times that some of the boys were having off days, and perhaps our General was contriving something so special that the players couldn't quite understand. Its the first time in a real Premier League game for some and so lessons will have been learned. Expect a different game, line up and strategy for each opposition. Just because its not a simple 442 - try and keep up will you? We're dealing with a connoisseur that serves you a glass of vintage, and you ask for a feckin pint of beer!

How many times do people need to be told? This is a marathon not a sprint, 1 game does not make a season.

Do you honestly believe that you're the only one that has noticed some deficiencies? Can you be so naive to imagine that any/all of your points have not been considered by people more experienced in the game than you or I?

Well, if we can't be positive we can at least refrain from being negative. (Although negativity has its pluses - without it, we couldn't turn a light on!)

Positives to emerge will be the acute learning curve the players have the chance of jumping on. Gus, aka Mr Motivator, will make sure they take it.

Ramos is a sly old fox still getting to grips with the fauna of the PL but, once he does, he'll go hunting for fun and make the feathers fly.

This - and maybe a couple more matches - will be the opening engagements of the campaign. The General is not just testing the enemies' strength, but his troops' own mettle and the most favourable options of their deployment.

We're not the only side with shortcomings, but we're probably among the few who can afford to addres them. There will be injuries and bans a-plenty up and down the league.

One swallow doesn't make a summer, and one cloud doesn't mean a storm is coming. C'mon, dudes, this is one impressive haul of talented palying and coaching individuals. Flush the doubts down the lav and open the window. Breath deeply. Fresh air is coming.

And Board should review their policy on selling players, i.e not to do so before geting replacements!

Trying not to sound too negative but
We have two strikers - fact
We have 3 centre backs - fact
Ramos will lead us to the promised land - unknown (hopefully)
We have for years had glaring weaknesses that as every transfer window passes are not addressed (think left mid!)
As for being fickle i think enough people have stated concern about the lack of defensive re-inforcements to know that it was an issue and nothing is changing my mind. Players may gel, we might be trying to bring in top quality players in key positions but if we don't bring in anyone else we are in trouble. As was mentioned, what happens when Woody gets injured? Its Ossie's team part 2!
As for berba, the guy is class shown again in his cameo on Saturday. Even 50% effort is better than 110% from 95% of footballers the fact that we don't have any other forwards in our ranks (aprt from Bent) shows how difficult it is to get quality in so do we really let him walk? Hope not!

Groucho also said: "I've got a good mind to go out and join a club and beat you over the head with it." Which is probably what will happen when The Great Berb joins the thick northerners. But that won't happen til we line up a replacement.

I have a growing uncertainty at the way we are progressing the latest re-development of the team. We have been swamped by noise about Keane, Berbatov, Arshavin, Villa, Pavylu, etc. but this has done nothing but distract attention from what we all pretty much know is needed; a stiffer spine.

Even if we replace Keanatov with players who can score 60 goals between them, we are no further forward overall. We've brought in some midfield talent, but creating chances has not been a problem in the past two years.

Our problem has been the area immediately in front of the centre backs, where we have no-one who can claim and keep that position or the territory it controls. We keep lambasting our Centre Backs and goalkeeper, but we are effectively putting out defence "outside" the castle wall not inside it. No-one is closing down and competing for that precious space and it gives free rein to creative oppo players to draw our defenders, play balls between them for runners, flank our defence or take pot shots. Our defenders are exposed as the first line of defence rather than the last and we are pouring pressure on the likes of Dawson and Kaboul (who I think we will regret selling) and our keepers; Robbo's confidence was not helped by having players running 20 yards then wellying shots from just outside the box and Gomes will soon start scratching his head if it continues.

We have a warchest of God knows how much and will make a fair bit back off of sales, is it not worthwhile to get one or maybe even two established midfield "bosses" in? We are screwing around with forwards which we will need, but not concentrating on the position that pretty much everyone in football agrees we need bar Ramos!

A good defensive midfield general will offer a wall in front of the defence and stop free shooting from 25 yards. I'd rather spend big money here and bring some heart and fight to the team than take punts on expensive cake iceing that might melt in the heat of the EPL.

Finn - your comments make sense, although the flaw in your point is that 1 goal was from a corner the other from a diverterd cross / shot which could have gone anywhere. The fact is if the midfield had played like they had all preseason and created a hatful of chances, we would have won. How many chances did Bent have Saturday? 8O

Finn, psychic are we? Have had a conversation/heart to heart with our General where you got your info straight from the horses? By all means vent your frustrations, wants and desires, but please leave out the comparison of your Championship Manager Playstation skills against one of the best in the business.

There were issues with the way the play turned out such as dannyboy mentioned, a lack of many decent chances for Bent. Your instant solution to this would seem to be get an established DM in? One would definitely be useful but when he's in and we still don't get enough decent service to Bent, what's the solution then? Replace Bent because he's not scoring? And then what, replace the midfield, replace the manager?

We're rebuilding and now have a highly respected and experienced management and a decent base of players, arguably much better than we started the last two seasons with, but still you know better than they do? You must be right, the management are idiots, the board are idiots, the players are idiots - its obvious isn't it - we'll elect you to make all the decisions and Spurs will instantly reclaim all past glories and more. FFS.

Come on all, get a grip ffs. Look at the table - do you really think the likes of Bolton and Hull will still be where they are come the end of the season? We are 1 point behind manure, oh no. GET FUCKING REAL. The foundations are there, just gotta build on them. In Ramos I trust; I suggest you do...

dannyboy, spot on with getting rid of berbastrop. With the chance of him staying, we would be deluding ourselves he'll be a positive influence. With him gone, and with lessons learned from a first day defeat, we can be more realistic and know what we've got to do, who we've got to get in to achieve a successful season.

I said all along that he's been playing his transfer move perfectly (for him and manure that is) and now he's comparing himself to feckin Cantona!

We've not had a focussed Berba for over a year now. Finally losing him this week, would be met with relief - although we'd better get the best possible cash for him.

Psychic? Not at all, and you don't need to be either (nor sarcastic), just read the first few words of the post which clearly show the post is my own "opinion".

I have partly based that opinion on virtually no rumours or links with players in that position, a position which has for the past two years been passed around between Jenas, Zokora, Huddlestone, to name but a few. No-one has yet owned it in any real sense and no-one has shown the capability to meet the demands of that role.

Ramos has come on board with a reputation built outside the EPL, he is reputed to be a cup specialist and closed the final distance for our win earlier in the year, however our league form to date has been very poor. I await another new era, we all do; whether that is inspired by Ramos remains to be seen.

You are right of course that the quality of our player base is arguable. I am pleased with our four signings, but am suprised that we have let Malbranque go, its sad to me that of the three players who got nearly all the votes for Spurs player of the season last term we only have Berbatove left, probably for only a few days more at that.

I don't doubt that THFC are working the problem behind the scenes, but which problem? As I said (through observation not clairvoyance) we have not had a problen creating chances, maybe we might add the words "up till now". But last season we shipped more goals than pretty much anyone bar the relegated; you don't need to be psychic to figure out what needs fixing; I'm sure opinions will vary........

Trembly,

I have had a change of heart, you may recall me saying he needs to stay even at 50% of his prowess he is still good for us; right now and after reading his and his cnut of an agents comments he can FRO.

I can see the changing room after Boro sitting there looking at him in his pompous mode looking down his nose at players like Bentley & O'Hara. Instead they should be looking at him to open the door and piss off to Manure.

sell him for 25 mill, Levy make a statement saying as much as they wanted to keep him it simply wasnt worth holding out any longer.

Get in a hungry striker even if he aint in his technical league, its amazing what confidence can do to a player, with the passion in the squad any player can raise their game.

Lastly; Arshavin deal looks dodgy, shame cos he really wants to wear our shirt, thats what i want to read. Much like Bentley saying he ahd found his home
