There's a Jackie Mason line, you hit forty and you'd marry a chair. That sense of wanting rather than needing kicked in with a lot of Yids this week.
And so Michael Owen has signed for Manchester United.
To my mind, the former darling of En-ger-land will arrive at Old Trafford with an entirely different burden of expectations than had he come to The Lane. They will deploy him sparingly, in cup competitions, lesser European games, that sort of thing.
Had we audaciously swooped, the hopes and dreams of us all would have been pinned upon his creaking frame in every game. And my best prediction is that he would have failed us.
So without being churlish, it's a result we didn't get him in. If you needed any proof just ask any of our existing strikers who are superior in virtually every respect and they will tell you our problem doesn't lie with them, but the hit and more often miss nature of their supply.
To which end I wish the multi millionaire, horse owning, property portfolioing midget well. His departure will be a blessing to Mike Ashley's pocket and a albeit predictable one, it's another blow for the bar code faithful.
Sod'em.

Is Bent really going for 10Mill?
Who is coming in then?
Think we still going to in for a suprise or 2.
COYS.
And come on the new season. I am f ing bored.
Bang on Harry.. he would never complete regular 90 min games.. he is best used sparingly as Madrid did with him and got the best goals per minute player that year..
I said the same my self if we had signed him.. we would have relied on him as a main striker and what we need is four quality strikers we can rely on.. if you already have them then you can afford a part time luxury like Owen.. but signing him now.. would have meant we would have missed out on a proper striker who could have done the business.. as the temptation would be to see him as one of the key 4 strikers we need regularly .. which he would never have been.
Any strong transfer tips with legs?? I like the look of this Cana chap.
I'm disappointed we didn't buy Owen . I was looking forward to us selling Pav and Benty bringing in Ashley Young and Michael Owen thus being able to boast the shortest attack in Europe.
Think of all the plusses :
No more high balls in to the area
Less head injuries
More room in the bath
Cheaper first team kits
Less night club incidents as they won't be allowed in
I really want us to buy Veloso, been an admirer of this chap for ages and his price will on continue to rise with age. He can play in the CM or LM and CB/LB very versatile player. Vagner love would be worth looking at as well, he plays very well on his own up front which is probably gonna be the case if Harry purchases another central midfielder and a left winger, Modric will have to play off the front man, bye bye Keane.
My Wish List of players that might actually sign is:
Veloso
Vagner Love or Luis (I can score a goal from anywhere) Suarez
Bastos
A promising young CB to watch and learn for Woodgate.
Running total: two bullets dodged, counting Cisse.
It's possible that Owen may prove the doubters wrong, but I doubt it.
Is anyone else beginning to get a little concerned about Manager Redknapp? Is it plausible that he has kept his trap shut in public for something like a whole month? Hardly.
Could he perhaps be bound and gagged in secret secret secret dungeons beneath WHL? (in the cell next to Prince Boateng perhaps?). Or on a hush hush mission in Afghanistan? What?
dont think the "bullet" was ever coming our way to begin with as we have defoe who is very similar. however i think owen will prove a lot of people wrong this year, especially signing for united. i fully expect him to fire 15 to 20 goals this year and be back in the england squad for the world cup which IMO think will be of benefit for us all.
Is Bable for sale?
Good Morning, I agree that there would
have been different expectations if he
had come to The Lane. I think he will
do OK at Man United, and wish him well.
Probably be used same as Larsson was.
Going off the beaten track here Harry - has anyone noticed that Keane is nowhere to be seen on the new kit launch posters on the website.
Am I reading too much into this - seems strange that your captain (who was in the original pics) has been taken out of them.
A hidden message within???

Afternoon H, another week gone & like I posted on here last week from a very good source of mine the Bassong deal was dead unlike them other ITK's on other spurs forums claiming the deal was going to be confirmed this week....Oh well we have approx two weeks until pre-season starts and still no ideas what the hells going on personally I can see Downing being a cert unlike the guy Negredo apparently he would rather move to Liverpool or just stay @ Madrid..........We await developments

Haha - brilliant!
Totally agree with you about Dawso, too, ODM. I hope the boy doesn't get cold feet and start looking around for more first team action, as he was absolutely immense for us right up til he got injured.
I don't think we could seriously hope for a better deputy, and he's really come through his off period in the best possible way.
We must also be lucky to have dodged the Arshavin bullet, and caught the one with Keanes name on it
I really think you're wrong on Owen, i think its a pretty good signing for Utd.
Didn't cost any money, we really could've done with him.
Fergusons no mug, and expect to see Owen back in the England fold. Him and Rooney together at club level is exactly what the country need.
Sorry Harry but I completely and utterly disagree.
Owen on a free at a club that is stable and can offer him the time, patience and midfield service he needs has to be a contender for signing of the season.
Only time with tell though.
Disappointed....thought "Missed the Bullet" was going to tell me that we aren't going to docked points because of Defoe's transfer to Pompey involving a an unregistered agent (allegedly)
--- or are we in the clear now?
There really are some morons around. The above quite clearly states that Owen could be a good signing for Manure as strength in depth.
We've got enough fucking players that may or may not come good.
This is a very unnerving beginning to the transfer window.... All quiet on the western front then HH. Itk's have got nothing either. I'm hoping something big is shaking in the trees,'cos there aint no lillywhite gossip in the grain. Boredom and anticipation taking control...lets hope it's not the familiar negative climax.

According to the African press, Redknap is under close investigation from both the African and English authorities.
Apparently, Redknap and his right hand man are 'days' away from facing high court charges of fraud from transfers during their time at Portmouth.
The club is unwilling to partake in any transfer activity until the investigations are concluded.

Transfers suck, our new strips suck and Michael Owen is a w*nk*r!!!
apoloogies for the mood - just so depressed with our summer.

I mean - that's at least three great managers who aren't taken. My tongue was too far pressed into my cheek to concentrate on what I was typing.
Get Glenn Hoddle back, with Gerry Francis as his assistant, Ossie as first team coach and Venables as director of football. surely we couldn't go wrong?????

Don't like Owen, although I admit my opinions are probably emotional and irrational (it's my feminine side, Michael, so don't be angry or I'll cry). Can't help feeling sympathy for Barcode fans, as I suppose them to feel short-changed by Owen's services and commitment. I doubt he ever wanted to go to Toon, and seems to have regarded it as a (rather lucrative) prison. Straddling the privileged position of drawing 10 per cent of the club's wages (true, Ashley was mug enough to pay it), he always seemed (to my mind) to be more interested in playing for England than his club, especially when about to return from injury. There was too much 'I want to get back to form so I can play for my country' and too little 'I just want to play well for my club and return the faith they've shown in me'. His club seemed more like a training-ground for potential England performances. Players only need to remember that, if they play well for their club, their international opportunities will take care of themselves. Now he's at the 'I want to play for England' bombast again. It's true he can only answer the questions he's asked, but it's the same old whine. Oh, and he's cock-a-hoop about being at Manure - in the Champs' League and all that, with an array of top-class player-colleagues. His excitement was barely contained. 'This is the level where I belong' he seemed to be thinking. If he's on a lower wage, well, image rights in a Manure shirt will surely make up for that. Tevez, by the way, wouldn't cross the Manure-Pool divide, ostensibly out of respect for the fans. But not Mr Butter-Wouldn't-Melt-In-His-Mouth, although it's true a few years have intervened.
As for that interest from Hull and Stoke, you had to laugh. Interviewed on a golf course, Owen confessed he hadn't heard about Hull's interest, turning his head sideways and scratching it. Where was Tim Roth when you needed him? 'Hull? If you think I'm gonna play for fecking Hull you gotta be kidding.'

Harry Redknapp:
'I'm looking to strengthen the squad and we've made inquiries for some good players,' said Redknapp. 'But it's very difficult. City have blown us out of the water. Regarding two of the players we were strong on, in the end we could not compete with Manchester City. They are working on another level with the wages they can offer.
'We liked Barry and Santa Cruz but when it came to it we just weren't at the races. The wages they offer have gone sky high. Glen Johnson has gone to Liverpool and is picking up two-anda- half times the wages he was getting at Portsmouth.
'There is no doubt City are making it very difficult for the rest. Barry only had a year left on his contract and would have been a terrific signing for us, but they are probably paying him double what we would have given him, so we had no chance.'
But Redknapp still believes he will start the season with a squad capable of getting Spurs into Europe. 'I think we can pick up from where we left off at the end of last season,' he said, having guided Spurs to eighth after joining them when they were in the bottom three. 'When it comes to signing players it means we have to adjust our sights accordingly.
'If you're clever you can still get good players. Look at Sir Alex Ferguson's signing of Michael Owen. I think he's done well to get him. People may criticise him, but he's taken a player on a free transfer who could go and get 20 goals next season in a team like that. I think it's a fantastic signing and Alex will get as much pleasure out of that if it comes as he would paying ÂŁ30million for Tevez.
'I did that with Kanu. I took him to Portsmouth on a free from West Bromwich and people wondered whether I was mad.
'But he did unbelievably well for me. He scored the winning goal in a cup semi and a final. When you take somebody like that and everybody doubts you there's nothing better when it comes off.
(Cont.....)
'There are players around like that; there are still some bargains to be had, it's just finding the right ones.'
Although Spurs supporters are anxious for transfer action, Redknapp is not prepared to join the transfer market explosion.
'We're not going to rush in,' he said. 'I have spoken to the chairman Daniel Levy and we've decided if we can't get players who will improve the team we're not going to bother. We've already got a decent squad, many of whom are going to get better. But we recognise we have to improve.
'If Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate stay injury-free we'll be strong at centre-half and the goalkeeping situation is much better. After early problems with Heurelho Gomes, he looked a different proposition to the one he was when I took over. We ended the season with two excellent keepers in him and Carlo Cudicini.
'I think the fans were genuinely happy with what happened after I came. When you've only got two points from eight games, you're in trouble, aren't you?
'Confidence was low but by the end of the season we had a great home record. We've got to improve the away results next season. If we can do that we can push to finish in the top six. That has to be our aim and I believe we can achieve it.'

He's right in what he says in a way. The clowns we have couldnt possibly perform any worse, so off course they are going to get better. Bale, Bentley, Bent, Pavs, Gio, Keane, Hutton, Jenas, Huddlestone. All premiership players, all worthy of playing in a top 6 side, all with potential to perform better on a regular basis and owe Spurs and the fans something............. I'd love to see Hutton, Bale and Pavs really star next year, but thats being overly optimistic I know.
Wouldnt have wanted Santa Cruz, glad we missed him, Pavs can be as good. Maxi Rodriguez, Muntari and Negrado would do me.

Nick, wise up, we cant compete financilly with City. If it wasnt for the money Barry would be at Liverpool - we were never going to get him.
Barry wouldn't have gone to Shitty had he been planned as the sole signing.
He was clearly made aware that the club had millions to invest in not just him but many other high-class or world-class players. He signed because he was aware of his part in the greater context.
We couldn't have marketed our club to him on the premise that we'd be also looking to recruit Kaka, Tevez, Terry and sundry others. It would have been him and Joe Ordinary - enough to make any player pause, especially with our track record of stalling careers.

I think its time we face the facts guys. All the real quality players only want to play for one of the top 4 clubs. Any remotely decent player is gonna be snapped up by the wage machine that is Man City. We are gonna be left fighting for the scraps with all the other mediocre teams. Our dreams of a Huntelaar or a Veloso are fading fast. And this is only the beginning. The divide between the top 4/5 teams and the other teams in the PL is only going to widen. Why would players wanna come to Spurs when they can go to Man City for 6 times the wages?? I may just be feeling negative right now but i can see what is happening at Man City as the death of us, i always felt we were the 5th team in the league, even when the table position didnt match this, it always felt like we are a top team. I feel that Man City are gonna steal this imaginary mantle.....

Manchester City will not buy all the best players as there are too many of them.
You are right you are being negative.
10 years ago there was a top two, that Chelsea turned into a top three and now we have a top four. But that will also change and if Manchester City storm into the top four, which is by no means certain, that does not mean we can't join them. If we could finish the way we did with the existing squad then we would not need much more to make some real progress.
I am not interested in being 5th in anything I want a team that can win things.
Definitely too much negativity going on here.
I'm glad we haven't signed another 7 players like we have for the last few seasons. Barry would have been a good buy but I can understand why we didn't get him, nor would I blame him for where he chose to go. The cash injection stirs things up a bit, it may not be entirely fair to all but who cares, it should be fun entertainment, much better than the arseholes and manure slugging it out each year in isolation.
I think our team already possesses a lot of the star names that most teams cry out for, it's actually the unsung hero, or the consumate pro who knows how to win a game that could make the difference for us next year, not necessarily most of the star names that are moving around, other than for Barry.
Another thing, if we are forced to trawl around other teams rejects as some people think, to sign a "fading" star, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, and at the very least we have one of the best managers at doing that.
If we were looking for a striker, right now I'd take Eider Gudjohnson without further thought. In midfield I'm sure there is a player or 2 at Real, for example the little dutch fella who plays centre mid whose name I've completely forgotten, although he would probably still be out of our league.
I'm not fazed by the likes of Real or Citeh going mental with the cash and buying all these "star" names, unless their team is balanced they still won't win, and it will leave some great players very determined to go on and prove their former employers wrong.

I've got to agree with N the G to a certain extent, rather than bleating about players we had no chance of signing, Redknapp and the NSB (new scouty bloke) ought to be doing their utmost to find the 3 players we need.
Any of us can sit here and say, let's get Cruz, Tevez, Barry and Young. I don't want excuses from Redknapp. In the event we don't replace the work-shy with proper players, how will they respond? On recent evidence it will involve whinging and the press.
It's nice to know Redknapp is still alive, but the next time I hear from him I want 'unveilings' not excuses.

We need Wilson more than we need Barry. We have players who can do similar things to Barry, But we've needed a Wilson for a while.
I would be vry happy if Arry can land Peter Crouch.
Pairing him with Defoe or Keano will be fantastic.
He is a nice target for set pieces and is English. Whoop Whoop.

You are probably right, its the level of player we seem to have the potential of attracting. If thsi spanish guy LLorente is the spanish crouch then we may as well just sign Crounch. English speaking, knows the league and wont need settling time.

good shout that with dawson/roberts
As i sit here in my pj's, consisting of my chocolate brown spurs jersey with RJ 9 on the back and mr green combat shorts, watching the premiership years and reliving 'That Win' over the spammers which should have relegated the clowns, I have tingles, butterflies actually. riddled with excitement ahead of the new season - new signings or not. We have a great side, need two great additions and we'll have a great side, one of our best for years.
'my green combat shorts - not mr'

Whoop Whoop Indeed.
I never liked the stringbean before he joined Pompey even watching him play used to irritate me but then I took an interest when he paired with Defoe there and thought they linked well together and I reckon they'd be even better playing under Arry at Spurs besides with all the players we've been linked with better the devil you know eh? I also liked his comment when he was asked "what would you be if you weren't a footballer?", he gained a little respect from me then just for not being boring.
Let us see something of substance harry.
COYS.
