Carry On Touring - Krakow Away

Wednesday, 01 October 08, 11:19 AM · Comments (448)

Frasier Campbell announced earlier today that he, 'believes total concentration on the job in hand is what it will take.'

And Hampshire Old Bill responded by saying that Sol Campbell's probe had been launched.

You couldn't make it up.

With only hope in our hearts and with what Bowie reffered to as 'just a beer light to guide us', so then, to the football.

Wisla Krakow will not unreasonably expect to win this. They left The Lane with a goal and will be reminding themselves that it was by one goal they dispatched Barcelona earlier on. They will also be aware that their support will be nothing shy of fierce on the night. This for them is every inch a home game.

Team selection?

To Jenas or not to Jenas I guess is one quandry. There aren't many others. King will play. Pav and Corluka are personae non grata or similar (I wanted to be a judge but I didn't have the Latin) and we sold half a dozen or so good ones to other clubs in the last window.

I'd play Bent and Campbell upfront from the off. Maybe tell Campbell to hold a little deeper unless he wants to break. Ooer. This business of them being too similar to pair is not only daft, but a luxury we can't afford to indulge right now.

This is football, not budgie breeding. just tell'em to go out there and  flamin' well score.

Spurs to go in at half time 0-1 down and win 1-2 is as good as 30/1 with Boylesports. Jamie O'Hara to score at anytime doesn't look too bleak at 5/1 with the same firm.

What do I want? A bit of daring do. This isn't a rehearsal. So lots of forward thinking and forward balls. On the ground. You know, like that smashing lot, what were they called? How they used to play. The Lilywhites.

Push and run. Not nudge a little bit, say excuse me a few times then go home again.

He has to play Campbell and Bent from the start. Otherwise it'll be defend for 90 mins. Coming away with a loss or a nail biting scrape through to the next stage. We need confidence so no more sideway passing and playing it back, attack is the only way forward. If we dont come away with a victory tomorrow night, then there's no hope come Sunday. Come on you Spurs!!!

"He said: "When people talk about Juande Ramos's signings, I think in the case of Spurs it's a wrong conception.

"I think it's the clubs's signings. There are four or five people giving opinions on signings and he is one of them.

"He can suggest things, and if you look at Spurs you could say they need a centre-back, an experienced striker and a defensive midfielder. I'm pretty sure Juande Ramos realised that as well and maybe even asked for it.

"But the club decided through a very good pre-season where Roma was destroyed, they beat Celtic and Borussia Dortmund that it was not needed and in fact Bent was a good enough striker. Why get another one?

"Well the thing is if you have Bent and Pavlyuchenko they are very similar and it would have been better to maybe sell Bent and get a different kind of striker or maybe get a different kind of striker to Pavlyuchenko.

"The singings have not just been Juande Ramos, the mistakes are not only Juande Ramos' and that's something that the club accepts and realises."

Some interesting insight if this is the actual rationale behind the lack of activity.

Or is this just a cover for the teams failed attempts to buy?

What we really need tomorrow is a start like Sevilla performed against us at the lane where they were 2 up in about 20 minutes.
If we could do that it could be game over.

One broadsheet journo (can't remember which) claimed recently that Wendy had asked for a center-back and a holding midfielder during the summer, obviously to no avail.

Your hypocrisy is again noted. Your lot are about to be the first London club to be charged for racist and offensive chanting (lynching, Aids... lovely people). At the slightest inference of racism connected with John Terry and Chelsea fans, you make the most salacious comments. When it's Spurs, though, you operate a Chinese PR policy - it never happened. How funny if that disgusting chant makes Sol's free transfer actually ends costing Spurs money.

this is about Sol, its about Wisla Krakow. But for the Record, that particular Sol chant is one i heard a good 3 years ago or maybe more. Why now are people starting to probe it? Hampshire Police will be loving the publicity, and now every hand-wringing, PC swine will crawl out of the woodwork and say how disgusting some Spurs fans are. Like they've never said anything offensive ever. blatant kicking a team while its down. Does Sol Campbell want to persue this? i very much doubt it. its been 7 years and he's always risen above it. Nothing will come of this. The chant isn't even racist. Homophobic maybe, but not racist.

Now, tomorrows Mid-Afternoon Yidfest (can i still say Yid, Sol Brother?) 2-0 to us, Fraizer and Bent in the 2nd half

COYS!!!

Well I'm pretty impressed so far with Corluka at CB.

But of course we could use a class DM and a LW too.

Competely agree. Corluka is coming along nicely and is begining to show signs of rio ferdinandness on the ball; not sure how often we've played him at center-back though. I'd certainly like to see him there to forge a partnership with Woody when Hutton's back in his rightfull place.

DM and LW of quality; if only.

...

In the back: Corluka is cup tied. Hutton is injured. Dawson and Zokora are pants. King is crippled. Gilberto is a non entity. BAE is not much better.

Hopefuly King will be able to play tomorrow along with gunter, Woody and Bale.

I have a feeling BAE and Dawson will be chosen though and I'll be biting my nails and covering my eyes hoping Gomes and Woody save the day.

Dear Brucey,

I should perhaps have made myself more clear; I know Corluka is cup-tied for tonight, I was talking generally. I too have no faith in King's knees or the ability of Dawson, BAE, Zokora or Gilberto. I'm still not entirely convinced by Bale's defensive prowess but he'll do for now alongside Woody, Corluka and Hutton for my regular back four.

As for tonight, if we've a midfielder in defence, all bets are off.

BC...surely King has to be healthy for this game. He hasn't played in a week. I think Bale will be fine for tomorrow too.

Considering he's only played in 2 games all month, both cup games, it appears they are saving King exclusively for cup games.

Doesn't explain why Gunter didn't get a game against Portsmouth with Corluka at CB, though.

Does Gunter have some injury? It's ridiculous that he hasn't gotten more of a run. He's looked solid both away at Chelsea and against Krakow. I just can't wrap my head around him on the bench when Dawson and BAE put in cringe worthy performances every time they set on the pitch.

Would like to see Gunter/Woody/King/Bale in the back as well.

Will likely see Zokora/Woody/King/Bale.

Will gouge my eyes out - Zokora/Woody/Dawson/(BAE or Gilberto).

I agree El, keep Zok, Ohara, Thud, Jenas out of defence.

I was just wighing options on for the defence v. Wisla, not questioning anyones knowledge of Corluka's eligability for European football.

I dont think King should be playing at all at the moment.
He is a class footballer, for sure, but its common knowledge that he cannot manage 1 game a week, let alone 2.
I would rather see Ramos play the same 4 for every game, get a bit of consistancy, hopefully build up some understanding between them.
Give Ledley time to recover (fully? prob not) or keep him under wraps, maybe use him when one of the other 2 CB's are out.

I'd rather go with King at even 50%, than Dawson at 100%, because that is really what you would be deciding between tomorrow.

I'd like consistency as well, but with the injuries and cup ties its pretty impossible.

To be honest, how bad is King injuries? Its like playing in a pub team, to see if our best centre half knee's will hold out and to see if has got over his hang over from the night before.

Surely we must be saying long live the King and find a new one in January, but then again i would rather half him playing even only half fit instead of Dodgy side step him Dawson.

I think Sol's a w*nker.

However, maybe it's because I have better things to do once I've handed over my dough to Levy & Co, but I'm not singing songs that would be barely out of place next to the lit torches of a lynch mob.

I'm not particularly PC about the gig, just not into being branded this or that over lyric interpretation from a kangeroo court.

If there was a simple chant of 'w*anker' repeated I might give that a go if the mood took me.

What would be far more enterprising is if we could come up with some good, catchy and preferably funny numbers for our own lads.

Trouble is old mate, I think Cup Speacialist or not, Wendy knows that the smelly stuff is all about him and if we get ousted by this lot the press will want his knackers for earings.

I agree the league is far more important. Would all the new sides we play next year be impressed that we were the 'so &so cup' holders?

And the telly companies certainly wouldn't when handing out their cheques.

I don't get how the team who needs more games to gel as a unit would gain anything from losing out on the ability to play more games in cups?

Or do you feel that we are more likely to gel on the training grounds than by playing more games?

By the way what exactly would a reserve side with as many first teamers sitting for Spurs look like?

Agreed Double vision, I smell a blue banker me self. And lets face it ...Chelski...home of the headhunters...chelsea smile...and lets not forget the anti-semetic chanting of their own fans toward Avram grant.....

Hypocrisy (or the state of being a hypocrite) is the act of preaching a certain belief, religion or way of life, but not, in fact, holding these same virtues oneself. For example, an adult telling children not to smoke cigarettes, even though the adult smokes. Hypocrisy is frequently invoked as an accusation in many contexts.

well i fr one hope we play a weak reserve side tomorrow and save as many first teamers for our 6 pointer at the weekend.

We have entered the cup with half a squad, may as well knock it on the head. an unwelcome distraction

Shouldn't we at least get into group play before going that route?

Besides we had a rough draw getting Liverpool in the Carling.

why?

concentrate on getting out of the botttom 3 then go for cups.

UEFA and Carling Cups are an unwelcome distraction. we are playign strionger teams in cups we cannot hope to prgress in than concentrating on league survival.

I don't get how the team who needs more games to gel as a unit would gain anything from losing out on the ability to play more games in cups?

Or do you feel that we are more likely to gel on the training grounds than by playing more games?

By the way what exactly would a...

we loe king for the league after every cup game he starts.

we lost bale because of a pointless cup game

woody needs a break

league safety first.and yes i would prefer we wrked the first team on the training ground than the further confidence knock of getting beat in poland going into the hul game

Surely we must be saying long live the King and find a new one in January, but then again i would...

Instead of coming up with negative (albeit humourous) songs about our own players why not actually try and give the lads some confidence by singing some decent, well-thought through songs.

(To the tune of 'Rio' by Duran Duran)

His name is Gio and he plays down at the Lane/
He came to Spurs when he moved away from sunny Spain/
Now he's a star in the famous white and blue/
"Ole, Ole" Gio "Ole" the Tottenham boys love you!

Harry, I've even got a sly reference to your site in there. If this song isn't being sung on Sunday against Hull, I give up! COYFS and COYSF (Come on you Spurs Fans)

HOW many times can we say the same thing.....

the team is crap at the moment because there is no team.

how can anyone expect players that have only known each other about a month to gel instantly!

i love spurs, and am as disapointed as the next spurs fan at the recent form, but lets stop and think for a second.

we have a great manager. we have a potentially very good squad, that needs to be trimmed and a few new players brought in, for it to be a great squad. We have a great deputy in the form of Poyet, great fans and a great stadium......

what we dont have is PATIENCE, and that is the only thing that will see us through all of this.

oh yes, and Comolli and Levy need to go. NOW!

Levy because he is alwas trying to make a buck, and football is not just about that, its also about PASSION, which he has shown time and time again he simply does nto have.

Commoli needs to go, because the longer hs stays, the more we are being led to believe that the blame for our recent transfer shambles and lack of signings in poitions we really needed cover for, was the fault of Ramos, and Poyet as well as the Board, which I simply do not believe.

Someone has to carry the can, for the bounce we need to restore our confidence to happen. As otherwise, there will always be a stale smell in the air. The smell of sometihng not being right.

With regards to players to keep and get rid of, and relegate to squad players, this might sound harsh but in my opinion tough times call for tough measures

FIRST 11 - GK-gomes, RB-hutton, LB-bale, CB-woodgate, CB-corluka, RW-bentley, DM-hudd (for now), AM-modric, LW-dos santos, S-campbell, S-pavluychenko or bent (either but they cant play together)

RELEGATE TO SQUAD - jenas (too weak), zokora (would be more suited to sprinting as can run very fast, but just not with a ball) ekotto (too lightweight), dawson(just not good enough), lennon(could have been great, but cant cross, and people aew wise to his runs now)

I know Ramos does not want to play the 4-4-2 system, but until he gets the players HE WANTS, this is the safest option as using matches for training players in the new shape is killing us, our morale, and our chances of doing anything this year, which leads us back to where it all began..preseason.

Had all of our signings been concluded in preseason, ramos would have had time to get his team to bond, become friends, become a team, and learn how each other play. instead he is being forced to gel the team on the pitch, which is the only place he can see who can play where, and who can play with each other in a realistic setting. FOR THIS THE BLAME CAN ONLY LIE WITH COMOLLI AND LEVY.

Give our club its soul back! flair, passion, and good football are all I want. And with the deadwood out, I guarantee we will get it!

Comolli its time to say bye-bye. Levy it's time to stop blaming players heads for being turned, and blame yourself for not seing theser things coiming, or being wise enough to play the game.

Ramos and Poyet, good luck....your gonna need it.

Thanks mate.

As an aside, isn't Modric left footed? If he's too small for a central role, why not try playing him wide? His delivery is probably better than Lennon's, and he's probably got better sense than Bentley who should be on the right anyway.

He has to play Campbell and Bent from the start. Otherwise it'll be defend for 90 mins. Coming away with a loss or a nail biting scrape through to the next stage. We need confidence so no more sideway passing and playing it back, attack is the only way forward. If we dont come away with a victory...

I think it's unlikely Ramos will want to play 442, even though I'd probably prefer it. There was a comment above from someone hoping that we weren't going to get to see midfielders playing in defence - once again this is more than likely what's going to happen. I'm not normally one to normally second guess the manager but I reckon Zokora ends up right back, with my expectation of Ramos' starting line up being
GK Ramos
DR Zokora, DC King, DC Woody, DL Bale (if fit, BAE if not)
DM Thudd DM Jenas AM Modric (2 holding with Modric advanced if fit) MR/ML Lennon/ Bentley one of these two will again play out of position, probs Lennon on the left.
ST Bent

If playing 451 I'd rather see Gunter RB, he's been solid enough in my opinion and deserves some continued outings and starts where possible. Zokora would then move in to the sole DM role, he has undoubted ability to cover ground and spot danger (it's just what he does when he gets it that's the problem!). 2 centre mid's then Gene arse and Modric in deco esque type of role with Lennon RW and GDS LW with Bent up top. This should provide the packed midfield when not in possesion, but attacking players with pace and skill when breaking and in possession.

That's my tuppence worth anyway, not saying that it actually counts for anything

I think that given plight of the club results wise, we should be playing our best available eleven each game. If we are drawn to play the blind school in timbucktoo we should put out our best team. If we play Hull or Newcastle or ManU, we should put out our best team.

We do not have the luxury of "resting" players, "saving" players for "more important games" or pacing ourselves over a busy fixture list. We need to win the next game and when we've done that we then need to win the one after that.

At the risk of repeating myself, we do not put out our best eleven because Ramos does not know who our best eleven are.

I'm not blaming him entirely for that......... he's still evaluating these guys who have been at the club what, 4 weeks? I'd guess some of them are only just getting used to the climate, their team-mates (they probably know 'most' of their names now). This is the problem with wholesale change and why clubs like Sunderland and Pompey turn us over using our own EPL blooded players (or at least former players).

However there are some things we should know already, one being our best defensive option based upon the Chelski game. We know we are weak in protecting the defence (even Alan Hansen has figured that one out). We know they are going to try to hit us for the 1 goal deficit, so we are going to have to attack on the break.

We should address these things first with the best personnel available. Win first then worry about the cost in player fatigue, etc second.

As for Judas, I have little sympathy for him. However the homophobia is only implied and there is no racism, but calling him a c*** is surely sexist.

So Sol Campbell was subjected to relentless abuse this week during Portsmouth's 2-0 home victory over Tottenham. Please hang on while I reach for my kleenex, I may have empathy with his predicament...but sympathy is is short supply here.

Rascist? Homophobic? Abusive? Filthy!....it has been called many things (and published elsewhere) but it is none of them, it runs way deeper than that. This is primal stuff. Let me explain.

Sol Campbell joined Spurs as a prospect, they brought him on until he made the first team...changed him from a striker to a defender and helped him develop into one of the finest defenders in the world. Played for England. He was adored by the fans, He was Spurs through and through...professed his love for the club, promised he would never let his contract wind down and would never join A5ena1. He betrayed them just like a cheating spouse. The cruelest blow for the fans was his moving to the arch enemy..HE COULD HAVE GONE ANYWHERE! What kind of way is that to treat the ones you say you love?...I have always harboured a suspicion that "Man in a Raincoat" had something to do with it.

Now 8 years later in the twighlight of his career, he has expressed his shock at the depth of the enmity from Spurs fans. He does really seem have the air of someone who is deeply hurt by the hatred he feels from those who used to adore him. I believe this is the crux of the matter. He would like to have good memories of his 12 years at Spurs, almost half of his career. He would like to greet the fans he professed to love and be applauded the way old favourites always are (Teemu anyone?).

This appears to be the point, he just doesn't get how deeply he hurt his lover, he wants to be able to chit chat and have fun like old friends and it just can't be that way. His denial is what fuels this fire.

The best thing for Sol Campbell in my opinion would be for him to make a very public apology to the Spurs fans for the way he hurt them and aknowledge that what he did was..for the fans, unforgiveable. Then, possibly a pilgrimage to Bill Nicholsons Grave to re-affirm his "love for the club" and maybe the fans will lay off him and he will start to earn back some of the respect he lost when he set of in pursuit of easy gains and quick success.

He never did get that Champions League medal did he?

Meh,I could learn lots. This is very true. To add to what I know already.

Like you and Charlie are using the same computer.

Good luck.

Can we track this fool and let the authorities know? Surely split personality disorder, a la Jekyll & Hyde is dangerous and treatments should be given to Charlie-Paul!

I think that given plight of the club results wise, we should be playing our best available eleven each game. If we are drawn to play the blind school in timbucktoo we should put out our best team. If we play Hull or Newcastle or ManU, we should put out our best team.

We do not have...

Hitting them on the break means playing players with pace. as such Lennon has to play.
I think we'll scrape through with a 1-1 or possibly a win by the odd goal.

Morning all, and Ginge,

Well i really don't know what to make of this one. All i know is that a loss here would be a disaster of epic proportions, a good win could push us on to better things.

As HH said, a bit of 'TO DARE IS TO DO' is required tonight. A bit of adventure and we must force the issue and attack. Krakow reckon we are low on confidence so I think the best thing we could do is to hit them hard early on, really go at them and put them on the back foot, if we can get an early away goal it will settle the nerves and we can build on it and hopefully maybe grab a much needed morale boosting performance.

Lets hope Ramos gets the team selection right this afternoon (I'm still shocked that UEFA can allow a tie to take place at 3.40 polish time / 2.40 GMT)

We do not have...

"However there are some things we should know already, one being our best defensive option based upon the Chelski game. We know we are weak in protecting the defence (even Alan Hansen has figured that one out). We know they are going to try to hit us for the 1 goal deficit, so we are going to have to attack on the break."

Spot on as ever. I wish we could go out (as was suggested yesterday on here) and rattle two in and knock the wind out of them.

Oh well.... :?

Anyone who prattles on about Lennon being sub standard has not seen him this season. I've seen most of the matches he's played and he must be our most consistent midfielder.

The match is very winnable today

and that's what I expect

with Modric dominating.

Have to agree with you on the Lennon factor. Before the start of the season I would have wuite happily seen him sold. However, this season as you rightly point out he has been one of our standout performers.

I just wish he had more of an end product. That IMO is the one thing that is holding him back.

Actually, his final ball is what's improved the most, that curling shot against Pompey was none too shabby.
