City Slickers - Player Ratings & The Goals

Sunday, 09 November 08, 09:55 PM · Comments (202)

A new dawn, another win. I could get used to this.

The difference is undoubtedly Redschnapps and the difference is these boys really believe they can turn things around. We're not quite out of the woods yet, but we're off bottom and able to start looking folk square in the eye again.

You see clubs come off the rails hit the relegation zone and and you watch them fight. You can see the fight has gone out of them. Drowning - not waving. Tottenham's performances since 'Arry came in have not been like that. More like masterclasses in common sense and a thing called ...will.

Gomes 7 I predict a time when his critics will groan when he comes for a cross and he only catches it.

Woodgate 7 Kept them at bay using only a large broom and dustbin lid.

Ekotto 2.5 Hopefully we can appeal the card and get the ban extended so he can have a long think about what it is he wants out of life.

Corluka 7 Every game I see marginal improvement. Note to PSB: That is how you leave a club.

King 6.4 Uncomfortable viewing. The battery is going and it fell over at a crucial moment.

Zokora 6.5 One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest time. Is he a patient or a doctor?

Jenas 6.5 I'm beginning to think he might be agoraphobic.

Lennon 6 Came on and didn't change the game.

Huddlestone 6.6 Class in a glass. Unfortunately it was a flute and we need him by the pint.

Bentley 6.5 A day where he had to battle to do anything. I'd say the lid on his hair wax wouldn't undo the first time and his earphones on his iPod were all tangled up like you would not believe.

Modric 8.1 Man Of The Match. He's a terrier. Twice as good as any City player. Inspirational.

Bent 8 Super Darren Bent. Would you Adam and Eve it? Me neither.

Modric was superb, but I hope we get Arshavin too, with Modric playing as a support striker off-left, Arshavin playing as a support striker off-right, and Bent or Pavlyuchenko playing deeper up front.

I think you are not being fair to Ekotto. He struggled like hell before city were reduced to 10 men, but he gave some decent crosses. Since we did not play with a wide left winger(zokora? jenas?) Ekotto was forced to run forward all the time, leaving much space behind him. If Zokora had done his job probably this would not have happened. When Ekotto went forward Zokora should have dropped to cover the space.

All in all a good game we dominated, but I didn't understand why Modric was subed. He was probably the only one(except Hudd) who could distribute the ball to Lennon. We dropped a class immidiately when Modric was off. If he get's injured I think we might be in trouble.

I've been doubting 'Arry since he's arrived, mainly due to the fact that despite the good results these haven't matched the performances. I thought the honeymoon was due to end this weekend but didn't as we lucked out another win. As long as this run continues and the performances keep improving I'm happy for my healthy cynicism to be proved wrong...I'm glad Modric is starting to show us what he's made of, Berbatov's genius may not be as missed after all (though what a pairing those woud have made...)

Lucked out? Blimey my lillywhite tinted glasses need a bit of a clean up!
I thought we totally dominated the match, up till Modric's departure. Their opener came as a bit of a shock to me, we looked solid up till that moment.
Yeah, we made hard work of it towards the end, but that does not mean we would not of won if it had been 11 v 11, it aint that easy.

For what its worth here are my ratings, watched the whole match, great performance from the team..

Gomes 7 - looked safe as houses - why is press still pciking on him???

Woodgate 7 - solid

Ekotto 5 - not as bad as ppl are making out - not a bad left foot - deservedly sent off.

Corluka 7.5 - this guy is good.

King 7 - might not have had a great game - but the confidence he instills in the back 4 is priceless

Zokora 6.5 - again dont like this player, was ok.

Jenas 6.5 - i like jj, he wasnt fully fit, still carrying injury, did ok

Lennon 6 - never got going

Huddlestone 7.5 - he has made a big difference, breaking up play, his range of passing.

Bentley 7 - best yet to come

Modric 8.5 - outsdtanding, getting stronger and looks very dangerous everytime he gets ball.

Bent 8 - 2 goals, what more can i say.

I think was a great display, not many teams will go there and win, ppl will say sending off changed game, which is true, however we were the better side (even tho went 1 down), up to the sending off. but the way we passed the ball around and made are man advantage count was extremly pleasing.

on another note, i see comolli has got another job, DoF at St Etienne,

i dont like to say i told you so just yet as its early days......but i did say the players we had are good and the players that comolli has brought in are good players modric, corluka etc. but ppl still blamed him, rather than blame Ramos, i think time will prove it was more Ramos fault for the mess we were in.

Thank you Harry for saving us!

Ekotto 's matches tend to follow one of two patterns. In the first he plays really well and makes at least a couple of bad mistakes which tend to cost us. In the second he doesn't play very well.

What game were you watching?

we were playing away from home, against a team many ppl believe to be a top 6 side. we controlled the game from start to finish, yes the sending off did change the game, but against ten men we totally outplayed them, keeping possesion and not giving it away, again many other teams would have struggled. lets not forget we were 1 0 down, it showed great spirit and fight to get the win, i wouldnt call the perofrmance LUCKY, it was DESERVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get the impression meesterlee is a bit of a "glass half empty" kind of fan. A bit like my old man .............. not happy unless he's complaining about something. Spurs could beat Chelsea 6 - 1 and my old man would sit there moaning about conceeding the one for hours on end rather than basking in the glory of the result!!! Miserable old git but he assures me that he wasn't like that before he met my mum! Having said that i've known her for 36 years now and i'm not like that!!

Anyhoo ..... Regulars will know that I have been banging on about how good Bent will be for us since he joined and I feel the same way about Gomes. Just like the Bent situation where people were getting on his case for not scoring enough despite no service a similar situation applies to Gomes and I said this about Robbo last season too. The more shots a goalie has to face in a game the more likely he is to drop a clanger. Add to that the inconsitencies in our defence and you have a recipe for a confidence crash! Everyone bangs on about how good Van der sar and Czech are but they have a fraction of the ammount of shots to deal with that Gomes does so we have to address the problem of giving chances away before we start to cry for a new keeper. The more settled and solid the defence and midfield the more the keepers confidence will rise. He will come good!

Absolutely delighted with the recent run and long may it continue.

Oh and THUDD looks the nuts in the middle of the park. Pure class!

Has everyone forgotten - it was an AWAY win!

Even in our "top 5" years we struggled with away wins, and to go to Man City and get a result is fantastic. Plenty of teams ride their "luck", the "Big 4" included.

Surely luck has as much a part to play in any game as talent and determination.

They didn't play brilliantly, but City have some match winning players that we kept at bay

Morning Spurs.
10 points in 4 league games is beyond anyone's imagination when Harry took over, particularly when you look at who we played. We've majorly ridden our luck, but confidence brings and breeds luck. There's new manager bumps then there's Arry's massive moobs! That doesn't work but you know what I meant! Sounds like a fanzine "Arry's massive moobs, Modric interview!". I actually expected a reality check against MC, but fair play to our battling and occasional classy play. Modric grows every game and you can now see him controlling everything we do. Thud is now punching three quarters of his weight and Corluka is a defensive Berba in demeanor. Like an old Rolls Royce, shite cornering but purrs over the ground with assurance.(Ignore that, that didn't work either!) Full leather , all the toys???! I'm tired.
AJ will score against us but we'll go on and beat Fulham. No sendings off this time. Snoop Dog banned, thank the Lord.
Also a Fulham own goal though...3-1 to us.
Mad league, could go bottom or top seven with a couple of losses/wins!

Ekotto is a huge liability....anyone saw him on hte tely how he was taking over the phone with a big smile on his face without caring what goes on in the game and that just minutes after he was substituted in udenese game...talking about love and passion for the team..I would say ship him quick out of London before he causes further damage.

I think I read an interview with Ekotto when he first signed where he said something like he didnt really like football, doesnt really support anyone just happened to be quite good and luckily became a profesional. Think what anyone of us would do to be a footballer and yet wankers like him are and don't even appreciate it, doesnt even appreciate he plays for a club like spurs!

Just a word of sympathy for Sparky. Many wanted his no nonsense approach to instill some discipline when we were on the brink of a managerial change. It seems however that player discontent (Robinho etc not agreeing with his strict approach) is straining his authority over the squad and coupled with his poor run of results and lower expectations than the new owners, is going to see him out of a job less than a year after joining.

This comment isn't to highlight the plight of one of our competitors for a European spot, nor to sh*t all over the next Chelscum, but more to highlight the issues facing a modern EPL manager.

BMJ suffered from all of the above symptoms prior to his constructive dismissal, and Juande the same. Somehow though I can imagine that Arry's mix of arm round the shoulder and straightforwardness would be able to manage the primadonnas gracing the modern game of football. Cheeky bid for Robinho in January? ;)

Modric worked his arse off and controlled the game. Lennon had been warming up before the second the goal. I think the idea was to bring him on to bring some spark, but after the second goal I think they worngly decided to put him on anyway. That last 20 minutes without Modric were very nervy.

I hope HJR has not brought too many cooks in to the kitchen on the sidelines. I am sure Bond and Jordan work with HJR well, but it was clear that they have to learn more about who can do what on the Spurs bench.

Completely agree with Bruce C(alright my luv! Can't beleive these cards!)
We've had the joy of a CC win so let's focus on getting up the league and give youth/ others a chance.
We don't need to pick up injuries/cards etc in games that really aren't the priority.
It'll give the squad more time to train with new coaches etc.
CC win or better league finish? I'd take league this term.
Besides we're going to win the UEFA.
Glory glory.

From 4 games we achieved 10 points.

If, from the previous 12 games, we had accrued points at the same rate, we would now have 30 points.

We would also be top of the league.

I know hindsight is a beautiful thing. And percentages and statistics are seductive.

But it makes you wonder. Spurs. 30 points. Top of the league.

We don't need to pick up injuries/cards etc in games that really aren't the priority.
It'll give the...

id take a better league position too...

but it's a game of football.. 90 mins.. let's go and win..

I hope we play as many of the young guns as possible against liverpool and save our strength for the premier league. Give Bostock and Campbell a run and try Taarbt, Ghaly and/or KPB in the middle. That way if we lose it will not upset the confidence of the first XI.

fuck that..."if we lose"

let's go and beat them.. i don't care who plays..

fuck yeah!
dont stop the momentum we have at the moment.
Losing is a habit I hope we have got out of, one defeat and Harry's invincability will disappear, lets make it later rather than sooner

We always go to win and I'm not saying we can't win with second string...ok I am, but as you know a loss in the league and we're back in the shite. I think we shouldn't risk players for the cup with least value for us, until we're comfortably mid table. I actually do think we've got a genuine UEFA shout, despite some bloody good sides still being in. The combative games don't or didn't suit our set of players as much as the space and flow of european games.
Harry'll win the FA cup, that's a given. A Shay?

'After enduring his first failure in a distinguished career as a result of the mistakes of others, Gustavo Poyet is ready to go it alone.' So says the partial writer.

Gus openly blames Levy for Spurs' horrendous start, on account of the protracted Berbatov transfer. True, it dismayed everyone here, but our form after the Carling Cup Final was poor, despite Ramos having both Berbatov and Keane still at his disposal.

Gus also reveals that he considered taking the Newcastle job, but was put off by the fan’s hostility to the Board and Dennis Wise, and also his relationship to Wise. It’s easy to imagine the rumour of his potential departure bubbling away at the training-ground and destabilising the squad. It’s also easy to imagine it destabilising Ramos. Confidence is a fragile ecology. A rise in temperature here, a fall there, and an entire eco-system can be threatened.

‘Poyet disagreed with Ramos on many issues, particularly his decision to play Ledley King in the Uefa Cup rather than the Premier League. “In terms of coaching it was a little more enjoyable with Dennis,” Poyet said. “It was a great job at Tottenham, but I wasn’t as involved as I wanted to be.’ So was Gus really just an interpreter and responsible for keeping the balls pumped up with air?

‘“It’s very frustrating, but I look at it the other way as well. In the Carling Cup final, when Juande took [Pascal] Chimbonda off and left [Steed] Malbranque on as a left back I was thinking ‘what’s he doing?’ but we won.’ Yes, but what if we hadn’t won? And is it really acceptable that Ramos and Poyet didn’t confer about such a tactical decision? Or that Ramos didn’t feel he had to explain or elucidate to Poyet? Or that Poyet didn’t feel he could enquire?

We are out of the bottom three and we have to keep winning in the league. Wearing out or risking injury to the first XI would be a big mistake. Don't take my word for it. Take Posh's. ;)

Giovani dos Santos will undergo an examination of his right ankle under anaesthesia on Tuesday to determine the severity of his high ankle sprain.

The Mexico international was seen by a specialist on Monday morning, who confirmed the diagnosis of the injury suffered in training last week.

Manager Harry Redknapp said: "Gio will go for an exploratory examination tomorrow but hopefully the outcome will be positive so he can return sooner rather than later.

"We all wish Gio well and a speedy recovery because I have not had the opportunity to work with him yet but everybody tells me he is a real talent and his record suggests that is the case."

I hope he's back soon too. It would be great to see Gio, Modric and Bentley playing behind Bent or Pav and I'm sure Harry will get the best out of him when he returns.

Brucie, I'm with you on the importance of keeping first team members fit for Prem. games. It's gonna be a dogfight for the remainder of the season, with any team from 4th down as potential relegation fodder. The Carling,FA and UEFA cups are mere trifles when compared to league safety. Let's see what talent we have on the fringes.

I thought dos Santos would set the Premier League alight this season. Such a pity it hasn't worked out the way we all hoped - and now this setback. But he's young, and time is on his side.

I hope he stays around. Maybe it's the media hype he arrived with, but he's one of those players who gets fans out of their seat in anticipation of something extraordinary, whenever he gets the ball.

I didn't think that Levy's decision to switch regimes needed any more validating, but reading this report does exactly that.

To say you blame Levy, but not Ramos, and then go on to explain that you could not explain Ramos' decisions on the pitch is a odd thing indeed. Ramos not communicating with the one guy brought in purely for that reason. Who'd a thunk it?

Levy may, or may not, have got it right with the Berbatov sale, but he's come up trumps in the end. Of that I have no doubt.

I think you are not being fair to Ekotto. He struggled like hell before city were reduced to 10 men, but he gave some decent crosses. Since we did not play with a wide left winger(zokora? jenas?) Ekotto was forced to run forward all the time, leaving much space behind him. If Zokora had done his job...

Short of Modric having taken a knock we know nowt about, I'd say 'Arry felt that the slightly more defensive minded and physically more imposing JJ needed to stay on.

I've always thought that offence was the best form of defence; 'Arry appears to disagree.

We gave away the midfield for the last 20 minutes but managed to hold on. Maybe Reddies trusts our defence more than I do. 8O

We gave...

It seemed that HJR decided to keep JJ on because of his crucial role in the 2nd goal.
He then opted to switch Modric for lennon, perhaps thinking lennon might bring some more pace to create more chances and kill the game off. That substituion at the time has worked before, but it didn't work yesterday. I don't think anyone is really to blame.

Gus openly blames Levy for Spurs' horrendous start, on account of the protracted Berbatov transfer. True, it dismayed ...

Surely, what Arry's done with the same players we started the season with, blows gus's reasoning out of the water?

The only major change to the line up Arry's made is Thud playing DM and playing it very well. I think with him there, able to distribute very well, JJ with his energy and the few goals he always chips in with and Modric as the chief creator we have a well balanced midfield. Bent's starting to score, Pav to come in, Charlie slotting in well in the back four, we don't appear to have the same gaping holes in the squad we appeared to have. If we've only got say c£10m to spend in Jan who should we go after? I think a decent LB to provide another option there as Bale is struggling this year and the other two jokers we've got in that position are gash! I still think AA and Diarra would give us a lot more depth but I think LB is our biggest problem at the mo (especially due to Bale's curse!)

I presume because he wanted to keep four at the back (the defenisve replacements, especially on the left are p*ss poor). Also I think he likes bringing Lennon on to run at a tired defence. In hindsight Bentley to come off may have been a better bet than Modders!

If you are both right on the defending the lead front that is a worrying sign. Firstly, because the best way to defend a lead is to increase it and secondly because we were playing Manchester City with 10 men NOT Man U.

Good question Brucie.

I keep reading that Corluka's favourite position is DM, so why not try him there ? We have four international right backs, OK one of them is Staltieri, but the other two are pretty good.

I can understand why Arry sees Arsehol as a safer defender than Baler but that is only true if you disregard the inevitable couple of howlers he conjures up most games.

Maybe, Arry hasn't noticed that yet ?

In regard to the argument as to field a full first team line up against the bindippers in the CC, or experiment with fringe players, my point of view is that any team that has the Redschnapps seal of approval is the right one. However as to the argument that we should be worried about injuries and shouldn't risk players...to that I say "BOOOOO!" 'Audere est Facere, To dare is to do' FFS! By all means give some of the youngsters a run out, but they have to be part of a team that can win, has the desire and will to win, and will fight to make it happen. Since when has it been glorious to field a team that has no chance of winning. What, call them a bunch of kids and hope they'll show up the opposition? Ask Arsehole Wenger - it doesn't work especially when you field a full first team squad anyway.

I thought dos Santos would set the Premier League alight this season. Such a pity it hasn't worked out the way we all hoped - and now this setback. But he's young, and time is on his side.

I hope he stays around. Maybe it's the media hype he arrived with, but he's one of those players...

Arry sounds genuinely sorry that he's not yet had the chance to work with Gio. Does anyone know if there's a performance/appearances based payment clause for his first year like the selling clause? Either way, we are a poorer team without him in it. A point man on fire as Benty currently is would do well with a supporting trio of Gio, Modders and Lennon dovetailing in a total football orgasm. Two solid DM's with pace, a shot and an eye for a pass would complete my midfield.

Get well soon Gio, and the run in will see us shooting for goals we would never have expected just 2 weeks ago. Glory Glory...

Pragmatism "The pursuit of practicality over aesthetic qualities; a concentration on facts rather than emotions or ideals."

If we were working to that ethos, we'd still be where we were under Wendy. Take into consideration all the player interviews since Arry arrived, nearly all point toward the inspiration, motivation and very non-pragmatic elements that he's imbued into their working lives. Under Wendy, the instructions would have been complicated, precise and pragmatic. Under Arry, it appears to be more along the lines of "go have a bit of a run about and score some goals if you can, I believe in you, you're bloody good and better than you think".

Descartes' "Cogito, ergo sum" appears an obvious factual statement to make, however its roots are far more of a leap of faith, crucial is the proof that there is a God.

fatknacker, BC, I understand what you're saying about Custer and glory hunting without appreciation for the actual probabilities achieving success, but do you really have that little faith in our current squad and buying potential in January to think that we have to sacrifice all competitions bar the EPL in order to simply stay up?

Optimistic to a fault perhaps I may be, but I want this year what I want every year - a high enough EPL finish that brings us closer to where we want to be (Champions); As well as some hint of glory (a cup) to pay homage to our illustrious past and paves the way for an even greater future.

That all sounds reasonble. But I think it is important for the whole squad to feel like they matter and that they are part of Harry's positive vision.

I really believe we have some great talent in Taarabt, Ghaly, the fresh Prince, Bostock, Campbell, Ohara, and Dos Santos -- even in Danny Rose and Charlie Daniels. That will of course have to be anchored with experience with Woodgate, Corluka, and a couple of first team players on the pitch.

If you really believe in the power of self belief, then there is no reason why the younger or recently re-squaded players cannot play to win and get a result as well.

Trembly,
I think Harry is the ultimate pragmatist. Play simply and to your strengths. He has said that the Prem. is the priority. Wendy was a UEFA cup first, glory hunter, and reaped the rewards of that policy. Along with you, I'd like us to win everything with style and glory. With the current squad, injury and ineligible players, that's not gonna happen. There's been a great deal of good luck in our recent success, long may it continue, but I don't think we've made the transition into a good side quite that quickly.

Bale-can anyone tell me why, where? And don't give me the 'jinx' thing - if 'Arry can do what he's done with Bent and Modric, then why not Bale. Against Pool he even switched Corluka to left back rather than bring him off the bench ... and the Manure argument doesn't work either - he'd still be worth bringing off the bench in November even if sold in Jan ...

Yiddyness, I never rated Baler much as a defensive left back. Another player that could do with a bit more of an aggressive streak. Unfortunately, the boy currently seems far more interested in sorting his hair out than sorting out the opposition.

Thou shalt not pass! Should be the creed for any defender. Its a real shame though because he does have a sweet left foot and I would even say we haven't seen that since BMJ was here.

I've got to guess that its all just down to fitness and form. In the same way that Hutton is a better right back than Charlie, Baler has more potential than any other left back in our squad -but form/fitness must be an issue otherwise Arry would both rate him and play him.

In other news, Rocha said: "I believe that I have the chance to play in this team and I am not thinking about anything else. There have been rumours about other clubs being interested, but I have spoken with the new coach and we have all got a chance to play."

The only one that I think he might dislodge is Les. I can't actually remember a bad performance from Ricardo that wasn't due to in part to a woeful defence.

Would I play him in the CC against the bindippers? No. If we were playing someone in Division 1 and below, perhaps. So I suppose I hold no expectations to his chances of playing...

Bale's haircut and attitude? Still don't get it - we put f***ing ekottu out there - a guy who's apparently said he wants to leave - and when he played like the two-dimensional waste of space he often is and had to be hauled off. 'Arry still didn't put Bale on. I remember beginning of last season before injury - he was our top scorer - the guy can play with some fire.

Now Ek's got a suspension to serve for his red and we have carling to play too - I'll expect to see Bale somewhere, why not?

My own theory is that he has come out with something Harry didn't like and is having to sit out a punishment. Nothing else makes sense.

I wish we'd got him before the season started. I can't help feeling that, if we got him in January, he'd be like a Ferrari in need of an oil-change and a new set of tyres. But, logically, he'd be knackered in January either way, so may as well get him (if there's mullah and if 'arry wants him).

No doubt Pavlova has spoken to him in glowing terms of the facilities at the club, the PL atmosphere, the quality of the pitches and Westfield, the new shopping-centre in Shepherd's Bush.

I don't really want to know how tough his tackles are ;) Just checked your pic and realised it is a shocker! Still if he's your version of BC's licky underpants then as far as I'm concerned then you're more than welcome to keep it for as long as required.

ASIDE: Have you noticed how much more prevalent the "Gazza grab" has become since Vinny Jones catapaulted this controvertial defensive tactic into play? What's the world coming to??? 8O

Which is of course a sliding tackle, in that you have clearly slid your way past the tackle question. The tackle question being; are you in fact a tackler or a tacklee.

The Carling Cup is becoming the Oneupmanship Cup. Instead of their first teams, clubs now field their reserves, their kids, or just rest key players, effectively giving the opposition a head start.

I propose that Spurs rest all our first team and dispense with the position of goalie altogether. I also propose that we start with only nine players, and withdraw two more in the second half.

Of course, it only works if you win. If you don't you just end up looking stupid.

'Damian Comolli has wasted no time in sacking the manager in his first day as Sporting Director of St Etienne.'

A lesson learned from Levy, perhaps. If DC had an avatar, I think it would be a Thundercat.

So he will be prepared to play our first XI? Hope not.

Tackle or box? Nicholas or Nicola? That is the question.

Sorry DV. Forgot to add Olga (not seen the film but would I give here one if I did or 007?) and now Cassies back, both of which are stiff opposition ;)

Admittedly, Adriana naked (or even without make up) may be similar to many in Barca, but she's a famous Victoria Secrets model and coupled with the Samba beat pulsing through her veins still elevates her to 'phwoar' status in my books.

So...no more entries in bit of fluff day? This is getting like the transfer window deadline!

A bit...'all up in my grill' for my tastes, but as milfs go, there is no one finer.

Except arguably Nigella Lawson.

Or Dawn French.

I regret nothing.

Good stuff:

Following an examination under anaesthesia, it has been determined that Giovani dos Santos' right ankle will not require surgery.

The Mexico international, who sustained the ankle sprain in training last week, will now begin his rehabilitation and is expected to be sidelined for up to four weeks.

To celebrate beating the bindippers including Torres with our 2nd string, I nominate Tits Day to be held on Thursday. No pictures of Damien Comolli or Wendy please.

If only Gio could play tomorrow.... :(

Regarding drugs - I think it is highly unreasonable for the new "rockstars" of the pramiership to comply with the international presidents set by the worlds real athletes.
You know, those that win medals on their own and shit.
Come to my bing, score some shit by all means, but don't expect to get paid in the morning when the referee sends you off for an uncontrollably runny nose.

Anyone got any pain relief for an ankle injury 8O
