Eto'o, Brute?

Wednesday, 11 June 08, 01:45 AM · Comments (66)

In my capacity as Chief Football correspondent and Junior Vice President of Compu-Global-Hyper-Mega-Net I had announced earlier in this selling silly season that Samuel Eto'o had been spotted at The Lane. I am now to conclude that tale for you.

He's laughed us off.

He dropped the bombshell speaking yesterday candidly on Cameroonian telly "Tottenham, and the British club will have to forgive me for saying this, are mid-table and I need more"

I would ordinarily greet such and similar pronouncements with a swift and snarly 'Well sod you too, son!" But this fair enough comment from King Of The Kickaballs.  We as fans are in the same boat. We want more too.

Eto'o went on to say that there had been a lack of running at Barca over the past two seasons, and effectively the showboating over effort had cost them as a result (sound familiar, anyone?). Clearly he means it or WHL would have been an obvious move.

God knows what Ronaldinho will say of City... Or will Taksin's lolly prove more powerful than league placings?

Can't say im too disappointed, id much rather Villa. Equally unlikely, but hey, im a spurs fan. I'll allow myself the luxury of a dream or two.

We're bottom half of the table. Fair comment by the guy. He can do a lot better. After next season though, we will be in a position to offer this kind of player the chalenge they want. Even if we finish 5th or 6th, they will be coming to us knowing that we are very much capable of moving up. Just a case of slowly slowly catchy monkey I'm afraid.

Would've of been a great signing, but never really believed I'd see Eto'o in lilly white. The shit form from most of the team after the Carling Cup didn't help attracting top players either. Until we're an established top 4 outfit, I think we'll struggle to sign the likes of Eto'o and Villa.

Or maybe we didn't want to pay him 120k per week in which case I'd say well done Danny and the Dame.

Several days have gone by and still no sign of 9.37 anon. Harry have you informed the police ? Maybe we could organise a search party ?

Compu-Global-Hyper-Mega?

Sounds very Hitchhikers Guide-esque to me!

It always looked so unlikely for Eto'o to come on over. I'd be quite content with Sergio Garcia (or whatever his name is). A world class striker would be a luxury that we don't really need provided we get a world class midfield sorted out first.

Also...hat-trick Mr Villa and money in the bank!

whiteythompson, If my memory serves me Compu-Global-Hyper-Mega-Net was the name Homer simpson called his internet startup company. I guess this is some sort of metaphor for Harry's rise to Ole Ole. Richt geek bit over.

I reckon Eto'o has a right to his opinion but I reckon he should have kept it to himself. Let's look at it from the other way. What if Spurs were to blab to the media that we thought he was not that good and only made to look good by his teammates in Catalonia? Not sure he would be impressed and liabel talk would no doubt ensue. Perhaps he needs to wind his neck in.

However I still love the goal he scored in the champions league final. Despite all the bottles that got lobbed at me for celebrating it!?

on Eto'o take ,Can't say I'm surprised really. Even if he did look at the two seasons before last what would he see? Two 5th place finishes? No Champions League football, which a player of his profile will always look for. At the minute, we aren't a big enough draw for the very top players in world football. I consider Modric
and Dos Santos as the next step down on the ladder, they have the potential to be world class, but aren't quite there yet. We are
going in the right direction, but we really
need the Champions League to attract the best players, still do not believe we will get
VILLA!!.

What about all this journo BULL SHIT which is doing rounds,.My problem with Chimbo is the times when he decided he couldn't be arsed.
He's like your mate who never runs back when
you play 5-aside. He'll be right on your shoulder when you're attacking demanding the ball before spectacularly fuck it up (your mate's never as good as he thinks he is) and then while you're all killing yourself to get goal side he'll be chucking his arms in the air and pretending he was unlucky or fouled or something before strolling back. Then in the changing room he'll be mouthing off about did you see what he did? Or wasn't that amazing
goal he scored, while everyone else is thinking yeah, whatever... he just like his agent "Japanese BANKER!!!!!

yeah agreed we are a mid table team according to the table, but that doesn't tell the whole story when it comes to transfers. When a player looks at moving he surely must look at the club's potential. To sign for a club purely on what they did last season would be stupid. If that happened no club would ever get any better. In Eto'o's case he is at one of the top clubs and wants to leave. Everything is a step down. If he doesn't want a challenge then fuck off to Qatar or something

Nice new format, Harry. Thanks to those concerned re my absence. One day, like a fool, I went into my back garden and, owing to the fact my grass hasn't received a proper cut for about 18 months, I couldn't find my way out.

Surviving on Premium Mix, I emerged several days later and immediately threw myself into trying to lure Steve McLaren to the vacant Head Coach role at Chel*ea, as I believe that club is deserving of his skills. I have to confess I've so far been unsuccessful but, if we all hold cyber-hands and collectively will it, I'm confident it can come to pass.

I decided sentimentally to retain my moniker, although in written format. 9.37 represents the time of my first ever post on Harry's blog. By a strange coincidence, it also represents the time every day when I empty my bowels, regular as clockwork.

Etowhoo? he's a great player shure, but he wouldnt ply his best football for us, he's temperamental, his peformances depend heavily on his mood, and lets face it, our english weather is no fix for that! Milito or Villa are the only two players that can easily replace our Mr Sulky pantsatov. Or......

Our very own Big Friendly Giant!
Hugglestone for a Centre Forward, he doesnt have to shoot, he can pass the ball to any spot in the net, a huge frame for heading the ball, and a fresh bad attitude and a lethal shot from outside the box.

Giggle as I may, the more I repeat it, the better of an idea it sounds, mind you I have had a couple of shandies at this point

I'll say regarding Eto'o I am not too shocked at this one. In the same sense I would be shocked if we indeed did secure (or have already secured) the services of one David Villa. It would indeed be brilliant (and one for Bimi as I poured scorn on him "plucking Villa's name out of the hat" in a previous discussion. However, his stock will have only risen after his hat trick, and if he hasn't already committed to us under a veil of secrecy, is nailed on to go to one of the Big 4 as they would no doubt pay in the region of 100k a week (or more) to secure his services.

As for the White HART Lane rumours, do we really want to acquire a GK who shipped eight in his last game? I know it's a bit unfair on him to highlight this cos his team weren't exactly helping and he did have a number of decent games prior to this. But I can't help but feel he is not quite the ready made option we need.

Anyway, there's a real feeling of the bar being raised for next season. I imagine Ramos rubbing his hands in anticipation of pitting his wits against Big Phil. It's incredible that the Prem now boasts some of the most luminous and romantic names in football coaching: Sir Alex Ferguson, Rafael Benitez, Ar*ene W*nger, Juande Ramos, Luiz Felipe Scolari, and Gary Megson.

personally i thought it was a big improvement on the Swiss game..

he drifted out of it a small bit once again but when he was on the ball he was outstanding i thought.

and after Germany scored he was Croatia's best player. constantly looking to get on the ball and having the cockiness to hold possession when it woulkd have been much simpler to hoof the ball upfield..

he's arrogant..but the good kind of arrogant..the type of arrogant that says 'i don't care who you are or what your reputation is'.. this is something that some of our current players could do with..

all in all it's clear that with a bit of space he can be deadly..

also he has now outclassed three of the Premier League's (allegedly) best players: Gerrard, Lampard (vs England at Wembley) and Michael Ballack today.. see what i mean about reputations?? they mean nothing..

Puts me in mind of a Harry Hill gig about 300 years ago. Smallish venue when he was still doing a headline set on the QT from Amazon for £250 if it was inside the M25.

Anyway, he's doing the routine and this chap gets up and walks out.

Harry says, once he's out of the room.. to the people with him, "Where's he gone?"

"Toilet" came the reply.

"Right then. Let's all hide."

He then proceeded to farm us all (about 150 people) out of the audience via a door by the stage. We all stood out of sight in (remarkable) silence as a few minutes later, the bloke then returned into the club, saw it was empty and exited thinking he'd gone into the wrong room.

Pity DB didn't give us a return date!

A fond memory nevertheless.

Bim - I thought Modric played well enough, and in my opinion he should not have been whistled for a foul in the second half as his tackle won the ball and put him clear in alone. Surely he would've scored on what would have then been viewed an amazing solo effort. Nevertheless, it matters not now, and he will have further chances to impress us as Croatia's participation in this tournament continues.

As for a new 'keeper. I think Hart would be a welcome back-up, but I feel Spurs need a more experienced pair of hands between the sticks.

What about the Polish 'keeper, Artur Boruc? He was outstanding vs Austria, especially during the opening half hour when the hosts should have bagged at least three goals!

Apparently, Gomes is unhappy at the appointement of Hans Segers (formerly of Spurs) as PSV's new goalkeeping coach. The boy has sense.

It got me thinking: Is there anyone else we can sack or transfer to another club which currently has desirable players on its staff? This could be a workable policy.

First, identify your targets. Second, send your dross to them. Result - targets come running. It's like mediaeval warfare, when dead cattle used to be hurled into besieged castles to spread infection.

On a lighter note, JJ says of last season: "...it was my best here so far, definitely."
