Tottenham Fan 'Thanks Levy' Shocker

In good company - Cooky was a Yid.

The aftermath of this transfer window has seen the baby well and truly thrown out with the bathwater. From season tickets being unrenewed as the last vestages of faith evapourated, to accounts on forums being suspended as tempers frayed and reason turned to unbridled teeth nashing.

Three games in and already two Premiership clubs have imploded. Cave In Keegan has splashed it all over the press he had to go and Curbs has hit the kerb. Geordies are considering an insurrection and threats to boycott the Bolton game have been made.

Manchester City fans were dancing in the streets as their new owners produced Liberia's Deficit from beneath their sheets. They're parking camels where the taxi's used to be, but how long will their interest in City actually last?

East Stand Danny emailed this over last night and it's well worth a read. We need as fans to move on. Me included. All this talk of kidnapping and opportunities lost, bungled or otherwise are all well and good, but we here now, been here before and we are in deep.

WINDOW ON THE WORLD

I like most other Spurs fans, watched with baited breath as the summer transfer window opened - swept in an age of rumours, gossip, enthusiasm, pessimism, optimism, disappointment, and 60,000 online managers – then it closed.  Leaving us Spurs fans well and truly split…. Massively split.  Super split.  Hadjuk split.

Whilst some of us have a huge sense of confidence in the squad that we’ve put together in this time and the way in which our management team have conducted certain business, others (and I believe the archaic old fashioned pessimistic types) seem to view the way in which we’ve conducted our business this summer to be negative, small club minded and ultimately a failure on all levels.

Before I tell you more… before you all say… who’s this nugget? I am dreadfully disappointed with our striking options, especially the message we’ve sent out in taking Campbell on loan without a fee agreed in the event that the talented boy is a success.  I think Pav-lechanmanwinko will be a fab addition to our options, and hope Darren Bent will turn in to the striker with the prowess we all saw in both of his pre-seasons, and more importantly, the finish that bled hope in the result against Chelski.

’m here to defend Levy. (GASP, SHOCK HORROR)

The same people I’ve called archaic are the same people that last year stood in the stands, screaming in disbelief at the treatment of Martin Jol, how on earth could we have done this?  What benefit would it have to our club?  The same people I stood at Wembley with later that year, and chanted Juande’s name… a new belief that the right man for the job was in his seat.  The simple fact is, we are in a ruthless ruthless business, and our chairman has at times needed to be full of that… Ruthlessness.  The time was right, the right man was there… and whilst we all couldn’t see its benefit, he went and did it…. And my oh my oh my, what a great decision it was.

Why’ve I mentioned that? That’s all in the past, and lets judge him on his current performance. I believe its been admirable, ballsy, respectful of our faithful, and honest.  At the same time, he’s stood toe to toe with United, that Scottish lemon… and I believe he’s been the victor.

Ok, lets do that….. so we kicked off the summer with the acquisition of Modric, a player that we would’ve struggled to get near had we waited til after the summer…. Well done Mr Levy, a great signing.

We then got Dos Santos… I almost creamed.  What a talent.  What a prospect. And what a fabulous price.  Well done Mr Levy.

Bentley… oh David Bentley…. I have an affection for this players ability that is deep, and sincere… this boys a player, and we got him at a price that Blackburn must retch at.  We held out, and we got our man.  Not sure about that badge kissing stuff David – we don’t need to know that – just bang a goal or two in, and feed that pavlyunani til he’s filled to the brim.  Well done Mr Levy.

I’ve already spoken about Pavlyugecko.  I’m not gonna say a word – you wait and see.  ‘He’ll be like Rebrov he will’ – oh would you shut up.  He’s nothing like Rebrov… first of all, he doesn’t look like he’s just come off a yellow bus.  He does look a bit like Cameron Diaz though… anyone noticed that?

Then there were the Robbie Keane, and Berbatov situations.  Issues that pulled apart the hearts of all of us.  Lets get this straight, from the off… we were never going to be able to keep either of them.  As our chairman told us, early, respectfully and honestly.. they just didn’t want to be there, their heads were turned, they were out the door, and there was nothing that could be done, apart from broker the best deals for OUR club.  Yes, OUR CLUB.

So, along came Liverpool…. 20m, yes please thank you very much, good night, god bless.  Robbies been great at times for spurs – but 20 million is a lot of money for a player like him.  Robbie Keanes are ten to a dozen… you might not want to hear it, because this is a man who has given us great times, but he’s not worth that.  Him, along with the likes of Robbo were helping our club go stale.  Controlling the dressing, creating unrest…. If Robbie was such an Ambassador, what happened with his strops last year when the manager made decisions? He behaved like Robbo did… Poor me, poor me….

Then theres Berbatov – he was gone last year.. his head away from spurs, thinking about which city centre he’s gonna hang around smoking fags next.  Levy held out, long and hard… did he get bullied? No. He waited, and waited, prepared to let the guy sit in the stands…. Until old Trafford could bare it no longer…. 30.75 thanks.  Take him.  The players were fed up of him, we needed shot of him… simple.

I already mentioned im not happy with the Campbell situation…. But, and it’s a big BUT… wouldn’t it have been silly to do another Rasiak?  So we couldn’t get the right deals on other targets… it happens, even at Chelski over Robinho.  What we have done, is got a decent option in, whilst we go about working on new deals for permanent players.

IN ALL OF THIS – my exemplifying comfort comes from Levy running our club.  We’ve signed big players, we’ve kept up with the Big guns in the market… we’ve hardly spent a penny as we’ve cleaned out our closet of players that just aren’t gonna crack it.  We have a manger that oozes a winning mentality, one that we can trust, one that every player we’ve signed has mentioned. Man City have just become the new Chelsea, and in the way our club is run financially, we have no fear about standing in the same arena… Our club is being run like a business at the right time, and a football club at others.  He’s got the fans in mind.  He is one.

Well done Mr Levy.

You seem to be talking (writing) a lot of sense here Harry, I think Pav and Bent will form a winning partnership and with the wealth of talent we have in midfield, hopefully feeding these strikers appetite for decent balls will be commonplace....time will tell...

Just one more thing, he was also prepared to stand toe to toe with old red nose, prepared to let bebatov rot if thats what his manager wanted. In the end juande didnt want the disruptive influence to linger on so he made the decision and Levy backed him. Levy or Ashley, i know which chairman id rather have!!

Agree with the article wholeheartedly.

On another subject, there is a rumour (obvious bull poo) that Lennon is being linked with the mighty Real Madrid to replace Robinho.

My question is.. Given our squad and with Bentley on the right would we really be bothered if they offered us say £8m for him?

I like the lad and would never push him out but I cant see him getting that many starts this year and the money could be spent elsewhere.

Any thoughts?

I have to say, the article is looking at the wood and not the trees. A lot of sound points have been made and most certaintly, "the lets move on now" point. Lots of things hurt this Summer, I feel terriblt let down by Berbatov & Keane, I am less than optimistic about Bent and who knows how the new Ruski will turn out. But overall, yes, the wood is not in too bad a shape and a string of few wins will get everyone buzzing and confidence up there. So, yeah lets move and get behind them.

As for Levy, the jury is still out imo, time will tell and results will decide, how he has performed.

I agree whole heardedly with the above and what Ramos said; that our squad is much better than when he first joined, we now have options to play one up front with two behind or two up front, and we have three different types of striker. i too congratulate the board on not bowing to the pressure from Manure, and holding out on the price we wanted (although still not happy with how Manure behaved...) time to look forward now and support the players that do want to be at the club who like us will be hoping to propell us to bigger and better things... Time to move on and accept where we are. Theres enough quality behind our 3 strikers for us to change to a system that is able to cope with opposotions attacks and push forward from midfield to score goals across the park.

let go to work

Well said East Stand Danny, if one other signing had gone through at 11.59 on Monday it would have been glory glory. Because it did not, regardless of all the other good signings, suddenly it's doom and despair for too many sheep. Get a fookin grip and give Levy the respect he deserves for running a proper club despite the machinations of two-faced players, dodgy agents, witless FA overseers and cross-eyed fans (thus: LINK)

Ossies dream.

What has Levy done that suggests he should be outed?
Due to Levy we now have the most dynamic midfield i have seen in my lifetime as a Spurs fan.
Levy went against a large portion of Spurs fans and sacked Jol, replacing him with Ramos - wo is a far better manager.
Levy has also managed to sell players for very inflated transfer fees thereby strengthening the club dramatically (Keane £20m/Mido £6m/Berba £30.75)
We are also looking at getting a shiney new stadium to enhance our attractiveness to players and investment alike.
Levy instigated the signing of MANSION as our sponsors, one of the biggest sponsorship deals in european football.
We now have a squad that despite your protestations is much stronger than this time last year. Our defence and midfield are considerably stronger & much more versatile.

All in all Levy has done a good job as chairman of Spurs. The only thing I think he needs to correct is his reliance on Comolli to bring in new players. He has shown time and time again that he finds duds(BAE, Gilberto & Boateng especially). His inability to perform on deadline day has thrown a shadow over the club and I'm sure he is on borrowed time. Levy will more than likely remove him when he returns from his yacht!

Levy out? Your having a laugh. The club has come on a lot in recent years and the fact that we are talking about Champions League qualification rather than relegation is a massive improvement. I remember the times where we were awful under Alan Sugar (though he saved the club) and we have moved on. We have to accept that we are not (currently) a top four side and that we are building for this.

Bad apples such as Berbatov & Keane had to go. I admit it is disapointing to lose such talents but they didn't want to be here. Levy held on and got the most possible for them. Roy Keane had it right when he said he wouldn't try too hard to keep anyone. If they are not going to work hard for the team then let them go. We now have a squad that want to play for Spurs and have something to prove. Lets get behind them and support them to achieve success.

Correct but you have missed a key factor in all of this shenanigans. YOUTH...Ramos is known for bringing on the toddlers and what we have done is bring in Bostock, Mpofu and the other escapes me. Add the average of our squad to Rose, Taarabt, Pechardt and Hutchins that I think will get a run this year. Also our purchases Santos, Modric et al are all under 25. Ramos is clearly here for the long run so expect more youngish buys in Jan, buys that he WANTS and not forced on him. In Ramos I trust.

Gus Must stay - Simple.

He's a real football man, a cracking player in his day and very diplomatic, big ability and big on reputation. He raises the bar of eloquence in football almost single handedly - the nett result is a very, very highly rated coach. After all thats an easy conclusion to draw as what other credentials are really necessary? Good player, good communicator, big rep = job done.

The rumour was that he turned down the Man Utd coaching role, we know for sure that he was lighting quick in playing it all down - in the usual Gus style.

So the question remains - which is the more atttractive proposition? Utd No. 2? or Toon No. 1?

In my opinion its likely that if he could turn down one then there is absolutely no reason that he would take the other.

Here's hoping anyway.

OSSIES DREAM, i believe you are spot on!!!! Levy is an idiot!! Players heads being turned!!! If i recall some seasons ago, Gerard was on the verge of leaving Liverfool....strange he's still there giving his best. How do you keep you're best players from running away??? Pay them properly!!!! Not pittance in comparison to other teams top players. Any smart manager knows that the key to a successfull team is foundation. If the team needed changes, it has to be done in stages & not a wholesale clearance!

I would be most impressed if we finish in the top 4, but it would most likely be a top 10 finish. If we want to be a top 4 contender, then Levy must go along with Comolli. If we need to change our team for success, then i think so does the management.

Fair point Harry, Levy doesnt deserve to get shit thrown at him, Berbs and Robbie both wanted to leave so Levy's hands were tied.
I do think it was a mistake to sell steeeeeeed, he deserved another season at the lane, thought he was great last year.
Lets no kid ourselfs, we cant compete with top 4 financialy, so it will be good going into January to see if we can sign another striker and shift more deadwood like Ghaly and Botang and Roacha, and bring in ONE QUALITY MIDFIELDER TO ADD TO OUR MIDFIELD, AT WORKHORSE,TACKLER, type player, maybe someone older who gel things when needed.
I'd also like to see Gunter used at right back more often and at center half in cup games, (if we get past the cartoon army that is)
Most of all, i'd like to see the coaching staff actualy coach the players we all moan at, get Lennon to cross more, thats if anyone pass's to the boy, get Zakora to position himself a little better, actualy stick an earpeice in his ear and talk him through training sessions, rather than buy buy buy, lets coach coach coach.

Having known from a very early stage that dimi and keane would leave we should have managed to find suitable replacements quicker, 30m but no forward options for the uefa cup is not a good deal as far as I can see, the drive to extract the maximum possible cash value from the berba deal has possibly hurt our season, dragging it on for so long has definately effected the dressing room, Ramos has said as much.

I agree that we have a vastly improved midfield, we will when they get more used to playing with eachother, but we have been used to a bit of flare and guile from our forward players and i think a lot of fans will miss that. Having said that if Pav and Bent can knock in 50+, and they definately have the potential to do so, i'll be happy to shut my mouth.

I guess we'll have to agree to differ on the window. Yes, let's be positive. Yes, we now have a group of extremely talented youngsters. Some problems have been solved. Corluka may be our best signing of the summer as cover for a rickety CB partnership. Pavlyuchenko may turn out to be 80% the player Berbatov was. Yes 2 disruptive players were offloaded for big bucks. But there has been some questionable management, make no mistake about it. By holding out for every last possible penny from United, Levy forced our other negotiations to the last minute, preventing us from concluding deals with which we would otherwise have had much better chances. Personally I don't care if we got another £5-6m for Berbatov; I want to see the right additions made to the squad, and this was ultimately made much less likely by Levy's grievance and sense of injustice. I know Pool & United were out of order, but when DB&RK handed in transfer requests their moves were inevitable and it would have been better to take slightly less money with enough time still to use it before the window closed. Moreover, we still have no midfield general. Zokora simply isn't up to the task (regardless of his best ever game for us against Chelsea) yet we went and re-signed him! And we still don't have an out-and-out left winger; Bale is by far our best LB and needs to start there, and GDS's abilities are wasted on the wing. And we have taken a United striker on loan, without an option to buy...which is rightly the cause of humiliation given our lack of foresight in loaning out Peckhart.

I'm not calling for Levy's head like Ossie's Dream, because Levy is a wily chairman that will keep improving the longer he stays in the business. And I'm not questioning the talent that HAS been added - except that it is wrong to be throwing a lightweight Modric into the PL without a midfield general. But serious mistakes have been made - hence the disgruntlement.

Even if he shines at Southampton, doesn't mean he can come back an do the same at Spurs. Ask Raziak...

firstly. let me acknowledge my hatred for levy stems almost solely from him not signing Andrei Arshavin. He will never win me back. Its a totally kneejerk reaction, which happen to be my favourite type.

secondly. i am in the 'levy out - trillionaire arabs in' camp rather than the levy out camp. world of difference

thirdly. levy didnt buy arshavin. what a cunt.

I think the question that needs to be answered is not whether levy is doing a good or bad job. but instead can we really ever break into the top 4(5) using our current business model of sensible book balancing and bargain hunting.

I think the fact that we spend last season in the bottom half and this season looks to be disapprearing down the same U bend says NO.

Finally an article with some sense. Thank god the window is now closed and we can all move on.

Agree with most of the comments, have to keep Poyet out of that fat larger lout chairman up north who constantly says he a chairman of the fans.

Levy gets alot of abuse on these forums but everyone has to admit that he is probably one of the best in the league at the mo. Alright we may be short one or two world class players but i'd put the blame squarely on the shoulders of Comolli. There's something about him that gets on my tits.

Looking forward to the Villa game when we can all get back to talking about whats happening on the pitch and watching the mighty Spurs rise up the league table.

If come january we are in the top 6 and bring in a few quality players, who then will be screaming for Levy's head. Me thinks that idiot Ossie Dreams will be but hopefully his 20?????? mates will have seen the light and thrown him to the lions.

East Stand Danny's article is live a breath of reality based fresh air... Oh yes, let's sack the guy who has ensured that we a reone of the few teams in the top flight that are not massively in debt like Chelski and the Arse...

Danny is absolutely right. If you think football is about two groups of men in pretty kit kicking a ball about, you are not just archaic as he describes, but woefully naïve too...Modern football, expecially for those in or realistically challenging for the top 6 places is as much a numbers games as it is about kicking the ball... For those of you who are aware of this but think that Levy should still go, fair enough. But let's face it. How many people in his position would have bucked under Sir Alex's pressure and sold earlier? The gu demonstrated that he has balls of steel. Respect :) not many people could have gotten more mone out of the manure after they had said they would not go higher... and saing that he was cool with the treacherous Bulgarian rotting in the reserves was just class...no getting snotty about it...just a simple declaration that Spurs will not be held to ransom and that player insubordination is intolerable. If anyone's job is up for discussion, it should be Commoli's. It seems the guy is somewhat untouchable...

Please can we call him Fraizer not Camp**** (or Frazier). I'm gonna email the club and ask for that on his shirt in Brazilian style.

Pekhart can be recalled, but he has done well in the reserves while Fraizer has shone in the Championship, arguably closer to the PL. I have watched Pekhart in reserve matches, he's prolific but still raw and undisciplined. Trust Ramos, it's his ultimate decision.

if he had buckled earler we would almost certainly have got a top replacement in and we wouldnt have spent the last hours of the transfer window in thecgame of brinkmanship we did and lost.

It depends how much value you place on having a fully functioning forward line for half a season.

I suspect that failure to qualify for europe or early exits in the cups will prove the extra berbatov money to be fools gold.

Agree with the article (makes a change from you claiming we have signed a gazillion players only to find we haven't. Must confess that when I thought that we were bullied into selling Berbaf'koff to Man U I was a little pissed off with Levy to say the least, but having read his statement and reading the facts of the deal I now believe he got the very best out of a very bad situation. As for any fans who want to have a pop at him at the Villa game then why bother going, I go to support my team and that is what the players want to hear not boo's and chants against a Chairman who has put his heart and soul into this club, come on guys give him a break. As for the Campbell loan issue, many people have said we should have had an option to buy, tell me what use would that have been, if he has a stormer for us this season Fergie would just tell him not to agree to the move and that would be that. The only hope we will have of keeping him is if he does well and sees he won't have any chance of getting in the Man u team and decides to stay.

Hip hooray! Someone is talking some sense at last, we are stronger in 3 of the 4 departments in my opinion, first off in goal where we have got Gomes instead of the useless Robinson.

Then i feel we are stronger in defense, where we have brought in Corluka - who can play in various roles and is better than Chimbonda. Added to this we have players like King & Bale who are fit again.

But it is in midfield where we have really improved, gone are Tainio and some fans favorite Steed. But in have come in Bentley, Modric, GDS, & Corluka who can play DM. Which gives us so much more strength in depth, as well as quality.

The only place we haven't improved is in the striking positions as we all know, but maybe just maybe this won't prove as important as we all think? After all we have never had a problem scoring? It has always been at the other end where we have struggled! If we become a team that is harder to beat, maybe just maybe we will become a successful side? To end what I am saying it isn't ideal that we didn't bring in another striking option, but i know this much i would rather wait until January (where we will no doubt be looking) rather than but shit players like Heskey & Doyle!!!

Levy fights for this club(even thought he will eventually sell it for mucho wonga)and when you fight as hard as he does, then sometimes you get it wrong. The treatment of Jol and the last-minute shenanigans with the Bulgarian chain-smoker were not his finest hours. But has any other chairman (excluding Russian zillionaires) done more for their club than our man? The last-minute panic should not overlook that Modric, Gio, Gomes, & Bentley were all targeted from the end of last season. Compare this to Villa, Everton, Newcastle and others who only opened up for business in the last month.

Why is Comolli still at Spurs? After their years of working together, no doubt he's still a close friend of Ars*ne Wenger. Probably goes up to Totteridge for cuppa and cuddle on a regular basis. He cocked up the essential task before him, failing to get a another top class stiker to join Pavers and Bent before the close of the window. Pathetically, he blames his failure on nasty agents, when his JOB is making deals through agents. If I have one criticism of Levy, who I otherwise respect, is that DC was even recruited and has been retained after this debacle. Do the club a favour Mr. Levy, Bung Comolli in the pig bin?

Oh, Danny Boy. Well said, well summarized.

Spurs really do have more skillful players to work with this go-round. And it's not like they're lacking for versatility. Dos Santos could comfortably handle a striking role. Jamie O'Hara looks like he could handle the left wing role, port-side peg, too boot.

I really enjoyed watching Ramos' Sevilla squad. He has a vision for how he wants his team to play. Alan Hutton's return and Bale's growing skill and comfort in the Prem will bring more options and balance into our attacking play.

There's a lot to like in everything that's been done in Ramos' tenure. And a lot more to look forward to. Especially a settled side, ready to grow together.

One of the reasons , that we didn't get more strikers in , is that Manure was holding out for us to drop our price to their offer , hoping that we would cave in to them . Berbatov wanted to go , and he made sure that he wasn't in a frame of mind to play for us , so that we would get desperate to offload him . However if they wasnt going to buy him , and we got Arshavin in for example and Berbs didnt go , i feel that it would continue to disrupt the team having him about , plus putting a strain on our resource's keeping him and not playing him . Fergie knew what he was doing , causing unrest to us and disrupting us losing our 1st 2 games , in theory using the Berbatov situation to Manures advantage and disrupting our season . He hoped to get Berbs cheaper at the same time causing unrest in a rival team , but as soon as Man city got taken over , how fast did Manure react to meet Berbs at the airport and take him to carrington . I think that Levy has seen us right , yeah he maybe trying to Fatten us up to sell , but where's the problem with that ? We are Healthy , we got some cracking signings and some good youth players coming up , and in Juande we have a proper manager . I love Jol , but he did make alot of tactical mistakes ,but Juande is a Firm but Fair manager , and he knows what he is doing and with Gus we have a excellent management team with a chairman who backs up his manager . we can't go wrong !

The real root of the failures in our transfer negotiations was neither Levy nor Comolli. It was the tea-lady, Doris Landesman-Chuff.
You can imagine that the transfer window is always a particularly busy time, with meetings being held at Spurs Lodge throughout the summer. Now, Doris has never been an especially gifted maker of tea (she still forgets to use freshly drawn water, after all these years), so it was inevitable that, during the recent tumult, those gifts she had would be sorely stretched.
Doris is also something of a maladroit. Thus, while a meeting would be in full-swing, she was apt to push the trolley into the room at the most inopportune time - for example, just when hands were about to be shaken. And, on those occasions when her timing was perfect, she would inevitably make some other error. Often, for example, as an accompaniment to the beverage, she would furnish the conference table with plain biscuits, such as Rich Teas - when any fool knows that Chocolate Digestives or Custard Creams are required as a minimum in order to make a good impression. Observing the banal offerings, agents and players were quick to make assumptions about the club and - as they saw it - its tight-fistedness.
On those occasions when negotiations took place overseas, Doris would dutifully prepare a Thermos for refreshment during the long hours hammering out deals. At the point when our man would be gasping, he would withdraw his flask, bring the cup to his mouth relieved at the imminent moistening of his parched throat, only to discover that Doris had dispensed a cup-a-soup. Apart from this being cloying and insufficient to quench a thirst, you can imagine the ignominy of having to continue the most delicate of negotiations with a tomato-stained upper lip and chin.

You wouldn't know any of those if you only visited the mainstream sports sites, or other Spurs sites, or NewsNow. Only on Harry Hotspur's Blog do you get the true low-down on what really happened.

I'll be the first to admit that when the window slammed shut on us I was berating levy and his tinpot team, But now in the light of a few days and some more facts coming out I have to say that the respect that was there for him before has come back A LITTLE.

I agree wholeheartedly with JGM that the AA fiasco was badly handled and a deal should of be done and finalised way before the window shut.

Well done to levy for squeezing every penny out of manure for berbasulk but taking your eye off the ball and letting that Experienced striker slip through fingers is a big screw up.

One thing I cant forgive him for though is bowing down to the pound and dropping the case's against manure and pool, the top teams need to be taught a lesson and they need to learn that they cant get away with feeding stories into the press with the sole purpose of turning a players head.

DC has to go letting an agent screw up the deal for this unnamed striker goes to show that the guy hasn't got the balls and strength of conviction to get the players we need and strike the deals that suit us as a club, the chaff that he's brought in over the last few years is testament to how wrong he's got it.

If Levy gets rid of him in the next couple of months I will be a happy yid and it will bring that sense of belonging to the club that has been lacking over the last few days.

I'll be the first to admit that when the window slammed shut on us I was berating levy and his tinpot team, But now in the light of a few days and some more facts coming out I have to say that the respect that was there for him before has come back A LITTLE.

I agree wholeheartedly...

Not to seem terribly pedantic, AA is not an experienced striker at all, seeing as, technically speaking, he isn't one.

Good article...actually Great article.

The bitter taste to the end of the transfer window, can easily be dispelled by looking at the entire summer activity.

Just imagine how happy everyone would be if we had landed some combo of Bentley, Modric, Gomes, or Gio just mins before midnight. Everyone would be ecstatic, but yet still realize that there is work to be done (DM, another striker).

As for the business about Campbell only coming on loan with no option to buy, I do not really find it a big deal. It is not like he has a future at ManU. They are paying 30+ a piece for Berbatov and Tevez, and still have Rooney. They will sell him in the summer.

What if an option to buy at the end of the loan was discussed (would be pretty silly to think it didn't)? But ManU, having us by the short hairs in a sense, and Hull willing to pay 7 mil for him now, what do you think the option to buy would have been set to?

Easily 10+ mil one would have to think. If they felt Campbell was in no way worth that money (or going to be worth that money) than why waste the time putting it into the deal.

It would just leak out the same crazy "fans" calling for Levy's head, and they would be calling for his head because he's agreed to a outlandish buy option.

I am very much on the 'generally pretty happy with the dealings over the summer and the squad' side of the debate.

I have to ask, to the Levy out brigade, surely it is a bit previous deciding that the transfer activity has been disastrous and the squad is worse (worse than when, eaxactly?). Surely the time to answer that question, before even deciding how to deal with it (give the young squad more time, or start calling for Management heads) is at the end of the season, when we see how the team has performed!

also lets just clear up this arguement of if we are a stronger team than last season. point one: it was only 12 months ago robbie keane was being linked to aston villa for 7 million. he has a tendancy to hit purple patches and i dont know if anyone noticed this but he slowed us down in our counter attacks, most noticably away from the lane. this lead to the oppositions defenders getting back quicker and a lack of 2 on 2 action ;)

secondly berba scored 23 goals in ALL competitions and only around 12 goals his first prem season and i believe roughly the same last. take into account of those 12ish goals 4 of them were in one game.

with bale back and bentley in the squad you can guarantee crosses will be on the agenda. how many headers did keane score? or berba for that matter. bent and pav will have a far more physical presence and will give us a different look.

now im not saying we arent going 2 miss thos players but when you consider the areas strengthened it isnt so bad. remember king and bale were out virtually all of last season so hers my analysis of where we have become stronger and weaker since sept last year:

Gomes over robbo
hutton over chimbonda
king over kaboul
woodgate over dawson
bale over lee young pyo
bentley over lennon
jenas is still in there sadly ;)
modric over ghaly
dos santos over malbranque (im a big steed fan but the boy will be class when he gets going. remember how long it took henry to score his first for the goons)
keane over bent (but with the stronger mid do we really still need a striker who needs to make his own goals or a poacher)
berb over pav (same arguement for keano and benty)

this team has only become weaker in 2 positions overall in my analysis and their 12-15 prem goals a season can be replaced by the skills in our strongest midfield since the 80s and and hopefully predator like new strikeforce.

It is a curious observation, that whenever people are posting the names various regarding the recent signings, line ups, or indeed, player vs player comparisons, Corluka is systematically overlooked.

Is this a conspiracy? Has there been a memo in reference to his inegibility to play for Spurs this season that I've missed?

Corluka is potentially one of the, if not the purchase of the window.

With regards to criticism made to Levy for not continuing with his complaints to the FA for the tapping up of PSB and the Sulk:

1. Liverpool paid over the odds for PSB, made a public apology and a donation to our charity. I really don't know what good it would have done to keep Pointy, and I believe we are better without what would have been an even more irate irishman, had he not gone.

2. ManUre/Rednose would never have issued an apology - they are that far up themselves! Hence they would never have donated anything to Charity as they have got the FA muppets in their pocket. We knew that the FA wanted even more evidence - so although everyone knew it, we didn't have enough to prove it. The real evidence came on the Monday with the 'kidnap' - but they were playing silly buggers and would have (as they did) go with an official line of 'misunderstanding'. Levy was pushed to the precipice, and to parachute away with what he did (with the good grace of Cittehs late bid) was almost the best possible result.

As for dropping the ManUre tapping case for £££'s - we'll we wouldn't have come out anywhere near in decent condition had we not done so. Unrest in the squad, an even sulkier bulgarian twat, no money, and bugger all action from the FA would have resulted.

Am I the only one not forgetting that we weren't the only victims of tapping up this summer? Aston V*lla managed to keep Barry, but that's just because the fat waiter at Anfield couldn't get any money sanctioned. Funny though that no one is chastising V*lla for not pushing ahead with a complaint for this tapping up affair. Yes they kept a player who really really wanted to go, but got no apologies, no charitable donation, no financial benefits as compensation.

Nunchucks,
Agree, how crazy is it that our defense now has Corluka as a bench player. We've been clamoring for coverage for King, and now we finally have it, along with a bit of versatility in that he can play RB.

Granted our team will have trouble scoring goals at the same rate they did last year, but we will also be letting in alot less as well. For the following reasons:

1) Woodgate and Hutton
Woodgate - 12 PL games last year, Spurs conceded 16 goals (1.33 GAA). As opposed to 45 goals conceded in 26 games (1.73 GAA).

Hutton - 14 PL games last year, Spurs conceded 18 goals (1.29 GAA). As opposed to 43 goals conceded in 24 games (1.79 GAA).

Considering the effort of the team at teh end of last season, its impressive that our GAA was still drastically improved from our earlier form with Woodgate/Hutton at the back.

2) Gomes replacing Robbo. Huge upgrade. You can already see the improvement on corners and set pieces when Gomes charges out and grabs the ball out of the sky.

It's pretty clear that even without adding Corluka into the equation, the defense should be able to concede 10-15 less goals than last season.

I think what we lost in Berba/Keane our defense and goalie upgrade can make up the difference, and with our improved midfield we should actually be a better team than last year.

I'd agree with close to that. I think you could make a case for Steed over Gio for this season.

But you also forget to mention what this does to the bench:

1) Campbell and Gio/Lennon are now the 3rd/4th strikers which is a major downgrade from Defoe/Bent.
2) Huddlestone/Ohara should be better this year just from expierence.
3) Even though Dawson is worse from more experience he's an upgrade over Rocha.
4) Lennon is now on the bench, and upgrade over Taarabt/Boateng.
5) ____ for Tanio, it appears that Ohara is going to fill the role of a versatile tackler of the bench, but I'm not sure he has the same skill set as Tanio.
6) Gilberto/BAE slight downgrade from Lee.
7) Corluka big upgrade over Dawson at backup CB. Corluka/Gunter are a big upgrade from the makeshift RBs (Zokora/Ohara/etc) the team used last year at backup RB.

So our bench is much like our first team, big downgrade in strikers, big upgrade in defense, and probably a slight upgrade in midfield.

The former (current?) Arse man has been a disaster since day one. From stabbing Jol in the back to f*cking up our UEFA campaign this term. WHY would you bring in a guy like Ramos and NOT give him control of all transfers? Makes no sense. This system might work with an inexperienced manager, but not someone like Ramos.. or even Curbishley or Keegan for that matter. This experiment has been an unmitigated disaster from the off, with Frankie Arneson bolting and Jol having to stomach the glasses-wearing Gooner. Now, Wandy has been forced to give the rest of the league a head-start because of this baguette-eating mug's inability to line up a replacement when he had months to do so? Agents-shmagents. Please. Mr. Levy. Take DC out for a boat ride, like Fredo, and do what's best for the Spurs family.

Gus-Poet -

Do you think the Keegan debacle will exercise the mind of Levy? I'm inclined to think he'll at least reflect on it.

I keep hearing it said (in connection to Keegan's resignation) that managers must be given the freedom to choose which players come to a club and which go. It's the very powerful and persuasive motif at the base of Keegan's grievance.

Perhaps this will prompt Levy to consider in what ways the structure at Spurs either helps or hinders.

Berbatov and his agent made the move to Tottenham knowing it was a stepping stone to United. That was always their intention. We simply rented him for a couple of years.
Keane's a different story. NOT FOR SALE should have been Levy's stance. Keane is professional enough that he would have knuckled down. Selling Keane, like only getting Campbell on loan, shows Levy has obvious flaws.
Until Spurs crack the CL and start having consistent success, their best players will ALWAYS be lured away. In the absence of a UEFA salary/spending cap, the SAME handful of teams in all the big leagues will continue to win year after year after year....and continue to get all the best players. Only 3 things can disrupt that system:
1) Billionaires buy clubs like City
2) UEFA has the guts to change it
3) Teams like Spurs do their talking on the pitch and actually beat the likes of the top 4, instead of celbrating getting a draw.
