Gomes In For Nine Million Euros

Thursday, 26 June 08, 01:34 PM · Comments (103)

The Dutch are reporting that the PSV goalie Gomes is unrepentant over the row with his current chairman and is joining Tottenham for a mere nine million euros.

On the money front, if this is accurate then this is what they call in hairdressing circles, 'a snip'.

There's no love lost at PSV and their President Frits Schuitema called Gomes, who made unflattering remarks (something about a combover and bad shoes) about Chairman Reker, "a boy of twenty seven..." He added the 'The Octopus' was essentially an ungrateful git as he had been rewarded on three occasions with improved contracts whilst at the club.

Gomes for his part said, "I'm no Judas" which is good news for everyone, especially Spurs fans.

This is the same player who dumped us out of Europe last season, and i cannot for the life of me understand why we would want to sign him - As he is overrated imo.

Whilst I'm not sure Gomes is the answer, he will undoubtably a step up in class from what we had last year. I wish Robbo had refound his form but its hard to feel confident with him between the sticks. I'll always be fond of Robbo, the way you can see it means something to him when we score!

Still at least the hunt is over, I could see this beginning to stretch on and feared a last minute panic "Rasiak" type purchase in the one position on the pitch you want someone in early.

Ive said it before (Previous post) and i'll say it again.....the stats dont lie:
6) PSV fans were initially sceptical of Gomes, reasoning that Brazil wasn't known for producing quality goalkeepers. However, he quickly won the Dutch over, as this tribute video shows

7) Gomes has kept clean sheets in 60% of his appearances for PSV in the Eredivisie, a percentage that no other keeper has bettered in the league's history.

8) He once went 971 minutes without conceeding a goal (between 14/08/2004-12/12/2004) - the second longest period in Eredivisie history. He's since notched up further shut-out streaks totalling 956 and 817 minutes.

yep he's a nutter and will drop some clangers but he'll make up forit with brillance....And to quote Alex who got out of bigbrother....."remember i told you!" (im ashamed to say that ive watched big brother)

That I agree with to the extent that Gomes is a step up. Sadly though it just isn't a big enough step.

All in all though, provided we get out defense nicely sorted out we can still be an excellent signing as he has the height advantage we have missed out on and is a great shot stopper (as Robbo was/is).

I hope to be able to watch a corner go against us this season without having to close my eyes and hear the wrong crowd roar.

To those people who think he is a bad signing, how many games have you seen him play? Just wondering what you're basing these comments on exactly. Afterall, he's very highly rated in Holland. His record is outstanding and he has won 4 Eredivisie titles. If you're basing these comments on his 2 games against us in Europe, he conceded 1 goal in 3 and a half hours, saved 2 penalties and made 2 of the best saves i've seen all season (Keane at the Lane, and Malbranque in Holland.)

Clean sheet in 60 percent of his Eredivisie-matches.

No goals conceeded in 971 minutes in first season.

Followed by, in the same season a run of goalessness that lasted 817 minutes.

In his third season he had again a Blockbuster Gold Run type run. 956 minutes without conceeding. The season they won the Championship.

And friends,PSV won the Eredivisie 2006-07 title, with level points as Ajax, but PSV finished won on GOAL DIFFERENCE.

I'm not much for stats. They can be manipulated and truth be told.......... they're dull.

The crucial thing is we stop mucking about and bring in a guy who has a bit of swagger about him
and distance ourselves from the sympathy routine that unfortunately IS Paul Robinson at present.

It doesn't detract from Robbo's achievements to wish him well in fact it shows him
remarkable respect.

Equally important is that we shop wisely and bring in a man who doesn't need a hug. Maybe just a big welcome and a similar amount of respect.

I'm not going to go
down the Ledley King mindless fan route (You're MAKING him ill Harry, reporting he's crocked!) But if some of the comments on the Net are anything to go by the Brain Surgeons already have their
knives out

What was it we played for him ÂŁ1.5M?

He's been a great servant to the club and I don't think you'll find many spurs fans not wish him well. It'll be great to see our back line with someone behind them that can give them a little more confidence.

Nick. I'd sell Keane to accommodate Villa. Robbie can be a frustrating player to watch and I do get wound up by his tendency to blame others, whether for his runs into blind alleys or losing the ball too often. Still, he wears his c0ck on his sleeve, works hard, scores goals, has a well fit missus and chinned Davids, so there are pluses. Aware that I'm in a minority as someone who questions Keane's immortality, but you'll be pleased to hear the likelihood of me being appointed as Ramos's successor is slim. Villa and Keane are similar players in terms of size and role. Dream front line - Berbatov and Villa.

But given the choice of villa and keane, it would be not be a difficult one. Bear with me here. I think a lot of it for me is about attitude. He comes across as a player who waves his arms a lot, blames team mates and gets in the ear of the ref. Sure, I also see the dedication, hard work and moments of brilliance. For you doubters, Gomes has conceded 25, 24, 23 and 18 goals in the last four seasons (lowest goals conceded in the league each season)at PSV thats 90 goals in 136 games or under two thirds of a goal per game. We conceded 61 goals in 38 games at an average over 1.6 per game. PSV lost 12 games in 4 seasons since Gomes signed for them, that's 3 games a season. We lost 14 times in the league last term. The strikers may be worse in the Dutch league, but so are the defenders, hence Lee's return, so Gomes record IMO is VERY impressive. Amazing signing.

The problem is how long will it take for them all to learn to play together? I fear another season of patience is needed before the spurs truly go marching on!

I suspect the official signings of Gomes, Bentley, et. al. may take place on or post 1 July as this date marks the new financial calendar, so taxes/fees on their transfers may be applied over the next year rather than immed.
...that Iniesta would be nice in the middle.

Alot of people are going to be very surprised at how good Gomes is. Top quality keeper. I'm Tottenhamm thru and thru but damn it we got alot of idiots who support us. Robbo has been garbage for over 2 seasons only an idiot would keep their faith in him.

Ramos is a legend and has already brought in quality players Giovanni for the left wing, Modric for creativity in the middle and Gomes a BIG step up in the keeper department not to mention the defensive class he signed up in January.

Next up a DM and CB then we'll be capable of challenging anyone anytime. Next season can't come soon enough I wonder what DM we'll sign that will most likely be our next problem to solve.

Yid4Life, he must have. Why would he leave Barca to come and sit on the bench here? As for his position, I reckon LW, but the club site have him down as a striker.

On Gomes, judging by opinion on this and other sites, there seems to be a lot of doubt over him. Apart from the two games against us, can't say I've seen him, but hoping he does the biz and If Ramos wanted him, that's fine with me until proven otherwise.

Cish & Fhips anyone?
Ohhh PPPlease, were the frantic words of one Quinton Crisp, those of a certain age wont remember him, in fact either do I, but he did have one thing........ A Fine Dandy Hat, and indeed that is what we also own, however our "Hat" is now a big monster of a man, yes he will make others heads turn and yes others will titter, however like a Dandy Hat he will serve its purpose. Where a Dandy Hat covers the head whislt doing it in style, so to will "POB" keeping BAlls at bay (unlike Quinton Crisp) with a sense of flair...

Love and hate this silly season in equal measure but generally happy that we are being linked to some big names.

I am however slightly worried that with a completely revamped midfield it's going to take a long time for us to settle as a team. Last season, had our goals against record not been so shocking and we had (a lot) more success at holding onto a lead, we would have comfortably qualified for Champions League. This suggests that going forwards we had no real problems, yet all we seem to be doing (Gomes apart) is buying attacking midfielders. Consistent back four of Hutton/King/Woody/Bale would be awesome but feel we need cover for King and someone to sit in front of the back four like Senna did for Spain last night, otherwise we're going to have the same problems as last season, coupled with a possibly long bedding-in period for the midfield and a possible new attacker.

No real solution to this, just getting a leetle edgy as the season approaches.....

RVB, I think as long as we don't sell our starting midfield 4 from last season, the bedding in period of the newly acquired/yet to be acquired attacking talent should be short (thats my hope...).

I think that the KEY next signing is a defensive midfielder. I think a world class DM can cover having weaker CBs. My feeling is that Mascherano and Makelele make Terry and Carragher look better than they are. If you look at the two finalists at the Euros their centre backs aren't great but they have probably the two best DMs in the competition in Frings and Senna. If we can get a top quality DM, I think Dawson will benefit massively from having that screen in front of him. Here's hoping!

What are your thoughts on incoming monies from outgoing players?
I think:
Robbo - ÂŁ4m
Chimbo - ÂŁ4m
YP Lee - ÂŁ1m
Kaboul - ÂŁ4m
Tainio - ÂŁ1m
Stalteri - ÂŁ1m
Gardner - ÂŁ2m
Rocha - ÂŁ0.5m

Total - ÂŁ17.5m - without selling Lennon, Berbs, Zokora, Daws

One worrying thing on the Spurs site though - the new page 'Your greatest spurs moments'. Maybe I am reading too much into this, but I don't like this -

"There are also moments of individual brilliance - Robbie Keane's goals against Blackburn in 2006 or Chelsea last season, some of Dimitar Berbatov's goals in the last couple of seasons..."

Are they trying to get us used to the idea of him leaving?

Agree totally WM just concerned that Senor Ramos has no faith in midfield from last season and that JJ and Steed might be fringe players. Of course I have absolute faith in Senor Ramos that he knows what he's doing, just have far too much time to worry about it when we only have the euros to distract us........(and they're nearly over - July is going to be a long old month.....)

Gomes = brilliant news. I did "ask" that we signed him on here a couple of months back. At least we'll have a decent keeper who can throw the ball out instead of hoofing it aimlessly back to our opponents. With a bit of luck he'll also be able to make decent saves, deal with corners and crosses, and marshall the defence properly too. And nice to have someone in goal who knows what he's doing in the event of a penalty shoot out.

Robinson is crap. Watch our last few arsenal games and tell me this guy wasnt majorly responsible for the errors. He's a nice guy and can pull off a nice little saves every now and again but he is a liability, the amount of times he blunders is ridiculous CANT YOU SEE or are we still wearing them glasses we bought from the'aahhhh give him a chance shop,'. He would never get in the top four's team (mayb arsenal) and we need a keeper that can compete to be one of the best in europe not a keeper who is strugling to to make the top 10 keppers in the premier league. Think about it ; Cech, Vander saar, Reina, Given, James, Freidal, Hart, Green,Gorden, and a few others are all arguably better than Robbo. Crap might be a bit harsh but I can full heartedly say that he isnt in the top 25 goal keepers in the world and although I wish him good luck, I will celebrate the best move Spurs has made for many years. Finally we have got rid of our dodgy keeper and Signed Brazils No.1, its got to be an improvement, his stats are awsome, Robinsons are hmmmm...thanx for your hard work though robbo. Thats football or ya, ask Defoe, im sure your beloving Villa in no time, better start mansion hunting..GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Here's some of Robbo's moments at spurs, I swear he did a brucey Grob and took bungs, lol only kidding Robbo but honestly mate im not pointing fingers but you have cost us dearly in the past, ..
