Stewpot Downing... Buy Now Price...
Just a couple of quickies as the weather girl said to the blogger...
Stale news just in then that On Me Ed Stewpot Downing is now days away from seeing what Championship Supremo Gareth Southgate referred to as a 'London specialist'.
News hungry halfwits everywhere looking for a sign, a hope of a transfer from absolutely naffing anywhere and are translating this mention of a mystery medical man as coded language for Our Arry. And may the Lord have mercy upon our souls.
£12 millions is the figure. All I want to hear are those delicate tones of Danny saying, 'I'll give you six.'
Elsewhere, the rather glorious, not to mention lasvishly illustrated The Lane Of Dreams autographed by both Greavsie and Stevie Perryman has begun to turn up on ebay at £50. Do yourself a favour, don't be a plonker all your life and get yours half price direct from author Norman Giller HERE!

Maybe Arry should do likewise.
Buy Downing for 6 million and sell him on ebay for 12.
How is the weather ?
Just say 'NO' LINK
Its sunny in Stockholm, Dave.
How 'bout screw Downing and give Rose a try with some subs?
Reply to SweSpur:
What's the word on the Stockholm streets regarding this Marcus Berg chappie SweSpur?
£12M for an attacking winger who was the penalty taker for his team last term... Id be looking for 10-15 goals comfortably.....
How many did Stupot get again.....?
if there are no better options ! eg Young , Maxi , Bastos , Turan ..... then fine but no higher than 8-10 mil
i don't dislike him as much as some other spurs fans but do see him as yet another lightweight midfielder who can't actually beat his man and relies heavilly on the quality of the delivery ! ie Bentley (who IMO why sell for the quoted 8 mil when thats the price of fucking Diomansy Kamara!!)also Lennon could get injured and unless we are planning on keeping players like GDS (which again i hope we are !) Why sell Bentley ? who i guarantee will go on to be a success elsewhere ! shame its not with the club he supports .
i do trust Harry though .... the job he did last year was phenomanal ....and signing Wilson was brilliant ! the sort of player we have beeen crying out for .
any further news on RVDV or Sneider ?? as i would love it ! (kevin keegan stylee) bloddy love it if we signed either or both of those ! COYS!!!!
There's only two Xabi Alonso's... LINK

Everyone thinks he is the greatest upcoming striker we have had in great years. The media is going wild, rumours everywhere. The are talking about a price around 120 MSEK (approx. £9-11m), and that every club is after him.
We have had loads of media coverage from the U21 during the championship and the Swedish team has been very open for communication through media, they've become very popular.
Berg is a quite down-to-earth kinda guy, calm when off the pitch.
I don't know what you have seen from him but he's a great fox-in-the-box kinda player.

Thanks for that. Funny how we're being linked with fox-in-the-box type players when we're crying out for leading the line type forward.
I'm all for snapping up the best youngsters around, but with JD and Modders who can play as 2nd striker (not to mention the pointy shouty one) do you think he's better than what we have already? Better than Pav? Bent? JD?
Worst case scenario, at £11m tops, he'll probably be a better buy than a Downing

Does this mean we have no interest in signing Robben, or are we only signing him as cover for Downsyndrome who is out till December?

Play for Foolham because they're in the Europa Cup/League/whatever? Or play for Foolham because they're willing to pay more per week and may fly to off to some places you've never heard of before?

In my mumble opinion, I think Downing is ok - the amount of work he does covering back is excellent. I'd have him at the club, in these times of inflated fees, especially if we could get him for under 10. The guy needs a chance when he's got that white (and yellow) shirt on.
The problem is, that it's just dragged on for so many seasons...
I think that no news is good news.
It seems obvious now that Commolli was sniffing around everything available like a dog round lampposts. Which was why there was so much more going on last year and why all the sellers thought they could screw us.
Many contracts end on June 30th so we may see a bit of action in the next week or two.

Well, he's born 86, so he's young and I would value him at the same class as Defoe or a more complete version of Bent.
He tries to score when he get the possibility, 7 goals in 4 games says it all I would say.
Berg would be a tough signing though, he's chased by alot of clubs according the media.
I think Bajrami would be a better signing for Spurs since he's a leftwinger with alot of technical ability and he can use both foots. And the best with it all, he's playing in Sweden, then we don't have to empty our pockets to bring him in.

Reply to HarryHotspur:
That's what I think. What would be nice is if we could sign another Wilson or Valencia type like Steve Bruce did for a million or two. I know this wouldn't be seen as a major coup but in my eyes is just as much of a gamble as buying Downing for £12m or Bentley for £15m.
We managed to get BAE for a pretty decent price (although it has taken him a while to look like a footballer). The likes of Robben / RVN et al are likely to turn their noses up due to the fact that we're no longer a big draw, aren't in the CL and don't pay top wages.
On another note on my recent jolly to Turkey every other market stall had football club beach towels, didn't see a Spurs one at all (just the Sky 4). Now I know these are all knock offs and none of the sale proceeds end up at the club however it does indicate that as a global brand we are falling behind more and more.

Reckon if we each chipped in the cost of the book we could buy Newcastle instead?
SweSpur, I thought Berg signed for BMJ's Ajax a week ago? If not, I still wouldn't go for him, too expensive and would probably not feature in our first eleven for some time.Anyhow - the thought of Stu Downing at WHL made me utterly depressed, he's not the kind of player we should be looking at.
I'n no big Downing fan (haven't seen him have a decent game for England yet) but ......... one - he will fit into the work ethic left side of midfield and will make us more solid, and two - once Arry gets hold of him I think he'll improve (like Lennon this season) - if we can get him for less than 10mill I think it'll work out ok
Reply to Trembly:
Er, file that one in the same folder as the £18M for Bent rumor.
"Yes, we'd like your starting central midfield please. No? Okay, well how about you throw in some cash to sweeten the deal?"
I'm holding out hope that Shitteh keep overcrowding their squad and we can pinch Stephen Ireland from them like we did Charlie. He'd be the perfect partner for Wilson in the middle of the park, I feel.
Thanks but no thanks on Downing, especially coming off injury. I say let Modric keep doing his thing out there, and keep Bale and Gio around as alternatives if and when we need a different look.
Reply to thedogs:
He is fucked at the moment, why should we buy him?
I've got to say I do like Kenny Jones at Sunderland. I remember him playing against Rio Ferdinand and giving him a torrid time, Rio is just about as good as they come in my eyes. He's big, strong and fast. I think he'd make a great foil for JD. As much as I'd prefer RVN or the like don't think its going to happen.
As for the bit about Bent scoring a load of goals even when we didn't create that many chances. Bent is the reason we didn't create much, his first touch is awful and his movement is worse than that. Its very difficult to create for someone who stands still most of the game. As such he's quick of feet but slow of mind and he needs to go (or be 4th choice)
that's my point the likes of Jurgen, Gazza, Ginola etc are being forgotten and although we've never qualified for the CL we've always had some world renowned players, these days we don't get those types and our star is on the wane.
Babel over Downing all day long. Considering their policy of one up front, offload Bent the other way. Strangely, I think he'd do well for them.
Reply to Ginge1:
too true.
creating chances requires a forward actually looking to get into space or make runs.
final balls were we fell down. but then it is a hard ask when you are required to get the ball in the vicinity of your strikers shin when he is hiding behind the oppositions two biggest defenders.
Reply to Nunchucks:
Babel was at the Steve Nash NBA soccer thingy in NYC the other week and by all accounts was a bit of a star turn with his tricks and the like. I'm sure I read somewhere that he was doing tricks with Egdar Davids who he seemed to be very good mates with. Didn't Super Ed leave us under a bit of a cloud? If such i'm sure Babel would ask Ed's opinion which may put us at a disadvantage.
Couple of things.
Can we cease our "interest" in Maxi Rodriguez now? I am not taken by the idea, largely cos his current team WANT him to go, and he DOESN'T WANT to go to Spurs (a not uncommon trait these days). Hardly the foundations of a productive relationship IMO.
Berg is great. Ajax haven't bought him. His valuation has nearly doubled since the Euro U-21s and BMJ has cooled off any interest.
Pavlyuchenko. Now here we are again, the press saying we're getting rid, Villareal wanted him for a cut price. We've turned around and said we want Senna and another guy in exchange! Eh? As much as I think Senna would be brilliant alongside Wilson, it seems a tad fanciful, again. Oh, and the other story is Pav to Roma with Vucinic coming the other way. Why?
DV,
Much as I find your steadfast defence of Messr. Bent admirable, I think you might want to give up now. ODM and many others won't have that he is a good striker (which he undoubtedly is). I personally would see the back of Defoe before Bent. Cos I like to see us score goals, not miss, or be caught offside with that much regularity thus negating any chance of scoring. I don't give a fuck if they come off his shin, if they go in. Defoe does hit a sweet ball, but if it goes wide who benefits? Scuff it and watch it roll in, I say
Of course, it's silly season. The only bit you don't need to make up if you are a hack is "Nobody but Downing wants to go to Spurs, and he's injured".
Reply to MysteriousStranger:
what a load of crap
Reply to MysteriousStranger:
Yeah, don't see much point in a Pav for Vucinic swap. I like Pav, in part because he's a goofy bastard like Gomes, but also because I think he's a smart player. When he's engaged, he gets himself into good positions and can pass the ball around with some distinction. That makes him a good focal point for an attack built mainly around keeping the ball on the deck, which seemed to be Harry's preference given our personnel. Pav's height is a bit of a red herring that way because he doesn't strike me as any great shakes in the air.
Anyway, the trick with him seems to be coaxing those good performances out of him consistently. A model Spurs player, in other words. I wouldn't sell him unless he's getting replaced by someone of Huntelaar's class. Pav and Defoe looked to be developing into a productive pair before the latter got hurt, and I'd like us to give them a chance to make good on that promise next season.
Reply to jolsgonemental:
I do remember one peach of a pass from Thud to JD at the end of last year. It's moments like that make me feel we shouldn't sell Big Tom and if he insists on going, sell him abroad (La Liga would suit him). The heat might make him sweat a few more pounds off as well!

Bent is good striker in the right team. Unfortunately for everyone involved, Tottenham ain't that team.
He'd be a much better fit for Everton or possibly Villa. Even for Liverpool as Torres insurance.
Reply to MysteriousStranger:
I was happy when we got rid of JD as I did think he wasn't that good and vastly overated. I do believe however he improved vastly at Pompey especially his hold up play and has looked a different player since he came back.
Bent scores goals at a decent rate. He is not even average at anything else. Also in my opinion he is only an above average goal scorer. He will do well at a team looking for upper mid table and if we are happy to stay where we are in terms of league position he suits us.
I also think he would / has struggled to work with either Pav or Defoe whereas those two looked quite good together. As such I wouldn't let him go on the cheap as he'd be a decent addition to a Sunderland or the like but I'd rather have a target man that gives us at leat one striker that can head the ball. I'd be happy with a swap of Bent for Jones, Bent may score more goals than Jones but I think Kenny would give us more options and a better balance.
Reply to MysteriousStranger:
seems that only two people need it explained !
Bent is not a quality striker ( IMO ). Defoe is.
Bent couldn't find space in a Big Yellow Storage unit. most of his goals rebound off his arse or shin, and the look of suprise when he reels away after scoring is priceless. Defoe is 10 times the player Bent is. i'm not one for slagging off our current squad, but to say Bent is better than Defoe is laughable.
expanded.
can i put my shoes back on now ?
Im not convinced that Bent is always in space. I have watched many games involving bent and am always to be found screaming at him to make the obvious run to the near/far post or spin the defender in preparation of a through ball.
he strikes me as a bit of a coward to be honest who is far more interested in shirking responsibility.
Modric = class
Palacios = class
Defoe = good but not class
Woodgate = good but not class
King = was class but crocked so now only good
The Rest = variable, mild, some bright spots
Spurs ≠ European football, Top Four, High wages
The reason we've signed no-one so far and most of the names mentioned are as exciting as The Organist Entertains is stated above, i.e. we're just not good enough yet, have a great deal to prove, it's gonna take time and as things stand, no-one of class is interested in us.
Bent's always looked the perfect striker if you want to lump it up from a 5 man midfield. He'll chase down lots and has got plenty of pace.
However, He don't link play up too well, and looks clumsy with his passing. I just don't know if he's got the nouse to play with a more attacking midfield.
JD links up well, and chases down
Pav tries to hold up play, and can have nice little touches
Keano - best not mention him at the mo
Bent's the bad fit, I think he's one dimensional despite being a good scorer.
I'm all for balance DV, but it's this ill-conceived idea that just a couple of extra squad players as depth is going to take us top 4.
Now repeat after me DV: "LM, CM and target man (not Bent); LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man"....come on lads join in, let's make it happen....LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man; LM, CM and target man" AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Darren Bent has never scored 20+ goals in the premier league. He scored 20 for Ipswich in 2004/5 in the Championship. His best in the premiership is 18 for Charlton in 2001/2002.
Repeating bullshit ad infinitum does not make it fact.
I think I may have stumbled upon a way of getting rid of Chimbonda - LINK
In fact the player himself might prefer it to Blackburn
Don't like that idea with our current squad. Pav and JD are our two best strikers at the moment, and if their brief time together in January was any indication, they should play up front together.
I don't like Keane as a winger. Rafa playing him wide left was a significant factor in his demise for the Dippers, was it not?
Also, an attacking force of Keane, Modric, Lennon, and Defoe? I guess you could reason that the other lot won't see 'em coming!

Bent’s indeed scored a good number of goals considering the ‘limited supply’ of ball (successfully completed passes) to the strikers last season.. However, this problem was not solely down to aimless lumping of the ball forward by Dawson et al, or the inadequate vision of the midfield, but by extremely poor movement by Bent himself, who seemed incapable of finding space, particularly when playing alongside Pav or Keane – when he seemed (excuse the pun) hell bent on occupying the same square metre of the pitch for the majority of play.

Bent will never play for a CL side unless he moves to Scotland or Norway or some other piss poor league. Man U, Chavs, Woolwich & the bin dippers wouldn't touch him with a barge pole and we're going nowhere fast with him as one of our top 3 strikers. Sad but true.

Anyone else think Obika deserves a crack at the 4th striker spot if Bent is sold? My only slightly wishcasted strike force for next season:
Defoe, Huntelaar, Pavlyuchenko, Obika
It's a shame we won't land the Dutchman, but I'm going to cling to that dream until he signs elsewhere or Real announce he's staying.
Alternatively, IF we had a decent striker instead of mister hide and seek, we'd be in the Champions League pervo head.
Reply to A_Felching:
We'd be in the Champions League had we spent £16.5m on a player in a position we needed to fill more at the time rather than another striker to grace our bench.

A free role behind the striker(s). Fuck Keane off out of it he thinks he's better than playing second fiddle behind Modric (the imigery).
Reply to davspurs :
Never mind all that. What's the latest on the steroid abuse in the PL???
Reply to TMWNN:
That sounds like either a diamond midfield or a 4-5-1 with one of Pav and JD on the bench. If the former, then why do we need to buy another CM? If the latter, do you sit three strikers every week in favor of Modric playing off a single forward up front? With our current squad, that'd be something like £35-40M of strikers watching from the stands week in and week out.
Remember too that Modric struggled in that free role early in the season because nobody was getting forward for support from midfield and Pav/Bent was the only outlet. All too easy for the other side to just mark Modric and the striker out of the game. Attacking midfielders who get their asses into the box from your LM and CM spots would be a must to make that formation viable.
Apology accepted.
To answer your question; Klinsmann scored 20 in 94/95, many since including Defoe and Keane have beaten Bents 12 for us, as I'm sure you know.
I have to agree with you that Bent's goals per league game are impressive at .38 per game. Ronaldo's statistic is .39 per game, but that's not the whole story is it?. Real have bitten man ure's arm off at £80 million for the winker, whilst the mackems are quibbling over £18 million for Bent.

It's a bit chicken and egg isn't it? I mean, are we supposed to field player formations according to their a(vaila)bility, or field players according to formations?
My preference would be the latter, the best formation to defeat whatever team. Getting a team and basing it on just a 4-5-1 or whatever is useless. We must have at least 2 practiced and effective formations, and we must have the personnel to fit.
Truth is that we're rather short of this even with all the players we have on the books. We started to have the semblance of a decent first 11 in one formation, and even experiments with wing backs started to look fruitful - but also exposed our weaknesses as a team and that of individual players.
Reply to Trembly:
I think we have the personnel to do at least two formations successfully...
4-4-2
Gomes
Corluka--Woodgate--King--Assou-Ekotto
Lennon--Jenas--Palacios--Modric
Defoe--Pavlyuchenko
4-2-3-1
Gomes
Corluka--Woodgate--King--Assou-Ekotto
Palacios--Huddlestone
Lennon--Keane--Modric
Bent
Reply to Longwell:
Could go with Hutton and Bale as the fullbacks in the 4-2-3-1 to make it more of an all-out attacking formation.
Cana or Sena and Ruud.
Reply to Ginge1:
In the words of The Bard: "...he's not even in the top three strikers in his family," probably.
Reply to Longwell:
Cool. Do you think we can challenge with these line-ups? Then there is the ubiquitous question of what happens when one of them goes off form or on the treatment table?
I support this team, I really do - and believe we have decent enough foundations, but if we can improve on certain players then I would love it.
Some of our talents are still a season or two away from maturing imh, and this is the sole reason why I mourn our lack of Europa league presence - the ability to give them another opportunity for a run out in a competitive match that they can claim ownership and responsibility for. Early rounds carling and fa is their progression schedule this season. I honestly hope they do take their chance when given it, but we need our 1st teamers to focus only on challenging in the prem.
Reply to Trembly:
If everything went right, we could challenge the top four with those lineups. Challenge, but probably not supplant any of them. And that's if everything went right. We're two or three class signings away from having a more realistic shot, I think.
Targets: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Taye Taiwo, and either Stephen Ireland or Raphael Van der Vaart.
Gomes
Corluka--Woodgate--King--*Taiwo*
Lennon--Palacios--*Ireland*--Modric
Defoe--*Huntelaar*
Gomes
Hutton--Woodgate--King--*Taiwo*
Palacios--Huddlestone
Lennon--Modric--*Van der Vaart*
*Huntelaar*
Now that's bangtidy. Won't happen, of course--we'd be lucky to sign even one of those four--but it's a decent gauge of how close/far we are from a CL quality squad.
I agree that missing out on the Europa League was a missed opportunity from the development perspective. I assume Harry would've had the stones to tell the haters to FRO and play a bunch of the kids again, regardless of our league position. I can only hope he takes a similar view of the cups, particularly if we get some easier draws in the early rounds.
Reply to Longwell:
I grant you a one time use of bangtidy.
Stephen Ireland. Ah yes, I recall it was he who explained when he went AWOL from Citeh once that "his Nan had died". Which was a fabricated excuse for his staying in Eire and getting on the sauce. A class act indeed. Is he there to be the yin to Wilson's yang?
Reply to MysteriousStranger:
Correction. We like accuracy. He pulled out of playing for Eire. And the getting on the sauce bit, well apparently the real excuse was his partner "having a miscarriage". Blame it on my Irish friends misinforming me. Still, now we understand why he made the story up.
Perhaps he was simply drowning his sorrows. Anyway, he's a nutter, who has said in the past he "hated football". Turns out he'd fit right in to Harry's team after all.
Reply to A_Felching:
Only because we were left with too bob shite after the cock up of last years transfer window. Anyway i'm not saying he's a terrible player, he's just average, perfect for a mid table nothing club like Charlton used to be, or the Spammers hope to be, or like we seem to be, we won't to get better we replace the bob average with good or outstanding (although that may prove out of our reach at the mo).#
Reply to MysteriousStranger:
Nutter - far from it. Quite level headed actually. His only problem is he doesnt want to play for his country, and so fabricated a lie to get out of doing so.
He's excellent, excepional actually and not far off the quality of Gerard and Lampard. Not quite there yet, but he's improving and could get to that level.
Would be excellent to have him, but we've no chance. He'll fit right in alongside Citeh's stars, and probably be the stand out performer on many occasions.

Can I just say that I'm stunned by the levels of greed for show prior to the barely opened transfered window. Eto'o, gawd bless him, is a talented chappie that has made good from the hardly prosperous background he emerged from. But honestly, a reported £250k p/w (after tax?) and a £12-£15m sign-on bonus? I know I shouldn't believe what the papers say, but that shaved butthole that Whinger likes to play with complained that he was only getting £70k per week after tax. The audacity! Next they'll be asking for a team of planquin bearers to bring them onto the Pitch so they don' have to get their boots muddy before the game. Obviously they'll need their carriage returned before the game starts or we'll be men over the permissible 11. Unless of course, they got it added in their contract, that they are carried by their lesser team mates.
) It's just that actual news is so thin on the ground at the mo, I'm almost worried that it is only going to be a 2 or 3 man personnel change - and they might all be sales.

What's this Bale to Brum nonsense? Can't be true, can it? I like Bale. If we bought him as 'one for the future', well, we haven't planned much of a future for him, if we're considering selling him. Unless, of course, that was an option all along - nurture him for a while, then cash in. Coincidentally, I think he picked up his second foot injury in a match against Brum, didn't he?
I think he'll be a great player - and already is a fine one. His position seems undecided, though. Is he a left-back? He's better at attacking that defending, but is he really a left-winger, either? Surely having more than one string to his bow makes him a greater, rather than lesser, asset.
Leaving without once starting a winning PL match is like Zokora leaving without once scoring a PL goal. In Zokora's case it's probably for the best - after all, he's joining an 'adventure' in Sunderland. Yeah, that's cowboy country, that North-East. But not Bale. Keep Him, I say.
The Beeb is running with a story from a Spanish paper that Benzema has signed for Real Madrid. Surely that would mean Huntelaar is on his way out. Potentially good news for us, I suppose.
Bad news? Could be that ManU will go after him too if SAF wants another top class striker to rotate in with Rooney and the Continental, Benzema having been mentioned as just such a target for the Mancs.
Can't shake the feeling that, at the end of the day, we'll be sniffing around for scraps under the table, though.
But, if you look carefully into the history of the development of the typewriter, you'll find the horse's carriage was indeed the origin of the term. This wasn't, in fact, due to the mail being delivered by a horse and carriage, but because the first typewriters (circa 1780s) were horse-powered. Usually two horses were required to pull the letter-keys down, since they were originally very cumbersome. The 'proto-typewriters' were large, compared to the later versions - some as big as a modern tractor.
"Proto-typewriter" was a nice touch.
In this adorable sculpture, the interactive function of the carriage return has the effect of producing an erection in the figure's genitalia: quite an interesting way of subverting the 'carriage return'.

If Yuri Zhirkov signs for Cheatski, does that add substance to Joe Cole to Spurs rumours? Some seem to think yes, others no - apparently, Cole is due to be offered a new contract soon. Would he really want to leave a CL club and come to us? I doubt we could match his wages, for a start.
Reply to 9__37:
Well, he is coming off a pretty nasty injury, which probably changes the calculus a bit. We would certainly be a step down for him, but I think the need for regular playing time in order to force his way back into the national team for the World Cup might make us a more realistic destination. Cole is not the only player of whom this could be said, too.
Sucks to be hanging our hat on that being among our principal attractions, but that's the reality.
Zhirkov is being signed because they do not have another left back alternative to Ashley Cole. I wouldnt mind seeing Joe Cole at Spurs - infact I'd love it. He's technically Englands best player and would offer a real goal threat coming in from the left.
We are being linked with good left sided players: Cole, Young, Robben etc.... but will we actually make a purchase?
Times running out. If Levy & Redknapp want a big turn out at Wembley in 3 weeks for the Barca game they better make a major signing or two....... and quick. (i do however imagine that alot of Yids will be happy wneough to go along just to see the superstars that are Barcelona. The meer fact Spurs will be there too is surely a bonus).

But for a player who spends a fair bit of every year on the treatment table he'd be perfect for us. He must also have spoken to the likes of Anderton, Ledley, Sir Les and the likes to garner the quality of our treatment table. This would surely be another draw in coming to us
Neither of these articles offer any special insight into the Cartoon Army crisis, but the facts of the disaster give pause for thought, even if you're not a fan. With their Championship competitors already assembling their troops for the coming 46-game campaign, the Barcodes are like a ship becalmed. We haven't learned anything new in the 'business model' Ashley used, but he sets a stunning example of how financial profligacy turns the foundations of your club to sand.
Does this mean that Spurs should stick within secure financial parameters, or does it mean we should splash the cash and speculate to accumulate? As it stands, the fact that we're a PLC compromises our clout. But I'd like to see us gamble a bit more on the wage-structure, as a draw to the bigger names. But I'm also suspicious the credit crunch could bring the whole PL house tumbling down in the near future. As I'm not a chairman of a company, it's easy to imagine spending other people's money.
As for Cartoon Army, what if none or few of their high-earning players are bought by other clubs? Does Ashley (or the new owner) have to honour their contracts, crippling the club further, or can they be terminated (the contracts, not the players)? The club is so far behind schedule in making plans for the new season, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it dropped a further league.

He probably would get a lot of game tme in most sides, but if Ancelotti plays the sam system as his predecessors then Zhirkov doesnt exactly fit in along with Cashley. would need to be a 442 to cater for him. Anyway. He's a terrific player and would rather he was coming to us than Chelsea.
3 big signings Redknapp has been saying, so I think we can forget about 12 out and 6 in. I thik we'll let Zokora, Bentley and Bent go for £30-£35m (what a financial loss we have there) and we'll bring in a CM, LM and striker. Best home defense in the league last season means we dont necessarily need strenthening there - we've other priorities.
Add to the exit list Rocha, Giovani, Taarabt, Gunter, Boateng and promote Bostock, Rose, Obika, Townsend and Dervitte to the first team squad, with a respectale squad number, and give them minutes or ship them out on loan until January.
Perhaps I was too subtle or oblique with my Palanquin analogy. It took me all night to work out that the word was indeed palanquin and not pallendrom, palladrin etc.

We were entertained at the Burj last week in their underwater restaurant. On the adjacent opposite was a chirpy bloke talking about football. Without being rude to my guests, I couldn't help but keep an ear open as they talked sponsorship, branding etc. I heard Ogilvy and Mather mentioned and somthing clicked. The bloke wasn't just another bloke using football talk as a business ice breaker, but I think it was probably that Paul Barber chap.
I eventually brought the subject up at my table, and asked my Dubai counterpart if they knew anyone famous in the restaurant and they said that the big boss man on the table next to us was Sheikh something or other and was head of Dubai Properties amongst other things.
Now their logo wouldn't be too bad on our white shirts, and their building industry association may even help with our financing issue.
The talk on our table moved on to Ronaldo and Kaka, and I didn't wat to interrupt the next tables discussions but they seemed to be getting along well. Last thing I heard was Huntelaar, Van Nistelrooy and Van der Vaart.
I hope that this actually pans out, both for the stadium and the players.
Another lunchtime wasted scouring the net for major transfer news only to be left frustrated by the lack of activity.
If MArtin o'Neill would just buy Bentley, Bruce buy Bent & Zokora we could then buy Young or Cole, Cana and Huntelaar.
Reply to RJ1882:
Agree with most of this. Few quibbles, though.
If we sell him, Bentley might not be as big a financial loss as you think. I believe a substantial portion of his transfer fee was based on appearances and other such bonuses. That may help explain why he couldn't sniff a game this spring and why Levy seems willing to let him go for £8M or so. That may not be too far off what we actually owe Blackburn for him. If Z-Diddy and the killer B's end up shipping out, I figure the total loss will be on the order of £6-8M. Not great, but better than £10-14M.
Gio is the only one of the fringe guys you listed I'd be sorry to see go. It's all well and good to look to promote our youth players, but Gio is better than the two guys who play his position, Rose and Townsend. And we invested a lot more to get him. I think he should stick around as cover for our wide midfield players, particularly if Bentley moves on.
Why do we never get anyone on board early? Ya know, give them a full pre-season? Let them learn the language/settle in London/Whatever else they cry about.
It seems to me like by buying people at the last minute all it serves to do is give players an excuse for poor performances...... "Ahhh, he didnt get a full preseason in/He already played a full season" that doesnt explain a players poor first touch of finishing now does it?
Maybe the plan is to get us all begging for any kind of transfer to lessen the blow of selling all of our decent youngsters and replacing them with Downing and Crouch.
This window feels like a sash window with only the top open! A load of hot air moving around and nothing of any consequence coming in.

Dont see how you got confused or could twist what I said - I explained it all so clearly.
My sister in law = chloe
my sister in laws mother in law = Sarah
So Sarah heard from Chris Brunts mum at Church on Sunday past all about Chris's honeymoon, on which he took his child. Anyhow, also a mention of a move to another premiership club and she mentioned Spurs. I'm simply the only Spurs fan alot of people know, so I automatically sprung to Lotties mind. She told her people, who told my people and I got fed the story.
Hopefully doesnt happen - he's shit - but its a possibility.
Brunt i wouldn't actually mind. Been very impressed with him for a couple of seasons . Great technique, passing and vision. A much better player then credited, and easily better then Downs.
Better than Downing? Really?
He's ok, not completely awful, but he's limited. i have been watching him closely since his time at Sheffield Wednesday and he looks great in the lower leagues. He finished the season strongly and got hsi fair share of goals - also is good with a dead ball. Not too sure how good he is at going past people though, being creative.
Downing gets a lot of stick, and will never be an England player. But I think after a few months we'd all change our opinions of him and realise he has talents and could play for us, a team pushing for top 6 and no more, rightly.

Thanks for clarifying. Perhaps too much vino is making me read between the lines too much.
WRT Brunt. He had his moments, but why would we want a left footed player who specialises playing on the right???

Hurrrah!
Who?
Here it is, lunchtime (west coast US) and I'm hoping for big time transfer news.
The reality: Sweet FA.
Only two more months of this.
Oy.
You only think its bad being a Spurs fan and having no transfer activity. Guy i work with is a Coventry fan and he is disillusioned that they have yet to sign anyone and is pinning his hopes on them signing 'Andrew driver' to lead their championship charge next season.
Fuck! How depressing.
I'm away to watch The Take - lethal show, recommended. SKY1 right now!!!!

I was going to look them all up, but I couldn't be arsed!

SNATCH IS THE DADDY
Scum is the daddy, right, and don't you forget it.
ps that wasn't you in the potting shed was it?
'The Wembley Cup organisers, IMG, has announced that due to huge demand, an additional allocation of over 5,000 tickets for Spurs fans have been released for the match against the European champions.' - the official site.
That's nice of IMG to increase the capacity of Wembley by 5000.
Of course, it has nothing to do with not selling the original tickets.
New FIFA rankings:

US up to 12! Heady stuff. Not sure how England managed to slide a spot.

You've obviously not seen it. Shame on you.
Where's your tool?

never got the chance to say big up usa for the other nights performance
you lot ran and ran and ran and ran and only when you really got too tired to run Brazil beat you.
If spurs, or England for that matter put graft in like that we'd go far.
I do believe the expression is 'bangtidy' old chap
big up your bad old selfs
Reply to mcspurs99:
Many thanks. Yes, the graft was nice, but I hope we can develop some depth. Right now, US have a starting 11 that can compete and hold their heads up. That's actually a lot; it's taken 30 years or so to get there. But the quality really tapers off after that.
Bringing up the rear:
San Marino, Anguilla, Montserrat, American Samoa, & Papua New Guinea, all on zero points.
Anyone know what these teams offer, apart from votes for Blatter?
MArtina coles - The Take
A 4 part English Gangster series on Sky 1 of the last weeks. Excellent viewing. I dont commit to watching much on TV - I'm normallyjust a 'flicker' but I made a big effort to tune in for this. Very enjoyable (maybe thats the wrong word) viewing.
