Half Time Harry

Sunday, 31 August 08, 08:05 AM · Comments (45)

A game of two halves and that was the first one then.

Gomes like the good farmer has been outstanding in his field. Bentley looks up for it and Zokora is bizarrely looking competent. Modric has been invisible and Two Saints has seen little of the ball.

Lumphard and Essien have been having a go, with Anelka being quiet enough so far. Deco appears to be an unpleasant oik and will no doubt enjoy his time with Terry & Co.

Bent mistimed swinging an artificial limb and a Brazilian gentleman by the name of Belletti respoded by burying it.

Cheatski seem to be snuffing out anything too danger shaped we throw at them down the middle and I wonder if we couldn't drag their shape if we took it a little wider to them in the second half.

Easy to say but never the less true we are strikerless. Add to this we are desperately missing Keane. There has been virtually no pointing or shouting all this half. Seriously though, we have no one holding up play.

Bent who had only won a corner needed to win a place in our hearts and his goal was tip top.

He made Chelsea look just like Norwich. HERE

Richard Keys says Chelsea had been cruising up until that point. Monkey pawed twit.

We got out of jail there, things have to be better in 2nd half because you know chelsea will come at us till the very end, Bent needs more support..

Whats with Bently tapping his chest when taking a corner ? Is he sticking it to the chavs or is it sign for the type of corner he is taking ? or both ?????

My guess is he's an honorable man and seeing out his deal with them. Unlike Bulgaria's finest....

today however i would argue he did more good than harm. and i will give him credit where its due.

in the long term he has no place in the Spurs first 11,

Zokora and Jenas are similar they are both 50% of a very decent player. They do some things very well and others piss poor.

Maybe they could mate or be surgically reconstructed into one very good player.

I've got bolts and some Gaffer tape.

Gomez - Great Game
Zokora - Moments of sublime skill followed by new levels of utter incompetence.
Modric - Not so great first half followed by a all action second half. Still think he will be a gem.
J2S - Very ordinary on this display.
Bale - The nuts
Gunter - Only 19 my arse. Looks like a seasoned pro.
Ledders and Woody - A+ top of the class (what else would you expect)
JJ - Good, bad, good, bad, good, bad, good, bad.
Bentley - Very nice link up play and control. Some great crosses with noone to nod them goalwards!
Bent - Great effort. Won loads in the air but no runners taking a gamble meant that the efforts were wasted. Superb poachers goal.

I have to say that although we gained a point I am a tad disappointed. Bent won plenty in the air and it all seemed wasted as noone was prepared to gamble and make a run. I would be well pissed off in his position if I were the loane strike and was putting in so much effort to win the ball in the air against one of the tightest defences in Europe and had naff all support. I recognise the need to be careful against the opposition breaking against us but if we don't press the defenders when balls are won in the air the defenders then have plenty of time and space to start another attack! I think Bent has been blinding regardless of the lack of support and has looke lively despite the lack of chances. He never seems to complain and just gets on with it. I hope that he continues to have a good run in the team despite new signings.
Well done Spurs!

Bent suddenly has started heading the ball, which is a step forward.

Next step is to head it to one of his own players.

Think you're missing the point with Zokora. The midfield looked much more solid him there. We conceded two against 'Boro, two against Sunderland, and only a single goal from a Bent mistake against Chelsea's finest. I reckon you can put a lot of that down to Zokora's energy and coverage in midfield. Thought he (or Gomes) was our best player in the first half. That's my opinion anyway.

JGM,

Agree with most you say.

I thought Gunter did alright though - seemed to cope with most threats that come down his side. Well, he never looked out of his depth. Good cover for when Mr Huton's back!

Zokora has had a few moment of class getting out of tight marked situations and then preceeded to fuck it all up with a woeful pass that a blind man with no legs could do better! All in all he is bloody awful. The first thing you've got to be able to do in this game is pass the friggin ball at which he is woefully incompetant!

Over all I spose we should be glad of a point away from home. Our away form has been shocking so this is some good news.

I want to know the rationale of taking Gunter off he's a right back dont you know ? ) Bring Hudd on and then put Jenas at right back.. why not just swap Jenas for Huddlestone and leave things as was... Today is the 1st time this season we have started with a back of players playing in their natural position.......I think this in it self is significant.

My view is Huddelstone should play as 1st choice when fit along side a-another... Zakora nd Jenas should be know mmore than squad players.. Play them in the Carling cup....

I see where you're coming from to a point Billy Nick but can you be sure that the reason we only conceded one today was because he wasn't in our defence. I don't dislike Zokora as I believe that he never gives less that 100% but we just need more than he has to offer. In my 35 yrs being a Spurs supporter I really do struggle to think of a player that was any worse than him in the paqssing department. It is astonishing that he can fluff a five yard pass without any real pressure! Once or twice is forgivable but time and time again is quite simply poo!

I was pleased to see Modric move up the field in the last 30 mins, he looked a hell of a lot better than when he was stuck in the centre circle making 5 yard passes. Maybe we would be better employing him as the attacking midfielder to support Bent/Pav where he can penetrate more. He also seems to enjoy his football more when getting into the last third.

Some of you are just blinkered. Horses for courses Ramos said. Zokora played his role perfectly today. He wriggled his way out of tight positions when good money would have been on the more skilled opposition to get it off him. Credit is definitely due to Didier - destroying when he needed to, and thankfully playing short passes to those that can distribute better than he can. Just a couple of times when through his own good work he was in great positions to plant a perfect pass, shame that this part of his game still needs working on. Personally, I believe Ramos is going to get the best out of him. To anyone that doesn't agree, you are a round door handle!

Other points:
1. Terry is a cheating fouling dirty thug. I know its obvious but just needed to be said.
2. Ramos' lineup and substitutions given what was available were spot on.
3. we need to learn from set piece mistakes. men on the line is one obvious start.
4. Jenas also played a very good disciplined role for the team at the expence of a more attacking glory getting role further up front.
5. Discipline was shown throughout the match. Everyone had a job, and for the most part they stuck to it.

Bar the result, this is exactly what I wanted to watch.

PS I was going to ask why was Bentley taking all the set pieces, then Baler took the sting away straight into the wall.

Big improvement and, passing aside, zokora did well against a world class midfield (as did Jenas but not expecting any credit here for him) but he was pretty culpable for their goal though by just standing still as belletti attacked the ball.

On corluka hopefully just playing because his replacements only just signed and he's happy to play for his employers cause unlike berbacock!
