Joe Hart

Friday, 13 June 08, 04:47 AM · Comments (47)

Joe Hart's name is well and truly in the frame. Not like a piece of art like you might secretly covet for your back bedroom room say like an original Cézanne. No, his name's framed largely to hide what 10cc called 'a nasty stain that's lyin' there.'

The usual rubbish has been touted and spouted of course. Robinson plus 'some Waterstones vouchers, a BMX, an Action Man Helicopter and £4 million nicker in a Noel Edmond's Multicoloured Swap Shop type deal. Just on this. When did one of these swapsies ever happen? Less Noel Edmonds and more of Cheggers when he was on 18 bottles of Night Nurse a day.

Hart. Undoubtedly a talent, but then they all are until there's a foul up or two and then the universal cheers become deafening jeers and suddenly it's 'Orf With His Head!' Or rather the Away Lot singing 'England's Number Three, England's Number Three.' Who in their right mind would volunteer?

And maybe it would Hart's making if he were able by some means to swerve the poisoned England chalice? Maybe if he just did what he does at a club level he could come on nicely. And perhaps Robbo could do the same. Tottenham fans have groaned and rightly so at some of his infamous flaps, but nothing crucifies quicker than a duff game in the media glare of an International game.

Is Robinson really done for? A bit too similar to asking is Berba leaving? The answer appears too dependent upon the fax machine confirming an agreeable figure for both parties. The case against Robinson is relatively watertight. And for me all his indiscretions were minor compared to the revelation live on late night TV that he couldn't do penalties. Falling over to your left five times in a row is Gross Misconduct in my book and an immeadiate, sackable offence.

The last point I'll make on this is that there is a growing (largely in the dark, fed on silage) contingent that believe that the addition of a new goalkeeper and literally any goalkeeper will be a Pot Noodle Panacea for the defensive malaise at The Lane. They're wrong. And the decision over what to either do with Robinson or whether to do without him could well springboard or in part scupper our forthcoming season.

Either way, the barrel rolls have to stop and the reputation we desire has to be established.

Ooh, you'll wait a long time for me
Ooh, you'll wait a long time

Ooh, you'll wait a long time for me
Ooh, you'll wait a long time

I think we should keep Robbo, other than last season he has been blinding. The press and fans that come on here and say he should go are the things that mess his confidence. Get it back and he is one of the best in the premier league. Even last season ppl forget too quick the save he made in the dyin seconds of the cup final. Get a good keeping coach on him and englaands number 1 england englands number 1 will ring round out theatre of dreams COYS!!!!

i dont think we can risk it to be honest... sticking with robinson = risk, signing joe hart regardless of this seasons form as our number 1 is also a big risk... we need quality and experience.

Surely he'll be a number two for now. I'd be happy to have him onboard, but not if he's more than £8m. We need a 1st choice keeper aswell though. Any news on Gomes? Or is it just a case of an old story repeating itself in the press?

no what we need is an experienced goalkeepeer like gomez or possibly coupet, not some dribbler just out of the pram. oh and he is also £10m a very very heft fee for his services rather spend £9m on gomez
oh by the way modric was world class against germany

I cant believe im the only one who's noticed the problem. When did Robbo's form start to dip? when we sold who? Thats right, Michael Carrick. Same Centre backs, in fact weve got 2 top class ones and dawson who isnt far behind but Robbo's form dipped when we sold Carrick. Im not suggesting that he misses his mate and cant play without him because its clearly not that. He needs a good holding midfielder to sit in front of his centre backs and help defend and i know everyone says this but it is the reason. look at all the top sides, they all have a good holding player, hense y the dont concede like we do! Bring in a holding midfielder that isnt Zokora and Robbo will be okay again as will the centre backs

Robinson has been let down by the club as well. No goal keeping coach for a large chunk of last season and it has to be said that the previous coach did not exactly prove to be any good.
Robbo will get his confidence back given the chance and a good coach can teach hit to command the area. But a capable keeper to make him work is just as important and Hart may fit the bill.
I was very sad (and surprised) to see Cerny go as I felt he had earn't a longer stay at the Lane. The defense also has to take a large share of the blame.

I love Robbo, I really do. As much as he caused my friends and I no end of grief last season and to some extent the season before.

His reaction saves are second-to-none and before the confidence crisis his decision making was to be applauded. His rapport with the fans has always been great.

BUT

When you look at the top class keepers in the premiership alone you just know that he isn't in the same league as them. Watching Van Der Sar for Holland was like buying a shitbox Fiesta for your first car only to watch the prick down the road zoom by in his TVR spraying you with mud in the process.

The guy is getting on now but he is just GOOD. Really good. Robinson, in comparison, is not. Really...not...

I genuinely think that Joe, had the support of defensively minded team last year and that worked in his favour. We will however will be up and down the pitch more often than Kerry Katona checks into rehab and the lad could be left exposed.

The case for the defense is that Man City weren't that awe-inspiring in the centre of the park and the lad did stop a lot of chances, so he must be all right.

While there isn't a need for another unpolished diamond at the lane, I feel the club is going about this the right way as if just 2/3 of all the young players we buy to turn out to be great players that will be the way we push into the top 4, not through a massive outlay of cash, as the only thing that will bring will be players who value money more than football ala Lucas Neil. I know that most player are greedy but there still a breed that just love playing and these are people that THFC need to have to progress.

Harry's right, what keeper would want to come to Spurs, knowing that if the make one mistake everyones going to be on their back, straight away.
For Robbo, I blame the England fans. His from started to dip when he missed Nevilles back pass, and it bobbled over his foot.
How was Robbo ment to stop that? he was in mid swing, being closed down, he didn't have a chance.
Yet England cant just admit they lose to Croatia because theyr'e shit, they had to find a reason that they lost, and the blame fell on Robbo.
If I was Ramos, I would give Robbo the summer off, let him get his head right, and then play him, and stand by him.
Before the FA cup final it was showing David James, and how he put all his mistaked behind him and got his confidence back by going to see a sports psychologist. Thats what we need to do with Robbo! James has had the best season of his career!
COYS!

David James made some stupid mistakes as well last

Robbo is crap and we need a foriegn keeper. English players have become crap in general they've no bottle and big heads. We let Amelia slip through our fingers. We just need a complete keeper not just a shot stopper like Robbos fat arse is.

I'm sure Ramos will have everything sorted by August and Robbo will either be warming half the bench here or flapping at numerous crosses week in week out else were.

Robinson at his best is a great shot stopper, he has never been great at catching anything, he is hopeless with crosses, he never knows when to leave his line and has no idea how to stop a penalty other than diving early to help the penalty taker. He never has been a commanding presence in the penalty area and to blame his poor form on anyone other than him when Jol and Maclaren gave him so much support is just bollocks.

If we want to be top four we need to get real and get a real keeper with experience.

How much better would we have done in the last two seasons if we had David James in goal ?

Watch the inevitable. Robbo will be sold as the club and fans have lost confidence. Whatever club are fortunate enough to snap him up will watch a once was great become great again. He isnt Richard Wright, a few mistakes and we all dumped on him, and thats what he struggled with psychologically, always second guessing his instincts. He needs to move to recover, cause you lot wont lay off his back for just a few months. He will arrive at a shiny new stadium as a player reborn. just watch.

You guys also forget Englands number one number two, Bring in Cudicini and we will be just fine

Harry - to continue your 10cc theme... I'm Not In Love with this move and it almost Makes Me Wanna Cry. Good Godley and Creme, can we not just find and sign a class keeper? C'mon Commoli. Hart is a fine prospect, but so is Alnwick. Agree with others here that Spurs need more than just a shot stopper, they need a strong character in goal -- someone vocal who will hold his defenders to account, and who will not lose confidence following an inevitable blunder.

Just watched the Italy-Romania game, and if you ever needed a reason to buy a top class keeper, you should have watched 2 fine stoppers on show. Even though he must be 60 now (well he looks it anyway) Buffon was excellent as was the Romanian Lobont. Naturally gifted keepers, and technically sound. Shot stopping, commanding on crosses, and bossing their boxes.

That's exactly the calibre of keeper we need for Dan & the Dame to bring to WHL. It's not Robbo unfortunately. Gomes or Boruc would do nicely thanks.

I like Robbo, but I don't think we can afford another "Give X one more chance" season. After the cash sunk into the team the past three seasons, it's put up or shut up time now.

When Jussi was out of contract, I would have even liked to have seen a move for him. But, I'll be happiest when Given or Octopus Gomez is between the sticks grabbing and fondling more balls than Glitter in a sauna.

For sure, perhaps I should reiterate It was the Tabloids, and the general Stigma and hype around his failures that broke his confidence. But i have full faith that the Robbo of two seasons ago will return, just not until he gets a fresh lease of life.

I don't know whether you received my email but as the auction ends tomorrow and you've not replied I thought I'd take my chance by adding a post on here. Anyone who is interested, please go to ebay.co.uk and search for "spurs pennant". 100% of the money raised is going to ME Research UK. Bidding ends on saturday 14 June at 17.00 BST. Thanks.

Pokey Robbo has been crap since the 06 World Cup. He got hyped up to no end before that tournament as being the next big thing in goalkeepers, but with everyone behind him and 100% support from a nation he showed what he really was an average mistake prone keeper. Robbo will never be a top quality keeper he doesn't have it in him. He's dodgy at the best of times. I don't care who we get in goal as long as he's not English and not young. We need a complete goalkeeper or we'll never break the top 4.

Totally agree. The 'one for the future' cobblers ought NEVER be applied to the goalie requirements of a club SO ropey at the back like us. We need to go out and poach a decent goalie who can do the task and stop mucking around. Sod England. Give'em Calamity. He can cope with the shite they'll throw at him. We need to just go out and buy Cheatski's number 2 or Big Brad The Penalty Stopper!

Good article Harry, well i really hope that we bring a decent Goalkeeper that isn't scared of going into anyone - perhaps John Terry would do - in my opinion the 'brazilian octopus' would be an excellent addition as will Hart. Robinson really needs to go, he may have been a fan favourite at one point, but to continue to have this status you have to keep pleasing the fans and even when he has a good game(which is rare), the next games he messes it up. So i hope we bring in a decent Goalkeeper and perhaps a GK coming through the ranks of any club perhaps Forster or that Viviano bloke whos been in the papers. And someone that knows how to save a penalty.
