For his myriad faults, at least he knew how to shop, even if he didn't know what he was buying.
You've got to say, 'I'm a Tottenham supporter, Goddamnit! My life needs transfers!' So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!'
So what's the latest sorry collection of non stories, then? Well, Didier Zokora fell over again. Or rather a proposed sale to Seville has fallen through.
Gareth Bale is supposedly going to Birmingham on loan. He went off the boil, but still I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
Even The Daily Mail have become bored with the Downing to Spurs sketch and are having a punt with a Villa to thwart move tale. So if we learn nothing else this window, it's that the direct opposite of swoop is thwart. Stone me.
And a West Ham supremo, who cannot be named - as I can't remember his name has come out and said they won't sell to us. Every cloud, eh?
So there you have it. A motley collection of half truths and near lies as rarely seen outside the House Of Commons.

Go and write blogs for Commoli then, PLEASE!!!
I'm not a transfer junkie so I'm not getting hysterical that we've gone 5 minutes without signing an overpriced unknown from a medium level European league, so no shouting out the window tonight for me.
Harry not making a signing
You do realize how stupid that sounds, don't you?
Classic harry I almost fell off my seat!
Don't worry HH, I really believe this is just what we need. This will be our year. We have a good squad.

I wonder if they mean Kia Joorabchian.
I think my missus is doing Mike Ashley's laundering.......... she always manages to lose half of my socks.
I on the other hand appreciated the shock to amused smile this article put on my face - well more the title and then realisation.
Try not to pull this one too much though - just like the lack of developments at WHL this too can probably become tiresome.
Our problem is that we're too used to wholesale changes window after window. I guess it's like trying to quick smoking or going to the pub as the dedicated driver.
Patience is a virtue...apparently.
TMWNN: re your recent question......
I agree that Bassong might do a job, as I did hint albeit somewhat sarcastically. I'm afraid my ideas are not new and I've posted them before. The main one is to be prepared to break the wage ceiling; we are not going to be able to compete with our direct competition within a wage structure as it stands.
Of course there's a danger of a free for all, but managed right it would give us a better chance to secure the two or three class players that might make a significant difference to our season(s). In truth the names will sell shirts, might get an extra place or two (which increases prize money at season end) as well as better cup runs etc.
Given that, we might be able to get a Huntlaar or a Schneijder and attract another strong man in the midddle of the park as well as cover at centre back.
I think the positions we need to improve are Center Forward (keep Pav let Bent go) a left footer; either fast attacking midfielder or a winger and a tough tackling middle of the park player to support and cover Palacious (or even compliment him), who can also 'point' and 'shout'.
Aditionally, I think we need to look for a Central Defender who we can build a defence around for the next 5 years. We don't need this today, but we will need it soon: King will probably play his last season this year and may be a bit part player and Woody is still liable enough to be crocked that we need a spare. I see Dawson growing but I think he'll play the supporting role in top claas pairing rather than the lead.
Beyond that I don't think we need too many new players, 3-4 tops with a eye open for a new Mike England. I think also that too many new arrivals takes too much time to gel and we need to be out of the stalls quicker this year.
The list of 'shipees' is pretty obvious and well documented now. Of those discussed, I'd keep Pav, Jenas and PSB but the rest are fine to go in my book..... Oh and I'd break the bank to secure Huntlaar.
our problem has always been, we dont score goals from midfield enough.
if we did, it would mean the opposition would have to closely watch our midfielders, and strikers , instead of just our strikers ,creating more work for them, and us having more options to create and score goals,
Well stolen off spurs odyssey..
Ballbag... This has been going round in an email for weeks, its not copyright Spurs Odius. They "stole" it too.......
Wow your name really is appropriate.
can I be the first to say this is the year we are going to finish in the top 4?
Get Lorik Canu, a left sided player and a central defender, and we'll be up and running.
Todays the day - a signing or a sale is in the air - I can feel it

Fuzzy - didnt you know it's a feckwit Bank Holiday ?....put your feet up son
I like your idea Harry but feel the strategy leaves too much to chance - i,e, what if no=-one is outside your window to hear. I suggest we all lay down in front on Levy's Merc and say nothing .... until the pub opens
My missus booked a flight for Hoddle, not news but...

HH, when has no credible news on transfers ever stopped you making stuff up in the past?
Reply to GEORGE:
We had billionaire`s before anyone had them, a great manager and an excellent squad is what will win us the league.
well Liverpool may have signed bent as they won't be signing David Silva - La Marca that great mouthpiece of Real Madrid now thinks Silva's off to Madrid. How can one team have so many attacking players - don't they know the Ardiles 'we'll score 5 but they'll score 6' scenario will happen. I can't see how any club can now compete with them - its almost depressing - whats the point of trying when we can't ever compete, I'm going to say it quietly but maybe Platini is right all this money in the game just ruins it.

Harry calm down theres a dear. No one wants to buy any of our squad and neither does anyone want to come play for us. This is how it has been for ages - and long may it continue. We need Gomes to practice his 60 yard throws and Darren to wear decent shin pads - top 4 here we come.

I saw this crap from the Mail yesterday. I like the 6th comment down though - good author....
Morning fellow disillusioned Yids.
I've a funny feeling there will be no signings made within the month of July. Everyone's sitting back watching what the 'big 4' and the crazy Spaniard's are gonna do next.
Let's not forget also, that every footballer who can tie his own laces, all by himself, automatically deigns himself fit only for a Champions League side. So there'll be a lot of players holding out for their 'Dream' irrespective of how shit they are in reality. Eventually as the transfer window starts to wind down, they'll realise they aren't on the radar of the 'Big 4', and will be ready to negotiate with other clubs more readily.
I think Spurs will only make a few alterations to the squad this year. Harry had them playing pretty well towards the end of the season, as a collective, instead of a bunch of individuals.
I just pray PSB has extracated his head from his ass and is up for proving alot of people wrong, as you don't need me to tell you how uninspiring he was since his comeback.
I also hope that a lot of people's explanation of Pav's 'exhaustion' proves to be the case, as I don't wanna see his name prefixed with 'flop' by all and sundry in the media.

Reply to Ginge1:

Reply to Finn:
Agree with most of that, especially about the wage structure.
The way to fund higher wages for a select few and keep the books balanced is to slim the squad down of mediocre players who are on decent money, and give the youngsters a chance or replace them with relatively unknown gems.
It will open up a whole can of worms regarding other senior players demanding the same amount as the big earners and in turn raising the wages of the entire club right down to the tea lady (Did Levy ever replace the one Sugar sacked?)
You need a large experienced squad to challenge, but without the distraction of Europe this season it isn't that great a problem.
Levy needs to decide quickly if he wants to go down the road of big wages for big players, one that will give us a chance to compete, but also perpetuate the greed machine. If he decides to stay on the current road, we'll quickly fall farther behind.
The game has become farcical and I'm beginning not to care.
So I go to Glastonbury for four or five days, hoping I'll come back to some news...other than Mickey J the Wet spam fan, cashing in his chips. Something Spurs have done, good or bad....and I get Bale may go to Brum on loan.... for fuck sake!!!
Harry I'll be in touch on that pic thing, once I've stopped aching. Vintage wines don't travel well.
COYS, really, come on!
We haven't even got anything to whinge about, other than we've nothing to whinge about?! I could go on? Right.

A lad who I play football with put his name on the waiting list for a season ticket at Manure in April (this year!) they are ringing him every other day trying to convince him to buy it. I do know a couple of other Utd fans who've given their tickets up. It used to be the case that people sold their seasons tickets to mates etc rather than give them up as the waiting list was so long. Times have changed and I think the bubble will burst. In my eyes now is not the time to be gambling on sky high wages (so my head says, my heart says go for it!)

I'm completely lost by these comments - and if Scum is a truely great movie which I have so far missed on seeing then I am ashamed.
I'll have it purchased immediatley and watched asap and will let you know my thoughts.
Watched a compilation program on the best goals of last season's premier league. There were some absolute belters in there including a shocking left footed 40 yard rocket into the top corner from Paul Konchesky against Wet Spam. I asked myself 'Did he ever do that for us?' but obviously realised he was/is more of a liability than an asset even with his shooting boots on.
Then comes 3 goals from our lot, 2 of which were against the scum down the road. Whatever David Bentley hasn't done right this season, his goal was magical. Audacity is something me need to put in our players water bottle more often. Then there was JJ's sublime curling finish. It's simple really. Why can't he just play like that every time we see him???
Finally the simplest of finishes, can't remember who against, but an amazing build up of 20 odd precision passes and flicks, finally finding Pav who served it on a silver platter for JD to slot home.
I'm sure there were more moments like this from Modders, Azza, a Woody header, etc but my point is, in all this furore about who's going to be available, we shouldn't forget that we've got some fine players on our books. We simply need to tuck our cap under arm, clutching our bowl and saying...LINK
By the way, I went to my barbers in Hampstead last week getting a trim in time for all this hot weather, when I noticed that the bloke sitting down the end from me was a tallish blonde man who spoke with a Rusky accent - he said not to worry because he was going to to be top scorer for Tottenham even though Fabiano is coming.

The lack of transfers is annoying, but above and beyond all that I'm annoyed with Manchester City Football Club. All of a sudden we're at least sixth in line for players (and possibly league position too).
We all know players were on ridiculous wages before but Man City have added a whole new level of ridicularity (?) to the proceedings.
Man City just feels like a big fat queue jumper, and everyone's too polite to say 'excuse me, would you mind fucking right off and waiting your turn?'

Luis Fabiano to ManU is a new one; that would surprise me. I could see Barca going after him if they sell Eto'o. LF would be dynamite in between Henry and Messi up front. I have my doubts he'd come to England, though. Huntelaar could be lured to the Mancs, but I think we have an outside chance because of the World Cup. Huntelaar's got to play to prove he should wear the number nine shirt for l'Orange instead of RVN. Would he get the minutes he needs at ManU? I figure SAF will go 4-4-2 a lot, so Huntelaar would mainly be fighting Berba for the privilege of partnering Rooney. For us, he'd be close to automatic if he's fit.
Sneijder is more of a central midfielder, a #10 type. Perfect partner for Wilson in the middle of the park, but I think there's even less chance of him coming than Huntelaar. Capel and Bastos are your classic left-footed true wide players. Cole and Young favor cutting inside to their right foot but can get the job done with the left peg when needed.
I like the idea of trying land Cole because he could switch with Modric and Lennon to give the defenders something different to contend with at various points in the match. Capel and Bastos would only be worth getting if we have a true target man who's good in the air for them to aim at. Otherwise I could see them suffering from the same problems that have plagued Bentley.
Very sad
Fortunately every cloud has a white lining though. Jermain is very good at reacting to such events very positively on the pitch.
Yeah, he had a pretty rough go of it this spring, didn't he? Foot injury just when he looked to be settling into the team and forming a productive partnership with Pav, then two deaths in the family while he's trying to rehab.
Given all that, it was nice to see him be able to get back on the pitch and look lively in his last few club appearances this season and then carry that form over into the opportunities he's had for the England team. Really rooting for him not get shackled to the bench in favor of Cap'n Keane again.
sort of players we should be going for to fill left sided spot include Bastos , Young , Maxi , Joe Cole , Drenthe and if all fails a reduced price Downing, (but for no more than 8-10 mil)
i agree Modric did a great job there and is an option for next season but would like to see someone with a Bangtidy left foot running up and down that flank or failing that give Gio a season as understudy to modric .
another midfield enforcer would be nice but what i think we really need is a central playmaker who will chip in with 5-12 goals a season (hard to find i appriciate) maybe mr marmite (jenas) can finally start to give us some consistency playing with wilson as palacios seemed to bring out the best in him .
striker wise i would like to see Huntelar (but think unlikely cos he's a tosser who's previously said he would love to play for the Scum !)
why oh why didn't we just pay 14 mil for Milito last season ???
Like to see JD as first choice in partnership with whom?
Not Pav or Bent though, I want PSB on the bench come August as well. Head still up arse probably.
Make Woody cap'n please.
Are we really waiting to sell before we purchase?
Are we that short of dough?
Three weeks until Wembley, when are the lads back for pre-season training?
Have I used too many ?'s
"Like to see JD as first choice in partnership with whom?"
In my little fantasy world, Huntelaar. In reality, with our current squad I'd pair JD with Pav and give them the majority of starts together for the first half dozen or so league games and see how they do.
This couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke.

I'd be fairly happy to see us start the season with the team that ended last season. With that glum looking scottish bloke and my welsh brethren maybe given a bit more of a go.
Also rose, bostock and parrett making the squad more.
that said keane and bentley out the door would be nice. especially keane. Mainly cos defoe has to play and he's basically a shit modric these days.

If that came off, it could open up striker targets for us. Pool isn't likely splashing big for a striker either, so that'd be two of of the CL teams we wouldn't be competing with for a targetman.

reputable source? its nice to know that we're still looking at worthy players though.
munso:
u for real?
Hope so.
Who is your source?
2 years ago BMJ (remember him ?) was saying our aim was to let in 50 goals less than the previous season for that was the season we couldn't stop letting them in. It was also the year when we couldn't stop scoring and few teams scored more than us. Berbatov, Keane and Defoe had nearly 70 goals between them.
So now that we have a decent defence all we need is to rediscover our shooting boots.
Logic suggests that to rekindle the fire we need to bring back the two players still missing from the attack of two years ago.
Steed and Berba anyone ?

I'm so disillusioned at the minute with Spurs. I realise we need little in all honesty to have an excellent starting 11, I'd say LB, LM and Striker. Though i do believe in Bale we have the answer to LB or LM and in Pavs we have a ready made partner for Defoe, so a Taiwo or Young would do me grand............. for now.

Huntelaar.
Van der Vaart a close second.
Huntelaar is not the answer (even if he were to sign).
He's an upgrade on Defoe (who isn't as good as some people think IMO).
First and foremost we need a target man, Huntelaar isn't that kind of player. He's a less bent Bent.
Defoe has looked a far better player in the games he played since his return from Pompey than those prior. He's 'one of us' and will always be held in high regard. He has to be a starter ahead of that judas cunt Keane, no questions asked.
Think it would be Young or Robben for me. With either on the left, Lennon on rght and Modders and Wilson in middle with Pavs and defoe up front, we should beat most teams............ Stoke, Wigan, Hull, Burnley, Wolves, Blackburn, Sunderland, Birmingham - Any wonder the premiership seems to be losing its appeal. That and Gordon Browns tax rate.
Reply to TMWNN:
I don't think I could disagree more. Of our current strike force, the guy who's most similar to Huntelaar is Pav. The only thing Huntelaar has in common with Defoe and Bent is that they all score goals.
He's absolutely nothing like Bent. He's nowhere near as quick and doesn't attack defenders for pace to get to the ball in behind them. His touch is miles better than Bent's, and he's much better at bringing down the long ball and holding up play. And so on...

Exactly. If you'd been paying attention you'd realise Huntelaar doesn't add much else. As I said, I'd take him over Bent and Defoe (he's a better finisher than both).
He doesn't hold up play nor bring others into the game.

I see over at Ar5ena1 there is talk about introducing a salary cap in the PL, ostensibly to give it financial stability.
Hmmmmm... I wonder if, in this instance, it might rather be because Ar5ena1 can't keep up with the big spenders. Ah, there there. Mustn't be cynical, I suppose.
But I got curious about the benefits of a salary cap. Wages capped (hypothetically) at £40,000 per week would create a more even playing field for most clubs. But wouldn't the wealthier clubs simply be able to hoover up greater numbers of modestly-waged players?
If, for example, a club had sufficient resources to wage ten new players at £40,000 per week, they'd be at an advantage over clubs that only had resources for two. So, the scales would still be tipped in favour of the Cheatskis, Manures and (now) Man Shittys of this world.
At present, the financial power to recruit new players can be compromised somewhat by a willingness to pay obscene wages to the few, thus eating into budgets. How would a salary cap provide for a fairer league, unless there were also a cap on the numbers of players a club were allowed to recruit? Such a system would be inoperable. Does anyone know how salary caps have been applied elsewhere in the world, and if they have improved the particular sport? This transfer window has thrown up some colossal figures, both in transfers and wages. I can't see much more air being pumped into the balloon before it goes bang. A controlled deflation would seem sensible and preferable.
Reply to TMWNN:
From what I've seen of him (4-5 matches per season each of the last couple seasons), I think he's an above average hold-up player when needed. Certainly much better than Bent or Defoe.
Bent is pretty much a one-trick pony. Charlton built their attack around that trick. We haven't. Huntelaar is a lot more versatile and would fit our style of play better.
Why do you think a target man is our top priority? We don't really play that direct too much.
Sounders
Sounders beat the Portland Timbers 2-1 in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
A sell out match in P-Town, Sounders quieted the home crowd with a Levesque goal 49 seconds into the game. Stephen King tallied in the 27th-minute for a 2-0 score. Sounders customary moment of shoddy defending let Keita pull a goal back in the 43rd minute. It was pretty much lock-down time after that and it ended 1-2 Sounders.
(The next bit is to let you hear some US footy team names)
Seattle is now into the quarterfinals, where they will meet MLS' Kansas City Wizards, who overcame the USL1's Minnesota Thunder on PK’s.
The MLS' Houston Dynamo won 2-0 away at the USL1's Austin Aztex. Houston faces the USL1's Charleston Battery, who beat MLS side Chivas 3-1.
D.C. United reached the last eight with a 2-0 win over the Ocean City Barons, who play in the fourth tier of U.S. football. D.C. meets the Harrisburg City Islanders. The Islanders of USL2 won 2-1 away at MLS' New England Revolution.
Another USL2 team to make the quarterfinals was the Wilmington Hammerheads, who had a 1-0 home win against MLS' Chicago Fire. Wilmington's opponent will be the USL1's Rochester Rhinos, who won on PK’s against the MLS' Columbus Crew.

I'm pretty sure player wages in the Prem are lower (as a percentage of league revenue) than in the European leagues. Capping them would seem to do little other than give ownership an even bigger slice of a very big pie.
Reply to 9__37:
Hi 9__37, interesting idea but can't see it getting much support especially with the clubs intent on dominating the league.
The richest clubs already have clever ways of dodging UK tax with players getting image rights money paid off-shore in such places as the cayman isles. All a cap would do is make them offset UK salaries with such payments.
Football as an industry is fairly unique at the top level, I can't see a downturn myself. There will be a plateau effect in terms of subscription fees and match tickets for a few years but the clubs & sky have a captive audience who in reality have no choice but to pay up.
Next thing they will try and market will be the internet & streams. Lots of revenue being missed there

The Theory in Gridiron: The NFL's cap is a hard cap, and teams have to stay below this number. The cap number is calculated as a percentage of the league's revenues. Teams are limited to 55 players, both active and practice squad.
Some important points: NFL contracts aren’t guaranteed, so older, high priced players are often cut before a season starts, so their contracts don’t count against the cap. This allows a team to pick up discarded veterans for bargain prices. It also allows opportunities for talented, but untested youngsters to displace an expensive veteran.
Signing Bonuses are important, and are a way to work around the cap. If the contract is for 5 years, and the signing bonus is $5M, then that $5M is paid to the player immediately, but it counts as $1M per year against the team’s cap for the five years of the contract.
All in all, I think the NFL is pretty balanced and competitive and the cap helps this. The good players are spread around the league. A drawback is that wages are an enormous consideration in any deal. A coach has think “if I sign this hot shot quarterback, will I have to let my veteran receiver go?”
In other words, there's good and bad.

I'd suggest this sort of tactic only works if everyone brings it down. The players get less, the TV companies pay the clubs less, the TV punters pay the TV companies less, the clubs charge the supporters less, the chairmen pay themselves less, etc........
Otherwise whoever gets paid less would simply subsidise some other bigwig's pay rise.

I'd like to thank Citeh, for taking the position of having every player on the planet linked to them, instead of us.
We will sell some and buy some, but nice and quetly not with all the hype and made up stories perpetuated by the press over the last few years.
TMWNN and Longwell:
I think the key to our (or any) stikeforce is contained in the blend; who will work with who. My view is that Huntlaar's game could link with Defoe and Pav and PSB depending on who we are playing: I'll admit that's a gut feel, but it's how I see them.
Strangely the other forward that could do that is Crouch and I'd guess we are keeping a finger in the pie as well as the dyke. If we get our first choice great if not we switch to Crouch. I'd guess Huntlaar and his agent will be doing much the same holding off to see what else might come in, Citeh, ManU or even the Arse if they lose the washer's mate. Of the two I'd prefer Huntlaar but Crouchie is proven in the EPL and an awkward sod to boot, he's also able to play with Defoe.
But it's how it gels, PSB and Berbatov, Crooks and Archibald.... get the mix right and you're there.

How's this for a theory.......
1) Not long back, there were reports of an Arab buying 60% of shares in a prem club and then staying on to be an honoury chairman. Since then we have heard nothing.
2) Normally we make a good early signing (berbs, modders)(and before you say it I know we also make a a shedload of last minutes as well)...
3)We have the prem leagues most famous Manager for expressing interest in players by way of the media.........Who has been abnormally quiet of late!
Could points 2 and 3 be related to point 1????
Reply to Finn:
There aren't that many classic forward partnerships these days; none of the successful sides are playing 4-4-2.
My view is that Huntelaar would not link well with Defoe, unfortunately we're not likely to find out. I think if we're going to bring the best out of current players, we're definitely going to need someone who isn't scared to 'put himself about a bit' in the box. That's not to say I wouldn't exchange any two of our forwards for Huntelaar.
I'd like to see this next season 4-2-1-3:
------Bastos?----(?)-----Lennon
----------------Modric
-------Palacios----Palacios mkII
A&E/Bale----King----Woodgate----AH/VC
-----------------Gomes

The salary cap in the NBA is slightly different in that teams can go over the cap. If they do this they are hit with 'luxury tax' which amounts to a tax equal to the amount of the cap (eg £10m over the cap = £10m tax to pay). As such if a team is thinking of going over the tax they effectively have to keep in mind they'll pay double.
The other issue is in this economic climate a lot of teams are losing money. Teams with a chance of winning things often gamble by going over the tax. The teams who have no chance are basically shedding salaries. This is leading to very one sided trades whereby a star player from one team is traded for a bag of donuts just to get the player off the wage bill. As such the big name teams (LA Lakers and Boston Celtics) have gone from being teams with very little chance of winning things to signing one or two star players for cock all and suddenly they've won the championship (again!). You also get free agents (a bit like a bosman) and again everyone wants to play in LA, Boston, New York but nobody wants to play in Toronto or Memphis. As such the cap doesn't really work as the same teams tend to win as this is where players want to play.
I could go on (and on and on) as there are loads of other little bits of info (can you tell I love Basketball!)
The only way to make the league better / more competitive would be if the bubble bursts. Sky money drops, revenues drop etc. On top of this some rule is brought in to stop a club being subsidised (?) by a rich owner (eg City or Chavski paying wages / transfer fees that means they trade at a loss but are bailed out by outside money).
Reply to Ginge1:
There was an idea floated a while back that clubs should only be allowed to spend a percentage of what they earned on there playing staff.
i.e if the spending percentage was 50% Man Utd take in £500million from the 2008-09 season(figure made up as I cant be bothered looking for how much they make)they could only spend 250million on signing players and there wages.
Like every other idea it only works if its adopted by FIFA as otherwise the players will end up playing for whoever has the cash to pay them.
Reply to Tricky:
I don't see how that would help. The low-revenue teams will remain at a distinct disadvantage as they will still be unable to match the wage packets offered by the big clubs.
