Norwich Away Pre Match Prattle

Monday, 28 July 08, 09:11 AM · Comments (124)

Just make it a small Absinth, I'm walking home...

It's only a friendly, but what the heck.  It's televised and commutable for many, so I'm bumping it's status above a kickabout with some off duty waiters.

Predictions predictions. Well what a shocker it's Tottenham so we are looking at either eight nil to us or a desperate nil all draw, I suppose.

One banker is that Bent and Berbatov are likely to be formerly introduced to each other by our management team at some point today. It must have crossed Mitka's minded as he was Blackberrying his butler to stock up on squirrel feed, 'just who is that that big fellow who follows us everywhere?' Maybe it didn't.

What will be of interest is against a 'robust' Norwich side, it will be interesting to see who plays where and ultimately what 'type' of player is missing. A few comments filtering back from Spain decried the absence of a proper DM. That our midfield was a little bit open. Tonight will be a passable opportunity to judge for ourselves.

Coral are offering Tommy Huddlestone to score the first goal at 17/1 and some small change on this would cover the evening's refreshments.

Let's have your thoughts on team selections then!

lol Yido1. Nice postscript there. I'm going to go for what I believe our strongest line up is:

Gomes
Hutton/Gunter Woody King/Dawson Bale/Gilberto
Lennon Jenas Thudd Modric Dos Santos
Berbatov

If we play 4-4-2 then put Bent up front and sacrifice Lennon (can't cross anyway).

Also - as soon as I see Keane in a sh1tty red scouse shirt I already know I amactually going to shed a tear.

Yours,

disillusioned

Fuckin' docherty will score for Norwich, then probably do a "comedy" robbie "the cunt" Keane rolly polly celebration. Seems Coral don't want to offer a price for the Doc. Strange that.

Oh. There's only one Keano. He's manager of Sunderland and he's buying all our shit for big money.

Obviously Bale & Hutton would play, if available. Just cant wait to watch it.
Would be nice to see Bostock come on for Jenas.

I think J2S will do well in PointyShouty's old position. Can t wait to see his face on the bench mid-season when he realises the grass isnt greener. Bob I mean.

nothing scarey about that. Bent didn't much of chance last season. He was a real asset at Charlton, and could play an important role for us now that we have some midfielders that are more capable of feeding him chances.

Bent just gets on with the job. He doesn't waste energy pointing, shouting or frowning. As a true professional, he understands that it takes 33 muscles to frown and only 13 to smile*, thus saving vital calories for the real issue of winning football matches.

*Probably bullshit.

Been leaving the transfer talk to one side of late thus a lack of responses from my person on this delightful site.

That and coming home from work to see 140 comments already left can result in my ear bleeding after getting halfway through.

That aside, a bit of footy on the telly will be grand. I predict a healthy 4-0 with one fuck up from Gomes that DOESN@T result in a goal.

GUTTED massively about Keano. Will not be booing him at the Liverpool game though. Or in general....maybe.

i won't be booing him either Whitey as we're stuck with him over here in Ireland..

however i will now refrain from calling him by the affectionate names of "Robbie" or "Keano" but instead i will revert to simple "Robert" or "R. Keane"

he doesn't deserve our boos but he certainly doesn't deserve our affections..

I don't like - Gunter has been average, Gomes looks clumsy, Dawson will need plastic surgery, Norwich are trying to kick us off the park, Ledleys right knee, Dos Santos' right foot.

I was more disapointed with Modric but only because Dos Santos has been outstanding.

Bent is proving me right, long may it continue.

Gunter's been better second half, was a little shaky first half. For me Modric added class short range passing, which sounds a bit silly, but those short passes around the corner in the final third are the hardest to play and he plays them for fun.

Gilberto showed he can still do a job and I liked Lennon starting in a more central position (new role anyone?). Jenas I thought had one of his "oh, was he playing" type of nights and what can you say about Bent? Awsome - albeit against limited opponents. Only saw second half, but that was right pleasing, the way we bent them out of shape and that :)

Couldn't quite tell on the stream, but was O'Hara playing DM cover role for a lot of 2nd half? Seemed to be doing well if it was him, and interchanging with JJ (I will use affectionate affectations for him - reckon he's gonna be useful in this new free-flowing responsive midfield).

All the tricky triangles high up the pitch were very appetising indeed - with the overlapping fullbacks and that. The back line is still shaky, but if we turn into a 'goals from anywhere' team this season, i'm not sure i'll care ;)

Bent scores four goals against lower league opposition in a pre-season friendly and now he is the replacement for the departed Keane. Wow I am giddy with excitement. Behave! Bent was not worth the money we paid for him, is an England wannabe and will not be able to help us break into the top four - period. Let's have an outbreak of common sense.

All I will add is that his finishing was superb. Sure their keeper wasn't this and he sure wasn't that.. but Benty done good.

hi all,
was at the game tonight, just got home...
well what a day, the irish one f**ked off,
gutted i couldnt vent my splean at him, booo!
back to the game, modric looked great, classy
passes around the box, hardly gave the ball away, easily pushed off the ball though..
dos santos? a bit of a star, if he could do
it against the best.. bent was roundly boooed
at the start.... afraid the canary fans pissed
him off!
badger got a game! looked better than i remember him..(not the hair..)
king looked a bit lame.. gunter was good
going forward but dodgy in defence.
gomes dodgy kick early, but we have a huge
goalie who will be out on the 18yrd line
catching.... just get out of his way.. only
1 big kick up field!
formation seamed to be one up front, 4 doing
what they like, one in front of the defence.
all was far too close together.
we need a defensive midfielder, and centre back
big time.. loved seeing the spurs play where i
live, think 40% of fans were yidos.. could even
jump up and down in the main stand, yid army!

Just got back from game, and enjoyed it. I rated pretty much all of the players very highly; Dawson looked shaky at the start but then didn't have long until subbed off through injury. Bale looked great coming back - shame about the missed bicycle kick. Assou-Ekotto looked very good, as did Gilberto, Gunter and Zokora. Huddlestone was fantastic, as was O'Hara, Bent, Dos Santos, Lennon and Modric. Jenas did an alright job, and Taarabt knows how to pass now, and pass well. My man of the match would be Huddlestone - simply flawless.

Just come to my notice that Johnny Two Saints is listed as a striker on the THFC website adding more weight to the suggestion that the coaching staff may not be as upset at Pointy's departure as they are letting on.

???

Bent scores four goals and displays his finishing prowess and he gets 6.78? I dunno it just seems like half the spurs fans desperately want him to fail so they can be right about him being a waste of money. He is a good player, given a chance. I know it was only Norwich, and their keeper isn't exactly Buffon, but Bent was good, give the lad some credit. I'd have Bent over Pavlyuchenko anyday (one is proven in the premiership, the other is not.)

As for the rest of the team, they really look good. Modric was good when he was on, not quite as fit as the others tho. Gunter was handy. Lennon was effective, also looks like he has learnt to cross, good times. Dos Santos was good, but he seemed to fade out after he got kicked around a bit, can see that being a problem. Defence looked shaky, but then it was makeshift at best. Gilberto looks good going forward, but terrible defensively, looks like a chimbo clone to me (with a little more class). I like O'Haras drive, he seemed to want a part in everything. Jenas had a quiet game , but broke up their play and made a few really good tackles, new position for the lad?

Agreed! I also like how Jermain is telling all the newspapers how worried he is about us selling Keane and Berba.

I thought Bent took all 4 goals really well last night. showed good finishing and confidence, the 4th was a great nutmeg on the keeper, lets hope he can keep his confidence up because if he does i'm sure theres lots of goals in him. J2S showed that he can handle it when players like to get rough with him, I was quite impressed by some of the strength he showed in the first half when shielding the ball and of course with his control and technique, gutted he didnt score but he showed that he's in the mix for a 1st team place.. Modric, did look like he needed more fitness but that will come, liked some of his incisive passing and prompting of the play, felt he had a few chances to shoot that he turned down but i'm sure he'll be all set for Aug 16th. Gunter was great at RB, showed willing to get forward and was strong and clever when he needed to defend, its good to see that he's adequate cover for Hutton. Great to see Bale back, obviously he's trying to get his match fitness and sharpness back, he looked good going forward last night though. BREAKING NEWS...... Aaron Lennon looks like he has learnt to cross a football!! I was very pleased and quietly impressed to see him ripping Norwich apart last night, him and Gunter operated very well down the right, I would still like to see Bentley come in but if Lennon can keep on playing like last nights showing will be fantastic back up / impact sub. O'Hara looked good and its nice to see him get really stuck in. He's a bit of a dynamo and his versatility will be very useful over the season.

Anyone else think Gilberto was pony?? He has played football with Brazil over the summer but last night looked average at best. Showed one moment of quality when he controlled a throw in then flicked it over the defenders head. The rest of the game he was pants, he's a full back who doesnt track back!! CHIMBONDA MKII!!!

Dos Santos surprised me with his strength and also his commitment to tracking back and working hard for the team (i thought he would be a show pony but he clearly isn't).

Bent took his goals well especially his first and the header.

I'm fairly happy that Gardener has only gone on loan to Hull. Okay, we all know he is not good enough, but he is an honest pro and gives 100% If Ledley breaks down early on in the season and with Woody's injury history, that don't leave us a great deal more, Daws, Rocha & Zokora filling in. At least we have someone we can call back from loan in an emergency. Apart from Miera a week or so ago, I cant remember seeing us linked with another CB (I don't think that Jar Jar Binks at the Spammers was a serious link)

Another reason to boo?

Just read on White Hart Pain that Keane and Poyet are rumoured to have had a bust-up after Keane told Poyet he was a chump for turning down ManYoo.

If it were true it would erode even those vestiges of respect remaining for Keane that some fans have. How could a player do that to a club he professes to love? It's shafting, back-stabbing treachery. Credit to Poyet, though.

The truth, of course, may not be so black and white. Who knows what it is? We prefer our heroes pure and our villains putrid when, in fact, most people are varying degrees of both.

In the end, it's wiser to support principles over personalities, because personalities let you down. Principles, however, can be eroded. That's why I was interested to see how Fergie and Wenger dealt with the tapping up of Ronaldo and Adebayor respectively. Much as I'd like to see each coach humiliated (and each player), there's a principle at stake which will turn round and bite you in the bum if you ignore it for opportunistic short-term gloating.

As it is, we've had our bum bitten anyway - through Keane and through Berbatov. But, at least our Chairman has been able to negotiate from a position of moral strength - even if that morality should turn out to be only a veneer.

Apologies for the lecture. I don't mean it to be. I simply found Keane's attempts to justify his move risible, and Benitez' efforts to avoid the moral issues contemptible. Red cards to them both.

And probably a red card to me, too. Because, while I'm decrying Keane's disloyalty, I'm not-so-secretly content to see him go, as I believe superior reinforcements are coming, partly funded by his transfer.

Which kind of makes me a hypocrite. But don't follow me. Follow principles.

Principles or not, Keane going has left us in a better place, Levy openly said he had become a negative influence in the dressing room. ÂŁ20m is a great price and will more than pay for a suitable replacement.
I think tomorrow night we will know a lot more about Berba's situation at Spurs.

At the time I thought it was the poor reception of the online streaming when, at one point in the game, I heard a long, splitting noise like the sound of something cracking. But, in hindsight, I'm inclined to think it may actually have been an incidence of Berbatov breaking into a smile.

So says Robert David Keane.

And, by implication, he's saying the Spurs squad is incapable of that. And that Ramos is incapable of assembling one. Tsk.

Meanwhile, I suppose Berbatov's future to be already decided, just not announced. And the longer the club delays his sale the less time he'll have to prepare with his new club, wherever that may be.

Which is nice.
