Panic On The Streets Of N17

Tuesday, 02 September 08, 02:17 PM · Comments (136)

Gary Jacob in today's Times online says Tottenham were definately panic buying yesterday.

A £10 million bid was placed for West Ham's Carlton Cole.

And an approach (with no proposed fee disclosed) was also made for Wigan's Emile Heskey. The Heskey move amounted to nothing as Wigan were reliant upon Boro parting with Mido to faciltate the move.

It has to be questioned as to why a multi million pound PLC would get themselves in such a mess where they were scratching around in the last hours of the last day of a three month long window for... well, scraps.

There is no getting away from the fact that we had made some sensational signings this season. The imagination displayed has been admirable. Bentley is an excellent player with the potential to be a great one. Dos Santos is what I'd call very Tottenham - he will wow us. Modric and Pavlyuchenko have proved themselves to be amongst the most exciting players around internationally.

There were undoubtedly some good intentions. But what happened next?

The deal with Berbatov was clearly mismanaged from the off. Were THFC in denial? Did it really take him formally 'not being in the right frame of mind' before the ramifications of his departure dawned on the board?

My point being that I bet you anything you want that Fraizer Campbell's name was never on any wish list of Wendy's. They may have had a small effigy of him surrounded by lit candles in bl**dy Hull, but he was merely just another trinklet thrown in with the beads and mirrors that PaleAleFace threw in with the Berbatov lolly.

The Keane fiasco was in fairness a shock to everyone. The little runt had disguised his ambition to bail on us by announcing his desire to end his career at The Lane only weeks before he scuttled off to be Mr SubbedAlot in Merseyside.

So what was the Club's strategy? For all the digs about dodgy Ruskies etc, Zenit St Petersburg made on thing abundantly clear which they stuck to and that was that they wanted paying. The fee was always going to be horrendous but never in excess of €25 million. Yes, the involvement of the agents was perhaps even more parasitic than usual.

But then so what. You bite your tongue and wash your hands afterwards.

The situation this morning would have been unrecognisably improved had we offloaded the Bulgarian rat to City. If if's and and's were pots and pans there'd be no need for tinkers, eh?

However you cannot TELL a player who he has to play for.

But where we notionally had control was in the sourcing of another striker. And in that we monumentally blew it. It doesn't undo the good of the great aquisitions, but it does terrify me that an elegant attack force of Keane and Berbatov could have been part replaced by a Cole, a third rate journeyman or Heskey, a wardrobe on wheels.

This fog of dispodency will lift because I'm still in love with the old girl, but the schlep to January will require a number of our lot to really deliver and by that I mean goals.

Bent must come good. Crazy Paving must be our Torres.

How much truth is there to the Heskey and Cole rumours? I'd be pretty disgusted if we got either of them, for sure, but let's not get carried away: they were clearly going to be cheap make-weights to cover our failure to buy Arshavin, much like Frasier Campbell is.

In fact, if it wasn't for Zenit being such winkers about Arshavin, I'd think we've had one of our most successful transfer windows in a long time. Look on the bright side Harry, we got top dollar for two talented strikers who we HAD to let go, so in the circumstances I think we've come out on top.

Want-away Keane and Berbatov swapped for Bentley, Modric, Pavlyuchenko and Dos Santos. That's not bad is it?

If you look at the total in/outs for the transfer windows since Magic joined us, it has been pretty impressive. Admittedly we sold the Best Player In The Universe (registered trademark) yesterday and did not seem to bring in a direct replacement, but then we have improved every other aspect of the team.

If it turns out that we are to own Fraser as part of the deal (like the Defoe 'loan' to Pompy) for Nutkins, then I think we've done really rather well considering what 'ull wanted to pay for him.

Does anyone know the deal with FC?

I'm getting sick to death with all this nonsense. Our squad is better than it was this time last year. Fact. We lost one striker more than we thought we were going to lose. Fact. We tried for the pint sized Russian and they played hard ball so suddenly we had a hole for a third choice striker. So, we told Utd to give us one at least till January were we might be able to resurect the Smoothbum deal. I wish people would stop with all this selling club crap.

Carlton Cole has struggled find his feet at every club he has played for. That would be poor business on our behalf. If we got him for ÂŁ3.5m many wouldn't be too perturbed. Heskey is the quintessential British target man. Big, good in the air and causes problems. The problem is he cannot stay healthy.

OK apolagies for calling you stupid, just frustration of yesterday and not signing another striker, but these people in the media are making up stories I mean 10mil for Cole come on let be serious why did West Ham not accept I think Gary Jacob is just trying to undermine Spurs and make us look stupid

Im glad we did not sign in desparation the players Hesky and Cole.
Campbell I think was approapriate given the circumstances surrounding Berbatov.

Berba and Keane did not want to stay everyone knows that...however it took Levy until midnight last night to get a fair price out of Manure. By which time Campbell was the only option (for the 3rd striker position required). Not ideal I know but better than playing a midfielder up front.

All in all Spurs are Net ÂŁ7.5 million up (even before the normal ÂŁ30 million spend. so I expect us to use the cash where appropriate in Jan (early hopefully).

As a season ticket holder though I am more and more concerned by these billionaires taking over and ultimately scuppering any chance Spurs have of competing (without similar investment).

Il have to think long and hard about forking out another ÂŁ1800 (x2 tix) next season me thinks!

I don't know how true the reports that Arshavin was at the lodge yesterday are, but could it be possible he has signed a pre-contract agreement, given that ZSP said he was not moving in this transfer window, sorry but this could just be me adding 2 & 2 together and coming up with ÂŁ30.75m (without permission of course, its much more fun to lock someone in a closet so no-one else can talk to them so their is no choice but to get what you want)

So what exactly went on? Are we really saying that our professional arm failed?

I want to be generous and positive, but I can't honestly believe that this is how Levy and Ramos envisioned our squad post-transfer window.

It's commendable to weigh up the pros and cons of market dealings, and to compare ourselves with clubs even less fortunate than ourselves. And it's fair to say that our failures may be due to circumstances far beyond our control. We don't buy and sell players in a vaccuum. It's a competitive, dog-eat-dog world out there. And it's victories on the pitch that will see us ascend the league, not victories for our morale.

Carlton Cole and Emile Heskey? After we'd supposedly had sufficient cloth to dress the shining forms of Arshavin, Veloso and Villa?

Oh, yes, if there isn't already one, there definitely ought to be a line of Police hazard-tape around Spurs Lodge, forbidding entry. No doubt an official spokesperson will be present, waving away prurient interest from bystanders; 'Move along now. Nothing to see.'

No Arshavin, no Veloso, no Villa. Most certainly there's nothing to see.

I was pretty anxious and gutted last night. Think I might have been more upset about the implications that Man City are stealing our thunder as the media's "most likely to hallenge the top 4" darlings. Wish they'd find something new to talk about..?! But all in all, having slept on it, I was actually pretty proud of Levy for sticking to his guns. It's not only the money, but people will know they can't just tap up our players, and conspire to get them on the cheap. Filthy little club they've become. It's a shame to miss out on the other targets, but what do we actually know about the ins and outs of these deals really (Veloso / Arshavin etc), other than how much we deperately want them. We ain't backed by some Kamikasi Billionaire sugar daddy - so have to live in the real world and appreciate what we've got. If we mess up how we spend our money, or take too big a risk - we could do a Leeds - and in fairness to Levy, I think he's conscious not to buy for the sake of it as the dead wood (blame Comoli) has proved hard to shift. The names banded around (Cole, Heskey) concern me, but I assume that Ramos just said (no thanks, they sound sh*t) - and they never would ahve gone anywhere. FC's no risk on that front as I assume we've only paid a nominal loan fee. Ramos knows what we need, and will be pushing for a Defensive Midfielder, Left Winger, Second Striker for sure - as these were the players we were after. He's got much more power to over rule Comoli as DL's learned from last summer. Anyone calling for DL's head needs to take a step back and look at where our squad was in in April, and 4 years ago for that matter. If Keane and Berba's hearts weren't in it - that ain't his fault, surely? That aside IF everyone's fit, we've actually got quite a tasty 4-1-4-1 to play with Corluka as the holding player. Oh and I just love wathcing Johny two Saints play football, he's exactly the type of player that made me fall in love with this magnificent club of ours. COYS

i have just seen on the Daily Snails website that apparently we tried to also sign Kevin Doyle last night, but couldn't get hold of Reading on the phone.

Coppell did say it was broken and his replacement is due this week.

with reference to every other player we were linked to (Heskey, Owen, Cole etc) what a load of shite

i would put rather good money on our next striker being of a non british origin.

Snr Ramos knows the European players too well to waste cash on strikers that hold no value and go at the drop of red wine and a suck of something scottish.

He will sign us someone exciting and young!

my bet is frazier is going to become a freebie permanent deal that we loan out to hull in january and sell there in the summer!

Truth is sites like Harry's get false hopes up---always ITK stories that, for the most part, turn up empty. Treat these site with a HUGE pinch of salt. All the ITK shit is phoney. Crap like "A deal has been struck" "A medical has been scheduled" etc is always taken too literally. Harry & "ITKs"...

Couldn't agree more.

Every Spurs board today is like an audition for a Return Of The Living Dead remake.

Paralysed zombies wandering cyberspace looking for answers, someone to blame... a hug.

The ITK bashing is everywhere.

How it is that supposedly grown men are unable to cope with the fact that info a stranger gave them failed to pan out is beyond me.

But then I guess a number of these outraged consumers are also waiting for their Lottery cheque to arrive since they sent off the handling fee money to The Official National Lottery Main Prize Draw Claim Centre.... in Angola

1) Levy played 'blink' with Zenit, and lost.
2) Spurs need to bring in one of Ramos' men to replace the inept Camolli.
3) A couple of weeks ago why didn't Levy contact Real Madrid and put a "Berbatov for Robinho" idea on the table?
4) Why can't Dos Santos be the Robbie Keane replacement?
5) Campbell will surprise you....
6) When is it our turn to be bought by a group of "money no object" billionaires?

another FF?? b*llicks .. we needed a DM .. someone to allow Modric be as creative a talent that he can be ..

For all the money we made and in some cases spent this time around I feel we are not prepared to challenge for top 4 .. City, in January will buy anything that moves and its likely that can take all our targets with promises of big bucks .. (look at Robiniho and the likes of Petrov)

Everyone was excited by the reports that little old citeh were in for Berbac/nt .. but to me this is very worrying .. our chances of being top 4 have just gotten harder ladies and gentlemen ..

f/ck why did I have to watch Spurs beat Watford 4-1 in the 87 cup semi final and get excited?? I'd probably be a happier!!

There's only 121 days until we can buy again and I would honestly be shocked if the Arshavin deal is not agreed before then. We can then look back at the first half of this season and see where else we can improve in terms of personnel. In that time theres no reason why we can't have played well and got good results - after all, we still have an exciting and promosing NEW team.

Wendy has 121 days to do what he does best - coach. Then we'll let Comolli either fuck it up again or pull out a couple of gems, who knows.

This is not the greek tragedy everybody is making it out to be.

I respect Levy's position on keeping quiet about transfer activity, but today, I think we need some clarification on how our club is being run.

I think we need to calm down and look at the squad we now have and compare it to the squad we had this time last year. Ok, we've lost Berba and Keane but other than that we are in a much stronger position with genuine quality in all positions.

I know that some people will jump out their highchairs and say "But we just sold 50 goals a season etc etc" But we must look at it abjectively and then it will become clear.

we are learning as fans what to expect from our new found status amongst the elie of world football in the medias eyes, it is easy for the manyoos to win these battles, they wrote the rules and keep their club ahead of the others, can we not give our bald, bold and fearless leader time to adjust also - we are playing catch up - this relates to all aspects of the club. Levy is shrewd and i am a fan - if we have bid for cole, it would be to stop interest in one of ours/raise a price, think about it, Levy thought berbs ould be staying and when at the last minute it looked like he wasnt, he got the most money possible for him. Its Bob that has set this season back - at least berba told us he was off to sunnier climes. Leave Levy alone and give the board/bored time.

My sentiments exactly. Let's look at what we've got. I am well pleased with corluka and willing to wait and see what Pavers brings.

Good buys:

Gomes, what a fu*king save on Sanday.
Woodgate: Solid, holds the middle.
Gilberto: ???????????? What's happening there?
Hutton: Great in back and moves up. Get well soon, Jimmy.
Bentley: Needs to settle but will be worth the money
Modric and J2S: both have the flare we pay to see.
Pavers: He looked good in the Euros, can he deliver?

Good byes:

Good riddence Berbatov.
Robbie who?

We have the opportunity to be a far more balnced team now. I admitt we are unlikley to score as many goals, but we are hopfully going to plug the leaks at the other end. Not the most complete quality side in the prem but would put a majority to shame. Once Wendy has tinkered and settled, it looks to me like top 6 or 7 on paper so he just needs to walk the walk. There have been an absurd amount of changes this summer so if I'm honest, any trophies or an above 7th place will constitute a result.

Like 9.37(?) I imagine that going out and just 'getting' top players is tougher than some posting on here seem to think, especially for positions like DM & LW which seem to have fewer top drawer candidates than other positions and therefore are at a higher premium not to mention their greater propensity to expect CL action.

We may not be getting the full compliment we'd like as fast as we'd like it but I would still argue that we're generally buying a steadily increasing class of player. The fact that we're not a billionair's toy(thank god) means that our 'slower than some' pace of improvement
will result in losing the odd gem along the way; it's the nature of the beast. Backward steps are an inevitability we can handle as long as we keep moving forwards. Our last match showed what life without complete cnut & bit of a d*ckhead could be like, and that was without Corluka or Paylchvchinkylova.

It ain't all bad, what did someone once say?

The current squad and coaching staff are good enough to better last seasons performances and results(not too much to ask). However to attain champions league qualification on a regular basis (a much bigger ask)a number of things have to happen, short term Comolli has to go and the squad strengthened, long term the stadium issue needs to be resolved.Only then will we take our place in the Big6(current 4 us and newlyrichcity)and challenge for the title.Until then some realism is needed, remember it's been 20 long years since we last signed a player that everyone else wanted, the mercurial Paul Gascoigne, enraging the then and now manu manager.Chins up, COYS.

It's knowing what our relative potential is that makes us so annoyed.

what sort of wage bill is a 12 year old going to be on?

There are no plausible reasons for loaning him for 12 months before finalising a deal for nothing. We arent convinced about getting a 5m + player for nothing? At worst we sign him for nothing and sell him to Hull for a few million. No reason.

now can someone give me ONE reason why Utd and our ourselves would wait 12months to finalise a deal that costs nothing?

Coz we didn't have time to sign him last night(as with defoe to ports I believe) and so we can chuck him and his wage bill back at 'em if he doesn't impress?

Sorry that's 2 reasons.

Hope the non-angry spelling's ok.

what sort of wage bill is a 12 year old going to be on?

There are no plausible reasons for loaning him for 12 months before finalising a deal for nothing. We arent convinced about getting a 5m + player for nothing? At worst we sign him for nothing and sell him to Hull for a few...

Ok, so go to my first answer.

"We did receive offers to buy him but we didn't want to do that.

"We believe, and Alex believes, that he has a great future.

The fact is he's on loan at a great club like Tottenham, he'll get exposure in The Premier League and come back a better player and hopefully force his way into the team here.

I think we need to calm down and look at the squad we now have and compare it to the squad we had this time last year. Ok, we've...

well actually 15 premier league goals each and i reckon bent can better that, Pavs shud be able to get near it...

I very rarely comment on this site because normally the reports I read are miles clear of the mark, and the articles laughable; but it's hard not to agree here. The club's activity degenerated into farce. Levy abandoned his ethics in the face of United's paycheck, no doubt only to spend the next three months bitching about it. Comolli threw money at every sub-standard striker in the Premiership and, thankfully, failed to waste our money on any of them. Ramos bafflingly agreed the sale of Steed Malbranque with no replacement on the horizon and seems intent of playing Bentley there for no apparent reason. This entire season appears already to have become a massive joke for this club, and I'll be content just to stay up this year and clear out all three men at the top. A year ago, Bent couldn't even make the subs bench. He's now our number one striker, partnering Fraizer Campbell in Europe. I almost hope Wisla Krakow beat us, just to avoid any further embarrasment for us. Never have I been so pessimistic at the start of a season. Ramos, Comolli, Levy; please leave before you kill this wonderful club of ours, you've wounded it deeply this transfer window.

How much truth is there to the Heskey and Cole rumours? I'd be pretty disgusted if we got either of them, for sure, but let's not get carried away: they were clearly going to be cheap make-weights to cover our failure to buy Arshavin, much like Frasier Campbell is.

In fact, if it wasn't...

Why do everybody get so over hyped because of our signings Modric, Bentley, Dos Santos? Yes, they are good players if you look at them individually, but they are mickey mouses.... you can not put them on the pitch all at the same time, not in the EPL anyway. Just look at sunderland game, we were like small boys against Roy's big ugly men... Besides that, only Bentley is a proven player of these new arrivals( modric, dos santos, gunter, pav, bale, corluka they are all unproven). I bet 4/6 of these will fail or at least not be a very good player for us. I know that most of spurs fans didn't rate Tainio, Steed, Chimbonda but the fact is that they all had been regular 1st team players for many years ( not only for spurs), and dumping them all at once was a mistake. And WHY THE HELL didn't we sign two new good strikers this window?? We knew that berb and keane were gone already many weeks ago!! Why o' why....

If there is any truth in that we were trying to buy Heskey or Carlton Cole the board have no clue as to what is acceptable to the supporters. If they had brains they should now be regretting forcing Defoe out of the club. They could not buy anybody equal for the low fee they accepted. I expect him to remind us most weeks of our mistake.
They have also let go quality midfielders like Steed and Pedro Mendes but seem to value the willing but brainless much higher.
Ramos seems to be a bit Rafa ish in his team selection in that he seems to like playing people out of position.
Lets hope they come good.

Boys, boys, boys,

Whats the Mogad? (issue) (Mogadishu)

Lets take a look into the future:

Villa - Home - 3 points
Wisla Krakow - Uefa Cup - WIN
Wigan - Home - 3 points
Newcastle - Carling Cup - WIN
Portsmouth - Away - 3 points
Wisla Krakow - Uefa Cup - WIN
Hull - Home - 3 points
Stoke - Away - 3 points
Bolton - Home - 3 points
Arsenal - Away - 1 point

We are about to go on an 11 game unbeaten streak in all competitions (for this season)
November is even easier with only Liverpool a possibility of spanners in the work - and there are quite a few spanners at Anfield - one of them sits in the toolbox - I mean on the Bench - he used to play football and his name is Robbie.

Top 3 come News Years Day?

Why is it that Arsenal and Man U can say 'no' to players attempting to engineer a transfer and we cant. The first sniff of interest and they're sold on for profit and we're left eternally waiting for the next transfer window to spend the money.

Comolli has to go. We have gone backwards since he arrived, in 2006 we were on the edge on of the top 4 now we mid table. Replacing Carrick with Zokora (and claiming at the time he was better then Carrick!!!) was followed by undermining BMJ, the man who turned is around.

As for Utd hope we completely stuff them at the Lane, I can't believe that we let them push us around...I almost prefer Chelski to win the league then them (and I normally take a anyone bar Arsenal/Chelski stand).

Come on Spurs, us against the world!

The fact is that we continually lose our best players to 'top 4' clubs. Sheringham, Carrick, Campbell, Keane and now Berbatov (and prob King if he had remained fit) all gone, mostly for massive profit. We cannot hope to compete with the top four if we continue to sell our best players to them.

I have to say I am getting a bit bored with the constant negativity about everything Spurs do. Ramos is rebuilding and reshaping the entire squad and this takes some time. Ignoring Berb and Keane (which we could do sod all about!) our squad in all other departments is an unbelievable improvement on where it was before Ramos came in!

I for one think we are building a great team and despite it being dissappointing to lsoe players as good as Berb and Keane what can you do if they say they want to leave???

As for Campbell i think he could turn out to be a terrific player and if he doesn;t we get rid of him so a win-win situaiton there! I have seen a lot of people slating Pav and Campbell and they haven't even played a bloody game yet! Give them a chance at least!

I can't wait for the Villa game to see how we are shaping up and am confident that with the squad we have we can build upon last season!

common consensus is that Pekhart is similar to Pav, and Rudolph was trying to offer Levy 25 mill plus the 7 mill rated Campbell Levy said give me the money instead, 31 mill and i'll take Campbell on loan for a season

Pointless comparison old chum. The Pekhart deal is good for him and gives him his first full season at a higher level. Campbell was obviously a last-minute thing, but bear in mind he played (and did a job) for Hull in the Championship last season. Therefore he's a season ahead of Pekhart and will be fine at #3 on our striking 'depth chart'.

Overall I would rate this summer a 7 out of 10 on the transfer front. The only stain is the Berbatov thing (no-one saw Keano leaving and I think we handled that excellently). Because there was no last-minute arrival everyone seems to have overlooked that Corluka and Pavlyuchenko immediately make us a better team, better than the one that just got a great draw with Chelsea. Now all this transfer window nonsense is over the whole team will pull together - just wait until we run out against Villa... you'll feel better then :D :D :D

partly I agree with you and yes, I really need a lot of vitamin D... ;) . Anyway, in my opinion corluka can be a good one ( in the defense yes, but I'm a little bit sceptic about that DM holding role.... hopefully I'm wrong!), but one good season is not enough to prove it. By the way, do you remember, last season ManCity lost to chelski 6-0 away and 1-8 at home to Boro ( and Corluka featured in both of them. Their goal difference, season 2007/2008, was -8 (45 - 53). I wouldn't call that excellent defence....
I admit, Bale is a great kid, but good performances in a couple of games doesn't mean anything yet.
Dos Santos = striker? But can / will he score 20+ goals / season? IMO we need a clinical finisher who can do that. And what if Pav or Bent or both of them gets injured?

I don't want to sound too depressive, but I had soooo big hopes for this season :?

well you're right on Citys thrashings, but having watched Corluka i reckon he's class & versatile. Agree Bale but he looks up to it to me. GDS is a deep or wide striker, dunno if he can. Bent i think can, but lets not forget Berk & Keunto only did 15 premier league goals each... Keunto never did 20 ever... (& oh what fun to see him flailing at the bin dippers), Benty did more than 15 at Charlton as a lone striker with a pretty crap midfield behind him... Pav from what ive seen can handle tight situations like the EPL & looks to have everything. We've still got gaps that need filling but i am optimistic, theres many ways to percieve something, some of those will make u sad and some happy mate. Dont forget always look on the bright side of life... :P :D :)

Being A life long spurs fan, im glad too see money well spent this summer. i think the signings we made this year are excellent addiditions to the squad,

but my point is i think this club needs to be calm and take things one step at a time. if you look at man utd and ar5ena1 they have had managers for 10-20 years we have had 20 odd manager since then, why cant levy just put some faith behind the man in charge and argee we wont get top 4 if we change managers every year !
