Popular Alan Partridge impressionist and some time football supremo Gareth Southgate has come out guns a blazin' by his standards, wildly suggesting Tottenham aren't a top four side.
"There is a certain level – if he is going to leave – that he should go to. I want the best for him "
Boro's CEO Keith Lamb said, “We again reiterate that no senior players will be leaving this football club during January. Now if you'll excuse me, I've just had a call from the manager of Pizza Hut and Mido appears to have used a bicycle lock to chain himself to their lunchtime buffet wagon"
Tottenham did pitch in a megabid the wrong end of £15 million and it was rejected.
For me, if Stewart Downing was the answer then what was the question?
Where can we buy an overpriced player that isn't the finished article? The griping and niggling that has gone on since Bentley's arrival is testament to how painful this signing night have proved to be. And to think they called us a nation of shopkeepers.
Now I'm not suggesting that the moans and groans of some our less supportive number be the guiding force in our purchasing activities, but if we are to lash out this class of money, we cannot do so and just keep adding to a collection of 'Bentleys'.
We can only buy what is out there and what is prepared to come. But the monies paid for the likes of Modric and Pavlyuchenko represented great value. Much like the the fee being touted for Podolski. These players are aspirational.
Downing was a narrow escape.
What's the answer on the left? I suggest him.

true as always 'arry. n'zogbia, dindane and shorey are the new kids on the block according to my sources.
The answer is clear: swap Bentley for Pedersen.
I think downing would be the answer on the left - although bentlys form/lennons inability to cross is a problem on the right also - i wonder will harry play JJ there?
nzogbia - not good enough - up and down performer
dindane - to be honest i have no idea how he will adapt
shorey - average left back
i think harry should look to loan out bale - get his confidence back - he is a good player - just struggling for form / still young.
also i have looked at posts criticising zokora in recent weeks - i think the prob we have with zokora is he is the only man in our centre midfield who is defense minded / im not saying im his biggest fan - but over the last few weeks he has actually impressed me.
this transfer window will be strange - i think arry will bring in distinctly average players, just to bolster the squad, in a bid to avoid the drop.
its a cathc 22 i would prefer not to bring someone in just for the sake of it - prefer to bring in a few loans just to ask as squad players until the right players come on the market.
in a very positive note my 3rd season in football manager 09 i have managed to secure a top 4 finish with spurs. (finishing 3rd)
08/09 - 8th
09/10 - 6th
10/11 - 3rd
steady progression - for anybody interested my champions league qualification team was;
gomes
corluka/hutton
felipe/woodgate
king/ignasevic
bale/sakho
modric/arshavin
veloso/kompany
martinez/diego
downing/giovanni dos santos
rossi
bojan / necid
rossi scored 37 goals in 34 games, with bojan getting 20 goals in 35 games and gomes named european keeper of the year for 2nd season in a row.....
Downing's a sh*te player. I wouldn't spend more than 4mil on him nevermind 15mil.
Let Boro have him. Downing will jump ship as soon as they're relegated this season. Hopefully he can jump ship and be sh*t somewhere else. I'd prefer to see someone like Nzogbia, Martin Petrov or Pedersen on the left to be honest.
This Dindane chap doesn't look like anything special if you ask me...
Happy New Year all. Just got back from the Christmas jollies and still have to read through all the latest but Bentley seems to be getting a rough ride at the moment doesn't he? The shame is that he could be a contender and not just a poseur if he only pulled his finger out. Unfortunately thats not something that can be drilled into him on the training pitch, but only in the harsher climes of his psyche. This is the malaise of the modern footballer - buy and then write off a ferrari at will without a seconds thought, but chase down the opposition - come off it!
O'Hara is what we want mentally in all our players - never say die - fight for the shirt, fight for your own pride - strive for success. My question is, does Downing want this move for the extra money or the free membership to a certain dodgy nightclub and the nightlife it promises? It must seem like heaven in comparison to 'clubs' in 'Boro'.
Is Downing really the quality that we need and want? Even with money being now object, there aren't that many available and on the market. Now I do like Poldi (as he's charmingly known in the fatherland) and could be a better bet for the money, but we need instant understanding to get us out of the doldrums and he will take a little time to gel into the country and club.
Personally even if we fail to strengthen the left, we've got enough to get us through the year with Appiah (hopefully) showing his talent and desire and getting on the books. Who knows, he might even strike up a formidable centre midfield partnership with our Ivorian.
As for Gareth Southgate - we'll he's just sore that he never played for a decent side.
Frankly i think its a smoke screen. Think about it, not to long it was all Bellamy and then suddenly Defoe was back, now i say this, for the 1st time Harry has money and he knows it, Downing for me is the decoy to bring in Englands regular left mid and a reunion with the coach that made him and this player is none other then Joe Cole who at 15mil need i say the fee offered for Downing the same 15mil we spent on Defoe and the same 15mil rumoured to be offered for Bellamy. Spurs are chasing left sided mids and nothing wrong with a right footed left mid that is the countries first choice and who could leave Chelsea for 15mil.
im a Boro fan and will tell you Spuds fans once again - you dont know what your talking about. Downing is the answer to your problems but your such a horrible club we will sell him to anyone but you. Stewy deserves better than moving from a midtable team built on stability to a midtable team built on no principles - if he is going to move it will be to a Champions Leagye contender.
Nzogbia, Petrov and Pederson all better than Downing? What do they put in the water down there?
Reply to Daniel:
Champagne. What do they put in the water up there...it affects not just your thinking, but your spelling, or is that how you pronounce Champions Leagye?!
Downing has proved absolutely nothing so far, other than he can occasionally hit a decent shot. It must be very frustrating for you to have such limited resources that we can pick your best players even if we're not convinced they'd improve us.
Glory glory.
Downing is a disapointment.
you my friend don't even reach that catergory. your teams greatest season is when you lost 2 cup finals and got relgated.
move on, we have.

Reply to Daniel:
I can see why, watching a team so devoid of footballing talent, that you may see Downing as Boro's answer to Messi, a bit like Dame Edna being Robinson Crusoe's answer to Pamela Anderson.
But, please if you're going to post on a Tottenham blog, can you please refrain from sounding like Stewart Downing's jilted wife?
Middlesborough will get relegated and we will sign Downing, for a fraction of the prices being quoted at the moment, as a squad player and Harry will maximise his potential.
And like Swindon, Oldham, and Ipswich no-one will miss Middlesborough.
Looking forward to seeing Heskey do a job for the next 12 months. Benayoun anyone?
Id like to throw Arango into the ring.
27 years old, mature player (knows what he´s doing). Plays with a team that has a rotating door with regards to transfers so he plays with a different squad almost every season. flash the cash to mallorca and they´ll throw their mothers in. Oh and by the way he scores goals a plenty. BHIYC

Keep hearing about Joe Cole being unsure and unhappy about his future at the club? Im sure he would love the chance to join up with Harry again and also most of his family are yidos do you rekon weve got any chance of this? he would play LM for his england chances as well....I would love it

I'd eat my hat. He'd never come to us. If he was leaving Man City would be a more likely destination, what with them printing their own money and all that.
does arouna kone play on the left wing? because he is an absolute beast and a personal favourite.
pacy, strong and with a good delivery and shot.
Seen this in the Metro about Defoe and Hovis
"The striker, dressed like a cross between a 1930s Bolton fan and an extra from a Hovis advert, was so authentic in his sepia-tinted fashion sense when he raised his hands above his head you half expected to see a loaf of wholegrain where the 'Spurs Forever' scarf should have been."

Downing is a great example of an English "talent" that is overpriced, just like David Bentley, purely because he is English.
Spurs have always had a strong English contingent and while this is admirable, I'm a bit bored of failed expectations and false dawns and I think us paying inflated prices for homegrown players is one of the main reasons we always seem to do badly in the transfer market. If an English player can be picked up for good value then great but why pay over the odds when we could hop over to the continent and poach some real talent?
Diego Capel is one player we've been linked with who would be a far better opition than Downing, and probably cost the same if not less. Incidentally, I still hope we haven't seen the last of Gio - he was quality at Barca and could be a real star for us given the chance.
As for the third ugliest man to ever grace a football pitch, (after Crouchy and Peter Beardsley of course) he can jog on into the championship with the most mundaine team in the premiership and the worst fan-base in England. We'll get Downing for peanuts in the summer and prove to Boro how much of a mediocre squad player he really is.
Reply to HenryPercy:
What's the answer on the left? I suggest him.
He's right footed Harry...
Just dont get why, 3 managers on, we are still looking at Downing. He has a left foot and is English. That is like finding a leprachaun under a unicorns hoof to some people and that is the only reason he is being tagged at £15m. Is he the only left sided midfielder in the world? No. Is he the best left sided midfielder in the world? No. Is he a decent player whose attributes are such a rarity in English football that league and England managers a like put him on a pedestal regardless of his mediocre acheivements? Yes.
If we have £15m to spend on a left sided midfield player spend it on Podolski (can play as striker if need be), Capel, Arango, Babel, Cole or Kranjar even. NOT DOWNING!
Incidentally is Romeo Castelan a left sided winger? He'd be a good buy from Hamburg, although he is yet to find the net this season.
cole please - part ex with bent extra please
So according to that reputable horse shit peddler The Daily Shmail, we could(aren't) be about to make an audacious(fabricated) move for Joe Cole. Harry would like to(in the same way he'd love to tee up a three ball with a couple of supermodels) hook up with Cole again.
My right nut says it wont happen. I think the fact they talk at all is impressive.
Reply to Poshspur:
apologies for not reading previous posts about Cole!
Reply to Poshspur:
Well said. We've got a better chance of signing Kevin Pieterson.
It is time for us to stop being held to ransom over average players, Bent and Bentley (even if he returns to his Blackburn form ) were never worth anything like what we paid for them and nor is Downing worth 15 mill.
Let Arry find a couple of gems and then we can all enjoy watching a relegated Boro struggle to get 8 or 9 mill for wonder boy in the summer.
As for Bentley, considering he's the one off form who is meant to be so brilliant, let's see him play so well on the left that he gives Arry a problem. A portuguese wide man who plays for some thick northerners and can't drive Italian cars seems to be brilliant on the left or the right.
Come on David show us what your made of.
Reply to WillyLight:
i take your points however the players listed,
podolski - not a natural left winger, he is a better striker.
capel - does not want to join
babel - liverpool wont sell - has not lived up to potential
kranjar - portsmouth are not selling any more players
arango - unconvinced
cole - yes if available - that is a question mark nad the other question mark is if he would want to join.
yes i agree downing is overpriced, i think he a good player but 15 mill is quite high, but that is the way of it these days - keane not worth 20 - bently not worth 15 mill.
i think downing would be good purchase - he will provide balance - has not hit his peak yet - but that said he is unavailable - until the end of the season - if midd stay up they will sell - if they go down they will sell on cheap.
Reply to thfcwaynethfc:
Fair points on all those above. I was brainstorming players really who may actually be worth spending that kind of money.
The problem i have with downing is that if he is that good, he should be shining at Middlesbrough as their best (perhaps second best player behind Tuncay who is underated and absolutely mustard) most consistent player. But he isnt. He has flashes of excellence. He can run at players and can cross a ball and is left footed. I just think that for the money, there are others who acan do the same. Daniel De Ridder at Wigan, who is the same age as SD, ticks those boxes and although he's only just signed for Wigan, at about 6.5m he would be a snip and would balance the side. This is only for example of course.
what number is JD gonna wear anyone?
Reply to DingDongDes:
has he been sorted yet?
still no official announcement on the website, and he has not got a player profile yet.
can we please buy someone who is LEFT FOOTED!!
Joe Cole - great player but right footed
Babel - as above
Nani - as above
at least Downing has a left foot......but he aint up to the mark for me.
When JOH came on v Burnley we had balance, i say get J2S to play there, even Baler with JOH playing left back (Prefer BAE though)

I saw the mention of Dindane at the top of the page and having never heard of him tried Wikipedia. His entry would appear to have been edited by a 5 year old with a chip on his shoulder about a certain Mr. Drogba....
"Dindane is a really good player he is better than Didier Drogba because his the only one who doesnt wait for the ball to come to him he goes to the ball unlike Didier Drogba. Drogba plays for Chelsea where he is a substitute for Anelka the French International."
I'm still not sure he would be the answer though.
Weren't we strongly linked with Joe Cole until Mourinho started playing him on a more regular basis a couple of seasons back? He's got to be worth a punt, right footed as he may be.

It's all well and good saying you don't want "foreigners [we] don't have a clue about" but you have to then provide some realistic alternative suggestions. It's not just a wages problem. If Joe Cole didn't want to play for Spurs a few years ago when we were nearly qualifying for the Champions League and looking very promising, why on earth would he come to us now when we are struggling to stay in the division?! Cole is a pipedream; a story likely completely made up by a tabliod journalist with no other leads and a deadline to make. We won't sign him just like we were never going to sign the plethora of over-qualified talent we've been linked with over the years including Ronaldinho, Eto'o and Beckham.
At the risk of sounding pessimistic, Cole is a world-class player who expects and deserves Champions League football and who has a chance of winning league titles and major trophies with Chelsea. We can't necesarily even promise to be in Europe next season (Come on the Derby).
Someone like Diego Capel is a proven talent, has been playing in the first team for Sevilla for a while despite only being 20 and has played against some of the best full-backs in the world. Just because you've never heard of him doesn't mean he wouldn't be class. I bet you'd never heard of Dimitar Berbatov before he came to the lane...
Reply to Yid4Life87:
downing is the realistic alternative....
where did i say i don't want foreigners...?
why would capel come to tottenham....when he's at sevilla...riding high in the primera liga...?
i don't think we'd get joe cole....i said i'd do everything i could....to get joe cole...
Reply to Yid4Life87:
Not the happiest read but quite correct.
Joe Cole I'd love to see with us and those doing the maths that...
He isn't guaranteed a start at Second Hand Fridge + Redschnapps likes him = we night sign him are off beam.
The issue of money - or overpriced Englishmen -is key and the sooner we return to the same continental stores where we picked up Berbatov, Modric etc... the sooner we'll get another taste of quality and value.
English players are only sold by English cornershops, employing the tradditional methods of selling covenience goods (knows the League, familiar with the culture, speaky da lingo etc) at inflated prices.
G Gra Gaaa.. ahhhh Granville!
How many scouts does Spurs employ? Just because we haven't heard of/don't know much about foreign players, doesn't mean they wouldn't be excellent for us, fit into the EPL - though it's frustrating when it takes time.
That said, some proven EPL don't remain consistently good (Bentley) and foreign players can take their time but become amazing (Berbatov).
Can only trust 'arry knows what he's doing.
I do hope there's much more and something exciting to come before Feb 2nd. COYS!!!

A year or so ago, Royston Drenthe was the next big thing. He was stunning for Holland in Euro U21's, possibly the player of the tournament. He plays left side of midfield and can cover as left back.
There has been recent talk of him being loaned out as Schuster wasn't his biggest fan. Since Ramos has taken over there, he is back in favour again. He may be someone that we should try to get in till the end of the season.
Failing that, bring back Tony Galvin.

i'll go with whoever harry wants to brings in....downing,hunt,bellamy,johnny f,surprise....?
i'm going to stick up for downing too...as we despeately need a left winger....overpriced...forsure....but any recognised player is gonna cost spurs £15m these days...
Disappointing news. G Johnson has signed new deal with pompey. Unambitious mug. Thought he was shit anyway.

I got the impression from somewhere recently that Spurs / Harry would love to sign Capel.
I think the problem is that Seville still despise the very ground we walk on, after the whole Ramos-poaching farce / debacle / extravaganza.

Pederson isn't rated by Blackburn fans, he had one good season a while back and has been gash since. Bearing in mind they thought Bentley was class this should worry you!
Petrov has suffered his second major injury in 3 years and is basically f*cked
Nzogbia - don't know that many toon fans but the couple I spoke to said "you can have him he's sh1t!"
To be fair most Boro fans are happy for us to have DOwning.
I think Steven Hunt at no more than £5m or £6m is worth a punt, not as technically good but a real battler.

hunt it is then ginge...get yourself down to the madjeski then and thrash out a deal.....
what ever happened to that Adu fella? He was a lefty, and there was talk of him being a spurs fan even when he was a 10 year old american prodigy. Is he a bit ropey now?

oh FFS..
I see Jose Bosingwa is plotting to stop Ronaldo.
"To stop Cristiano is not easy but at Chelsea there are people who know him well, including the manager - we know what to do stop him."
The cynic in me might assume that refers to cutting off his brake-fluid.

to be fair.. Zokora had him in his pocket so it really shouldn't be that hard..

He's selling fitted kitchens from a rounabout outside Harpenden.

If we do sign Joe Cole I'll eat my words and skip around the block with glee but I honestly don't think it's even worth considering for the reasons aforementioned. Capel is more realistic but admittedly not likely - I was merely giving an example of a player that would be a much better foreign alternative.
What do we think of N'Zogbia then? Personally I don't see the appeal but along with Aston Vanilla and the Scum we seem to be in the running for him. I haven't seen this fella do anything out of the ordinary but he satisfies the desire for premiership pedigree and will almost certainly be cheaper than downing.
For anyone with access, Harry was supposed to be on Sky Sports News this afternoon talking about Stephen Appiah and transfers generally. Don't know if he's been on yet.

My spelling is abysmal. The cause? Bad schooling? No. Sobriety. Can't even spell roundabout. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I thought the way you handled the word "abysmal" though was exceptional

i am a big joe cole fan...in fact i'd go as far to say he is one of englands best players...but i doubt we will be signing him....but with harry you never know....
according to the media Nzogbia has said he is a gooner...so if harry won't bring on ghaly because the crowd don't want him to...i'd imagine he won't be signing...but with harry you never know....
i've mentioned many threads ago i'd have anyone with a half decent left foot to help out BAE,bale and JOH.....
also said judging by the media and what harry has said our window targets are most likely....
appiah
downing
defoe
surprise......?
still looks that way at the mo....

I'd heard he was running his own catering firm. "A bit of Adu"
Wocka wocka wocka
Jermain Defoe press conference on SSN just now..
it seems part of the criteria of being a Tottenham player these days that every answer to a question begins with.. yes you've guessed it..
"Yeah, definitely, obviously..."
He'll fit right in..
although hopefully that's all he inherits from Benty..
Reply to TheSchoolboy:
much Adu about nothing really..
shame on me for that..

Forget Joe Cole. He is another one without a natural position. He isn't a winger, he isn't a striker and he isn't a midfield player. We've made that mistake with Bentley. Anyway with the current weakness at left back (taxi fior Mr Bale), we need a player on the left who can do a defensive job when needed. I hate that little bleeder Hunt but I think he'd be a great signing in the short term. Reminiscent of Mickey Thomas at Man U.
Reply to Bimmi:
alright one more.
imagine the headlines if he got sent off.
AGG ADU
lol, as long as it saves us from one less "XXXXX earns his spurs" headline.
First post. Top site Harry.
Sure I'd take Capel. But we couldn't get him when Ramos was here, and I would imagine it would be even more difficult now. Ramos will prolly try to get him at Real in the near future.
Cole. Doesn't he play on the right/middle?
Why not McGeady? He plays on the left, has some skill/craftiness on the ball, can cross, and shows some hustle and grit, (which has been lacking on the left side since Steed left). Plus he's got to be a lot cheaper than 15 Mil.
Reply to Another New Coach:
he is an attacking midfielder...and a bloody good one.....play anywhere you want...
...not that i want to argue about it mind...
hunt seems to be popular.....we'll see what harry does soonish....
Reply to mackspurs:
Unfortunately Adu is all hype, he's just not that good. He's more of an attacking center mid option.
He barely gets playing time for his club, and he can't even dominate in the international games against weak CONCACAF (he will play solid for 5 mins and disappear for the other 85).
I'd of course like to see Cole, but I doubt he'd make the switch.
Hunt is a nice option, because he brings the effort every game.
Why don't we just play Modric out on the left? Wouldn't that hide him from the DMs and allow him more time on the ball? They would be giving up something defensively playing him wide, but aren't we already doing that with Bentley/Lennon playing on the left?
Apparently Strachan and McGeady don't get along, and the brass at Celtic Park might be willing to listen. I personally think McGeady might be better than anything else bandied about on here.
If we're gonna spend any money at the Boro, then Adam Johnson is the man to get. £6 -m would do the trick. Alternatively, their steak & kidney pies are top notch.
Once again congrats to harry....best spurs blog in the world
Now for my 6 cents worth
1. Downing overpriced.......7 million at tops
2. Capel...I wish but with the history between us and Seville highly unlikely
3. McGeady....do we need another midget?? and so easy to look good in scottish football though has been consistent for Ireland though on right flank mostly
4. Joe Cole....right footed, again too dear and not going to happen between us and the blue scum
5. Stepen Hunt....another midget but would add definite bite, ask anyone(Peter Cech) who has run into him, excellent crosser and 100% effort whenever he plays.....
I think Hunt is a more than viable option, cheaper than most and if Reading can be persuaded to let him go I could see him becoming the new Tony Galvin at WHL.
