Poyet Outright Favourite To Manage Toon

Sunday, 07 September 08, 08:06 AM · Comments (56)

Add to bet basketGustavo Poyet 10/11 3 5/6 11/8 7/4 11/8 5/6 5/4 3 23/5 66/67

The cause for concern here is not the tumbling price but the lack of comment from Poyet himself. The last erie silences that came from The Lane were shortly before Keane fled to Liverpool and the rat crawled beneath Flushface's blanket.

The train wreck that is Newcastle United is still smouldering. Ashley's a card. The multichinnaire was on a bender in New York the night Keegan negotiations were falling apart. He allegedly slurred, "We've had a tiff with Keegan" to one reveller. His mind was clearly focused elsewhere as he continued to gallantly plough on through $200,000's plus worth of lash that night. Keegan, as you know, subsequently walked.

The likelihood of anyone in their right mind taking the job at St James is remote.  Keegan to come back it is then. The existance of Wise actually means that this is a poisoned chalice held by a poisoned dwarf. It's the Wise link that has the bookies backing Gus of course. They know how unpalatable the prospect of working with Wise would be , so the fact that these two have worked successfully before is the linchpin.

Bottom line? Statement please, Poyet.

And this is good...http://www.oleole.com/blogs/the-darkside-of-the-ball

Agree HH, Poyet should come out and say he's not interested, although it is the Tottenham way to keep quiet until a move has been sealed.
What are your thoughts on Campbell "hinting" that he can't wait to get some experience ready for next season with Rudolph and the Rat.
I for 1, was willing to give the lad a chance, but coming out with things like that before he's even played a game for us, not good.

He'd be mental to take that job. If Ashley sells the club he'll be out on his ear. I reckon he probably doesn't even need to entertain the idea.

One thing i would say is that "sources" have said we won't give them permission to speak to him. Well we've heard that before. If they bung Levy a tenner he'll bury his principles no probs

I remeber a few months ago Gus being tipped as Old Red Noses new assistant- something he came out quickly and put to bed. This time he hasn't been so quick off the mark.

I'd hate to lose Poyet. He's vital to the character within the club. If we lose him then it would be another big blow. Maybe Sheringham as the new no 2?

If it ever did happen... Which i can't see? Then Sheringham is a great shout as a No2 Mike, he is future management material also imo.

It's not gonna happen... The Geordie fans have already got it in for Wise, so i can't see him (DW) getting in his pal Poyet? It would be a PR disaster of massive proportions! I understand what you are saying Harry, about Poyet commenting on this... But the truth is he already said how happy he is at the Club, when Maunre were linked? If he had to comment on every bit of speculation he would go mad! Mark my words he is going nowhere.

As SpursDude mentioned, I am also concerned by Campbell's comments regarding looking forward to his united return.
Problem is, I thought we had turned over a new leaf with the Robbie & Berba saga in only keeping players commited to the clubs cause.
Now as a result of the last minute transfer scramble we have a loan player who already has his mind on Man united. Switched one United wantaway for another.
The rumours that Fergie practically ordered Campbell to take the spurs loan move makes it even more concerning.
I say keep him on the bench unless required and give Pav & Bent time (it may well take a while) to build up an understanding.

Very good point about committed players only, who should be at the Club, hopefully this is only a short term problem, which is swiftly resolved come January.

Let him play in the stiffs for the season, I don't want him sent back to OT "a better player".

Cheryl Cole to take over at Newcastle. Cheryl & Ashley MkII. A match made in heaven.

I have a sneaking suspicion that a mate of Wise's will take over, but not our Gus. Zola, Gianfranco that is; not Budd.

Now as a result of the last minute...

1.) Hertspur, Pav is cup tied. We can't just leave Frasier C. on the bench, he needs to be in the mix and build a relationship with Bent as well.

2.) The papers say ashley will sell the club and Keegan might come back, that's what the Barcode fans want. I think it possible that Gus would take the chance to be Manager if a new owner come in, but I doubt he would go up there under Ashley or a second fiddle.

3.) If he does go, Wendy had better take some English classes. The Manuel the waiter image is not good for Spurs from a PR stand point or on the pitch.

I don't think we should assume Citeh are nailed on for a place in the top 6, not this year anyway. Certainly if the Cartoons get taken over they'd need about 15 players to make the top half and so I'm not overly worried.
The problem will come down the line especially with our wage structure if teams will offer double the ÂŁ60k max they'd get from us we could be left behind.

1. Gus needs to know that the management/board/we value him. He knows he's onto a good thing at Spurs, and from his last statement when linked with the Manure No.2 job, he stated this position. Now whether its an improved contract, or whether a word in private - Gus should be made to feel there is no other place to be. I for one, see him as eventual successor to Ramos - a long way in the future I hope. But lets not kid ourselves, staring with 11th and 1 cup in the first part season, and (hopefully) the champions league by the 2nd/3rd season and more cups, will have people clamouring for Juande's signature as the new boss of their club. The fragile thread that holds us all together is some strange belief that we can work wonders with this board-management-squad-and just enough ÂŁÂŁÂŁ's and wins to keep it glued together. The moment the ÂŁ's don't seem enough, or we don't win enough, or the faith in the board-management-squad starts to waver - thats the end of any team/optimism. At every opportunity this has to be reinforced and words from Gus would help of course, unless he's actually feeling undervalued?

2. When you're young, you tend not to know when to keep your trap shut. This comes with maturity and being aware who your audience is, If he was naive enough to think that he was just addressing ManUre fans, then FC was mistaken - how ever much he tries on the pitch.

Interviewer: "Fraizer, how do you think the Spurs fans are taking to you? Is that a bit of red on your shirt?"
FC: "Yes. Blud"

3. Ultimately the most sensitive souls are we the fans. No news is good news? Possibly, but rarely so for us YIDS. We worry if there is a lack of any sign that everything is well. The lack of news of key signatures, the lack of any word re-iterating that they love Spurs - a possible player, an existing player, a manager, Doris the tea lady! We need to know or else our worries will come to the fore again.

Really looking forward to the footie kicking off again for us tomorrow week. Hopefully a home win against Villa, followed by another home win against Krakow on Thursday and, fingers crossed, a hat-trick of home wins against Pompey on Sunday (at least I think its Pompey).

Is it really possible that Poyet will leave? How could he countenance moving on so soon, and leaving the project at Spurs half-cocked?

He and Ramos both quit clubs for Spurs. I don't know if we had permission to talk to Poyet. I assume Sevilla would have said 'no', had we asked for permission to speak to Ramos. So we did it anyway.

Anyone who changes sides once can change sides again. I'm too long in the tooth to believe it can't happen, but still too sentimental to hope it won't. I'd regret him leaving, as I suppose him to be a nucleus of energy.

Correct me if I'm wrong. As far as I understand it, THFC were not required to get permission to speak to Ramos, as he was in the last year of his contract.

Yes, the whole affair was all a bit shnidey (mainly in the way Jol was treated), but we did't actually break the rules.

That bit is something made up by surrey united 'fans' to call us hypocrites and therefore feel better about 'their' farway club.

I didn't know that, frontwheel.

In a funny sort of way, I feel less 'complicit by association' in the recruitment of Ramos. I know the episode remains one of our yuckiest - especially the treatment of Jol - but, if we observed proper respect for the rules and regs, then we're legally in the clear.

None of us can put himself in Poyet's head, but Toon seems a tinder-box ready to ignite. A new owner may sweep away the administration, but the burden of history and expectation will remain.

I'm sure the club reads this blog and other sites. It seems a logical inference to make, as valuable insight can be gained into what issues are significant to fans, and which need responding to. The internet is a powerful tool.

So, if you're reading this, Gus, do us the honour of staying and assisting in taking us to the top four. We like you. And your work here is not yet done.

Legalities aside, he'd be absolutely barking mad to take that job.

He'd go from being practically adulated at the lane to being hated up in the toon.

I don't actually mind the barcodes, they love their footie (blah, blah...) and they keep on even though they've won fuck all since before colour tv came out.

They deserve something better than that wanker Wise getting his mates in.

It's also a shame that Gus is his mate, but I was taught years ago that you can't tell your mates who to choose as their other mates.

Part of me still worries that he hasn't publicly distanced himself, like he did when Rudolf wanted him as his number two.

Hopefully he just doesn't feel he needs to give credence to the whole thing.

Hello Harry

Been an avid reader for a while now and finally decided to join in the banter.

Regarding Poyet from the Beeb: Everton boss David Moyes and former Juventus coach Didier Deschamps are among the names being considered, BBC 5 Live's Jonathan Legard understands.

But Legard believes a link-up between Wise and another former Chelsea team-mate, Gus Poyet - currently assistant manager at Tottenham and the bookmakers' early favourite for the job - is not on the cards.

Lets hope so as old Gus has the potential to be a legg end!

P.S this is definitely the best Spurs blog on the web & the one with the best wit. Keep up the good work.

Good post mate, I agree we are perennial victims, how ironic we are called the Yids!

I think you're right tho' Gus would be mad to go to Newcastle, either he's working with the crazy gang or he'll be out the door when India or Dubai or some other rich third world despot decides that their multi million dollar investment needs a Sven or a Jose to make them cosy at night.

I'd really like to believe that he actually does have the badge next to his heart the way he did when he played.

Hello Harry

Been an avid reader for a while now and finally decided to join in the banter.

Regarding Poyet from the Beeb: Everton boss David Moyes and former Juventus coach Didier Deschamps are among the names being considered, BBC 5 Live's Jonathan Legard...

Praise will get you everywhere. Cheers and welcome. ;)

Would it be unkind of me to point out that in the 'clean sweep' at Toon that Pictionary has managed to survive the cull?

Unbelieveble. That biy is like sh*t on a blanket when it comes to saving his own skin.
