Scores On The Doors... & Highlights

Sunday, 31 August 08, 09:46 AM · Comments (112)

A credible draw. Whilst Chelsea moved the ball around with greater assurance the bottom line is Tottenham played just well enough to earn a point. The lack of options up front is telling and this combined with some pretty mediocre passing left us as a rather numb threat for most of the game.

Gomes 8  ♥ A really commanding intelligent performance. Man Of The Match. HERE

Woodgate 7.9 • Another Boy's Own showing. Captain material.

Bale 6.5 • Some diabolical strikes and hedidn't get upfield enough.

Gunter 7.4 • Curious subbing. Really solid stuff hope he's not injured.

King 7.5 • Solid with some useful through balls. Looked whacked towards the close.

Zokora  6.7 • Great show in the first half. No pigeon scaring and no falling over.

Jenas 5 • Failed to make an impact. Ran his socks off but didn't produce anything.

Modric 5 • Lacked initiative. Hesitant and invisible. Not good at all.

Bentley 6.5 • Good deliveries & excellent workrate. But achieved little.

Bent 6.6 • The goal was identicle to many he scored preseason. HERE. Needs a partner.

Dos Santos5.5 • Snuffed out by good marking and poor passes.

O'Hara 6.6 • Came on and got stuck in.

Huddlestone 6.7 • Beefed up our options and should've replaced Modric at half time.

Lennon 6 • Didn't rock anyone's world.

I agree Modric grew as the game went on, and we should not expect instant results, just because of the price tag... It will take him time to adjust to pace of the PL, but in the end class tells, and he well come good! Keep the faith... COYS

Were you watching the same game Harry boy? Bale was great and Modric grew in stature as it went on, understandably in only 3rd start and a packed midfield. Negative garbage like that doesn't help anyone.

I think Bale will need a few games to get match fit.

Gomes is fab.

Bent did OK and took the goal well despite a poor first touch and he was not well supported today but he is still a million miles behind PSB Le Sulk and Defoe.

If we wanna get serious we need better than him.

Men on the line? Come on Wendy that's cubs stuff.
Agree with Gomes score thought he looked commanding and I didn't have palputations (spelling?) every time a cross came in (like last year) he caught or punched & everything. Zokora made a difference, I do think this shows that if we play a balanced team with players playing in their right positions we look a better side.
I did think Bentley was poor, Modric grew into the game. I think he's at his best with inventive players running off him, we were a bit static going forward at times but I think this is due to the opposition and confidence.

Good performance, at least we are getting harder to beat! Woodgate and King were superb, and Gomez was commanding (got a keeper that can catch now...woohoo!). Thought Modric was decent, zokora had his moments but the Hudd should be playing there, allowing Modric to damage teams further upfield. Jenas is a luxury and can't control the ball or pass 10 yards! Bentley was lively with some decent delivery. Bent absolutely cannot play on his own (as if we didn't know that!). Lennon still infuriates by going past people for fun then shooting or crossing into row z!!!

Good performance though, and we are off the mark!!!

bit harsh on bale, i thought he had a good game especially in the 2nd half, got forward well and nearly got a winner with a break from our half. zokora scares me, he doesn't look in control of himself let alone the ball and has sudden flashes of thinking he's got skill. got stuck in well though. what a difference gomes is to flapping, indecisive robbo.

Bale hit at least two balls into Chelsea shins not including the free kick. I got that from watching the game.

My sincerest apologies for omitting the Santos score I shall endeavour to rectify the situation at once. I can only pray it's ommission didn't significantly detract from your overall viewing pleasure.

I thought we played well considering the lads confidence wouldve been low, remember we were playing one of the best teams in Europe.
Bale done well, so did Gunter, thought modrics movement was good especialy second half, Bent needs the ball played into the space behind deffenders to run onto it, to on his head, as we have no one beyond him to get flick ons.
was shrewd putting JJ at right back as it shored us up there.
Gomez was great today, the lads gotta get used to the fact this goalie can throw the ball 80 yards and be ready to receive it quickly.
all in all im happy with the way they played, fair play to em.

now lets build on this and march onwards to the Villa game by making a couple more good signings before 2moro midnight. The areas we need to improve on are obvious, and if the club can't see them then they need shooting!!! King and Woodgate are world class when they play together, but there has to be back up there for when one of them doesn't (corluka will do very nicely...please let it happen!!) DM - Diarra would be awesome, can't see Pompey selling him though, all paper bollocks as usual! This Veluso chap, I've never seen or heard of him so I can't jump on the bandwagon, but he can't be worse than what we have there!!!
ST - definitely need one more, a small nippy one would be nice, i like the little and large, its always worked in england. Anybody wish we'd kept Defoe???

In a word no. He's gash, slowest small forward there is and a great finisher as long as the keeper doesn't stand still while Defoe blasts it straight down the middle as hard as he can.

Gomes looked really confident was good to see. IMO we should of had all 3 points today, if only the linesman (assistant referee) was competent in his job, because joe cole was definately offside when essien struck against the bar for us to concede the rsulting corner. So should of been 1 0 to the spurs. good performance today though much better defensively

I too don't agree with the Modric assessment. As soon as he got support with Thudd next to him, he was able to find a lot of space and was the sole reason we dominated from the 60th to the 85th minute.

Did Jenas complete any forward passes today (not counting sideways balls)?

How good was it to see Leds turn up for a second game eh? :) - Him 'n Woody look like they're starting to develop a decent understanding. The young Welshies were lookin' very promising too. (I'm now partially hoping Corluka is just gonna be a cartilage donor - would so much prefer to have a settled back four - especially the CBs. Gomez seems like he'd launch himself about no matter what's front of him, but can't help think it'd benefit him too)

Thought the Chudd put his boot in quiet adroitly at points - turning the ball over and making use of it in a way that Zok really (reallyreallyreallyreally) can't. With speed around think he can still do a job there.

Mod - well, he plays the low-percentage defence-splitting passes - so can't blame him that they didn't really come off first-half etc. Good to have someone up the park who's looking to do it tho - and think his ball retention etc will improve. His movement off ball is all looking good :)

All in all, a good point, and a big step in the right direction.

Harry, I respectfully disagree with one of your ratings..

And I can't believe I'm about to type this.. but I actually thought Zokora was our best player! 8O I know, I'm gobsmacked! 8O He looked comfortable in his natural DM position, and was keeping Essien quiet whilst throwing himself about rather well. Some big tackles to break up Chav attacks. Surely, this is why JJ (shite again) was moved to RB instead of Zok when Gunter came off, as Zok was actually have a big influence on the game from midfield.

Modric, I agree was very poor indeed. Sure, he hasn't adapted to Prem pace, but he's supposed to have a deft touch. Instead I saw him pass to nobody in particular several times! Hope he was just "off" today.

Bentley's delivery was awfull today. He must pick up his game.

Also agree with "munso" that "our problem was obvious in that 1st half... Bent must have flicked on 5 headers from longish balls to...nobody!" Clearly this strategy would require a strike partner to be effective, so why were they playing this way? Was that really the best tactic? Had JR asked them to do this? I hope not.

On a positive note - I thought King & Woody marshalled the back line well most of the time, Gomes was almost caught out a couple times by Lampard but used his reach to recover well, and Gunter aquitted himself well.

Hopefully, we can push on now without the istraction of the window looming! COYS!!! :P

I thought the team did well. Zokora, at times, was vying for my MOTM. Then he'd do something that, in another age, would merit him being tarred and feathered. Ramos has faith in him, so he'll definitely turn into a player sometime between now and when the Mayan calendar and his contract (and possibly the world) ends in 2012.

I did feel that Gomes was lucky not to be sent off for persistent cheating. Because (correct me if I'm wrong) aren't goalkeepers prohibited from catching the ball? I noticed that, barring one occasion, he regularly caught it when it was hoisted toward him, which is surely illegal. Unless the rules have changed since Robinson left.

I really expected we'd bounce up from the floor of two defeats and win this game. Considering those occasions when we looked like we might score a second goal, I couldn't but spit venom for Berbatov, whose absence effectively rendered victory unlikely. But it's wrong to put all the evils of disappointment onto the shoulders of one man. So maybe I should include the Chairman (and his hankering for the best possible monetary deal, and its hindrance to the timely recruitment of new playing-staff), too.

Modric isn't suited to being a minder in the PL, but he'll make a great artist. Once a proper DM is installed, Modric will use the pitches like canvases, rather than stages for crowd control. Then the midfield will become the 'Modfield'.

Is it me, or is Bentley carrying just a fraction too much weight? I thought his defensive work was improved today, but both he and Hudd could show greater urgency when tracking back. As attack-minded players, it's probably not in their nature, but it can be learned as a skill.

But no complaints. It was a good performance against a current top four team.

Indeed, it is nice not having to worry about how the keeper will react when a crossed ball comes in. Gomes will use his long arms to pluck it away whenever possible (which earned him a head-butt from Gunter today!). Also like how he rarely hoofs the ball out, preferring to throw it (sometimes half the length of the pitch!) to a player in a white shirt. A HUGE improvement over Paul, who had lost the plot.

One last comment on Zokora - I recall he just signed a new deal with us, so perhaps he wanted to repay the club's faith by putting in a solid performance! If he keeps it up, I won't even be dissapinted if we don't sign another DM. Too much to ask?

Gomes, Woodgate and Zok were all solid today. Zok showed exactly what we had been missing in the middle of the park, ok a few ropey passes but his tackling and interceptions were vital today.

I would have give Woodgate MOTM he was awesome closely followed by Gomes who looks our best signing!

Modric was poor first half but thats mainly because we didn't get going forward at all, I thought he looked very decent second half tho especially when Jenus cleared off out his way and went to right back!!!

For one horrible moment I thought we were going to put our best midfielder back at right back when thudd came on. I cant stand people who slate Zok, we all know he's not the best player in the world but if we don't sign a CDM he's the best we have in that area and vital to the balance of the team!

I too heard Bent's slip-up re: Pav's injury. Could it be one of those "injuries" that come up when you don't want to travel for an international because you've got too much to do to relocate your family to another country? Let's hope. :|

He's probab'y just a bit thick! 'Yeah definately' is the stock answer to most questions from footballers!
One of my Citeh mates rang me straight after the Citeh game. He said Corluka stayed on the pitch after the game (all the other players went in) and started clapping the fans and threw his shirt into em. He said he looked 'sad' (?) and he reckoned that'll be his last game for em and rang me to tell me he reckoned we'd bagged him.
Not excactly ITK but he said he's never done it before!

Granted we played better, walk before you can run, baby steps and all that but seriously - lets get a grip on this title challenge.

Does anyone know how many hours left before any possible deal with Russia/Spain/Italy/Argentina/Brazil can be done? I know England and Germany close tomorrow, so perhaps we can meet up with Berba at Oktoberfest in a few weeks. He owes me a drink after all his feckin shennanigans.

The first two games of this season I watched via online streaming. Just me and the lap-top. Today I went to the pub and, as often happens, wife came along, too.

Later, while promenading post-match together to a certain shop in Lordship Lane in pursuit of victuals, wife remarked to me how nice it was to be watching football again - since I'd been watching it on my own hitherto, it being impracticable to snuggle up together in front of the lap-top. And also dumb.

She summed up her satisfaction by observing that online streaming, while delightful and useful, is no substitute for the real thing - that is, watching football in a pub.

I permitted a moment's pause before pointing out the irony of her sentiments.

i appreciate that Gus. Just don't want any of us to get comfortable with mediocre. We stopped them from playing their game which was the first part of the plan (great 8/10 for that) but the winning the game abit nd getting more gilt edge chances - lets face it they pretty much nullified our attacking game as well. By all means lets build on this 'result' but lets stay alert.

I'm usually more glass half full than most on here, but if we're supposed to treat success and failure with the same contempt, this doesn't mean we have to treat a draw otherwise. I liked Scolaris attitude best when he effectively said 'so what'.

Very happy with a well deserved point today, even if I am down to the knuckles after biting fingernails in last 10 mins.

Lots of positives....

Gomes - Totally commanding performance.
Woody - Seems as though he would die for the cause, great block throwing himself in front of Fat Franks shot from about 8 yards out.
Ledley - New grease on ball bearings today.
Modric - Tireless performance
Zokora - Better today, looked more comfortable as DM, even if caught out a couple of times. Loved the turn away from Deco, who's world class?
Bent - Worked really hard on his own, somewhat isolated, but did what he was paid to do when the chance came along.
Subs - all made a difference when they came on.

Good piece. Ramos' 'pursuit of Roman Pavlyuchenko is inspired.'

I'm curious why Henry Winter thinks the pursuit is inspired. Why do you think?

I like the player, although I'd like him even more if he were as technically gifted as Berbatov.

What I imagine he'll bring is pace and courage. I see him as a real live-wire, crackling with electricity; and, like electricity, he can be unpredictable. But he's a force to be channelled, and his boyish energy could prove a handful for defences.

I too was calling out for Thud to replace Modders at half time Harry. It's funny but I've seen a couple of reports on todays match(one from a chelski fan) which includes comments to the effect that Modric looks a good player. I thought he looked like he didn't really know what was going on, especially during the first half. I found myself thinking similarly during Euro 2008 as pundits and journalists extolled his virtues to my bewilderment.

Bent had a decent game aside from the goal I thought; won a fair number of headers which he duly flicked on to an empty space. Looking forward to seeing him with a partner. Go on the Bent.

Still not entirely sure why Bentley is worth 17 mil. Hopefully I'll learn.

I'm starting to understand why we bought Gomez.

Good to see a right-back at right back.

Good to see this cursor moving quicker than Lennon. :D

Let's hope Hutton gets fit during the break and that we get some momentum going v Villa.

Modric is undoubtedly a very very good player but I am equally very very concerned at how 'off the beat' he was today. Early doors and all that though.

Bentley I instinctively like. this is largely down to his press conference quotes and the subliminal effect his hair is having on me.

I'm serious. There is something about a Bryl Creemed short back and sides that says he's paying attention and no slacker.
