Max Bygraves Time

Tuesday, 12 August 08, 05:09 AM · Comments (203)

The deadline for this deal was apparently set at midnight last night. Don't ask me by whom, I am merely a humble vessel passing on such valueless, erm, invaluable infornation.

Cesar Sanchez of Zaragoza is the boy.

Rumoured to be the missing great great grandfather of Rumplestiltskin he is aged 36.

An ex Real Madridista with Champions League experience Sanchez will make a refreshing change in that as a Premiership number two he won't be some poor guy suddenly thrust into the limelight should he be called upon.

The vulagrities of money, then. The fee is likely to be undisclosed as the financial thrust of this move centres around the salary of the Spanish Sticksmith. Tottenham were said by Heraldo newspaper yesterday to be 'assisting Zaragoza with their wage bill'  by taking him on a deal whereby they only had to continue pay of 40% of the goalies wages. Levy, you old cove.

The source of this story is Mrs Edith Carmichael, 72. Using only an upturned bucket, her tweaked NHS hearing aid and a home made periscope, she risked life, limb and Levy to bring you this breaking news.

Cuellar is not all that! trust me! after watching Rangers and the SPL alot last season I can tell you that at ÂŁ8m Villa have paid over the odds.

Its very very very easy to look good in the SPL! As proven by our win over Celtic, the best team the league had to offer, beaten by a spurs side who played the entire game in 3rd gear!

Welcome Sanchez, now where is Corluka???

The news on Corluka is that, although we agreed the fee, he signed the contract etc. City didn't file their paperwork with the Premier League.
We sent paperwork through, but without their confirmation there's no deal to argue over.

I still think we'll get him with an increased bid though.

Harry, you know a thing or two about football, don't you. So tell me, apart from having a comprehensive knowledge of tactics and player-development, is it essential for a coach to be expert in swooping, capturing and snapping up?

I ask because, whenever players are recruited, the coach has invariably 'swooped' for them; or 'captured' them; or 'snapped them up'. Occasionally they've been 'landed', like a fish.

Are there coaching badges avaliable in these skills? Personally, I'd like to become proficient in swooping, but generally being able to snap up more effectively would come in useful.

"City's future is not in jeopardy. In the short term its business as usual. We don't rely on Dr Thaksin's money" etc etc.....
I know loads of City fans and they all think they're in the sh1t!
Don't know how this will effect the chance of us getting Corluka but the goings on at City seem very strange. Not sure we can afford to wait around to see if we can get him as we look a bit short at the back, can you imagine if Ledders and Woody get injured we'd be looking at Dawson and Zokora or Thud! very worrying.

Are we really in for Nene? Is there anyone else who wishes to announce that Tottenham Hotspur have expressed an interest in him? Is everybody Spartacus?

Look forward to Sanchez being among the ranks. Seems an economical but decent recruitment. Only video-compo I watched of him on YouTube seemed rather edited. As if he saved the first and then let in the secondary shot. That's marketing, I suppose.

I still hope Smoothbum comes. The more protracted this becomes, however, the more concerned I am at his physical condition for the challenges ahead. Following right on the Euros, he commenced Zenit's campaign. Will he have enough energy for the medical?

Should he come, there'll be a bundle to be made this year on shirt-sales. Pick your star-name and your number. All good stuff, when you reflect that merchandise has to be factored into end-of-year profits. Even those iddly-piddly key-rings add up.

So, come on, Daniel. It's not often that Chairmen become legends. Become one. Now.

It's my opinion that Ramos has decided that strikers should have 1 job, put the ball in the net. It's up to the midfielders to provide the opportunities for this to happen. Last season we relied too much on K&B to provide their own goals, while the midfielders just watched. Now I feel that Ramos has taken some of the creative responsibility away from the strikers and given it mostly to the midfield. this means the strikers can push up a little more and remain in a threatening position rather than dropping deep to receive the ball. Which begs the question...... Does Berbatov fit in our system? Or is the replacement of Arshavin + ÂŁ10m decent business....? Answers on a postcard.

If Bent is going to be our main striker this season then dont you think that we need a similar type player to replace him?
Its no good the midfield becoming used to the movement and style of play of one striker then having to change it when he needs to be replaced.
Bents game is all about playing on the last mans shoulder, running the channels and getting into the space behind and getting on the end of crosses with his head and his feet. I feel that by pushing someone like AA up top that we may become 1 dimensional as most of the balls will have to be into feet due to AA's height.

jamiespurs, the Thaksingate is beyond football, it's a diplomatic incident. I've always been surprised at how Sh1tty fans were eager to seize on his gains, despite the questionable means he is alleged to have used obtaining them. Add to that the allegations of human rights abuses, the guilt is spread by association.

The affair is a torrid humiliation for Sh1tty supporters, but it's a potential embarrassment for the Premier League and a pea under the mattress of our government.

I have sympathy for Corluka, who seems, by some accounts, to genuinely want to come to Spurs, irrespective of the political goings-on. I can only imagine his mind is even more made up to leave now. Whether he'll be permitted to or not we'll have to wait and see.

Either way, I assume we've seen the starting eleven for the Boro match. I'm genuinely excited about this new season and I can't help feeling that the players will breathe a collective sigh of relief if Berbatov goes. Yes, I'm guessing; and yes, the rumours may be BS; but I doubt it. We all want to see his future resolved, and I don't feel many would be convinced if it were announced he has decided to stay.

I think Bent will be our first choice striker, he has taken every one of his chances with aplomb in pre season. He's in form and at the start of the season form can count for alot. Bent is looking razor sharp and he's doing this when most players are just knocking the rust off there assorted talents. IMO Ramos would be a fool not to start with Bent against Boro.

A pacey striker?? Bent has pace does he not? and at times this pre-season he has shown that he has the hunger and desire that will make him first choice.
And on the height subject, i feel that we would be doing ourselves out of goals if we dont utilise the talents of players like Modric, Bentley, Bale, Hutton, they can all put good crosses into the box, with a short player like AA in there we would be missing out as any cross put into the mix would just come straight back out again!

It was rather abundatly clear at the Euro's and in the UEFA cup that AA is more of a CAM or deep lying striker than the kind of man you would want to spearhead an attack in the PL. If AA does join I'll expect to see him play out wide on the left with Bentley wide right. Not at the top as the lone striker.

I think the delay in Berba moving is that Levy has decided to give him the job of organising the squad numbers for the current season. As usual he is taking his merry time to do anything! I hear he moves so slow if he stops he starts rolling backwards.

I beg to differ. ÂŁ28 isn't near enough to pay for Rednose and Manures shennanigans. For complete respect, I would want Dan Levy to say min ÂŁ30 on principle. ÂŁ10m more than Carrick on paper sounds good, but with a fit and motivated Berba in our squad, that would have given us loads more options than just the running into channels that our line up looks to have.

ÂŁ30m+ minimum, and a little donation to our charity just for the complete piss take over the last year and a bit. If you look at it from another angle, with a largest amount of luck, and an all firing motivated Berba last season, we could have already made Champions League, and that extra ÂŁ50m. Ok, a little far-fetched, but we're arming our competition, in the same way that we helped the Pools chances by selling Keane to them. 8O

I didnt say we had to lump it in the mixer did I?
My whole argument about Bent was that he runs the channels and gets into the space behind the defence (using his pace and power). It just so happens that he can use his head (something Crouch can't do btw!)
My point is that I dont see us going through the season without sticking some crosses into the box given that we have so many players that can deliver fantactic crosses and long range passes.
You look at our midfield and where is the height coming from? Its not only useful at attacking set pieces but for defending them too.
Unless David Villa comes in for around the ÂŁ30m mark who else are we going to buy that could possibly cost that much money?? Its already become apparent that Levy will not pay anymore than ÂŁ17m for AA and he's not even a striker!
Besides how can you deny Bent his chance? The guy has stuck it out, been through the lean times and put up with everyone doubting him. He's kept his head down, trained hard and fully embraced Ramos' new style of play. I'm sure given the chance and the full support of the fans we will see Benty rip up the PL this year!

The season starts this weekend. There's no time for prancing around on the high horse of principal. We need a team in place that can gel before some of the tougher fixtures start heading our way at the end of the month. Sulkyberb no use to us if he's sulking. Look at his performance at WHL last sunday. We need to build upon the momentum of siging J2S, Modric, and Bentley. We need a blood thirsty striker and a DM/CM who isn't afraid to draw blood. And we need them now.

JD never did what Bent has done. Granted its only pre-season but the guy has been a one man goal scoring machine.

He's made us forget about Keane and even to an extent Berba. Defoe was never that good that we would be happy going into the season with him as the lone striker. Defoe was never one to take his chances, he always seemed to want to rocket the ball into the back of the net. You just have to see how many times in pre-season that Bent has slotted the ball past the keeper or between his legs to see that he has got supreme confidence and like i said, that kind of form in pre-season is lethal as the only thing he can do is get sharper as the real football kicks off. I'm confident that Bent with Gio in behind him will score plenty of goals this season.

Exactly what we need!

As for Berba. Yeah a motivated Berba is worth ÂŁ30 million but he is not motivated is he?

We need to get rid of him and Utd need him. The closer it gets to the end of the window the harder it will be to get a replacement in.

I reckon we will go for a cheap option until Jan or next summer. I just cannot see us signing a top striker in this window.

Yes, 'replacements' are not what Ramos is seeking, because he's building a much more fluid, mobile team that itself will replace the old, more rigid role-based system. I'm not saying their won't be roles at all - striker's role, for example. His will be to score. Nowt much else. Goalie to save, but also to conduct the chants and sing-songs.

To be fair, Berbatov is irreplaceable, such are his talents (when he cares to use them). No matter. The method is king, not the megalomaniacal hit-man.

My theory is... if he was any good then how come players like Jarosik have made it over to the premier league when he hasn't?

That aside, if he can replicate the performance he put in against the dutch at Euro 2008 then he could be a good signing. I hope we dont pay more than ÂŁ16m for him though, otherwise it could be a big risk.

Exactly!

Even if we aren't going to play a rigid 442 we still need another bent or no9 type player in the squad that can play alone up front or in a 2(like Berba can) to give him competition and cover for injuries and so if berba goes im sure we'll see us getting another player like that in, a pavlyuchenko type for example.

AA like keane would give us great options across the pitch and remember Keane was intended to be part of the revolution until he walked and so AA has to be seen as filling his place in the squad if he comes.

I get what your saying but dont you think that along with all the pundits and journalists that we may have been sucked in by all the hype that surrounded him?
Be fair the guy played well against a shit Rangers team in the UEFA cup final. Then he played well against a terrible Greece side and a second rate swedish team in the Euro's. The dutch side were of a better calibre but were always suspect when asked to defend. Once he came up against a team that was any good in Spain, Marcos Senna marked him out the game. I mean he didnt get a look in all game! This is also the same guy who did nothing against a really poor england side in the qualifiers too.

Trust me, if he signs I would love him to prove me wrong and become an absolute hero at White Hart Lane but as it stands I hope we do what Barca did and tell Zenit that its ÂŁ12m or nothing.

Spurs have been in for Arshavin for a long time. If he came to no one else's attention before the Euro's, he certainly came to ours. Harry highlighted this a long while back on the old blog. So long ago was it, in fact, that I was surprised when the prospect was mooted again. So surprised was I that I dismissed it as a realistic aspiration for Spurs, as the player had by then come to greater prominence and wider appreciation.

The fact that we seem to be so close to signing him is now only a cause of frustration for me, as I thought the opportunity had been missed the first time round.

I'm not saying we will be hoofing the ball up top but it would help in many situations if we had someone with Bents height up top. It would help if we did need to knock itlong, it would make the most of the crossing ability that players like Bentley and Bent have and his height also gives him more of a physical presence.

I know Youtube can make people look better than they are, but they have to be of a certain standard to find good highlights, that video had me shaking my head at some of the stuff he was pulling! Think Ginola mixed with Keane with the finishing Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

3 words: Horses for Courses
Straight out of the horses....er, General Ramos' mouth.

Big man - Little man every game? Thats a Pompey game now with our old cast offs. What our General will do is to employ the best team for each occasion under each condition.

Spain won the Euro's playing with the fluid dynamic midfield, with a little man up front. Against particular opposition, we may not need the extra height.

Similarly, whichever striker/ MF/ DF, superstar or otherwise that arrives, will compliment the rest of the squad, so that we have enough cover for each 'nominated role' out of the veritable cookbook or game plans that our General has in store. This will also feature at some stage, a chapter on when to use fresh ingredients - allowing them to add their youthful flavours to more mature subtleties.

As for you Highburyspur - you'll need better goggles. Stop borrowing Mr.Magoo's pint glass spectacles and wrap your corneas around these LINK =D Mmmmm Euro wags.....droool

Villa, not a chance, but we'll definitely get less expensive back up for bent.

Corluka has put in a transfer request according to the Mail. If true, I can't see how the club can refuse as they're the ones who tried to sell him in the first place.

'Word coming out of Manchester City is that the uncertainty over the club's future will still see Vedran Corluka eventually move to Spurs.

The facts that have come out over the last few days all point to the inevitable. The FA yesterday confirmed that they received all of the documents for Corluka’s transfer from Spurs, but not from City, whilst the player’s agent himself confirmed that having agreed personal terms and passed a medical, the defender had mentally committed to the move and was both surprised and disappointed when City pulled the plug.

Now, Mark Hughes may actually beat Corluka out of the exit door given his disgust at the way Corluka and teammate Stephen Ireland were touted to Spurs and Sunderland respectively behind his back.

The turmoil means only one thing. Corluka will join his good friend Luka Modric at the high flying London club, and will neither be the first or last of City’s stars to make such a move.'

Can't we get a good sperm sample from Greavsie, Glen and Dave MacKay and start breeding the next generation of stars in testubes and petri dishes....oh never mind...twas just an idle thought.

An update for you all.

First off, as reported by someone today, Ramos and Poyet were indeed in London attending the Respect event today with Ledley picking up the fair play award on behalf of the club.

The Man Utd hearing is tomorrow and both of them are expected to be attending that as well.

As I mentioned the other day, we believe Corluka is ours and have signed documents to prove it. The problem, City are disputing the authenticity of their signature and whether their signatory was authorised to sign for them. If (or when) it goes to court it would be very very likely that we'd win. I assume this is why Archibald is so confident about Corluka still joining, that he's been told the same thing.

Now for the big one. Arshavin was indeed our "mystery man" from earlier. He's been at the club today and was very impressed by what he saw.

I like vodka (but not as much as Ledley).

If Berbatov leaves, which is seeming likely, Who is Ramos going to get between now and the window closing? We need two strikers. We cant depend solely on Darren Bent, not even for one game. What if his preseason form eludes him, and come Saturday he's back to the useless lump that cant beat a man and cant shoot. What’s are options for a substitution then? Pekhart?

We all know there seems to be an anti spurs vendetta running throughout the press and many pundits on all the broadcasters.

It started with Andy Gray and his "modric is ordinary" quote and Lawro well, lawro just cant see past liverpool at the merment!

The facts are that all the press and pundits would like to see the top four keep battling it out every year and keep to the proforma. They do this so that essentially they cant be suprised or proved wrong (seeing as they always have a 1 in 4 chance of predicting where the title goes etc) This theory is perpetuated by the fact that pundits especially in sky all used to play for the big 4, Nicholas, Merson, Smith, Wilkins etc. Andy Gray and Matt Le Tissier just seem to hate spurs!

None of them will be or want to be bold enough to step out from under their stones and say that Spurs could challenge.

So this is our chance to show people like Andy Gray that Modric is most definitely not ordinary!!

This year will see the glory come back to the lane! COME ON YOU SPURS!!!

Am I the only one that detests the common use of the phrase 'the top four' to represent Manure, Chelscum, Ar5ena1, and the Bindippers?Quantum physics observes occurrences of 'Objective Actualisation', wherein the energy store created by a thought actualises into a realisation of the thought. In this case, the more we and others think of these 4 as the top four, the greater the likelihood it will be so.

Perhaps I've been reading too much 'The Secret', or daydream about celebrating winning the Premiership at WHL, but each new season is just that: a chance to start afresh - and with our squad building up the way it is, I would suggest that you all create a Vision Board with what you want spurs to achieve.

On my vision board at the moment:
1. A picture of Berba being swapped for ÂŁ30m and then sitting on in the stands at Old trafford not playing
2. Pictures of the FA cup, UEFA cup, Premier League trophy, Carling Cup all with the Spurs ribbons tied to them
3. A lottery ticket with winning numbers for a mega jackpot rollover

Alright, I'll be happy with just Arshavin and Corluka and a 3rd place finish in the league.

I'm gobsmacked. This is all from the same parent company that produces the Mail, The London Evening Standard and the Metro. It's not worth buying the Standard anymore, the Metro always prints again and for free in the mornings.

I was shocked to see that too! it seems like mr griffiths of the metro is a Spurs fan riding on the crest of a pre-season wave!! Just like the rest of us are. I dont care though, its quite refreshing to see a journo come out and write a piece like that.

OH..... On my vision board >> David Villa in a Spurs shirt, Arshavin in a spurs shirt (holding a ÂŁ15m price tag), Corluka playing next woody and the squad parading all 4 trophies & of course we will be defending the Fair Play cup this season too!!

Jamie. Fair Play cup? I'd rather we took turns to get a few yellows and give a few some helpings of studs and elbows. Main recipient would have to be our neighbours down the road, plus a few for Manure etc.

Something a little like this? LINK I know its a different game, but swap chiefs for Spurs, add another dimension to our silky skills, and assume its us playing a tactical away game.

I was being sarcastic. I couldnt give a toss about us winning the fair play cup!!

Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to see Tom Huddlestone become a destroyer, a monolithic presence in the CDM position, dishing out crunching tackles on a player like Fabregas, before picking the loose ball and pinging one of those delightful long range passes to Bentys feet. I hope Ramos can really give Big Tom a defined role for this season and start to help him settle into a position. I believe in 3-4 years time Tom & Modric can be the metronome in midfield that we have been crying out for

FYI its the word a day scheme! lol

pick a word and then try and use it as often as possible throughout the day, IN THE RIGHT CONTEXT OF COURSE!!

You cant just say "i had a monolithic sandwich at lunchtime" Well you could but you'd sound like a dick.

Hudd is about as mobile as a monolith.

He doesnt have to be majorly mobile to become a great player. Granted it helps but if he learns to do his role he will grow into it. Makelele wasn't the kind of player that buzzed all over the pitch, he was in the right place at the right time and thats all that mattered.

I believe with the right training Hudd can become a great CDM and in the process save us a fortune.

Is a metronome like a midget who rides the underground all day?

Midfield Enforcers are not born, they are guilded from years of being smashed in the middle of the park, frustrated at a lack of recognition and perplexed at a lack of goalscoring opportunities. This is why the truly great DM's don't blossom until they are 27+, it takes a while to build up all that anger and bitterness. Then again, Ramos has taken away Tommy's Ketchup, so maybe he can start smashing people up on Saturday.

I just read Lawro's appraisal of Tottenham and the rest of league. What a scousy twat. keane and berba's will leave a gaping hole. No mention of Bent. Twat.

We all know there seems to be an anti spurs vendetta running throughout the press and many pundits on all the broadcasters.

It started with Andy Gray and his "modric is ordinary" quote and Lawro well, lawro just cant see past liverpool at the merment!

The facts are that...

Sorry Jamie, but this is nonsense. Sure, a lot them still harbour preferences for their old clubs, but they're not out to get Tottenham per se. I always think Merse is actually quite fair - if he manages the rare feat of stringing a coherent sentence together. Le Tissier, in fact, is a life-long Spurs fan. As for Smith and Wilkins, I'm surprised you can stay awake during their adenoidal, fence-sitting droning.
Gray I don't like - but he has to spend 30-odd weekends a year sharing a small space with that hirsute, naff-suited tosser Richard "Dick" Keays. Natural justice, I say.

To what extent must Tommy used ketchup for it to affect his fitness so badly???

I just have visions of Big Tom putting bucketloads of ketchup on his salad, on his cereal, even in his nutritious baby food drinks Ramos made them drink! He must have kept Heinz in business!

You have to admit its rather tedious listening to people like Smith, Gray, and the old arsenal connection professing how amazing Arsenal are?

Even we beat them 5-1 last year, Ian Darke and Alan Smith were convinced that Arsenal would make a comeback at 4-1 down! I mean thats just delusional to the point of fantasy.

Calf

Thank you for changing the last three letters of that body part.

I had to; it was well over 5ft wide (at the narrowest point).
